Scenario Creation and Power-Conditioning Strategies for Operating Power Grids with Two-Stage Stochastic Economic Dispatch

A significant difficulty associated with the use of stochastic programming to solve optimal power flow problems on a 5-minute timescale is the quality of renewable energy scenarios input by the user. This is especially true when considering power systems with high penetrations of renewable energy, e.g. wind power. This paper introduces the use of stochastic programming to solve the DC optimal power flow problem with scenarios drawn directly from high-fidelity data sets. Hence, the proposed method avoids the problem of lost physics by finding high-fidelity analogs that can describe future states of the system. Furthermore, this method can be simply extended to output multi-period scenarios to the stochastic program. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique by simulating dispatch operations on a synthetic test system over the course of a week.

A Comprehensive Method to Mitigate Forced Oscillations in Large Interconnected Power Grids

Multiple severe forced oscillation events have recently been observed across the North American interconnections and around the world. These forced oscillations have caused power swings, limited power transfer capability, damaged equipment, and persisted indefinitely until the driving source was located and removed. This paper proposes a comprehensive method to mitigate forced oscillations. Once a forced oscillation is detected, a new source location algorithm can be used to locate the source based on the oscillation mode angle without requiring system topology information. If the source cannot be quickly located and removed, a control strategy can be activated to modulate the active power of utility-scale inverterbased battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to reduce the energy of forced oscillations to a safe level and allow sufficient time for locating the exact source. The proposed source location algorithm is validated using measurements collected during the January 11, 2019 forced oscillation event in North America and other actual grid events, while the proposed control strategy is verified using the Eastern Interconnection dynamic model under the replicated January 11, 2019 forced oscillation event. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed source location algorithm can accurately identify the forced oscillation source, and the proposed control strategy can significantly reduce forced oscillation energy.

Synchrophasors-based Master State Awareness Estimator for Cybersecurity in Power Grid: Testbed Implementation & Field Demonstration

The integration of distributed energy resources(DERs) and expansion of complex network in the distribution grid requires an advanced distributed state estimator to monitor the grid health at micro-level. The distribution state estimator will improve the situational awareness and resiliency of distributed power system. This paper proposes a synchrophasors-based master state awareness (MSA) estimator to enhance the cybersecurity in distribution grid by providing a real-time estimation of system operating states to control center operators. In this paper, the proposed MSA estimator utilizes only phasor measurements, bus magnitudes and angles, from phasor measurement units (PMUs),deployed in local substations, to estimate the system states and also detects data integrity attacks, such as load tripping attack that disconnects the load. To validate the proof of concept, we implement the proposed methodology in cyber-physical testbed environment at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Electric Grid Security Testbed. Further, to address the “valley of death” and support technology commercialization, field demonstration is also performed at the Critical Infrastructure Test Range Complex(CITRC) at the INL. Our experimental results reveal a promising performance in detecting load tripping attack and providing an accurate situational awareness through an alert visualization dashboard in real-time

Scenario Creation and Power-Conditioning Strategies for Operating Power Grids with Two-Stage Stochastic Economic Dispatch: Preprint

A significant difficultly associated with the use of stochastic programming to solve optimal power flow problems on a 5-minute timescale is the quality of renewable energy scenarios input by the user. This is especially true when considering power systems with high penetrations of renewable energy, e.g. wind power. This paper introduces the use of stochastic programming to solve the DCOPF problem with scenarios drawn directly from high-fidelity data sets. Hence, the proposed method avoids the problem of lost physics by finding high-fidelity analogs that can describe future states of the system. Furthermore, this method can be simply extended to output multi-period scenarios to the stochastic program. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique on simulated dispatch operations of the RTS-GMLC over a week.

Stochastic Models, Indices & Optimization Algorithms for Pricing & Hedging Reliability Risks in Modern Power Grids: Data Plan - Princeton

We collected and cleaned the synthetic grid data produced by NREL for the Texas and New York synthetic grids. We developed a high dimensional joint stochastic model for load at the zone level, and solar and wind power productions at the asset level, capturing the spatial and temporal dependencies between all the variables, and demonstrated how such a model could be fitted to historical data. We designed and implemented a simulation engine which can produce Monte Carlo scenarios for the hourly day-ahead values of load, and solar and wind power productions at the spatial and temporal resolutions of the historical data used to fit the model. Finally we developed an open-source Python package which can, from an input grid model, efficiently use forecasts and large numbers of Monte Carlo scenarios to provide unit commitment and economic dispatch for each of these scenarios. The high dimensional stochastic model and the subsequent Monte Carlo simulation engine were implemented in the package PGscen and the corresponding UC and ED optimization programs in the package Vatic.

