SAR Polarimetry and Interferometry

The field of synthetic aperture radar changed dramatically over the past decade with the operational introduction of advanced radar techniques such as polarimetry and interferometry.

Theoretical Modeling in Very Long Baseline Interferometry

Interferometry at radio frequencies between Earth-based receivers separated by intercontinental distances had made significant contributins to astrometry and geophysics during the past three decades, Analyses of such very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) experiments now permit measurements of relative positions of points on the Earth's surface, and angles between celestial objects, at the levels of 1cm and 1 nanoradian, respectively. The relative angular positions of extragalactic radio sources inferred from this technique presently form the best ralization of an inertial reference frame. This review summarizes the current theoretical models that are needed to extract results from the VLBI observables at such levels of accuracy.

A Mini-Surge on theRyder Glacier, Greenland Observed via Satelite Radar Interferometry

A dramatic short term speed up of the Ryder glacier has been detected using satellite radar interferometry. The accelerated flow represents a substantial, though short-lived, change in the ice discharge from this basin. We believe that meltwater was involved in this event, either as an active participant, as meltwater-filled lakes on the surface of the glacier drained during the period of rapid motion.

Results of 1993 Repeat-Pass SAR Interferometry Experiments

In this talk we present results of a repeat-pass SAR interferometry experiment performed in June 1993 near Portage, Maine. Differential GPS data accurate to +/-10cm were acquired to aid in motion compensation and geolocation of targets in the imagery. The experiment and data analysis will be discussed, and results will be shown during the presentation.

Indirect Planet Detection with Ground-Based Interferometry

Narrow-angle astrometry with long-baseline infrared interferometers can provide extremely high accuracies as required for indirect planet detection. Narrow-angle asrometric interferometry exploits the properties of atmospheric turbulence over fields smaller than the interferometer baseline divided by the atmospheric scale height.

Aseismic deformation of a fold-and-thrust belt imaged by SAR interferometry near Shahdad, southeast Iran

At depth, many fold-and-thrust belts are composed of a gently dipping, basal thrust fault and steeply dipping, shallower splay faults that terminate beneath folds at the surface. Movement on these buried faults is difficult to observe, but synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry has imaged slip on at least 600 square kilometers of the Shahdad basal-thrust and splay-fault network in southeast Iran.

Limitations To Optical/IR Interferometry

The primary limitation to ground-based optical/IR interferometry is the turbulent atmosphere, which limits sensitivity by restricting the coherence volume, limits imaging accuracy by corrupting the fringe phase, and limits astrometric acuracy by corrupting the angel of arrival.

An examination of along-track interferometry for detecting ground moving targets

Along-track interferometry (ATI) is an interferometric synthetic aperture radar technique primarily used to measure Earth-surface velocities. We present results from an airborne experiment demonstrating phenomenology specific to the context of observing discrete ground targets moving admidst a stationary clutter background.

Preliminary results from an airborne experiment using along-track interferometry for ground moving target indication

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) along track interferometry (ATI) has been used extensively to measure ocean surface currents. Given its ability to measure small velocities of relatively radar-dark water surfaces, there is great potential that this technique can be adapted for ground moving target indication (GMTI) applications, particularly as a method for detecting very slwo targets with small radar cross sections. In this paper we describe preliminary results from an ATI GMTI experiment.

Space Interferometry System Testbed-3: architecture

The Space Interferometry Mission's System testbed-3 has recently integrated its Precision Support Structure and spacecraft backpack on a pseudo free-free 0.5 Hz passive isolation system. The Precision Support Structure holds a 3-baseline stellar interferometer instrument.

Wide angle astrometric demonstration on the micro-arcsecond metrology testbed for the space interferometry mission

The Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) requires fringe measurements to the level of picometers in order to produce astrometric data at the micro-arc-second level. To be more specific, it is necessary to measure both the position of the starlight central fringe and the change in the internal optical path of the interferometer to a few hundreds of picometers. The internal path is measured with a small heterodyne metrology beam, whereas the starlight fringe position is estimated with a CCD sampling a large concentric annular beam. One major challenge for SIM is to align the metrology beam with the starlight beam to keep the consistency between these two sensors at the system level while articulating the instrument optics over the field of view.
