Time dependent chlorination of CeO 2 , La 2 O 3 and Nd 2 O 3 by ZrCl 4 dissolved in eutectic LiCl–KCl

Partial chlorination of CeO 2 , La 2 O 3 , and Nd 2 O 3 was achieved using ZrCl 4 dissolved in molten LiCl-KCl at 450°C over a period of 4-5 hr. ZrCl 4 was pre-volatilized into an argon stream to maintain a constant vapor pressure for equilibration with the salt. This approach was effective at maintaining the ZrCl 4 concentration at the solubility limit of 1.3 mol% in the molten salt throughout the duration of two of the chlorination experiments and within about 60% of the solubility limit in the third experiment. Based on the analysis of salt samples, fractional conversion after four hours of reaction for CeO 2 , and five hours for La 2 O 3 , and Nd 2 O 3 were calculated to be 0.97, 0.28, and 0.65 respectively. Assuming a shrinking core diffusion-limited model, the diffusivity of ZrCl 4 through the hypothesized ZrO 2 layer was calculated for the chlorination of CeO 2 , La 2 O 3 , and Nd 2 O 3 were 1.76 x 10 -10 cm 2 /sec, 7.85 x 10 -12 cm 2 /sec, and 7.42 x 10 -12 cm 2 /sec, respectively. Given the extremely low values calculated for diffusivity, it was concluded that the process is chemical reaction rate limited and that a complete reaction of each rare earth oxide could be achieved. Furthermore, a chemically controlled shrinking core model was shown to also fit the experimental data closely.

Mechanistic in situ insights into the formation, structural and catalytic aspects of the La 2 NiO 4 intermediate phase in the dry reforming of methane over Ni-based perovskite catalysts

In this work, we focus on the stability and bulk/surface structural properties of the Ruddlesden-Popper phase La 2 NiO 4 and their consequences for dry reforming of methane (DRM) activity. Fuelled by the appearance as a crucial intermediate during in situ decomposition of highly DRM-active LaNiO3 perovskite structures, we show that La 2 NiO 4 can be equally in situ decomposed into a Ni/La 2 O 3 phase offering CO 2 capture and release necessary for DRM activity, albeit at much higher temperatures compared to LaNiO 3 . Decomposition in hydrogen also leads to an active Ni/La 2 O 3 phase. In situ X-ray diffraction during DRM operation reveals considerable coking and encapsulation of exsolved Ni, yielding much smaller Ni crystallites compared to on LaNiO 3 , where coking is virtually absent. Additionally, generalizing the importance of intermediate Ruddlesden-Popper phases, the in situ decomposition of La-based perovskite structures yields several obstacles due to the high stability of both the parent perovskite and the Ruddlesden-Popper structures and the occurrence of parasitic structures.

Unraveling the Synergistic effects of La and Al co-doping on Ni/Co-free P2-type Na 0.67 Mn 0.67 Fe 0.33 O 2 layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

Recent developments in high-performance cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) tend to mitigate use of critical Ni and Co active species to satisfy sustainability. P2-type layered oxide cathodes based on Mn and Fe promise high capacity, sustainability, and low cost on account of the abundance and multiple redox characteristics of Mn and Fe. However, their commercialization is still challenged due to poor cycling stability caused by phase changes emanating from inherent Jahn-Teller distortions. Herein, we propose a novel strategy of trivalent La and Al co-doping to alleviate the drawbacks, innovating a new cathode of Na 0.67 Mn 0.62 Al 0.05 Fe 0.31 La 0.02 O 2 (AlLa). The co-doped cathode delivers an impressive capacity of 128.7 mAh/g at 1C and 106.5 mAh/g at high rate of 5C with a good capacity retention of 85% after 100 cycles. These are superior to the unmodified material, whose specific capacity was 118.6 mAh/g at 1C and 61.1 mAh/g at 5C with a retention of only 65% after 100 cycles. The synergistic contribution from La and Al associated with their improved oxygen bonding, pillaring, and local electronic structural modification stemming from rigid Lasingle bondO and Alsingle bondO bonding resulted in the observed structural and electrochemical improvement. Overall, this research offers novel strategies for designing high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Pd and octahedra do not get along: Square planar [PdS 4 ] units in non-centrosymmetric La 6 PdSi 2 S 14

