Nuclear gamma rays from Li-7 in the galactic cosmic radiation.

The observation of a gamma-ray line feature from the direction of the galactic center by Johnson, Harnden, and Haymes is interpreted as the 478-keV nuclear de-excitation of low-energy Li-7 cosmic rays as they inelastically scatter from the interstellar gas. The prediction of an associated line at 432 keV is proposed as a definitive test of this idea.

Reaction Li-6/p, pt/ at 590 MeV.

A lithium target enriched to 95.6 per cent of Li-6 and 0.685 cm thick was bombarded in the 590-MeV proton beam of a synchrocyclotron. Coincident events were detected in a double telescope arrangement. The characteristics of the unobserved three-nucleon residual system calculated for each event include the missing energy, the longitudinal recoil, and the transverse recoil. The cross-section data obtained indicate that zero recoil momentum for the unobserved three-nucleon recoil system is the most likely situation.

The relative abundance of the isotopes of Li, Be and B and the age of cosmic rays

Using a balloon borne double dE/dx total energy telescope, we have determined the isotopic composition of cosmic ray Li, Be and B nuclei in the energy range 100-250 MeV/nuc. The measured mass resolution for these nuclei is about 0.3 AMU. The observed isotopic composition is in agreement with that predicted on the basis of interstellar fragmentation with the exception of a deficiency of Be-10. If the low abundance of Be-10 is attributed to the decay of this radioactive isotope, we obtain a mean cosmic ray lifetime of 3.4 (plus 3.4 or minus 1.3) m.y.

The isotopic composition of galactic cosmic ray Li, Be, and B

New measurements are reported of the isotopes of cosmic-ray Li, Be, and B and of the elements C, N, and O, with cosmic ray telescopes on board the IMP-7 and IMP-8 satellites during 1973-74 in the energy range 35-210 MeV/nucleon. High mass resolution and stability together with a set of data more extensive than in previous experiments lead to a clear isotopic separation. The measured isotopic and chemical abundances provide a stringent test for models of interstellar propagation and solar modulation. We find not only that for a steady state propagation and solar modulation model all light isotopes and medium element abundances are explained by 5 g/sq cm average pathlengths, as was earlier found from element analysis, but that also these results, taken along with our Be-10 measurements, indicate a longer lifetime for cosmic rays than predicted by the usual assumption of an average interstellar density of 1 to 3 atoms/cu cm.

Dynamic polarizabilities of metastable 2/1,3S/ excited states of He and Li/+/, with rigorous upper and lower bounds

Methods previously described for calculating rigorous upper and lower bounds to dynamic dipole polarizabilities are applied to the metastable 2(1S) and 2(2S) excited states of He and Li(+), using highly correlated variational trial functions. For each of these species, the bounds rigorously establish the values of the frequency-dependent dipole polarizability to within about 1% and appear to represent the first determination of this property at frequencies above the first excitation threshold.

Background of a shielded Ge(Li) spectrometer at balloon altitudes

The background data obtained from an actively shielded Ge(Li) spectrometer flown on a balloon were analyzed and a preliminary model was developed to explain background features including the intensity and time profile of line emission. These features can be explained by a combination of secondary radiation originating in the CsI shield and atmospheric secondary radiation leaking through it.

Characteristics of Li-SOCl2 cells

A general discussion of the characteristics of Li-SOC12 cells is presented. Three different shaped cells were selected for study; prismatic, cylindrical, and disc. The characteristics of the cells were obtained through nondestructive and destructive testing which are discussed. Graphs are presented which represent the various parameters investigated. Workshop participant comments and questions are also included.

Electron-impact excitation of Li II in the distorted-wave approximation

The 1(1)S yields 2(3)P electron-impact-excitation cross section for Li II is calculated in the distorted-wave approximation. Two forms of the distorted-wave method are examined; in the first form both the initial and final wave functions are distorted, while in the second form only the initial wave function is distorted. In both forms a partial-wave expansion of the scattered amplitude is made, and exchange is incorporated in a consistent manner. The effects of including more than one configuration in the target-state wave function are also examined. For incident energies greater than 90 eV, distorted-wave calculations agree moderately well with recent experimental and theoretical results.

New approach to hyperfine structure - Application to the Li ground state

Global identities for delta functions, given by Hiller, Sucher and Feinberg (HSF) are applied to the calculation of the hyperfine structure (HFS) of the ground state of Li. It is shown that use of the HSF identity together with configuration interaction type wavefunctions can yield values of the HFS constant f which are comparable in accuracy to that obtained by Larsson with a 100-term Hylleraas-type wavefunction. The implications of this result for HFS calculations for atoms with many electrons are discussed.

