Publication of LLNL Genomics Data to ESGF: a Technical Report for DREAM Project

We present the process used to set up several example genomic data sets within an ESGF framework. The process begins with designing a project, staging the data, and handling the necessary configuration. We describe the publication process used to ingest the datasets, in essence, all required metadata. Finally, we describe the data web service that we introduce in the DREAM project which makes these datasets available for download or exploration.

Enabling 10mol/kg Swing Capacity via Heat Integrated Sub-ambient Pressure Swing Adsorption

This project focused on the development of a post-combustion CO 2 capture technology for coal-fired power stations. The core concept of the technology was the combination of an adsorption-based separation with combustion flue gas cooling, compression followed by heat and power recovery. The key features of the adsorption unit (which captures and purifies the CO 2 ) are the use of high flow fiber-based adsorption systems that incorporate materials that manage the significant amounts of heat released during the adsorption separation. The adsorbent material utilized was a hybrid organic-inorganic material (a metal-organic framework) that had the proper combination of separation selectivity and CO 2 capture capacity. In this case, record-setting, process-relevant CO 2 capture capacities (approximately 8-10 mol of CO 2 per kg of adsorbent “swing capacities”) were observed in experimental measurements of the adsorptive separation. The experimental work was accompanied by detailed multi-level simulation works, which investigated the molecular mechanism for the high CO 2 capture efficiencies, the heat and mass transport dynamics within the separation system, and the process-level integration of the various systems associated with the technology. Overall, the analysis conducted in this work indicates that this technology can potentially reach CO 2 capture costs as low as 40-50 dollars/tonne with capital costs of 250M-400M dollars for the 550 MW e basecase established by the National Energy Technology Laboratory.

Long Range Community Planning Process for Fusion Sciences and Plasma Physics (Final Technical Report)

This grant facilitated the APS-DPP Community Planning Process (DPP-CPP) which was a strategic planning process with the goals of identifying scientific and technological opportunities in the fields of Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Science, and making consensus recommendations for a strategy to address these opportunities to the DOE Office of Fusion Energy Science Advisory Committee (FESAC). The DPP-CPP was initiated by the APS-DPP executive committee in order to help FESAC fulfill a charge from DOE to develop a strategic plan for the DOE Office of Fusion Energy Science (FES). In this charge, the DOE Deputy Director for Science, Dr. Stephen Binkley, requests “that the Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (FESAC) undertake a new long-range strategic planning activity for the Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) program. The strategic planning activity - to encompass the entire FES research portfolio (namely, burning plasma science and discovery plasma science) - should identify and prioritize the research required to advance both the scientific foundation needed to develop a fusion energy source, as well as the broader FES mission to steward plasma science.” The process as set out in the proposal (and below) was successful in meeting all of its stated goals culminating in the final report to the FESAC subcommittee given the charge.

The Modeled Performance of the ORNL Matched Filter Detector for Seismic Signatures of Multi-Axle Tractor Trailers

The MINOS program seeks methods to passively monitor the transfer of special materials, which are reproducible and quantitatively defensible. To date, we have demonstrated that short-period seismometers deployed near vehicle tracks can detect and monitor signatures of multi-axle tractor trailers impacting small road obstacles as means to detect and identify some transfer activities. In this report, we model the seismic velocity signal output from a tractor-trailer impacting a small obstacle (a template waveform) to parameterize a matched filter that identifies signals with similar shapes buried in noise, and that indicate repeating events (target waveforms). We then use this model to perform thousands of synthetic experiments, in which we apply our detector to identify noisy waveforms output from a similarly modeled vehicle data set; we process all data in the same manner as we process real data collected from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seismic network. Our experiments, while limited, reveal that the matched filter shows a high discrimination capability, and at very low SNR values (at visibility thresholds). This means that template waveforms can match target waveforms that are sourced by models that share the same vehicle speed (target vehicles), and have a low probability of mis-identification. In particular, a matched filter designed to detect a five-axle tractor-trailer will reliably identify that target vehicle down to an SNR of 11.25 dB, and within ±0.1 km/hr, while successfully screening target vehicles with three axles.