Non-linear optical (NLO) materials require a balance of high second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal and laser damage threshold (LDT), as well as phase matchable behavior. Herein, we report a new member of the (RE) 6 (TM) x (Tt) 2 Q 14 family of compounds, La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 , which, unlike all other reported TM analogues crystallizing in hexagonal P6 3 space group, crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic P2 1 space group. The crystal structure contains chains of edge-sharing distorted square planar [PdS 4 ] units. The square-planar coordination of Pd in La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 exhibits remarkable NLO properties with high SHG (3.7 × AgGaS 2 ) and LDT (3 × AgGaS 2 ) values as well as phase matchability. This shows the promise of novel materials with distorted structural motifs for enhanced NLO properties. Further, upon formation of bimetallic chiral sulfides containing both Cu and Pd, Cu occupies the opposite faces of the octahedra forming [CuS 3 ] units while Pd can be stabilized in the center of PdS 6 octahedra in the hexagonal P6 3 crystal structure of La 6 Pd 0.5 CuSi 2 S 14 . This suggests that it is possible to form mixed metal systems which could further enhance NLO properties by incorporation of additional structural distortions.

The orbital effect on the anomalous magnetism and evolution in La $x$ Y 1-$x$ VO 3 (0 ≤ $x$ ≤ 0.2) single crystals

The orbital effect on the anomalous magnetism and evolution of single crystals with low La doping, La $x$ Y 1-$x$ VO 3 ($x$ = 0, 0.1, and 0.2), has been studied using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, specific heat, magnetization, and Raman-scattering techniques. It is found that substituting Y 3+ by La 3+ increases the degeneracy of the $yz/zx$ orbitals and decreases the Jahn-Teller distortion. These weakens the G-type (antiphase ordering along the c axis) orbital ordering phase. Meanwhile, the substituting decreases the magnetism entropy, indicating the shrinking of the t 2g and e g orbital hybridization, eventually destabilizing the C-type (in-phase ordering along the c axis) antiferromagnetic ordering phase. In addition, the mechanism for the shrinking of the diamagnetism with increasing $x$ is analyzed. In conclusion, it may attribute to the competition between the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky–Moriya interaction and the single-ion anisotropy.

Chemical durability and surface alteration of lanthanide zirconates (A 2 Zr 2 O 7 : A = La-Yb)

Chemical durability of lanthanide zirconates (A 2 Zr 2 O 7 ) (A = La-Yb) under near-field environments is important for evaluating their application as potential nuclear waste forms. In this work, A 2 Zr 2 O 7 (A = La-Yb) are synthesized by spark plasma sintering with controlled microstructure and their chemical durability are evaluated in a nitric acid solution (pH = 1). Scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis reveals an amorphous passivation film either enriched with Zr or lanthanide. The complex chemistry of the passivation films can be correlated with a transition in corrosion mechanisms from a preferential release of lanthanide in La 2 Zr 2 O 7 to a preferential release of Zr in Er 2 Zr 2 O 7 and Yb 2 Zr 2 O 7 . These results suggest a dominant mechanism of incongruent dissolution and surface reorganization for the formation of passivation films. Strong correlations are identified between the leaching rates and cation ionic size, ionic potential, electronegativity differences between A-site cation and Zr, and bonding valence sum of oxygen, suggesting important impacts of structural and bonding characteristics in controlling chemical durability of lanthanide zirconates.

