Chiral superconductivity from a parent Chern band and its non-Abelian generalization

Here, we propose a minimal model starting from a parent Chern band with quartic dispersion that can describe the spin-valley polarized electrons in rhombohedral tetralayer graphene. The interplay between repulsive and attractive interactions on top of that parent Chern band is studied. We conduct standard self-consistent mean-field calculations, and find a rich phase diagram that consists of metal, quantum anomalous Hall crystal, chiral topological superconductor, as well as trivial gapped Bose-Einstein condensate. In particular, there exists a topological phase transition from the chiral superconductor to the Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. Motivated by the recent experimental and theoretical studies of composite Fermi liquid in rhombohedral stacked multilayer graphene, we further generalize the physical electron model to its composite fermion counterpart based on a field theory analysis. The chiral superconductor phase of the composite fermion becomes the non-abelian Moore-Read quantum Hall phase. We argue that a chiral (pseudo-)spin liquid phase can emerge in the vicinity of this Moore-Read quantum Hall phase. Our work suggests rhombohedral multilayer graphene as a potential platform for rich correlated topological phases.

Automated piezoresponse force microscopy domain tracking during fast thermally stimulated phase transition in CuInP 2 S 6

Real-time tracking of dynamic nanoscale processes such as phase transitions by scanning probe microscopy is a challenging task, typically requiring extensive and laborious human supervision. Smart strategies to track specific regions of interest (ROI) in the system during such transformations in a fast and automated manner are necessary to study the evolution of the microscopic changes in such dynamic systems. In this work, we realize automated ROI tracking in piezoresponse force microscopy during a fast (≈0.8 °C s –1 ) thermally stimulated ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition in CuInP 2 S 6 . We use a combination of fast (1 frame per second) sparse scanning with compressed sensing image reconstruction and real-time offset correction via phase cross correlation. The applied methodology enables in situ fast and automated functional nanoscale characterization of a certain ROI during external stimulation that generates sample drift and changes local functionality.

Universal Magnetic Phases in Twisted Bilayer MoTe 2

Twisted bilayer MoTe 2 (tMoTe 2 ) has emerged as a robust platform for exploring correlated topological phases, yet the evolution of its magnetism and topology with twist angle remains an open question. Here, we systematically map the magnetic phase diagram of tMoTe 2 by using local optical spectroscopy and scanning nanoSQUID-on-tip magnetometry. We identify spontaneous ferromagnetism at filling factors ν = −1 and −3 across twist angles from 2.1° to 3.7°, revealing a universal, twist-angle-insensitive ferromagnetic phase. At 2.1°, we further observe robust ferromagnetism at ν = −5, absent at larger twist angles. Temperature-dependent measurements reveal a contrasting twist-angle dependence of the Curie temperatures between ν = −1 and −3, indicating a distinct interplay between the exchange interactions and bandwidth for the two Chern bands. Despite broken time-reversal symmetry, no topological gap is detected at ν = −3. Furthermore, our results establish a global framework for understanding and controlling magnetic order in tMoTe 2 .

Costas loop lock detection in the advanced receiver

The advanced receiver currently being developed uses a Costas digital loop to demodulate the subcarrier. Previous analyses of lock detector algorithms for Costas loops have ignored the effects of the inherent correlation between the samples of the phase-error process. Accounting for this correlation is necessary to achieve the desired lock-detection probability for a given false-alarm rate. Both analysis and simulations are used to quantify the effects of phase correlation on lock detection for the square-law and the absolute-value type detectors. Results are obtained which depict the lock-detection probability as a function of loop signal-to-noise ratio for a given false-alarm rate. The mathematical model and computer simulation show that the square-law detector experiences less degradation due to phase jitter than the absolute-value detector and that the degradation in detector signal-to-noise ratio is more pronounced for square-wave than for sine-wave signals.

Correlated Hofstadter spectrum and flavour phase diagram in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

In magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, the moiré superlattice potential gives rise to narrow electronic bands that support a multitude of many-body quantum phases. Further richness arises in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, where the interplay between moiré and magnetic length scales leads to fractal Hofstadter subbands. In this strongly correlated Hofstadter platform, multiple experiments have identified gapped topological and correlated states, but little is known about the phase transitions between them in the intervening compressible regimes. Here we simultaneously unveil sequences of broken-symmetry Chern insulators and resolve sharp phase transitions between competing states with different topological quantum numbers and different occupations of the spin-valley flavour. Our measurements determine the energy spectrum of interacting Hofstadter subbands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene and map out the phase diagram of flavour occupancy. In addition, we observe full lifting of the degeneracy of the zeroth Landau levels together with level crossings, indicating moiré valley splitting. We propose a unified flavour polarization mechanism to understand the intricate interplay of topology, interactions and symmetry breaking as a function of density and applied magnetic field in this system.