Machine Learning-based False Data Injection Attack Detection and Localization in Power Grids

Cyberattacks on critical infrastructures can be catastrophic and bring nations to their knees. Therefore, detecting these attacks is crucial and challenging. This paper presents a novel approach for detecting and locating cyberattacks affecting an electrical power system. The adversary employs a man-in-the-middle technique to inject false data into the communication between distributed energy resources (DER) and Microgrid Controller (MGC) with the goal of disrupting power delivery. The approach for detection and localization is based on integrating multiple machine learning-based anomaly detection models that combine network traffic data and grid measurements. Experiments are performed to assess the method's performance using a hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulation testbed which includes Modbus TCP/IP communication. Power system topology and operating conditions are based on actual topology and real-world data provided by the Holy Cross Energy utility network. Results confirm that the method can be successfully employed for detecting and localizing cyberattacks.

Multi-Fidelity Stochastic Economic Dispatch for Operating Low Carbon Power Grids

Grid operators can address the inherently stochastic nature of renewables by solving a two-stage stochastic programming model that minimizes the cost of dispatch decisions while accounting for the complex grid dynamics. It is common to use a sample average approximation to estimate the expectation of the second stage costs in this model. However, the large sample count needed for numerical accuracy makes effective modeling large-scale electric grids computationally intractable. We introduce a control variate multi-fidelity estimator for the second-stage recourse that enables high quality dispatch decisions in real-time with a reduced computational burden. We obtain a hierarchy of model fidelities by linearizing the AC power flow system representation to DC power flow, and by relaxing transmission and voltage network constraints. We evaluate the performance of our proposed method on a synthetic grid with 73 buses against a deterministic baseline with persistence forecast and a high-fidelity reference. Our analysis shows a computational speed-up of 7.62x with a minimal loss in accuracy. The multi-fidelity method is well suited to fidelity combinations that use a simplified network topology in their lower fidelity model and is an attractive option for applications where accurate grid modeling needed on a limited computational budget.

Identification of Worst Impact Zones for Power Grids During Extreme Weather Events Using Q-learning

Both the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events have been trending higher in recent years, leading to significant infrastructure damage in the electric grid. The impact of these extreme weather events is desired to be analyzed and quantified to help transmission and distribution system operators prepare for and prevent significant damage and subsequent loss of power. In this paper, we develop an approach that models the impact of extreme weather on the grid and identifies the worst impact zone using Q-learning (a reinforcement learning approach). The identification results reveal grid vulnerability to weather events and provide insights for system operators to help achieve optimal resource allocation and crew dispatch to minimize the adverse impacts of extreme weather. Simulation studies are conducted on the IEEE 123-node system to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach.

Additive manufacturing of power poles using bamboo-polymer composites: A quick solution for power grid restoration

Polymer additive manufacturing (AM) technology is rapidly growing and its transition to become an advanced manufacturing technique now offers possibilities for unconventional applications. One of these potential applications is on site additive manufacturing of power poles. During natural incidents such as storms and hurricanes, power lines can be severely damaged and there may not be sufficient spare power poles to replace. In such situations, additive manufacturing of power poles on site can offer a fast, temporary solution during emergencies. The ability of freeform manufacturing of parts with complex geometries makes large scale AM attractive for various applications; however, due to residual stress build up and need for different mechanical requirements for different applications, reinforcement of the AM feedstock is necessary. In addition to carbon and glass fibers, bio-derived fibers can also be used as a reinforcing phase, both to utilize the natural resources at the emergency area and in terms of long-term sustainability. In this project, design and additive manufacturing of a 13.1 m power pole was demonstrated. Three different feedstock material options (polystyrene, cellulose ester and polycarbonate reinforced with glass and bamboo fibers) and two different pole designs were investigated. As-printed part tensile properties both in printing and interlayer directions were measured and a power pole was printed as six pieces and put together successfully. Finally, a conceptual design of a portable power pole manufacturing approach was proposed.