Unusual superparamagnetic behavior in bulk Ba 0.198 La 0.784 Ti 0.096 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ

Here, we report the observation of superparamgnetic behavior induced by the substitution La 3+ by Ba 2+ at A-sites and Fe +3 by Ti 4+ at B-sites. Ba 0.198 La 0.784 Ti 0.096 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ was synthesized via solid state reaction. The Rietveld refinements revealed an orthorhombic (Pbnm). The low-mag STEM results showed that the particles were found to exhibit square like shape and formed in single crystal with high degree of crystallinity. The particle size ranges of 50 300 nm. Element mapping demonstrates a complementary distribution between Ba and La, while homogenous distribution is found for Fe and O. The optical band gap determined from UV-vis analysis is equal to 1.93 eV which is smaller than the reported one for LaFeO 3 and BaTiO 3 . The hysteresis loops at 300 K and 10 K show superparamagnetic behavior, which deviate extremely from the antiferromagnetic nature of LaFeO 3 perovskite. The temperature dependent magnetization demonstrates that the material kept a net magnetization of 12.29 (emu/g) at very low temperature.

Thermally Driven Interfacial Degradation between Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 Electrolyte and LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 Cathode

Solid-state batteries offer higher energy density and enhanced safety compared to the present lithium-ion batteries using liquid electrolytes. A challenge to implement them is the high resistances, especially at the solid electrolyte interface with the cathode. Sintering at elevated temperature is needed in order to get good contact between the ceramic solid electrolyte and oxide cathodes and thus to reduce contact resistances. Many solid electrolyte and cathode materials react to form secondary phases. It is necessary to find out which phases arise as a result of interface sintering and evaluate their effect on electrochemical properties. Herein, we assessed the interfacial reactions between LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC622) and Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) as a function of temperature in air. We prepared model systems by depositing thin-film NMC622 cathode layers on LLZO pellets. The thin-film cathode approach enabled us to use interface-sensitive techniques such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the near-edge as well as the extended regimes and identify the onset of detrimental reactions. We found that the Ni and Co chemical environments change already at moderate temperatures, on-setting from 500 °C and becoming especially prominent at 700 °C. By analyzing spectroscopy results along with X-ray diffraction, we identified Li 2 CO 3 , La 2 Zr 2 O 7 , and La(Ni,Co)O 3 as the secondary phases that formed at 700 °C. The interfacial resistance for Li transfer, measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, increases significantly upon the onset and evolution of the detected interface chemistry. Our findings suggest that limiting the bonding temperature and avoiding CO 2 in the sintering environment can help to remedy the interfacial degradation.

Ln 10 S 14 O (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) Oxysulfides: A Series of Direct n-Type Semiconductors

Lanthanoid oxysulfides are promising materials for technological applications owing to their magnetic, photoluminescent, catalytic, and optoelectronic properties. In this work, we report the solid-state synthesis and structural characterization of Ln 10 S 14 O (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) oxysulfides. Then, we present a thorough discussion on their electronic and photophysical properties. Through Tauc plot analysis and the derivation of the absorption spectrum fitting method (DASF), we determine that all oxysulfides have direct band gaps with energies of 2.84 eV (La), 2.02 eV (Ce), 2.56 eV (Pr), 2.64 eV (Nd), and 2.41 eV (Sm). Furthermore, surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) shows photovoltage (ΔCPD) values of –0.4 to –1.1 V for La-, Pr-, Nd-, and Sm-containing compounds when illuminated near the optical band gap, indicating that these oxysulfides are n-type semiconductors, which is consistent with Mott–Schottky analysis. Photovoltages under sub-band gap illumination energy and photovoltage decay data suggest mid-band gap states possibly arising from the lanthanoid 4f orbitals and/or defects within the crystal structure or at the particle surfaces. These photophysical properties suggest possible applications of the oxysulfides in photoelectrochemical and photovoltaic energy conversion.

