Critical lensing and kurtosis near a critical point in the QCD phase diagram in and out of equilibrium

In this work, we study the lensing effect of the QCD critical point on hydrodynamic trajectories and its consequences on the net-proton kurtosis $\kappa$ 4 . Including critical behavior by means of the BEST Collaboration equation of state (EoS), we first consider a scenario in equilibrium, then compare with hydrodynamic 0+1⁢D simulations with Bjorken expansion, including both shear and bulk viscous terms. Here, we find that, both in and out of equilibrium, the size and shape of the critical region directly affect if the signal will survive through the dynamical evolution.

Exploring the QCD Phase Diagram with Fluctuations

Here, we report on recent progress concerning the theoretical description of event-by-event fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. Specifically, we discuss a new Cooper–Frye particlization routine — the subensemble sampler — which is designed to incorporate effects of global conservation laws, thermal smearing and resonance decays on fluctuation measurements in various rapidity acceptances. First applications of the method to heavy-ion collisions at the LHC energies are presented, and further necessary steps to analyze fluctuations from the RHIC beam energy scan are outlined.

Systems and methods for generating phase diagrams for metastable material states

A system can include one or more processors configured to access at least one parameter of a material, generate a plurality of structures of the material using the at least one parameter, determine a state of each structure of the plurality of structures using the at least one parameter, determine a difference between the state of each structure of the plurality of structures and a ground state value, evaluate a convergence condition responsive to determining the difference between the state of each structure of the plurality of structures and the ground state value, and output at least one structure of the plurality of structures responsive to the convergence condition being satisfied.

Theory of strain phase equilibria and diagrams

Chemical phase equilibria and phase diagrams are well established and have served as indispensable guides for designing materials through chemical tuning. However, a general thermodynamic theory for strain phase equilibria remains elusive despite extensive studies which have revealed dramatic impacts of mechanical strain on the stability of phases and domain states in solid-state materials. Here, we establish the thermodynamic theory of strain equilibria and a general framework for efficiently constructing multidomain and multiphase diagrams of arbitrarily strained solids under incoherent conditions. As examples, we obtain temperature-strain phase diagrams of ferroelectric PbTiO 3 , strongly correlated VO 2 , and unconventional ferroelectric Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 . We reveal the analogs of the Gibbs phase rules, multiple- and multi-critical points, common-tangent construction, and level rule in strain equilibria to those in the familiar chemical phase equilibria. Finally, our strain equilibria theory offers a powerful framework for predicting the thermodynamic stability of structural phases and domains in strained solids and for guiding the strain engineering of their functional properties.
