Extraction of the higher-twist parton distribution $e(x)$ from CLAS data

We present the first point-by-point extraction of a twist-3 PDF. The scalar PDF, e(x), is accessed through the analysis of the data for the sin φR-moment of the beam-spin asymmetry for dihadron production in semi-inclusive DIS off proton target at CLAS and CLAS12. The dihadron formalism allows for use of collinear framework, hence calling for a minimal set of approximations and hypotheses. The extracted PDF e(x) carries insights into the physics of the largely-unexplored quark-gluon correlations, and its first Mellin moment is related to the marginally known scalar charge of the nucleon. We show that the proton flavor combination of the scalar PDF is nonzero at more than 74% probability.

Seniority Structure in Neutron-Rich Nucleus 128 Ag : Evidence for Robustness of 𝑁 = 82 Shell Closure in Silver Isotopes

The spectroscopic studies of very neutron-rich nucleus 128 Ag have been performed for the first time at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN. A new seniority isomer with a half-life of 1.60(7) μs has been identified and is proposed to have a spin-parity of 16 - with a maximally aligned configuration comprising three proton holes in the g 9/2 orbital and one neutron hole in the h 11/2 orbital. The new level structure in 128 Ag is quite well described by shell model calculations without invoking excitations across the Z = 50 and N = 82 shell gaps, and presents a good case of seniority scheme in odd-odd nuclei in the south vicinity of the double-magic nucleus 132 Sn. With a classification of various components of the proton-neutron interaction, the inversion of lowest-lying 9 - and 10 - states between 128 Ag and its neighboring isotone 130 In is found to be dynamically ascribed to the seniority-nonconserving proton-neutron interaction components. The structure above 10 - up to the 16 - isomer in 128 Ag shows remarkable similarities to seniority structures in the semimagic nuclei 128 Pd and 130 Cd. These spectroscopic features in 128 Ag indicate that the N = 82 shell closure is still robust in silver isotopes.

Kinematic Dependence of the Dilution Factor in the SpinQuest Experiment E1039 at Fermilab

Thirty years after the "Spin Crisis" began, there is still uncertainty surrounding the spin structure of the nucleon. SpinQuest Experiment E1039 at FermiLab will attempt to probe the internal transverse dynamics of the nucleon via Drell-Yan scattering of a 120 GeV proton beam from a polarized proton target to determine if the orbital angular momentum of the sea-quarks contributes to the overall spin of the nucleon. In order to understand a leading contribution to the overall systematic uncertainty in this experiment, a study was performed to calculate and evaluate the uncertainty in the dilution factor of the experimental target. This thesis catalogs that effort, highlights where it overlaps with other sources of systematic error, and suggests future work aimed at reducing the overall systematic error of the experiment.

Beam Spin Asymmetry Measurements of Deeply Virtual $π$ 0 Production with CLAS12

The new experimental measurements of beam spin asymmetry were performed for the deeply virtual exclusive $π$ 0 production in a wide kinematic region with the photon virtualities $Q$ 2 up to 8 GeV 2 and the Bjorken scaling variable $x$ $B$ in the valence regime. The data were collected by the CE BAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS12) at Jefferson Lab with longitudinally polarized 10.6 GeV electrons scattered on an unpolarized liquid-hydrogen target. Sizable asymmetry values indicate a substantial contribution from transverse virtual photon amplitudes to the polarized structure functions. The interpretation of these measurements in terms of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) demonstrates their sensitivity to the chiral-odd GPD $\overline{E}$ $T$ , which contains information on quark transverse spin densities in unpolarized and polarized nucleons and provides access to the proton’s transverse anomalous magnetic moment. Additionally, the data were compared to a theoretical model based on a Regge formalism that was extended to the high photon virtualities.

Future Studies of Dihadron Production in SIDIS

Spin asymmetry and cross section measurements in semi-inclusive hadroproduction grant access to a variety of parton distribution and fragmentation functions. Such measurements of dihadron production additionally constrain Dihadron Fragmentation Functions (DiFFs), and the extra degree of freedom from the second hadron facilitates access to some of the parton distribution functions. At CLAS kinematics, subleading-twist parton distributions are accessible in dihadron beam-spin and target-spin asymmetries, and a comparison of semi-inclusive scattering off a proton and a deuteron probes their flavor dependence. The future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) with a transversely polarized proton will access several transverse-momentum dependent distributions such as Sivers and transversity. On the fragmentation side, numerous DiFFs are accessible, and their partial wave expansion probes correlations between the angular momentum of the fragmenting parton with that of the observed dihadron. Furthermore, different hadron channels probe flavor dependence in fragmentation. Together with CLAS, the EIC as well as CLAS with the proposed 22 GeV accelerator upgrade will cover a broad range of $Q^2$ and $x$, allowing for the study of evolution effects of all of these functions. This presentation will summarize the possibilities of these measurements at CLAS and at future experimental facilities.