Role of Pairwise Reactions on the Synthesis of Li 0.3 La 0.57 TiO 3 and the Resulting Structure–Property Correlations

The performance of single-ion conductors is highly sensitive to the material’s defect chemistry. Tuning these defects is limited for solid-state reactions as they occur at particle–particle interfaces, which provide a complex evolving energy landscape for atomic rearrangement and product formation. In this report, we investigate the (1) order of addition and (2) lithium precursor decomposition temperature and their effect on the synthesis and grain boundary conductivity of the perovskite lithium lanthanum titanium oxide (LLTO). We use an intimately mixed sol–gel, a solid-state reaction of Li precursor + La 2 O 3 + TiO 2 , and Li precursor + amorphous La 0.57 TiO x as different chemical routes to change the way in which the elements are brought together. The results show that the perovskite can accommodate a wide range of Li deficiencies (upward of 50%) while maintaining the tetragonal LLTO structure, indicating that X-ray diffraction (XRD) is insufficient to fully characterize the chemical nature of the product (i.e., Li-deficient LLTO may behave differently than stoichiometric LLTO). Variations in the relative intensities of different reflections in XRD suggest variations in the La ordering within the crystal structure between synthesis methods. Furthermore, the choice of the precursor and the order of addition of the reactants lower the time required to form a pure phase. Density functional theory calculations of the formation energy of possible reaction intermediates support the hypothesis that a greater thermodynamic driving force to form LLTO leads to a greater LLTO yield. Here, the retention of lithium is correlated with the thermal decomposition temperature of the Li precursor and the starting material mixing strategy. Taking the results together suggests that cations that share a site with Li should be mixed early to avoid ordering. Such cation ordering inhibits Li motion, leading to higher Li ion resistance.

Rare Earth Nitrate Hybrid Double Perovskites [Me 4 N] 2 [MLn(NO 3 ) 6 ] (M = Na–Cs; Ln = La–Gd, ex. Pm)

An exploration of the synthetic and structural phase space of rare earth hybrid double perovskites A 2 B'BX 6 (A = organocation, B' = M + , B = M 3+ , X = molecular bridging anion) that include X = NO 3 – and B' = alkali metal is reported, complementing earlier studies of the [Me 4 N] 2 [KB(NO 3 ) 6 ] (B = Am, Cm, La–Nd, Sm–Lu, Y) (Me 4 N = (CH 3 ) 4 N + ) compounds. In the present efforts, the synthetic phase space of these systems is explored by varying the identity of the alkali metal ion at the B'-site. Herein, we report three new series of the form [Me 4 N] 2 [B'B(NO 3 ) 6 ] (B = La–Nd, Sm–Gd; B' = Na, Rb, Cs). The early members of the Na-series crystallize in the trigonal space group R3̅ from La to Nd where a phase transition occurs in the phase between 273 and 300 K, going from R3̅ to the high-symmetry, cubic space group Fm3̅m. The preceding trigonal members of the Na-series also undergo phase transitions to cubic symmetry at temperatures above 300 K, establishing a decreasing trend in the phase-transition temperature. The remainder of the Na-series, as well as the Rb- and Cs-series, all crystallize in Fm3̅m at 300 K. The temperature-dependent phase behavior of the synthesized phases is studied via variable-temperature spectroscopic methods and high-resolution powder X-ray diffractometry. All phases were characterized via single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopic methods. These results demonstrate the versatility of the perovskite structure type to include rare earth ions, nitrate ions, and a suite of alkali metal ions and serve as a foundation for the design of functional rare earth hybrid double perovskite materials such as those possessing useful multiferroic, optical, and magnetic properties.

Threshold Ionization Spectroscopy and Theoretical Calculations of LnO (Ln = La and Ce)

Mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy was used to measure the vibronic spectra of LnO (Ln = La and Ce). Single-reference coupled cluster and relativistic multireference configuration calculations were carried out to compare with the measured vibronic energies. The spectrum of LaO displays a single vibronic band system, while that of CeO shows multiple ones. The ionization energies of LaO and CeO are measured as 5.2446 (6) and 5.3332(6) eV, respectively, which are a hundredfold improvement over the literature values. The vibrational energies of the neutral molecule and corresponding ion reveal the charge effect on the metal-oxygen bond of both species. The single band system in the spectrum of LaO arises from the transition of the ground state of the neutral molecule with the La(6s 1 )O(2p 6 ) valence configuration to the ground state of the singly charged ion with the La(6s o )O(2p 6 ) configuration. Here, the multiple band systems in the spectrum of CeO are attributed to the spin-orbit coupling for the Ce(4f 1 6s 1 )O(2p 6 ) configuration of the neutral molecule and an excited state for the Ce(4f 1 )O(2p 6 ) configuration of the ion.

