Rare Earth Engineering in R Mn 6 Sn 6 ( R = Gd–Tm, Lu) Topological Kagome Magnets

Exploration of the topological quantum materials with electron correlation is at the frontier of physics, as the strong interaction may give rise to new topological phases and transitions. Here we report that a family of kagome magnets RMn 6 Sn 6 manifest the quantum transport properties analogical to those in the quantum-limit Chern magnet TbMn 6 Sn 6 . The topological transport in the family, including quantum oscillations with nontrivial Berry phase and large anomalous Hall effect arising from Berry curvature field, points to the existence of Chern gapped Dirac fermions. Furthermore, our observation demonstrates a close relationship between rare-earth magnetism and topological electron structure, indicating the rare-earth elements can effectively engineer the Chern quantum phase in kagome magnets.

Spin-orbit coupling controlled ground states in the double perovskite iridates $\textit{A}_2\textit{B}$IrO$_6$ ($\textit{A}$ = Ba, Sr; $\textit{B}$ = Lu, Sc)

Iridates with the 5$d^4$ electronic configuration have attracted recent interest due to reports of magnetically ordered ground states despite longstanding expectations that their strong spin-orbit coupling would generate a $\textit{J}$ = 0 electronic ground state for each Ir 5+ ion. The major focus of prior research has been on the double perovskite iridates Ba 2 YIrO 6 and Sr 2 YIrO 6 , where the nature of the ground states (i.e., ordered vs nonmagnetic) is still controversial. Here, in this work, we present neutron powder diffraction, high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS), resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), magnetic susceptibility, and muon spin relaxation data on the related double perovskite iridates Ba 2 LuIrO 6 , Sr 2 LuIrO 6 , Ba 2 ScIrO 6 , and Sr 2 ScIrO 6 that enable us to gain a general understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties for this family of materials. Our HERFD-XAS and RIXS measurements establish $\textit{J}$ = 0 electronic ground states for the Ir 5+ ions in all cases, with similar values for Hund's coupling $J_H$ and the spin-orbit coupling constant $λ_{\text{SOC}}$. Our bulk susceptibility and muon spin relaxation data find no evidence for long-range magnetic order or spin freezing, but they do exhibit weak magnetic signals that are consistent with extrinsic local moments. Our results indicate that the large $λ_{\text{SOC}}$ is the key driving force behind the electronic and magnetic ground states realized in the $5d^4$ double perovskite iridates, which agrees well with conventional wisdom.

Individual and Simultaneous Imaging of ⁹⁹mTc and ¹⁷⁷Lu With a Preclinical Broad Energy-Spectrum CZT-Based SPECT

Radiopharmaceutical therapy has demonstrated a high efficacy in the treatment of various tumor types. One of the radionuclides already used in the clinic is 177Lu, a beta emitter that also emits several photons imageable with SPECT. Quantitative imaging of 177Lu is critical for developing new radiopharmaceuticals. Energy resolution is an important factor when imaging multiple photon emissions. Solid-state detectors offer a superior performance over scintillators, that are commonly used in commercially-available preclinical SPECT scanners. This study demonstrates the feasibility of 99m Tc and 177Lu quantitative imaging in mouse phantoms, individually and simultaneously, with a SPECT prototype built with four CdZnTe (CZT) detector heads and a custom-designed and energy-optimized parallel-hole tungsten collimator. With a custom implementation of the one-step late (OSL) image reconstruction algorithm, the system is capable of imaging energies from ~70 keV to 250 keV. Above 250 keV, images were significantly affected by septal penetration, consistent with the collimator design. A recovery coefficient within 25% was obtained for activities as low as 2 kBq/mL for 99m Tc and 45% for 177Lu. Compared to a commercial NaI-based preclinical SPECT (VECTor4/CT), our prototype showed a superior energy resolution (< 5% at 140 keV), a similar uniformity with a high-compact design.

Ultra spin liquid in Lu 3 Cu 2 Sb 3 O 14

Abstract We analyze recent measurements of C / T , specific heat C divided by temperature T , of a recently observed ultra spin liquid. The measurements are carried out in magnetic fields on the triangular lattice compound . We show that the obtained heat capacity formed by the ultra spin liquid as a function of temperature T vs. magnetic field B behaves very similar to the electronic specific heat of the HF metal and the quantum magnet . We demonstrate that the effective mass of spinon exhibits the universal scaling coinciding with scaling observed in heavy-fermion (HF) metals and in . Based on these observations we conclude that a strongly correlated spin liquid determines the thermodynamic properties of the ultra spin liquid of .