Correlated signals of first-order phase transitions and primordial black hole evaporation

Fermi balls produced in a cosmological first-order phase transition may collapse to primordial black holes (PBHs) if the fermion dark matter particles that comprise them interact via a sufficiently strong Yukawa force. We show that phase transitions described by a quartic thermal effective potential with vacuum energy, 0.1 ≲ B 1/4 /MeV ≲ 10 3 , generate PBHs of mass, 10 –20 ≲ M PBH /M ⊙ ≲ 10 –16 , and gravitational waves from the phase transition (at THEIA/μAres) can be correlated with an isotropic extragalactic X-ray/γ-ray background from PBH evaporation (at AMEGO-X/e-ASTROGAM).

Structural transition and uranium valence change in UTe 2 at high pressure revealed by x-ray diffraction and spectroscopy

High-pressure x-ray diffraction up to 30 GPa, in conjunction with resonant emission x-ray spectroscopy and partial fluorescence yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy up to 52 GPa, were used to study how the structural and electronic properties of UTe2 evolve with pressure at room temperature. An orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition was observed to occur between 5 and 7 GPa, with a large volume collapse of nearly 10% and a nearest U-U distance increase by about 4%. This lower-to-higher symmetry transition suggests less 5⁢f electron participation in bonding when the weakly correlated superconducting phase in the tetragonal structure of UTe 2 appears. Beyond 7 GPa, no new structural transitions were found up to 30 GPa. The resonant x-ray emission spectra clearly demonstrate an intermediate valence of U, nearly +3.74 at 1.8 GPa and room temperature, and reveal that the U valence shifts towards 4+, passes through a peak at 2.8 GPa, then decreases towards 3+ and settles down to a nearly constant value above 15 GPa. These experiments reveal that some fundamental structural and valence changes occur in UTe 2 at relatively low pressures, which could be responsible for the interplay between unconventional superconductivity, magnetic ordering, and weakly correlated superconductivity that is manifested in the temperature-pressure phase diagram of UTe 2 .

Chronology and pyroclastic stratigraphy of the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens, Washington

The eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980 can be subdivided into six phases: the paroxysmal phase I, the early Plinian phase II, the early ash flow phase III, the climactic phase IV, the late ash flow phase V, and phase VI, the activity of which consisted of a low-energy ash plume. These phases are correlated with stratigraphic subunits of ash-fall tephra and pyroclastic flow deposits. Sustained vertical discharge of phase II produced evolved dacite with high S/Cl ratios. Ash flow activity of phase III is attributed to decreases in gas content, indicated by reduced S/Cl ratios and increased clast density of the less evolved gray pumice. Climactic events are attributed to vent clearing and exhaustion of the evolved dacite.

Performance of Residual Carrier Array Feed Combining in Correlated Noise

An array feed combining system for the recovery of SNR loss due to antenna reflector deformation has been implemented and is currently being evaluated on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory 34 meter DSS-13 antenna. In this system, the defocused signal field captured by a focal plane array feed is recovered using real-time signal processing and signal combining techniques. The current signal processing and signal combining algorithms are optimum under the assumption that the white Gaussian noise processes in the received signals from different array elements are mutually uncorrelated. Experimental data at DSS-13 indicate that these noise processes are indeed mutually correlated. The main result of this paper is an analytical derivation of the actual SNR performance of the current suboptimal signal combining algorithm in this correlated noises environment. The analysis here shows that the combined signal SNR can either be improved or degraded depending on the relation between the array signal and noise correlation coefficient phases. Further performance improvement will require the development of signal combining methods that take into account the correlated noises.

Correlation strength and orbital differentiation across the phase diagram of plutonium metal

We compare the trends on the strength of electronic correlations across the different phases of elemental Pu focusing on its site and orbital dependence, using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations within the vertex corrected one crossing approximation. We find that Pu-5f states are more correlated in δ -Pu, followed by some crystallographic sites in α and β phases. In addition, we observe that Pu-5f 5/2 and Pu-5f 7/2 orbital differentiation is a general feature of this material, as is site differentiation in the low-symmetry phases. The Pu-5f 5/2 states show Fermi liquid like behavior, whereas the Pu-5f 7/2 states remaining incoherent down to very low temperatures. We correlate the correlation strength in the different phases to their structure and the Pu-5 f occupancy of their crystallographic sites.