Development of $\mathrm{AMOEBA}$ Polarizable Force Field for Rare-Earth La 3+ Interaction with Bioinspired Ligands

Rare-earth metals (REMs) are crucial for many important industries, such as power generation and storage, in addition to cancer treatment and medical imaging. One promising new REM refinement approach involves mimicking the highly selective and efficient binding of REMs observed in relatively recently discovered proteins. However, realizing any such bioinspired approach requires an understanding of the biological recognition mechanisms. In this report we developed a new classical polarizable force field based on the AMOEBA framework for modeling a lanthanum ion (La 3+ ) interacting with water, acetate, and acetamide, which have been found to coordinate the ion in proteins. The parameters were derived by comparing to high-level ab initio quantum mechanical (QM) calculations that include relativistic effects. The AMOEBA model, with advanced atomic multipoles and electronic polarization, is successful in capturing both the QM distance-dependent La 3+ –ligand interaction energies and experimental hydration free energy. A new scheme for pairwise polarization damping (POLPAIR) was developed to describe the polarization energy in La 3+ interactions with both charged and neutral ligands. Simulations of La3+ in water showed water coordination numbers and ion–water distances consistent with previous experimental and theoretical findings. Water residence time analysis revealed both fast and slow kinetics in water exchange around the ion. This new model will allow investigation of fully solvated lanthanum ion–protein systems using GPU-accelerated dynamics simulations to gain insights on binding selectivity, which may be applied to the design of synthetic analogues.

Effect of Multiple Oxygen Vacancies on the Optical and Thermodynamic Properties of La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ Perovskite

We report the oxygen vacancy concentration of perovskite changes with the work condition in applications such as oxygen carriers and oxygen sensors. To explore the effect of multiple oxygen vacancies on the optical and thermodynamic properties, we perform first-principles calculations to investigate the formation of multiple oxygen vacancies in the paramagnetic La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ . Our results show that the higher VO concentration in La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ occurs at the conditions of higher temperatures and lower oxygen partial pressures. The electrons liberated upon oxygen vacancy formation are partially localized on the nearby Fe/Co sites and partially delocalized through the lattice, with the result that the unoccupied Fe/Co states near the Fermi level decrease and the Fermi level shows an upward shift. From the results of optical absorption, the peaks from 250 to 600 nm are weakened and blue-shifted with increase of oxygen vacancy concentration, due to the decrease of empty Fe states and an upward shift of the Fermi level. The obvious change of optical absorption with oxygen vacancy concentration indicates that La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ could be a good candidate for optical oxygen sensors in the visible spectrum.

Exotic Long-Range Surface Reconstruction on La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 Thin Films

Due to an extremely diverse phase space, La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 , as with other manganites, offers a wide range of tunability and applications including colossal magnetoresistance and use as spin-polarized electrodes. Here, we study an unprecedented, exotic surface reconstruction (6 × 6) in La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 (x = 0.3) observed via low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) shows the surface is relatively flat, with unit-cell step heights, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals a strong degree of Sr segregation at the surface. By combining electron diffraction and first-principles computations, we propose that the long-range surface reconstruction consists of a Sr-segregated surface with La (6 × 6) ordering. This study expands our understanding of manganite systems and underscores their ability to form interesting surface reconstructions, driven largely by cation segregation that can potentially be controlled for tuning surface ordering.

