Methyl Termination of p-Type Silicon Enables Selective Photoelectrochemical CO 2 Reduction by a Molecular Ruthenium Catalyst

Methyl-terminated p-type silicon photoelectrodes selectively drive CO 2 reduction by a homogeneous [Ru(tpy)(Mebim-py)(NCCH 3 )] 2+ catalyst (tpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine, Mebim-py = 1-methylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene-3-(2′-pyridine)). A 460 mV photovoltage is quantified for the photoelectrode. Under 1 sun illumination, this system achieves a Faradaic efficiency of 87% for CO at −1.7 V vs Fc +/0 , matching reports of the same catalyst at metallic electrodes operating at −2.1 V. When 5% water is introduced, the CH 3 -terminated Si photoelectrode remains stable, selectivity for CO is retained, and current density increases. Methyl termination suppresses the competitive hydrogen evolution observed for H-terminated Si photoelectrodes, which under the same conditions produce ca. 60% CO and 8% H 2 and have unstable performance. Furthermore, these results establish that a semiconductor photoelectrode can power a molecular CO 2 reduction catalyst without hydrogen evolution by the photoelectrode itself. Methyl termination of p-Si allows CO 2 reduction to kinetically outcompete proton reduction, revealing an important design principle for selective fuel formation.

A methodology for experimentally based determination of gap shrinkage and effective lifetimes in the emitter and base of p-n junction solar cells and other p-n junction devices

An experimentally based methodology that determines the effective gap shrinkage and lifetime in the emitter of a p-n junction solar cell is described which provides an experimental means for assessing the importance of gap shrinkage relative to that of large recombination rates in the highly doped emitter. The base lifetime is also determined. The methodology pertains to a solar cell after the junction is formed, so that each material parameter determined includes the effects of the processing used in junction fabrication. The methodology consists of strategy and procedures for designing experiments and interpreting data consistently with the physical mechanisms governing device behavior. This careful linking to the device physics uncover the material parameters concealed in the data. To illustrate the procedures, they are applied to an n(+)-p solar cell having substrate resistivity of about 0.1 ohm-cm.

Longitudinal and transverse spin transfer to $Λ$ and $\overline{Λ}$ hyperons in polarized $p$ + $p$ collisions at √s = 200 GeV

The longitudinal and transverse spin transfers to Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) hyperons in polarized proton-proton collisions are expected to be sensitive to the helicity and transversity distributions, respectively, of (anti)strange quarks in the proton, and to the corresponding polarized fragmentation functions. We report improved measurements of the longitudinal spin transfer coefficient, D LL , and the transverse spin transfer coefficient, D TT , to Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ in polarized proton-proton collisions at √s = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The dataset includes longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 52 pb –1 , and transversely polarized proton-proton collisions with a similar integrated luminosity. Both datasets have about twice the statistics of previous results and cover a kinematic range of |η Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) | < 1.2 and transverse momentum p T , Λ($\overline{Λ}$) up to 8GeV/c. We also report the first measurements of the hyperon spin transfer coefficients D LL and D TT as a function of the fractional jet momentum z carried by the hyperon, which can provide more direct constraints on the polarized fragmentation functions

Molecular simulation of the separation of toluene and p-xylene with the thermally-robust ionic liquid triphenyl-p-phenyl sulfonyl phenyl phosphonium

In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to evaluate the behavior of toluene (TOL) and p-xylene (XYL) within three different solvents: n -hexane (HEX), n -heptane (HEP), and a thermally-robust ionic liquid (triphenyl-p-phenyl sulfonyl phenyl phosphonium + bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (TPSP + Tf 2 N)). Several different temperatures are explored, while the solvation structures, energetics, and dynamics of TOL and XYL are evaluated. The solvation free energy (ΔG solv ) and transfer free energy (ΔG transfer ) of TOL and XYL are calculated using thermodynamic integration (TI). The transfer free energy of XYL from HEP/HEX to TPSP + Tf 2 N is more favorable than that of TOL over the entire temperature range, while the transfer of both TOL and XYL becomes less favorable as the temperature increases. The diffusion rates of TOL and XYL are lower in the ionic liquid when compared to HEP and HEX, but the thermal stability of TPSP + Tf 2 N may allow for higher operating temperatures and accelerated mass transport rates.

Reconstruction of neutral-triggered charged recoil jets in √ s = 200 GeV p+p collisions at the STAR experiment

Jets — collimated sprays of hadrons — are produced by hard-scattered partons during the early stages of heavy ion collisions. Hence, they provide a valuable probe of the complex multi-particle dynamics within the hot, dense medium produced in such collisions. In particular, the study of jets recoiling from direct photons (γ dir +jet) and those recoiling from energetic π 0 (π 0 +jet) may shed light on the path-length and initial flavor (quark vs. gluon) dependence of the energy-loss experienced by a parton as it traverses the medium. We present here measurements of the yields of charged recoil jets tagged by γ dir and π 0 in p+p collisions at √S = 200 GeV. These measurements will serve as a vacuum fragmentation reference for an upcoming measurement in Au + Au collisions.