Magnetic properties of Lu and Y doped Ce-Fe-B magnets

The growing demand for Nd2Fe14B magnets is exacerbating the current critical materials shortage. To reduce the amount of critical material in Nd2Fe14B magnets, chemical substitutions have been used and shown to improve the magnetic behavior, such as the Curie Temperature TC, anisotropy field Ha, and saturation magnetization MS.

GCAM-Demeter LU dataset

The dataset includes the projected global gridded land cover (excluding the Antarctic) for the period of 2015-2100 at 0.05-degree resolution and 5-year time step under fifteen SSP-RCP scenarios driven by five GCMs (i.e., gfdl, hadgem, ipsl, miroc, and noresm), using the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) and a geospatial downscaling model (Demeter). The data has been stored in self-describing NetCDF format. The dataset also includes the mean and standard deviation of the results driven by the five GCMs. More specifically, the data in each year includes grid-explicit fraction (in percent) of each of the 32 plant functional types that are widely used in current Earth system models. The NetCDF files are named as “GCAM_Demeter_LU_SSP_RCP_Model_Year.nc”, where “SSP” and “RCP” denote the SSP and RCP scenarios, including 'ssp1_rcp26', 'ssp1_rcp45', 'ssp1_rcp60', 'ssp2_rcp26', 'ssp2_rcp45', 'ssp2_rcp60', 'ssp3_rcp45', 'ssp3_rcp60', 'ssp4_rcp26', 'ssp4_rcp45', 'ssp4_rcp60', 'ssp5_rcp26', 'ssp5_rcp45', 'ssp5_rcp60', and 'ssp5_rcp85'. “Year” denotes the year of the land use data, and “GCM” denotes the source driving forcing data from five global climate models (gfdl, hadgem, ipsl, miroc, and noresm), or the mean (“modelmean”) and the standard deviation (“modelstd”) of the results from the five GCMs.

An LU implicity scheme for high speed inlet analysis

A numerical method is developed to analyze the inviscid flowfield of a high speed inlet by the solution of the Euler equations. The lower-upper implicit scheme in conjunction with adaptive dissipation proves to be an efficient and robust nonoscillatory shock capturing technique for high Mach number flows as well as for transonic flows.

Numerical study of chemically reacting flows using an LU scheme

A new computational fluid dynamic code has been developed for the study of mixing and chemical reactions in the flow fields of ramjets and scramjets. The code employs an implicit finite volume, lower-upper symmetric successive overrelaxation scheme for solving the complete two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and species transport equations in a fully-coupled and very efficient manner. The combustion processes are modeled by an 8-species, 14-step finite rate chemistry model whereas turbulence is simulated by a Baldwin-Lomax algebraic model. The validity of the code is demonstrated by comparing the numerical calculations with both experimental data and previous calculations of a cold flow helium injection into a straight channel and premixed hydrogen-air reacting flows in a ramped duct. The code is then used to calculate the mixing and chemical reactions of a hydrogen jet transversely injected into a supersonic airstream. Results are presented describing the flow field, the recirculation regions in front and behind the injector, and the chemical reactions.

Efficient real gas Navier-Stokes computations of high speed flows using an LU scheme

An efficient method to account for the chemically frozen thermodynamic and transport properties of air in three dimensional Navier-Stokes calculations was demonstrated. This approach uses an explicitly specified equation of state (EOS) so that the fluid pressure, temperature and transport properties are directly related to the flow variables. Since the pressure is explicitly known as a general function of the flow variables no assumptions are made regarding the pressure derivatives in the construction of the flux Jacobians. The method is efficient since no sub-iterations are required to deduce the pressure and temperature from the flux variables and allows different equations of state to be easily supplied to the code. The flexibility of the EOS approach is demonstrated by implementing a high order TVD upwinding scheme based upon flux differencing and Van Leer's flux vector splitting. The EOS approach is demonstrated by computing the hypersonic flow through the corner region of two mutually perpendicular flat plates and through a simplified model of a scramjet module gap-seal configuration.