Direct Observation of Photoexcited Charge Carrier Dynamics and Electrostatic Fields at Photocatalytic Semiconductor/liquid Interfaces

Photoelectrochemical conversion of solar energy to fuels at semiconductor-liquid interfaces involves a complex set of processes, which include band bending, built-in electric fields, surface recombination of photoexcited carriers, and ultimately charge transfer to the ions in solution, in which the electrostatic fields within the depletion region of the semiconductor plays an important role. There are loss mechanisms associated with each of these key components in the overall photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency. Direct probe of these elementary processes is key to the rational improvement of photoeletrochemical cells and electrodes. In this collaborative project, Tianquan Lian at Emory University, Steve Cronin at University of Southern California and their students and postdoctoral fellows carried out a series of studies that are aimed at direct observation of photoexcited charge carrier dynamics at photocatalytic semiconductor/liquid interfaces. The collaborative work led to the development of transient reflectance spectroscopy as a tool for in situ probing of carrier dynamics in planar photoelectrode/electrode interface; and the demonstration that this tool can be used to study oxide protected GaP to identify key efficiency limiting factors in these photoelectrodes. This work has led to the development a tool for in situ probing of carrier dynamics in planar photoelectrodes, which will facilitate the mechanistic study of photoelectrochemical cells. This work informs the development of better photoelectrode materials for solar water splitting and CO 2 reduction. This work has contributed to the training of three PhD students in the area of photoelectrochemistry, ultrafast spectroscopy and solar energy conversion

Seascape Interface Control Document

This all-inclusive document describes the components, installation, and usage of the Seascape system. Additionally, this manual outlines the step-by-step processes for setting up your own local instance of Seascape, incorporating new datasets and algorithms into Seascape, and how to use the system itself. A brief overview of Seascape is provided in Section 1.2. System components and the various roles of the intended users of the system are described in Section 1.3. Next, steps on how each role uses Seascape are explained in Section 2.1. Finally, the steps to incorporate data into Seascape-DB and an algorithm into Seascape-VV are outlined in Sections 2.2 and 2.3, respectively. Steps to set up an instance of Seascape can be found in Appendix A.1. Finally, Seascape usage can be found in Section 2.1. The appendix includes code examples, frequently asked questions, terminology, and a list of acronyms.

Microstructure Alignment Effects from Engineered Cooling during Additive Manufacturing of Alnico Magnets from Prealloyed Powder

Alnico is a rare-earth free; permanent magnet (PM) which maintains its saturation magnetization while at temperatures up to 550°C but lacks the coercivity and energy product needed for a wide range of demanding applications. With an optimal set of processing and manufacturing techniques, Alnico could replace Dy-free Nd-Fe-B magnets in certain applications if the microstructure is textured in a $\langle$001$\rangle$ direction. Additive manufacturing (AM) of near-net-shape magnets may provide such texture. To investigate the possibility, directed-energy deposition (DED) in conjunction with an actively cooled substrate was used to build samples with a compositionally modified, gas-atomized, Alnico 8 alloy. The resulting samples were solutionized and quenched, followed by magnetic annealing and a heat treatment. Magnetic properties and microstructures are compared to previous work.

Design of Novel Hot Gas Path Component for Gas Turbine Engines Enabled by Materials and Additive Manufacturing Process Development

This report covers the activities associated with the development and evaluation of two high-γ’ superalloys that were designed by external partners on this project, namely Carpenter Technologies Corporation and the University of California-Santa Barbra. One alloy was GammaPrint-700, a cobalt-base superalloy, and the other a nickel-base (Ni-base) superalloy GammaPrint-1100. Both were found to be printable through laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing, with optimal process parameter sets being identified for each alloy. Further, high temperature mechanical testing was conducted on each alloy that showed both materials performed better than the comparative baseline (LPBF Hastelloy X), with the Ni-base superalloy being down-selected for scaling and printing of the tip shoe components.