First-order antiferromagnetic transitions of SrMn 2 P 2 and CaMn 2 P 2 single crystals containing corrugated-honeycomb Mn sublattices

Significance With rare exceptions, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in zero magnetic field is thermodynamically of second order where the thermal-average magnetic moments of the magnetic atoms (ordered moments) vary continuously on cooling through the AFM ordering temperature T N with no latent heat at the transition. Such materials include the AFM pnictides CaMn 2 As 2 , SrMn 2 As 2 , CaMn 2 Sb 2 , SrMn 2 Sb 2 , and CaMn 2 Bi 2 . Here we demonstrate that the closely related SrMn 2 P 2 and CaMn 2 P 2 insulators instead exhibit first-order AFM transitions at T N = 53 and 70 K, respectively, where the heat capacity exhibits a latent heat at T N . The mechanism causing these first-order transitions remains to be explained, but its understanding may lead to the development of novel magnetic materials of technological interest.

First-ever deployment of a SiPM-on-tile calorimeter in a collider: a parasitic test with 200 GeV p p collisions at RHIC.

We describe the testing of a prototype SiPM-on-tile iron-scintillator calorimeter at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) during its 200 GeV p p run in 2024. The prototype, measuring 20 × 20 cm 2 and 24 radiation lengths in depth, was positioned in the STAR experimental hall, approximately 8 m from the interaction point and 65 cm from the beam line, covering a pseudorapidity range of about 3.1 < η < 3.4. By using the dark current of a reference SiPM as a radiation monitor, we estimate that the prototype was exposed to a fluence of about 10 10 1-MeV n eq /cm 2 . Channel-by-channel calibration was performed in a data-driven way with the signature from minimum-ionizing particles during beam-on conditions. AGeant4 detector simulation, with inputs from thePythia8 event generator, describes measurements of energy spectra and hit multiplicities reasonably well. These results mark the first deployment, commissioning, calibration, and long-term operation of a SiPM-on-tile calorimeter in a collider environment. This experimental campaign will guide detector designs and operational strategies for the ePIC detector at the future EIC, as well as other applications.

Simulating Dynamical Phases of Chiral p + i p Superconductors with a Trapped ion Magnet

Two-dimensional p + ip superconductors and superfluids are systems that feature chiral behavior emerging from the Cooper pairing of electrons or neutral fermionic atoms with nonzero angular momentum. Their realization has been a longstanding goal because they offer great potential utility for quantum computation and memory. However, they have so far eluded experimental observation both in solid-state systems as well as in ultracold quantum gases. Here, we propose to leverage the tremendous control offered by rotating two-dimensional trapped-ion crystals in a Penning trap to simulate the dynamical phases of two-dimensional p + ip superfluids. This is accomplished by mapping the presence or absence of a Cooper pair into an effective spin-1/2 system encoded in the ions’ electronic levels. We show how to infer the topological properties of the dynamical phases, and discuss the role of beyond mean-field corrections. More broadly, our work opens the door to use trapped-ion systems to explore exotic models of topological superconductivity and also paves the way to generate and manipulate skyrmionic spin textures in these platforms.

Isolating p- and n-Doped Fingers With Intrinsic Poly-Si in Passivated Interdigitated Back Contact Silicon Solar Cells

Polycrystalline silicon on silicon oxide (poly-Si/SiO x ) passivating contacts enable ultra high efficiency interdigitated back contact silicon solar cells. To prevent shunt between n- and p-type doped fingers, an insulating region is required between them. We evaluate the use of intrinsic poly Si for this isolation region. Interdigitated fingers were formed by plasma deposition of doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon through mechanically aligned shadow masks, on top of a full-area intrinsic amorphous silicon layer. High temperature annealing then crystallized the a-Si:H to poly Si and drove in the dopants. Two mechanisms were identified which cause contamination of the intrinsic poly Si gap during processing. During deposition of doped fingers, we show using secondary ion mass spectrometry and conductivity measurements that the intrinsic gap becomes contaminated by doped a-Si:H tails several nanometers thick to concentrations of ~10 20 cm -3 . Another source of contamination occurs during high-temperature annealing, where dopants desorb from doped regions and readsorb onto intrinsic a Si:H. Both pathways reduce the resistivity of the intrinsic gap from ~10 5 Ω·cm to ~10 -1 Ω·cm. We show that plasma etching of the a-Si:H surface before crystallizing with a capping layer can eliminate the contamination of the intrinsic poly-Si, maintaining a resistivity of ~10 5 Ω·cm. Lastly, this demonstrates masked plasma deposition as a dopant patterning method for Si solar cells.

sPHENIX heavy flavor jet tagging studies in p+p at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200~GeV$

Heavy-flavor jets, which are initiated from heavy quarks, are ideal probes for studying flavor dependent parton energy loss. We report on the performance of jet flavor tagging using two Neural Network Machine Learning (ML) models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model and an Attention-based Neural Network, in simulations of 200 GeV p + p collisions. The tagging performance of bottom quark initiated jets with both ML models surpasses that of the traditional cut-based method. Technical details, including sample and kinematic variable selections, the machine learning training and testing setup with parameter tuning, and outcome comparisons, will be discussed.

Measurements of jet yield and acoplanarity using semi-inclusive $\gamma_{\text{dir}}$+jet and $\pi^{0}$+jet distributions in $p$+$p$ and central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV by STAR

The STAR collaboration presents measurements of semi-inclusive distributions of charged jets recoiling from high transverse energy (E T ) direct photon and π 0 triggers in p+p and central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with jet resolution parameters R = 0.2 and 0.5. The large uncorrelated background in central Au+Au collisions is corrected using a mixed-event technique. This enables a jet measurement extending to low transverse momentum and large R with well-controlled systematic uncertainties. We present measurements of the jet R dependence of suppression, intra-jet broadening, and acoplanarity of π 0 +jet and γ dir +jet for trigger E T between 9–20 GeV.
