Detailed design of a 100-We multicell thermionic power supply.

Confirmation of the general trends of a previously reported parametric study of plutonia-fueled thermionic generators in a detailed 100-We generator design. The detailed design takes into account the additional weight of system-integration components and shows that design refinements of all aeroshell components are possible when a specific generator configuration is considered. An optimized 100-We thermionic power supply design is presented, reflecting a 0.98 reliability goal after five years of operation. The optimum multicell array consists of 28 isomite converters, each producing approximately 3.6 We at end-of-life. The optimum arrangement of converters in the aeroshell is a four-column, seven-row stacking configuration connected electrically as a two-column, 14-row array.

Performance of a flight qualified, thermoelectrically temperature controlled QCM sensor with power supply, thermal controller and signal processor

A thermoelectrically temperature controlled quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) system was developed for the measurement of ion thrustor generated mercury contamination on spacecraft. Meaningful flux rate measurements dictated an accurately held sensing crystal temperature despite spacecraft surface temperature variations from -35 C to +60 C over the flight temperature range. An electronic control unit was developed with magentic amplifier transformer secondary power supply, thermal control electronics, crystal temperature analog conditioning and a multiplexed 16 bit frequency encoder.

Commissioning of the Power Supplies and Coils of the SMART Tokamak

The small aspect ratio tokamak (SMART) is a spherical tokamak (ST) that offers unique capabilities for studying the potential of negative triangularity. It has been designed, constructed, and is currently being operated by the Plasma Science Fusion Technology (PSFT) Laboratory at the University of Seville. SMART has a total of 21 coils, organized into seven independent circuits and driven by five modular power supplies (PS). The PS operation relies on switching converter technology based on IGBT and supercapacitors (SCs). The PS delivers predefined current waveforms to the copper coil system consisting of the central solenoid (CS), 12 toroidal field (TF) coils, three series pairs of poloidal field (PF) coils, and two independent PF coils. This study details the commissioning and validation of the PS toroidal and solenoid coils, as well as the assembly of coils in SMART. The maximum rated current and slope were measured, along with the series impedance of the coils, the output current ripple, and the noise levels. The internal parameters of the SCs were measured, and optimized current profiles were proposed to enhance overall performance. A comparison has been made between the theoretical values and the experimental results, providing insight into the performance of the PS and areas for improvement.

A 300 kA Pulsed Power Supply for LBNF

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) will produce the worlds most intense neutrino beam. Three series connected magnetic horns will require 5kV, 300kA, 800$\mu$s pulses at a rate of 0.7Hz to focus the beam. Fermilab has designed and built pulsed high current supplies for horns in the past. Pulsed currents of 205 kA for Neutrinos at Main Injector (NuMI - NOvA), focusing a 120 GeV beam, and 170 kA for Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB - MiniBooNE) for focusing an 8 GeV beam have been operational for about 18 years. While the magnetic horns are expected to be replaced, the LBNF horn power supply is expected to last the lifetime of the project, 30 years. A resonant, half sine wave pulser was used for NuMI and BNB and has many practical advantages. The system has impedance limited fault currents by design, albeit large ones. That along with the resonant behavior means that thyristor switches are well suited. Many fault modes of the system have also been calculated. Several circuit changes were incorporated so that a single fault can be tolerated. The supply must be reversable to enable both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos to be produced. These reversal requirements required a significant amount of mechanical design and consideration to allow for quick reversal of all the semiconductors.

Westinghouse programs in pulsed homopolar power supplies

This document details Westinghouse's ongoing study of homopolar machines since 1929 with the major effort occurring in the early 1970's to the present. The effort has enabled Westinghouse to develop expertise in the technology required for the design, fabrication and testing of such machines. This includes electrical design, electromagnetic analysis, current collection, mechanical design, advanced cooling, stress analysis, transient rotor performance, bearing analysis and seal technology. Westinghouse is using this capability to explore the use of homopolar machines as pulsed power supplies for future systems in both military and commercial applications.

The Recent Improvements of the SNS Extraction Kicker Power Supplies

A total of 14 extraction kickers., with one as the hot spare., are in service to extract protons out of the storage ring at the SNS. The jitter issue and the short lifetime of the switches were resolved after the thyratrons were replaced with solid state switches in 2018. This paper discusses the recent improvements. Two thyristor switches suffered overheating damage in separate incidents. One was due to the oil pump failure and the other was the result of a disconnected oil hose. An ultrasonic flow meter and a fiber optic temperature monitoring system have been installed for each extraction kicker power supply. The flow meter continuously monitors the entire tank oil flow. The temperature monitor detects the thyristor switch real-time temperatures in three locations. Fault thresholds are selected so that the thyristor switches are protected from overheating damage. Alarms are configured to alert staff to take actions before faults occur. In addition., the cause of an intermittent misfire issue was identified, and the solution was implemented. Lastly., a future oscilloscope upgrade and an oil level sensor are discussed.

Vacuum chamber translation/positioning mechanism and welding power supply controller

Welding in the vacuum of space represents an important and fundamental problem for space exploration. Repairs or connection of metal components on orbit or during travel to the moon or distant planets may be required. Cracks or holes in spacecraft skin or supporting structures external to the pressurized section will require some type of repair that must be permanently made to the skin or support by welding. The development of a translation/positioning system that will permit research into welding of metal samples in a small vacuum chamber located at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is addressed. The system and associated software was tested to the extent possible without the availability of the welder power supply or control computer that must be supplied by MSFC. Software has been developed for straight line welding. More extensive and varied translations are possible with simple alterations to the operating software to use the full capabilities of this three axes system. The source code 'VW.BAS' has been provided to serve as an example for further development of the vacuum welder translation system.

Analyzing Power Supply and Demand on the ISS

Station Power and Energy Evaluation Determiner (SPEED) is a Java application program for analyzing the supply and demand aspects of the electrical power system of the International Space Station (ISS). SPEED can be executed on any computer that supports version 1.4 or a subsequent version of the Java Runtime Environment. SPEED includes an analysis module, denoted the Simplified Battery Solar Array Model, which is a simplified engineering model of the ISS primary power system. This simplified model makes it possible to perform analyses quickly. SPEED also includes a user-friendly graphical-interface module, an input file system, a parameter-configuration module, an analysis-configuration-management subsystem, and an output subsystem. SPEED responds to input information on trajectory, shadowing, attitude, and pointing in either a state-of-charge mode or a power-availability mode. In the state-of-charge mode, SPEED calculates battery state-of-charge profiles, given a time-varying power-load profile. In the power-availability mode, SPEED determines the time-varying total available solar array and/or battery power output, given a minimum allowable battery state of charge.

High Voltage Power Supply Design Guide for Space

This book is written for newcomers to the topic of high voltage (HV) in space and is intended to replace an earlier (1970s) out-of-print document. It discusses the designs, problems, and their solutions for HV, mostly direct current, electric power, or bias supplies that are needed for space scientific instruments and devices, including stepping supplies. Output voltages up to 30kV are considered, but only very low output currents, on the order of microamperes. The book gives a brief review of the basic physics of electrical insulation and breakdown problems, especially in gases. It recites details about embedment and coating of the supplies with polymeric resins. Suggestions on HV circuit parts follow. Corona or partial discharge testing on the HV parts and assemblies is discussed both under AC and DC impressed test voltages. Electric field analysis by computer on an HV device is included in considerable detail. Finally, there are many examples given of HV power supplies, complete with some of the circuit diagrams and color photographs of the layouts.