Sounding-rocket experiment to study the diffuse soft X-ray background using a Si(Li) detector

Soft X-ray background in the energy range 0.4 to 10 keV was studied. A payload was developed which uses a wide angle, windowless, cooled, Si(Li) semiconductor detector system. With a resolution of less than 150 eV between 0.3 and 2.0 keV, the system is sensitive to an emission equivalent width of about 10 eV. Carbon and oxygen line emission were detected from the vicinity of the North Galactic Pole and the North Polar Spur.

Transmission electron microscopy characterization of microstructural features of Al-Li-Cu alloys

A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examination of aluminum-lithium-copper alloys was conducted. The principal purpose is to characterize the nature, size, and distribution of stringer particles which result from the powder metallurgy (P/M) processing of these alloys. Microstructural features associated with the stringer particles are reported that help explain the stress corrosion susceptibility of the powder metallurgy-processed Al-Li-Cu alloys. In addition, matrix precipitation events are documented for a variety of heat treatments and process variations. Hot rolling is observed to significant alter the nature of matrix precipitation, and the observations are correlated with concomitant mechanical property variations.

Inclusive angular distribution of alpha and Li fragments produced in the Fe-C and Fe-Pb collisions at 1.88 GeV/u

The LS (laboratory system) emission angles theta for 2188 and 298 Li fragments, produced inclusively in relativistic Fe-C and Fe-Pb collisions, have been measured in reference to incident Fe-ion beam tracks nearby in nuclear emulsion. An empirical differential frequency formula, dN(cot theta) = exp (a + b cot theta)d(cot theta) is obtained with the constant b approx. = -0.026 at 1.88 GeV/u, which seems to be independent on the kinds of target nucleus as well as on the kinds of projectile fragments.

Magnetic fields in the radiative interior of stars. I Thermal shadows and forced convection. II - Forced convection and the Li-7 abundance

A theoretical model is developed for thermal shadows of magnetic inhomogeneities and their effects in the radiative cores of stars such as the sun. It is shown that the shadows cause a slight decrease of gas pressure, thereby lowering the opacity and raising the effective heat transport. The shadows produced by the inhomogeneities induce thermal gradients and therefore forced convection. If the field strength is at least 400,000 gauss partial Li-7 depletion will occur due to destruction in convection-dominated thermonuclear reactions. The scale of the field would need to be 30,000 km.

Thermal analysis of prismatic Li-SOCl2 primary cells

A thermally efficient design for prismatic Li-SOCl2 primary cells is proposed, for application to NASA missions requiring overall power capacities of 20-22 Ah. Thermal resistances of 20 Ah capacity cells were calculated along paths parallel to and normal to the electrodes. Stacking six cells in series to achieve the required 17-28 V potential, it is found that safe operation at C/5 rates (4 A discharge) is possible, maintaining the internal cell temperature below 80 C. Higher discharge rates than C/5 are possible by decreasing the total thermal resistance via providing free spaces between cells.

Elastomeric binders for Li-SOCl2 cell carbon electrodes

Nonoptimized elastomer bonded carbon electrodes made with 100-percent compressed Gulf Acetylene Black have demonstrated performance comparable to that of optimized Teflon bonded carbon electrodes, made from the same carbon, when tested at 1-10 mA/sq cm, at 24 and -26 C. The enhanced performance of elastomer bonded carbon electrodes appears to be due to the more uniform utilization of the carbon electrode to store insoluble discharge products, as compared to Teflon bonded carbon electrodes. With even minimal optimization of elastomer bonded carbon electrodes, significant improvement in Li-SOCl2 cell performance can be expected.

Subtropical middle atmosphere dynamics observed by the Chung Li radar

The Chung Li Radar (24.91 N; 121.24 E) has been operating since 1986. A five beam observational configuration was used on a regular basis to study the various dynamics processes in the atmosphere-lower stratosphere height region. Due to its geographical location, the annual Typhoon and Mei-Yu seasons provide good opportunities to study the various interesting dynamic processes such as instabilities, generation of gravity waves, wave mean field interaction, etc. Three dimensional air motions due to these fronts are presented. Special cases of gravity wave generation, propagation and their effects on the turbulent layers are discussed.
