Biocatalyst discovery and design for plastics deconstruction: A multi‐scale perspective

Plastic waste accumulation poses significant environmental challenges due to a lack of economical solutions for the molecular deconstruction of diverse synthetic polymers. Biological‐based degradation offers promise but is hindered by the crystallinity, hydrophobicity, and additive complexity of plastics, which restrict biocatalyst access and activity. To address these problems, we propose a multi‐scale framework that combines detailed materials characterization, optimization of plastic‐biomolecular interfacial interactions, and enhancement of biocatalytic kinetics to develop effective plastic‐deconstructing enzymes. This approach leverages principles from reaction kinetics, transport and interfacial phenomena, and enzyme engineering to systematically address barriers across diverse plastic types. Our framework aims to accelerate the discovery and optimization of biocatalysts capable of scalable, selective, and efficient deconstruction of plastic waste. These advances hold potential to enable sustainable biological recycling and upcycling pathways, contributing to global efforts in mitigating plastic pollution and promoting circular material economies.

Strategic Melamine Coating on Lithium Metal for Li 3 N-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase and Improved Battery Cycling Stability

The practical applications of lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) are limited by challenges such as dendrite formation and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), especially at higher C-rates. Here, this study introduces melamine-coated Li metal anodes (LMAs), forming a Li 3 N-rich SEI layer that improves ionic conductivity and mechanical stability. The optimized melamine-coated LMA demonstrated uniform coverage resulting in denser Li deposition, nearly doubled cycle life (~148 cycles at 0.5 C, 1C = 4.1 mA cm -2 ), compared to Bare-Li. These findings emphasize that coating materials-induced beneficial SEI components could lead to improvement of LMB performance.

QED corrections to the thermal neutrino interaction rate

Abstract Motivated by precision computations of neutrino decoupling at MeV temperatures, we show how QED corrections to the thermal neutrino interaction rate can be related to the electron-positron spectral function as well as an effective$$\overline{\nu }\nu \gamma $$vertex. The spectral function is needed both in a timelike and in a spacelike domain, and for both of its physical polarization states (transverse and longitudinal with respect to spatial momentum). Incorporating an NLO evaluation of this spectral function, an estimate of the$$\overline{\nu }\nu \gamma $$vertex, and HTL resummation of scatterings mediated by soft Bose-enhancedt-channel photons, we compute the interaction rate as a function of the neutrino momentum and flavour. Effects on the – (0. . .2)% level are found, noticeably smaller than a previous estimate of a related quantity.

Physics-Based Modeling and Simulation of Emerging Battery Technologies for Aerospace

Recently there is a growing interest in the aviation sector to reduce air and noise pollution. Electrochemical energy storage devices such as batteries coupled with a distributed electric propulsion system can reduce noise concerns as well as emissions and allow the concept of Urban Air Mobility to come to fruition. The battery performance needs to improve considerably compared from current state-of-art Li-ion battery (about 200Wh/Kg) to realize all-electric passenger jet for short flights (up to 690 miles). NASA is exploring lithium-oxygen battery chemistry to power hybrid (battery powered electrical system) and all-electric aircraft for short distance and long-distance flights. Li-O2 is one of the advanced Li-ion technologies that promise to provide specific energy of more than 750Wh/Kg. For this presentation, we present our work on improving power density of Li-O2 batteries through the use of multiphysics simulations. Next, a path is outlined to port these model to simulate performance for a new battery chemistry for space application, Li-CO2. Li-CO2 uses carbon dioxide as the active material instead of oxygen. Although this technology is in its early development, the offers two benefits: it can be used as a CO2 scrubber, as oxygen is one of the by-products on charging, and as a backup or a standalone battery for various Mars or Venus missions, where the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere is high and need battery to operate at higher temperatures.

Lepto-axiogenesis with light right-handed neutrinos

We study lepto-axiogenesis in theories where the right-handed neutrino is light enough that its dynamics affect the determination of the baryon asymmetry. When compared with theories of high-scale lepto-axiogenesis where the Majorana neutrino mass may be treated as an effective dimension-five operator, we find that the predicted saxion mass is lower. Two distinct scenarios emerge. In the first, processes that generate the baryon asymmetry are in equilibrium down to the mass of the right-handed neutrino. In the second, the relevant processes never reach equilibrium; the baryon number freezes in. We comment on implications for supersymmetric spectra and discuss constraints on late decays of supersymmetric relics and from dark radiation. In contrast to high-scale lepto-axiogenesis, which predicts superpartners with masses of 10–100 TeV or more, we find this scenario is consistent with a wider range of superpartner masses, all the way down to current direct search bounds.

Revealing the Roles of CuF 2 /NiF 2 Incorporation in the Electrochemical Performance of FeF 3 Cathodes in Solid‐State Batteries

Mixed metal fluorides have been considered as a promising candidate to lower the voltage hysteresis of conversion-type iron fluoride cathodes, but their cycling stability is limited due to transition metal dissolution and interphase growth in liquid electrolyte batteries. Here, we study the role of incorporating CuF 2 and NiF 2 in the electrochemical performance of FeF 3 cathode in halide-based solid-state batteries to test whether we can transfer the kinetic benefit of low voltage hysteresis to solid-state batteries while using solid electrolyte to eliminate transition metal dissolution and stabilize the interphase. Synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy results indicated the redox reactions are attributed to Cu 0 /Cu + and Fe 0 /Fe 2+ in 25CuF 2 -75FeF 3 and Ni 0 /Ni 2+ and Fe 0 /Fe 3+ in 10NiF 2 -90FeF 3 . While no apparent improvement in electrode kinetics can be observed, the incorporation of CuF 2 and NiF 2 can largely improve the cycling stability of FeF 3 cathodes. In conclusion, the results demonstrate the advantages of using solid-state concept to improve the cycling stability of conversion-type cathodes.

