Simulating spin dynamics of supersolid states in a quantum Ising magnet

Motivated by a recent experimental study on the quantum Ising magnet K 2 Co(SeO 3 ) 2 that presented spectroscopic evidence of zero-field supersolidity (Chen et al., arXiv:2402.15869), we simulate the excitation spectrum of the corresponding microscopic XXZ model for the compound, using the recently developed excitation ansatz for infinite projected entangled-pair states. Here, we map out the ground state phase diagram and compute the dynamical spin structure factors across a range of magnetic field strengths, focusing especially on the two supersolid phases found near zero and saturation fields. Our simulated excitation spectra for the zero-field supersolid “Y” phase are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Reference lattice, sound, stiffness, and magnetic transitions of Ising monolayers

A reference lattice, away from which elastic distortions induced by the spin texturing of two-dimensional (2D) magnets take hold, is motivated from a picture of pairwise Biot-Savart interactions among identical solenoids that either elongate or compress a (“zero-current”) spring lattice. Applied to a paradigmatic CrSiTe 3 monolayer, the reference is given by the average between the atomic positions of ferromagnetic (FM) and Néel antiferromagnetic (AFM) lattices; such an atomic disposition permits understanding structural distortions and elastic energies due to magnetism readily. Furthermore, the anisotropic speed of sound in the magnetic ground state explains an observed anisotropy of vibrational frequencies on similar magnets. Elastic stiffness constants are reported, too. Magnetic energies in four Ising structural configurations were calculated and the strain needed for those 2D magnets to undergo an AFM to FM quantum phase transition was determined as well.

Experimental Realization of the 1D Random Field Ising Model

Here we have measured magnetic-field-induced avalanches in a square artificial spin ice array of interacting nanomagnets. Starting from the ground state ordered configuration, we imaged the individual nanomagnet moments after each successive application of an incrementally increasing field. The statistics of the evolution of the moment configuration show good agreement with the canonical one-dimensional random field Ising model. We extract information about the microscopic structure of the arrays from our macroscopic measurements of their collective behavior, demonstrating a process that could be applied to other systems exhibiting avalanches.

Dynamics and phases of nonunitary Floquet transverse-field Ising model

Inspired by current research on measurement-induced quantum phase transitions, we analyze the nonunitary Floquet transverse-field Ising model with complex nearest-neighbor couplings and complex transverse fields. Unlike its unitary counterpart, the model shows a number of steady phases, stable to integrability-breaking perturbations. Some phases have robust edge modes and/or spatiotemporal long-range orders in the bulk. The transitions between the phases have extensive entanglement entropy, whose scaling with the system size depends on the number of the real quasiparticle modes in the spectrum at the transition. In particular, the volume-law scaling appears on some critical lines, protected by pseudo-Hermiticity. Both the scaling of entanglement entropy in steady states and the evolution after a quench are compatible with the non-Hermitian generalization of the quasiparticle picture of Calabrese and Cardy at least qualitatively. First demonstration of tuning between the Kitaev and Ising limits in a honeycomb lattice

Recent observations of novel spin-orbit coupled states have generated interest in 4d/5d transition metal systems. A prime example is the J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ state in iridate materials and α-RuCl 3 that drives Kitaev interactions. Here, by tuning the competition between spin-orbit interaction (λ SOC ) and trigonal crystal field (Δ T ), we restructure the spin-orbital wave functions into a previously unobserved μ = $\frac{1}{2}$ state that drives Ising interactions. This is done via a topochemical reaction that converts Li 2 RhO 3 to Ag 3 LiRh 2 O 6 . Using perturbation theory, we present an explicit expression for the μ = $\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit Δ T ≫ λ SOC realized in Ag 3 LiRh 2 O 6 , different from the conventional J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit λ SOC ≫ Δ T realized in Li 2 RhO 3 . The change of ground state is followed by a marked change of magnetism from a 6 K spin-glass in Li 2 RhO 3 to a 94 K antiferromagnet in Ag 3 LiRh 2 O 6 .

Quantum phase transition dynamics in the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

The quantum Kibble-Zurek mechanism (QKZM) predicts universal dynamical behavior near the quantum phase transitions (QPTs). It is now well understood for the one-dimensional quantum matter. Higher-dimensional systems, however, remain a challenge, complicated by the fundamentally different character of the associated QPTs and their underlying conformal field theories. In this work, we take the first steps toward theoretical exploration of the QKZM in two dimensions for interacting quantum matter. We study the dynamical crossing of the QPT in the paradigmatic Ising model by a joint effort of modern state-of-the-art numerical methods, including artificial neural networks and tensor networks. As a central result, we quantify universal QKZM behavior close to the QPT. We also note that, upon traversing further into the ferromagnetic regime, deviations from the QKZM prediction appear. We explain the observed behavior by proposing an extended QKZM taking into account spectral information as well as phase ordering. Our work provides a testing platform for higher-dimensional quantum simulators.