Analyses of requirements for computer control and data processing experiment subsystems. Volume 2: ATM experiment S-056 image data processing system software development

The IDAPS (Image Data Processing System) is a user-oriented, computer-based, language and control system, which provides a framework or standard for implementing image data processing applications, simplifies set-up of image processing runs so that the system may be used without a working knowledge of computer programming or operation, streamlines operation of the image processing facility, and allows multiple applications to be run in sequence without operator interaction. The control system loads the operators, interprets the input, constructs the necessary parameters for each application, and cells the application. The overlay feature of the IBSYS loader (IBLDR) provides the means of running multiple operators which would otherwise overflow core storage.

A workload model and measures for computer performance evaluation

A generalized workload definition is presented which constructs measurable workloads of unit size from workload elements, called elementary processes. An elementary process makes almost exclusive use of one of the processors, CPU, I/O processor, etc., and is measured by the cost of its execution. Various kinds of user programs can be simulated by quantitative composition of elementary processes into a type. The character of the type is defined by the weights of its elementary processes and its structure by the amount and sequence of transitions between its elementary processes. A set of types is batched to a mix. Mixes of identical cost are considered as equivalent amounts of workload. These formalized descriptions of workloads allow investigators to compare the results of different studies quantitatively. Since workloads of different composition are assigned a unit of cost, these descriptions enable determination of cost effectiveness of different workloads on a machine. Subsequently performance parameters such as throughput rate, gain factor, internal and external delay factors are defined and used to demonstrate the effects of various workload attributes on the performance of a selected large scale computer system.

Analytical treatment of gas flows through multilayer insulation, project 1

A theoretical investigation of gas flow inside a multilayer insulation system was made for the case of the broadside pumping process. A set of simultaneous first-order differential equations for the temperature and pressure of the gas molecules through the perforations on the insulation layers. A modified Runge-Kutta method was used for numerical experiment. The numerical stability problem was also investigated. It was shown that when the relaxation time is less than the time period over which the gas properties change appreciably, the set of differential equations can be replaced by a set of algebraic equations for solution. Numerical examples were given and comparisons with experimental data were made.

Resistive diffusion of force-free magnetic fields in a passive medium.

We consider the resistive diffusion of a force-free magnetic field in a tenuous compressible medium, which is free to move to accommodate the changing magnetic-field configuration. This process is nonlinear, contrary to the usual magnetic field diffusion in a fixed medium. We show that the force-free magnetic field may evolve slowly for an extended period of time, whereupon it abruptly develops steep gradients and passes into an explosive phase. We suggest that it is this process that sets the stage for the onset of solar flares.

Synthetic aperture radar system design for random field classification

An optimum design study is carried out for synthetic aperture radar systems intended for classifying randomly reflecting areas (such as agricultural fields) characterized by a reflectivity density spectral density. The problem solution is obtained, neglecting interfield interference and assuming areas of known configuration and location, as well as a certain Gaussian signal field property. The optimum processor is nonlinear, but includes conventional matched filter processing. A set of summary design curves is plotted, and is applied to the design of a satellite synthetic aperture radar system.

Apollo-11 lunar sample information catalogue

The Apollo 11 mission is reviewed with emphasis on the collection of lunar samples, their geologic setting, early processing, and preliminary examination. The experience gained during five subsequent missions was applied to obtain physical-chemical data for each sample using photographic and binocular microscope techniques. Topics discussed include: binocular examination procedure; breccia clast dexrriptuons, thin section examinations procedure typical breccia in thin section, typical basalt in thin section, sample histories, and chemical and age data. An index to photographs is included.

Lunar seismic data analysis

The scientific data transmitted continuously from all ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package) stations on the Moon and recorded on instrumentation tapes at receiving stations distributed around the Earth were processed. The processing produced sets of computer-compatible digital tapes, from which various other data sets convenient for analysis were generated. The seismograms were read, various types of seismic events were classified; the detected events were cataloged.