Twists and Puckers: Tuning Crystal Chemistry in the La(Au x Ge 1– x ) 2 Compositional Series

The physical properties of solid-state materials are closely tied to their crystal structure, yet our understanding of how competing structural arrangements energetically compare is limited. In this work, we explore how small differences in composition affect structure in the La(Au x Ge 1-x ) 2 series of compounds, comprising four unique structure types between LaGe 2 and LaAu 2 . This family includes the previously unknown AlB2-type compound with the stoichiometry La(Au 0.375 Ge 0.625 ) 2 , as well as La(Au 0.25 Ge 0.75 ) 2 , an intergrowth of the AlB 2 and ThSi 2 structure types. We then study the chemical forces driving the structure changes, including using phonon band structure calculations and DFT Chemical Pressure to evaluate atomic size effects. These calculations show that the parent AlB 2 structure type is disfavored in Au-rich compounds due to soft atomic motions along the c axis. The instability of AlB 2 -type LaAuGe is confirmed by the presence of imaginary modes in the phonon band structure that correspond to a ‘puckering’ of the hexagonal AlB 2 -type lattice, resulting in the experimentally observed LiGaGe structure type. The impact of size effects is less clear for Au-poor compositions; instead, ‘twisting’ the AlB 2 structure type to form the ThSi 2 type opens a pseudogap at the Fermi level in the electronic density of states. Here, this investigation demonstrates how crystal structure in solid-state materials can be compositionally tuned based on balancing size and electronics when multiple structure types are in close thermodynamic competition.

Low-temperature grapho-epitaxial La-substituted BiFeO 3 on metallic perovskite

Bismuth ferrite has garnered considerable attention as a promising candidate for magnetoelectric spin-orbit coupled logic-in-memory. As model systems, epitaxial BiFeO 3 thin films have typically been deposited at relatively high temperatures (650–800 °C), higher than allowed for direct integration with silicon-CMOS platforms. Here, we circumvent this problem by growing lanthanum-substituted BiFeO 3 at 450 °C (which is reasonably compatible with silicon-CMOS integration) on epitaxial BaPb 0.75 Bi 0.25 O 3 electrodes. Notwithstanding the large lattice mismatch between the La-BiFeO 3 , BaPb 0.75 Bi 0.25 O 3 , and SrTiO 3 (001) substrates, all the layers in the heterostructures are well ordered with a [001] texture. Polarization mapping using atomic resolution STEM imaging and vector mapping established the short-range polarization ordering in the low temperature grown La-BiFeO 3 . Current-voltage, pulsed-switching, fatigue, and retention measurements follow the characteristic behavior of high-temperature grown La-BiFeO 3 , where SrRuO 3 typically serves as the metallic electrode. These results provide a possible route for realizing epitaxial multiferroics on complex-oxide buffer layers at low temperatures and opens the door for potential silicon-CMOS integration.

Existence of La-site antisite defects in LaMO 3 (M = Mn, Fe, and Co) predicted with many-body diffusion quantum Monte Carlo

The properties of LaMO 3 (M: 3d transition metal) perovskite crystals are significantly dependent on point defects, whether introduced accidentally or intentionally. The most studied defects in La-based perovskites are the oxygen vacancies and doping impurities on the La and M sites. Here, we identify that intrinsic antisite defects, the replacement of La by the transition metal, M, can be formed under M-rich and O-poor growth conditions, based on results of an accurate many-body ab initio approach. Our fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (FNDMC) calculations of LaMO 3 (M = Mn, Fe, and Co) find that such antisite defects can have low formation energies and are magnetized. Complementary density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations show that Mn antisite defects in LaMnO 3 may cause the p-type electronic conductivity. These features could affect spintronics, redox catalysis, and other broad applications. Our bulk validation studies establish that FNDMC reproduces the antiferromagnetic state of LaMnO 3 , whereas DFT with PBE (Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof), SCAN (strongly constrained and appropriately normed), and the LDA+U (local density approximation with Coulomb U) functionals all favor ferromagnetic states, at variance with experiment.