Entanglement entropy production in deep inelastic scattering

Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) samples a part of the wave function of a hadron in the vicinity of the light cone. Lipatov constructed a spin chain which describes the amplitude of DIS in leading logarithmic approximation. Kharzeev and Levin proposed the entanglement entropy as an observable in DIS [Phys. Rev. D 95, 114008 (2017)], and suggested a relation between the entanglement entropy and parton distributions. Here we represent the DIS process as a local quench in Lipatov’s spin chain and study the time evolution of the produced entanglement entropy. We show that the resulting entanglement entropy depends on time logarithmically, $\mathcal{S}(t) = 1/3 ln(t/τ)$ with $τ = 1/m for 1/m ≤ t ≤ (mx)^{–1}$, where m is the proton mass and $\textit{x}$ is the Bjorken $\textit{x}$. The central charge c of Lipatov’s spin chain is determined here to be $\textit{c}$ = 1; using the proposed relation between the entanglement entropy and parton distributions, this corresponds to the gluon structure function growing at small $\textit{x}$ as $xG(x) ~ 1/x^{1/3}$.

Determination of the spin and parity of all-charm tetraquarks

The traditional quark model accounts for the existence of baryons, such as protons and neutrons, which consist of three quarks, as well as mesons, composed of a quark–antiquark pair. Only recently has substantial evidence started to accumulate for exotic states composed of four or five quarks and antiquarks. The exact nature of their internal structure remains uncertain. Here we report the first measurement of quantum numbers of the recently discovered family of three all-charm tetraquarks, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider from 2016 to 2018 . The angular analysis techniques developed for the discovery and characterization of the Higgs boson have been applied to the new exotic states. Here we show that the quantum numbers for parity P and charge conjugation C symmetries are found to be +1. The spin J of these exotic states is determined to be consistent with 2ħ, while 0ħ and 1ħ are excluded at 95% and 99% confidence levels, respectively. The J PC = 2 ++ assignment implies particular configurations of constituent spins and orbital angular momenta, which constrain the possible internal structure of these tetraquarks.

First Determination of the Spin-Parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + , 0 Baryons

The Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) ( → D + ( 0 ) Λ ) π − decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 , recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined to be 3 / 2 + with a significance of more than 6.5 σ ( 3.5 σ ) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) π − transitions are measured to be − 0.92 ± 0.10 ± 0.05 ( − 0.92 ± 0.16 ± 0.22 ), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results support the hypothesis that the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons correspond to the first D -wave λ -mode excitation of the Ξ c flavor triplet. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Influence of Polar Mutations on the Electronic and Structural Properties of Q A –· in Bacterial Reaction Centers

Reaction centers from Rb. sphaeroides with residue M265 mutated from isoleucine to threonine, serine, and asparagine (M265IT, M265IS, and M265IN, respectively) in the Q A –· state are studied by high-resolution ESEEM and ENDOR spectroscopies to investigate the structural characteristics of these mutants influencing the redox properties of the Q A site. All three mutants decrease the redox midpoint potential (E m ) of Q A by ~0.1 V, yet the mechanism for this drop in E m is unclear. In this work, we examine (i) the hydrogen bonding interactions between Q A –· and residues histidine M219 and alanine M260, (ii) the electron spin density distribution of the semiquinone, and (iii) the orientations of the ubiquinone methoxy substituents. 13 C measurements show no significant contribution of methoxy dihedral angles to the observed decrease in E m for the Q A mutants. Instead, 14 N three-pulse ESEEM data suggest electrostatic or hydrogen bond formation between the mutated M265 side chain and His-M219 N δ may be involved in the observed lowering of the Q A midpoint potential. For mutant M265IN, analysis of the proton hyperfine couplings reveals a weakened hydrogen bond network, resulting in an altered Q A –· spin density distribution. Here, the magnetic resonance study presented here is therefore most consistent with an electrostatic or structural perturbation of the His-M219 N δ hydrogen bond in these mutants as a mechanism for the ~0.1 V decrease in Q A E m .

