Leveraging High-Level Synthesis to Migrate Motor Control Algorithms From Microcontroller to FPGA

As motor control algorithms become increasingly complex, traditional microcontroller-based implementations are reaching computational limits that prevent the controller from operating at the required speed. This paper presents a novel workflow leveraging High-Level Synthesis (HLS) to migrate motor control algorithms from a microcontroller implementation to a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation. The proposed approach utilizes the free Vitis HLS software to automatically convert Embedded Coder-generated C code from a Simulink model into Hardware Description Language (HDL) code suitable for FPGA deployment.

Tracking radar studies of bird migration

The application of tracking radar for determining the flight paths of migratory birds is discussed. The effects produced by various meteorological parameters are described. Samples of radar scope presentations obtained during tracking studies are presented. The characteristics of the radars and their limitations are examined.

The influence of magnetic total intensity and inclination on directions preferred by migrating European robins (Erithacus rubecula)

The directional orientation of migratory European robins in relation to magnetic cues is analyzed. Major efforts were made to determine what information the birds derive from the fields. It was determined that magnetic fields provide: (1) field intensity which determines whether the magnetic field can be used for orientation, (2) a means by which axial direction may be perceived, and (3) a means by which the bird can find the north direction. The north direction is sensed from the angle between gravity and the magnetic field.

Telemetry link for an automatic salmon migration monitor

The antenna and transmitter described in this report were designed for integration into the remote acoustic assessment system for detection of sockeye salmon in the Bristol Bay region of the Bering Sea. The assessment system configuration consists of an upward directed sonar buoy anchored 150 ft below the surface and attached by cable to a spar buoy tethered some 300 ft laterally. The spar buoy contains a telemetry transmitter, power supply, data processing electronics, an antenna and a beacon light.

Toxicologic evaluation of the migration of a plasticizer, DI (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) from vinyl plastics

The intravenous administration of DEHP solubilized by means of a number of different detergents leads to respiratory distress and death in rats. At autopsy the lungs are grossly enlarged, edamatous, and hemorrhagic. Light and electron microscopic evaluation of the lungs indicate engorgement of the interalveolar septa with edema fluid and polymorphonuclear leucocytes, degranulation of the leukocytes, and progessive destruction of the endothelial and epithelial cells. Consistent with the conclusion that solubilized DEHP results in a syndrome of "shock lung" is the associated massive fall in arterial blood pressure and the prevention of the lung pathology by pretreatment with pharmacologic doses of an antiinflammatory steroid, methylprednisolone. Evidence is also presented that suggests that the DEHP inadvertently administered to humans during transfusions is also in a solubilized state in the plasma.
