Geodetic satellite observations in North American (solution NA-9)

A new detailed geoidal map with claimed accuracies of plus or minus 2 meters (on land), based on gravimetric and satellite data, was presented. With the new geoid and the orthometric heights given, more reliable height constraints were calculated and applied. The basic purpose of this experiment was to compute the new solution NA9 by defining the origin of the system, from the point of view of error propagation, in the most favorable position applying inner constraints and imposing new weighted height constraints to all of the stations. The major differences with respect to formerly published adjustments are presented.

On the minimum intensity of the Na D2-5890 A line in sunspot umbra /Research note/.

The largest spot in the group Rome 5847 was observed on two successive days (July 6 and 7, 1970), and the data were reduced separately. Taking the instrumental parasitic light contamination (Wyller and Fay, 1972) into account, the value of the line-to-continuum intensity ratio is found to be 0.033 plus or minus 0.05 by two methods.

Wavelengths and levels of the Na I isoelectronic sequence from K IX through Mn XV

The seven spectra K IX through Mn XV have been analyzed and the series limits determined. We present the adopted wavelengths and the derived energy levels and term splittings. The highly ionized atoms were produced in a spark source and recorded mainly on a 3 m grazing incidence spectrograph. Many new lines have been identified and many previously given wavelengths have been revised. All wavelengths have been examined for consistency by least-squares-fitting procedures and other tests. These procedures indicated misidentified lines and incorrect wavelengths which we corrected when possible. A discussion of the errors is given.

Effect of microstructure on Na/+/ diffusion in beta alumina

The effect of microstructural features, such as grain size and orientation, on sodium ion diffusion in polycrystalline beta alumina is investigated; the ionic solid is suitable for use in high-energy and power density batteries. Two types of hot-pressed polycrystalline samples are studied, one with grains highly oriented in the direction normal to the pressing direction, the other with significantly less preferred orientation normal to the pressing direction. Results of the experimental assessments indicate that grain size and diffusion path tortuosity have little effect on diffusion kinetics, while grain boundary type and grain aspect ratio are important factors in determining the diffusion rate.

Fuel economy and exhaust emissions characteristics of diesel vehicles: Test results of a prototype Fiat 131 NA 2.4 liter automobile

The vehicle was tested on a chassis dynamometer over selected drive cycles and steady-state conditions. Two fuels were used, a U.S. no. 2 diesel and a European diesel fuel. The vehicle was tested with retarded timing and with and without an oxidation catalyst. Particulate emission rates were calculated from dilution tunnel measurements and large volume particulate samples were collected for biological and chemical analysis. It was determined that while the catalyst was generally effective in reducing hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide levels, it was also a factor in increasing particulate emissions. Increased particulate emission rates were particularly evident when the vehicle was operated on the European fuel which has a high sulfur content.

Role of molybdenum in the Na sub 2SO sub 4 induced corrosion of superalloys at high temperatures

Sodium sulfate induced corrosion of a molybdenum containing nickel-base superalloy, Udimet 700, was studied in laboratory furnace tests and in a high velocity (Mach 0.3) burner rig. The effect of SO2 content in the atmosphere on the corrosion behavior in the laboratory furnace tests was determined. Catastrophic corrosion occurs only when the melt contains MoO3 in addition to Na2SO4 and Na2MoO4. The conditions under which catastrophic corrosion occurs are identified and a mechanism is described to explain the catastrophic corrosion.

Multitasking and microtasking experience on the NA S Cray-2 and ACF Cray X-MP

The fast Fourier transform (FFT) kernel of the NAS benchmark program has been utilized to experiment with the multitasking library on the Cray-2 and Cray X-MP/48, and microtasking directives on the Cray X-MP. Some performance figures are shown, and the state of multitasking software is described.

NiF2 Cathodes For Rechargeable Na Batteries

Use of NiF2 cathodes in medium-to-high-temperature rechargeable sodium batteries increases energy and power densities by 25 to 30 percent without detracting from potential advantage of safety this type of sodium battery offers over sodium batteries having sulfur cathodes. High-energy-density sodium batteries with metal fluoride cathodes used in electric vehicles and for leveling loads on powerlines.

K-shell Photoionization of Na-like to Cl-like Ions of Mg, Si, S, Ar, and Ca

We present R-matrix calculations of photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections across the K edge of Mg, Si, S, Ar, and Ca ions with more than 10 electrons. The calculations include the effects of radiative and Auger damping by means of an optical potential. The wave functions are constructed from single-electron. orbital bases obtained using a Thomas-Fermi-Dirac statistical model potential. Configuration interaction is considered among all states up to n = 3. The damping processes affect the resonances converging to the K-thresholds causing them to display symmetric profiles of constant width that smear the otherwise sharp edge at the photoionization threshold. These data are important for the modeling of features found in photoionized plasmas.