Robust Biaxial Anisotropy and Switchable Néel Vectors in LaFeO 3 Epitaxial Films

Antiferromagnets with highly stable but switchable Néel vectors are desired for antiferromagnetic spintronics with ultrafast speed and terahertz frequencies. Electrical switching of antiferromagnetic insulators has been demonstrated using binary antiferromagnets, while large families of complex antiferromagnets such as perovskites are largely unexplored. Here, we show that epitaxial LaFeO 3 thin films on SrTiO 3 (001) exhibit clear, robust biaxial anisotropy with a spin-flop field of a few tesla. Angular-dependent spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) characterizations of Pt/LaFeO 3 bilayers with the current channel along SrTiO 3 [100] and [110] reveal distinct, intriguing shapes and field dependence. Simulations using a macrospin model accurately describe the main behavior and fine features of the SMR data from which key antiferromagnetic parameters are extracted. Furthermore, remanent SMR measurement confirms the high fidelity of the Néel vector along either easy axis of the biaxial anisotropy, indicating that epitaxial films of LaFeO 3 and potentially other perovskite antiferromagnets offer an attractive platform for antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Shear and combustion characterization of printable ammonium perchlorate composite propellant formulations

Seven formulations of ammonium perchlorate composite propellant (APCP) are developed and their properties relevant for successful additive manufacture are characterized. Extrusion in a custom-built 3D printing system and spindle viscometry are used to collect viscosity measurements of curing primary and non-curing secondary versions of the formulations. The formulations that behave similarly to a Bingham plastic, with apparent viscosities between 4 and 8 thousand Pa*s at 30 minutes post-mix, are determined to be most suitable for printing applications. Measurements of one material show a yield stress of 1 kPa. Ambient pressure burn rates of 2.0–2.9 mm/s were measured for the compositions tested. All measured burn rates were comparable to the lower end of typical burn rates for APCP. In conclusion, the results of the characterization demonstrate a propellant suitable for use in a 3D printing system.

Elucidation of Design Criteria for V‐based Redox Mediators: Structure‐Function Relationships that Dictate Rates of Heterogeneous Electron Transfer

Redox mediators are attractive solutions for addressing the stringent kinetic stipulations required for efficient energy conversion processes. In this work, we compare the electrochemical properties of four vanadium complexes, namely [V(acac) 3 ], [V 6 O 7 (OMe) 12 ], [ n Bu 4 N] 3 [V 6 O 13 (TRIS NO2 ) 2 ], and [ n Bu 4 N] 5 [V 18 O 46 (NO 3 )] in non-aqueous solutions on glassy carbon electrodes. The goal of this study is to investigate the electron transfer kinetics and diffusivity of these compounds under identical experimental conditions to develop an understanding of structure-function relationships that dictate the physicochemical properties of vanadium oxide assemblies. Complex selection was dictated by two criteria – (1) nuclearity of the transition metal complexes (2) distribution of electron density in the native electronic configuration. In conclusion, our analyses establish that electronic communication between metal centers significantly impacts charge transfer kinetics of these vanadium-based compounds.

High‐Entropy Lithium Argyrodite Solid Electrolytes Enabling Stable All‐Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract Superionic solid electrolytes (SEs) are essential for bulk‐type solid‐state battery (SSB) applications. Multicomponent SEs are recently attracting attention for their favorable charge‐transport properties, however a thorough understanding of how configurational entropy (ΔS conf ) affects ionic conductivity is lacking. Here, we successfully synthesized a series of halogen‐rich lithium argyrodites with the general formula Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl x Br 1.5‐x (0≤x≤1.5). Using neutron powder diffraction and 31 P magic‐angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the S 2− /Cl − /Br − occupancy on the anion sublattice was quantitatively analyzed. We show that disorder positively affects Li‐ion dynamics, leading to a room‐temperature ionic conductivity of 22.7 mS cm −1 (9.6 mS cm −1 in cold‐pressed state) for Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 (ΔS conf =1.98R). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental evidence that configurational entropy of the anion sublattice correlates with ion mobility. Our results indicate the possibility of improving ionic conductivity in ceramic ion conductors by tailoring the degree of compositional complexity. Moreover, the Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 SE allowed for stable cycling of single‐crystal LiNi 0.9 Co 0.06 Mn 0.04 O 2 (s‐NCM90) composite cathodes in SSB cells, emphasizing that dual‐substituted lithium argyrodites hold great promise in enabling high‐performance electrochemical energy storage.

The Synthesis and Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization of Energetic Norbornene Materials

Energetic norbornenes are promising candidates toward the development of new energetic polymers due to the synthetic versatility of norbornene ring-opening metathesis polymerizations used in commercial applications. We report the synthesis of two energetic norbornene materials that can be made in two steps with modest yields, containing either trinitroethanol or fluorodinitroethanol substituents. The norbornene monomers were then polymerized, and the polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), contact angle measurements, and proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies ( 1 H and 13 C{ 1 H} NMR). Additionally, small-scale safety data consisting of electrostatic discharge (ESD), friction (FS), and impact (IS) sensitivities were measured for the norbornene monomers and their resulting polymers. These analyses revealed that energetic norbornene materials are relatively insensitive and have densities comparable to that of TNT (1.47–1.81 g·cm –3 ).