Duality and form factors in the thermally deformed two-dimensional tricritical Ising model

The thermal deformation of the critical point action of the 2D tricritical Ising model gives rise to an exact scattering theory with seven massive excitations based on the exceptional E_7 E 7 Lie algebra. The high and low temperature phases of this model are related by duality. This duality guarantees that the leading and sub-leading magnetisation operators, \sigma(x) σ ( x ) and \sigma'(x) σ ′ ( x ) , in either phase are accompanied by associated disorder operators, \mu(x) μ ( x ) and \mu'(x) μ ′ ( x ) . Working specifically in the high temperature phase, we write down the sets of bootstrap equations for these four operators. For \sigma(x) σ ( x ) and \sigma'(x) σ ′ ( x ) , the equations are identical in form and are parameterised by the values of the one-particle form factors of the two lightest \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 odd particles. Similarly, the equations for \mu(x) μ ( x ) and \mu'(x) μ ′ ( x ) have identical form and are parameterised by two elementary form factors. Using the clustering property, we show that these four sets of solutions are eventually not independent; instead, the parameters of the solutions for \sigma(x)/\sigma'(x) σ ( x ) / σ ′ ( x ) are fixed in terms of those for \mu(x)/\mu'(x) μ ( x ) / μ ′ ( x ) . We use the truncated conformal space approach to confirm numerically the derived expressions of the matrix elements as well as the validity of the \Delta Δ -sum rule as applied to the off-critical correlators. We employ the derived form factors of the order and disorder operators to compute the exact dynamical structure factors of the theory, a set of quantities with a rich spectroscopy which may be directly tested in future inelastic neutron or Raman scattering experiments.

Energy-momentum tensor in the 2D Ising CFT in full modular space

A set of lattice operators for the energy-momentum (EM) tensor in the Ising CFT is derived in the spin variables. Our expression works under arbitrary affine transformation both on triangular and hexagonal lattices (where the former includes the rectangular lattices). The correctness of the operators is numerically confirmed in Monte Carlo calculations by comparing the results with the conformal Ward identity, including the operator normalization. In the derivation of the EM tensor, a staggered structure of the affine-transformed hexagonal lattice is analyzed, which shows a peculiar shift from the circumcenter dual lattice and appears as a mixing angle between the holomorphic part $T(z)$ and the antiholomorphic part $\tilde T(\bar z)$. The details of this contribution will appear in a subsequent paper.

Confinement and Kink Entanglement Asymmetry on a Quantum Ising Chain

In this work, we explore the interplay of confinement, string breaking and entanglement asymmetry on a 1D quantum Ising chain. We consider the evolution of an initial domain wall and show that, surprisingly, while the introduction of confinement through a longitudinal field typically suppresses entanglement, it can also serve to increase it beyond a bound set for free particles. Our model can be tuned to conserve the number of domain walls, which gives an opportunity to explore entanglement asymmetry associated with link variables. We study two approaches to deal with the non-locality of the link variables, either directly or following a Kramers-Wannier transformation that maps bond variables (kinks) to site variables (spins). We develop a numerical procedure for computing the asymmetry using tensor network methods and use it to demonstrate the different types of entanglement and entanglement asymmetry.

Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Breathing Kagome Ising Antiferromagnet Yb 3 Ni 11 Ge 4.63

We have investigated magnetic properties of the rare-earth based intermetallic compound Yb 3 Ni 11 Ge 4.63 (YNG), where Yb 3+ ions form a breathing-kagome lattice. Single-site 4f electron wavefunctions of the ground-state doublet are deduced from magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The Weiss temperatures are quite anisotropic as Θ a = -0.01(2) K (H ∥ a) and Θ c = -0.67(2) K (H ∥ c), indicating Ising-like spin–spin interactions dominating in this compound. Low-temperature neutron diffraction confirms absence of magnetic Bragg peaks down to 0.05 K, whereas enhancement of broad peaks below 0.8 K was observed, a signature of short-range spin correlations. Furthermore, competing interactions on the breathing-kagome lattice would suppress a magnetic long-range order in YNG.

A model of the near-earth plasma environment and application to the ISEE-A and -B orbit

A model of the near-earth environment to obtain a best estimate of the average flux of protons and electrons in the energy range from 0.1 to 100 keV for the International Sun-Earth Explorer (ISEE)-A and -B spacecraft. The possible radiation damage to the thermal coating on these spinning spacecraft is also studied. Applications of the model to other high-altitude satellites can be obtained with the appropriate orbit averaging. This study is the first attempt to synthesize an overall quantitative environment of low-energy particles for high altitude spacecraft, using data from in situ measurements.

The ISEE-C gamma ray burst spectrometer

The technical properties, operation, and expected sensitivity are discussed for an experiment intended to search for narrow lines in the spectra of gamma ray bursts during the ISEE-C mission. At the heart of the experiment is a radiatively cooled germanium solid state photon detector. The instrumentation is capable of storing the entire spectrum of all but the largest bursts in the energy range 0.05-6.5 MeV. In addition, it analyzes the signals from two CsI detectors in two other experiments on the spacecraft and records event time histories from these to a few millisecond accuracy. A background mode permits spectral analysis during quiet times and will allow the determination of physically interesting upper limits for narrow lines in the diffuse gamma ray background radiation.
