Preservation of flavor in freeze dried green beans

Before freeze drying, green beans are heated to point at which their cell structure is altered. Beans freeze dried with altered cell structure have improved rehydration properties and retain color, flavor, and texture.

Functional preservation of vascular smooth muscle tissue

The ionic and cellular feedback relationships operating to effect the vascular decompensatory modifications were examined to reveal procedures for implementing protective measures guarding against vascular collapse when returning from a weightless environment to that of the earth's gravity. The surgical procedures for preparing the rat cremaster, and the fixation methods are described. Abstracts of publications resulting from this research are included.

Information preserving coding for multispectral data

A general formulation of the data compression system is presented. A method of instantaneous expansion of quantization levels by reserving two codewords in the codebook to perform a folding over in quantization is implemented for error free coding of data with incomplete knowledge of the probability density function. Results for simple DPCM with folding and an adaptive transform coding technique followed by a DPCM technique are compared using ERTS-1 data.

Preservation of wing leading edge suction at the plane of symmetry as a factor in wing-fuselage design

Most fuselage geometries cover a portion of the wing leading edge near the plane of symmetry, and it seems reasonable to expect that a large fraction of the leading edge suction which would be developed by the covered wing at high angles of attack is not developed on the fuselage. This is one of the reasons that the Oswald span efficiency factor for the wing body combination fails to approach the value predicted by lifting line theory for the isolated wing. Some traditional and recent literature on wing-body interference is discussed and high Reynolds number data on wing-body-nacelle drag are reviewed. An exposed central leading edge geometry has been developed for a sailplane configuration. Low Reynolds number tests have not validated the design concept.

Destruction of the recreational, asthetic, agricultural, wildlife conservation and preservation, and residential uses of the land as a result of the abuses of the manufacturing, commercial, extractive, construction, and transportation industries

Explicit concern over land use and abuse stems from the recognition of the negative impacts of unrestrained and unregulated economic, industrial, and population growth upon finite land resources. Only one quarter of the total surface area of the earth is land, and of that a large portion is uninhabitable. The present stresses upon the land include urbanization, urban sprawl and urban congestion; electrical, nuclear industrial park siting requirements; land degradation through stripping surface minerals; land degradation through disposal of radioactive wastes, sewage sludge, solid waste and other industrial wastes; rising demand for agricultural land; and the erosion and destruction of land through elimination of protective coverings such as forests, grasslands, and wetlands.

Preserving sparseness in multivariate polynominal factorization

Attempts were made to factor these ten polynomials on MACSYMA. However it did not get very far with any of the larger polynomials. At that time, MACSYMA used an algorithm created by Wang and Rothschild. This factoring algorithm was also implemented for the symbolic manipulation system, SCRATCHPAD of IBM. A closer look at this old factoring algorithm revealed three problem areas, each of which contribute to losing sparseness and intermediate expression growth. This study led to effective ways of avoiding these problems and actually to a new factoring algorithm. The three problems are known as the extraneous factor problem, the leading coefficient problem, and the bad zero problem. These problems are examined separately. Their causes and effects are set forth in detail; the ways to avoid or lessen these problems are described.

Troctolite 76535 - A study in the preservation of early isotopic records

The lunar rock considered in the present investigation is a coarse-grained troctolite granulite containing about 58(vol)% plagioclase, 37% olivine, 4% pyroxene, and less than 1% accessory phases with a texture which indicates formation as a cumulate at depths between 10 and 30 km followed by an extended period of slow cooling. A description is presented of noble gas studies of separated minerals from 76535. The quantity of fission xenon from the in situ decay of Pu-244 provides further evidence for different, mineral-specific, isotopic closure times. The presented data shows that 76535 loses its surface-correlated xenon component upon disaggregation. No other xenon component is lost. The presence of solar gases in 76535 would seem to argue in favor of the external acquisition of the parentless extinct isotope effects and consequently favor 'thermal diffusion' and 'adsorption' over local redistribution models.

Preserving Color in Developed Photographic Film

Controlled-atmosphere vault retards fading and deterioration of developed high speed film. Vault with externally controlled valve regulates flow of nitrogen gas from internally mounted tank. Gas purges ambient air from vault through purge valve and maintains vault pressure slightly above ambient.