Cellulose crystallinity index (CrI) of switchgrass measured by solid-state NMR

Here we present a curated dataset of switchgrass cellulose crystallinity index (CrI) measured using solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Seventy-two topline switchgrass lines grown in greenhouse were collected and ground to -20/+80 mesh. The switchgrass was then Soxhlet-extracted with toluene/ethanol for 24 h to remove extractives. The extractives-free switchgrass was holopulped by using peracetic acid at 5 g loading per g biomass and the solution consistency was adjusted to 5% with DI water. Holopulping was conducted at room temperature for 24 h with stirring. The obtained holocellulose was washed excessively with DI water and air-dried at room temperature for 24 h. The dried holocellulose was treated with hydrochloric acid (2.5 M) for 2 h to remove hemicellulose. The isolated cellulose was collected by filtration, rinsed with DI water, and used to analyze cellulose crystallinity by solid-state NMR. The NMR samples were prepared by packing the moisturized cellulose into 4-mm cylindrical Zirconia MAS rotors. Cross polarization/magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) NMR analysis of cellulose was carried out on a Bruker Avance III 400-MHz spectrometer operating at 100.59 MHz for 13C in a Bruker double-resonance MAS probe head at spinning speeds of 8 kHz. The CP/MAS experiments utilized a 5 ms (90°) proton pulse, 1.5 ms contact pulse, 4 s recycle delay and 4000 scans. The cellulose crystallinity index was determined from the areas of the cellulose crystalline C4 signal (δ 86-92 ppm) over the entire C4 regions (δ 79-92 ppm) in the NMR spectra.

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetries of inclusive jet and dijet production at STAR

The STAR experiment probes the gluon helicity distribution \Delta g(x, Q^2) Δ g ( x , Q 2 ) using collisions of longitudinally polarized protons at \sqrt{s} = 200 s = 200 ~GeV and \sqrt{s} = 510 s = 510 ~GeV. \Delta g(x, Q^2) Δ g ( x , Q 2 ) can be accessed through the double-spin asymmetries A_{LL} A L L in gluon-dominated hard scattering processes via inclusive jet and dijet production. This proceedings report on recent measurements of A_{LL} A L L for inclusive jets and dijets in the mid-pseudorapidity ( |\eta| < 1 | η | < 1 ) and dijets in the intermediate pseudrapidity ( -0.8 < \eta < 1.8 − 0.8 < η < 1.8 ) regions. These measurements provide sensitivity to \Delta g(x, Q^2) Δ g ( x , Q 2 ) for gluon momentum fractions x x from \simeq 0.5 ≃ 0.5 down to \simeq 0.004 ≃ 0.004 . The results are in good agreement with previous STAR measurements and recent theoretical evaluations of prior world data.

Semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target. II. Deuteron and spectator nucleon tagging

We develop the theoretical framework for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target and apply it to scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging. In Part I (previous article), we present the general form of the semi-inclusive cross section and polarization observables for the spin-1 target. In Part II (this article), we consider deep-inelastic scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging as a special case of target fragmentation. Methods of light-front quantization are employed to separate nuclear and hadronic structure in the high-energy process and achieve a composite description. The light-front wave function of the polarized deuteron is obtained from a rotationally covariant three-dimensional wave function in the center-of-mass frame of the proton-neutron system. The tagged structure functions are computed in the impulse approximation. The momentum and spin distribution of the active nucleon are controlled by the deuteron polarization and the detected spectator momentum (𝐷/𝑆 wave ratio). The cross section and spin asymmetries are evaluated for general deuteron polarization (vector and tensor, longitudinal and transverse) as functions of the spectator momentum. Tensor-polarized spin asymmetries of order unity are achieved for spectator momenta of approximately 300 MeV, which select configurations with a large 𝐷 wave. Sum rules for the tagged spin structure functions are derived. The results can be used for simulations of spectator tagging in future polarized fixed-target experiments (Jefferson Lab) or at the Electron-Ion Collider.