Mapping twist-tuned multiband topology in bilayer WSe 2

Semiconductor moiré superlattices have been shown to host a wide array of interaction-driven ground states. However, twisted homobilayers have been difficult to study in the limit of large moiré wavelengths, where interactions are most dominant. In this study, we conducted local electronic compressibility measurements of twisted bilayer WSe 2 (tWSe 2 ) at small twist angles. We demonstrated multiple topological bands that host a series of Chern insulators at zero magnetic field near a “magic angle” around 1.23°. Using a locally applied electric field, we induced a topological quantum-phase transition at one hole per moiré unit cell. Finally, our work establishes the topological phase diagram of a generalized Kane-Mele-Hubbard model in tWSe 2 , demonstrating a tunable platform for strongly correlated topological phases.

A New Interferometer for Monitoring Atmospheric Phase Fluctuations

Water vapor in the Earth's troposphere introduces an extra electrical path in the propagation of radio signals through the atmosphere. The distribution of water vapor is irregular and distorts the wavefronts of incoming radio waves, limiting the angular resolution that can be achieved with ground-based telescopes. The level of fluctuations depends both on the location of the site ,and on the prevailing atmospheric conditions. The ability to measure the fluctuations is therefore important when choosing a site for a new instrument, and for scheduling observations of existing telescopes. Existing phase monitors are radio interferometers that monitor monochromatic beacon tones from geostationary communications satellites at a frequency of about 12 GHz. They have a classical heterodyne design based on two satellite receiving antennas; each has a front-end for amplifying and down-converting the incoming signals using a local oscillator that is phase-locked to a common reference frequency. In addition to multiple phase-locked loops these instruments require expensive phase-stable cabling to reduce the effects of thermal drift. The new system uses two consumer 18" digital satellite TV dishes to monitor satellite TV broadcast signals over a bandwidth of 500 MHz (12.2 to 12.7 GHz). The novel design eliminates the need for phase-locked loops and thermally stable components, and uses a pair of Gilbert Cell multipliers to perform the broadband correlation. A phase monitor has been been built and deployed at the site of the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association Millimeter Array in Northern California, and has been operating successfully since June 1998, measuring the difference in electrical path length for parallel lines of sight to the satellite separated by a baseline of 100 m. With a hardware cost of approximately $4000, it is much cheaper than previous instruments, and the low power requirements and high reliability make the system suitable for site testing in remote locations.

Dynamical vertex approximation for many-electron systems with spontaneously broken SU(2) symmetry

We generalize the formalism of the dynamical vertex approximation (DΓA)—a diagrammatic extension of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT)—to treat magnetically ordered phases. To this aim, we start by concisely illustrating the many-electron formalism for performing ladder resummations of Feynman diagrams in systems with broken SU(2) symmetry associated to ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AF) order. We then analyze the algorithmic simplifications introduced by taking the local approximation of the two-particle irreducible vertex functions in the Bethe-Salpeter equations, which defines the ladder implementation of DΓA for magnetic systems. The relation of this assumption with the DMFT limit of large coordination-number/high dimensions is explicitly discussed. As a last step, we derive the expression for the ladder DΓA self-energy in the FM- and AF-ordered phases of the Hubbard model. The physics emerging in the AF-ordered case is explicitly illustrated by means of approximated calculations based on a static mean-field input for DΓA equations. The results obtained capture fundamental aspects of both metallic and insulating ground states of two-dimensional antiferromagnets, providing a reliable compass for future, more extensive applications of our approach. Furthermore, possible routes to further develop diagrammatic-based treatments of magnetic phases in correlated electron systems are briefly outlined in the Conclusions.

Moiré nematic phase in twisted double bilayer graphene

Graphene moiré superlattices display electronic flat bands. At integer fillings of these flat bands, energy gaps due to strong electron-electron interactions are generally observed. However, the presence of other correlation-driven phases in twisted graphitic systems at non-integer fillings is unclear. Here, we report the existence of threefold rotational symmetry breaking in twisted double bilayer graphene. Using spectroscopic imaging over large and uniform areas to characterize the direction and degree of C 3 symmetry breaking, we find it to be prominent only at energies corresponding to the flat bands and nearly absent in the remote bands. We demonstrate that the magnitude of the rotational symmetry breaking does not depend on the degree of the heterostrain or the displacement field, being instead a manifestation of an interaction-driven electronic nematic phase. We show that the nematic phase is a primary order that arises from the normal metal state over a wide range of doping away from charge. Furthermore, our modelling suggests that the nematic instability is not associated with the local scale of the graphene lattice, but is an emergent phenomenon at the scale of the moiré lattice.