First measurement of prompt and non-prompt D* + vector meson spin alignment in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This letter reports the first measurement of spin alignment, with respect to the helicity axis, for D* + vector mesons and their charge conjugates from charm-quark hadronisation (prompt) and from beauty meson decays (non-prompt) in hadron collisions. The measurements were performed at midrapidity (|y| < 0.8) as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) in proton–proton (pp) collisions collected by ALICE at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The diagonal spin density matrix element $ρ$00 of D* + mesons was measured from the angular distribution of the D* + → D 0 (→ K - π + )π + decay products, in the D* + rest frame, with respect to the D* + momentum direction in the pp centre of mass frame. The $ρ$00 value for prompt D* + mesons is consistent with 1/3, which implies no spin alignment. However, for non prompt D* + mesons an evidence of $ρ$00 larger than 1/3 is found. The measured value of the spin density element is $ρ$00 = 0.455±0.022(stat.)±0.035(syst.) in the 5 < p T < 20 GeV/c interval, which is consistent with a Pythia 8 Monte Carlo simulation coupled with the EvtGen package, which implements the helicity conservation in the decay of D* + meson from beauty mesons. In non-central heavy-ion collisions, the spin of the D* + mesons may be globally aligned with the direction of the initial angular momentum and magnetic field. Based on the results for pp collisions reported in this letter it is shown that alignment of non-prompt D* + mesons due to the helicity conservation coupled to the collective anisotropic expansion may mimic the signal of global spin alignment in heavy-ion collisions.

First study of polarized proton-proton scattering with small-𝑥 helicity evolution

We perform a phenomenological study of helicity-dependent parton distribution functions (PDFs) using small-𝑥 helicity evolution equations, incorporating for the first time single-inclusive jet production data in polarized proton-proton (𝑝⁢𝑝) scattering at parton momentum fractions 𝑥 <0.1. We also simultaneously include double-longitudinal spin asymmetries in inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering probing 𝑥 <0.1. Employing the polarized small-𝑥 pure-glue calculation of 𝑝⁢𝑝 → 𝑔⁡𝑋 for the jet production cross section, we modify the large-𝑁 𝑐 &𝑁 𝑓 KPS-CTT evolution equations by setting 𝑁 𝑓 = 0 to replicate the large-𝑁𝑐 (pure-glue) limit, while retaining external quark flavors for the spinor field operators. We find that the 𝑝⁢𝑝 data have a considerable impact on the helicity PDFs at small 𝑥, reducing their uncertainties and leading to a total quark and gluon helicity in the proton for 𝑥 < 0.1 of −0.04 ±0.23. Combining our analysis with a recent JAM helicity PDF analysis of the world polarized data, which includes 𝑥 > 0.1, we find a total quark and gluon helicity contribution for 𝑥 >10 −7 of between 0.02 and 0.51.

Exploration of Defect Dynamics and Color Center Qubit Synthesis with Pulsed Ion Beams

Short-pulse ion beams have been developed in recent years and now enable applications in materials science. A tunable flux of selected ions delivered in pulses of a few nanoseconds can affect the balance of defect formation and dynamic annealing in materials. We report results from color center formation in silicon with pulses of 900 keV protons. G-centers in silicon are near-infrared photon emitters with emerging applications as single-photon sources and for spin-photon qubit integration. G-centers consist of a pair of substitutional carbon atoms and one silicon interstitial atom and are often formed by carbon ion implantation and thermal annealing. Here, we report on G-center formation with proton pulses in silicon samples that already contained carbon, without carbon ion implantation or thermal annealing. The number of G-centers formed per proton increased when we increased the pulse intensity from 6.9 × 10 9 to 7.9 × 10 10 protons/cm 2 /pulse, demonstrating a flux effect on G-center formation efficiency. We observe a G-center ensemble linewidth of 0.1 nm (full width half maximum), narrower than previously reported. Pulsed ion beams can extend the parameter range available for fundamental studies of radiation-induced defects and the formation of color centers for spin-photon qubit applications.

Measurement of spin-density matrix elements in 𝜙⁡(1020) → 𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$⁢𝐾$^{0}_{𝐿}$ photoproduction with a linearly polarized photon beam at 𝐸 𝛾 = 8.2–8.8 GeV

We measure the spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) for the photoproduction of 𝜙⁡(1020) off of the proton in its decay to 𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$⁢𝐾$^{0}_{𝐿}$, using 105 pb −1 of data collected with a linearly polarized photon beam using the GlueX experiment. The SDMEs are measured in nine bins of the squared four-momentum transfer 𝑡 in the range −𝑡=0.15−1.0 GeV 2 , providing the first measurement of their 𝑡 dependence for photon beam energies of 𝐸 𝛾 = 8.2−8.8 GeV. We confirm the dominance of Pomeron exchange in this region and put constraints on the contribution of other Regge exchanges. We also find that helicity amplitudes where the helicity of the photon and 𝜙⁡(1020) differ by two units are negligible.
