Facilitated transport membrane with functionalized ionic liquid carriers for CO 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /O 2 , and CO 2 /air separations

CO 2 separations from cabin air and the atmospheric air are challenged by the very low partial pressures of CO 2 . In this study, a facilitated transport membrane (FTM) is developed to separate CO 2 from air using functionalized ionic liquid (IL) and poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) carriers. A highly permeable bicontinuous structured poly(ethersulfone)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) ( b PES/PET) substrate is used to support the PIL–IL impregnated graphene oxide thin film. The CO 2 separation performance was tested under a mixture feed of CO 2 /N 2 /O 2 /H 2 O. Under 410 ppm of CO 2 at 1 atm feed gas, CO 2 permanence of 3923 GPU, and CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /O 2 selectivities of 1200 and 300, respectively, are achieved with helium sweeping on the permeate side. For increased transmembrane pressure (>0 atm), a thicker PIL–IL/GO layer was shown to provide mechanical strength and prevent leaching of the mobile carrier. CO 2 binding to the carriers, ion diffusivities, and the glass transition temperature of the PIL–IL gels were examined to determine the membrane composition and rationalize the superior separation performance obtained. This report represents the first FTM study with PIL–IL carriers for CO 2 separation from air.

Volatile fatty acid extraction from fermentation broth using a hydrophobic ionic liquid and in situ enzymatic esterification

Efficient recovery of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from fermentation broth is a challenge due to low VFA titers and thus limits the commercialization of VFA production using biological routes. Liquid–liquid extraction using hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) shows great promise for the extraction and esterification of hydrophilic VFAs. In this study, several ILs were evaluated to select a water-immiscible and efficient extraction solvent. The selected IL, trihexyltetradecyl phosphonium dibutylphosphate ([P 666,14 ][DBP]), gave a cumulative VFA extraction of around 842.8 mg per g IL. The predicted excess enthalpy (H E ) and logarithmic activity coefficients ln(γ) using the COSMO-RS model were validated with the experimentally obtained VFA recovery from fermentation broth. To understand the extraction mechanism of VFAs, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and noncovalent interaction (NCI) were performed. The results suggest that long chain fatty acids exhibit strong van der Waals interaction with the DBP anion leading to higher VFA extraction. The enzymatic esterification of VFAs with ethanol in [P 666,14 ][DBP] was optimized using the Box–Behnken response surface design of experiment. Under the optimized conditions, up to 83.7% of hexanoic acid was converted to ethyl esters, while other shorter chain VFAs have lower conversion efficiency (38.3–63.2%).

Voltage-induced modulation of interfacial ionic liquids measured using surface plasmon resonant grating nanostructures

We have used surface plasmon resonant metal gratings to induce and probe the dielectric response (i.e., electro-optic modulation) of ionic liquids (ILs) at electrode interfaces. Here, the cross-plane electric field at the electrode surface modulates the refractive index of the IL due to the Pockels effect. This is observed as a shift in the resonant angle of the grating (i.e., Δϕ), which can be related to the change in the local index of refraction of the electrolyte (i.e., Δnlocal). The reflection modulation of the IL is compared against a polar (D2O) and a non-polar solvent (benzene) to confirm the electro-optic origin of resonance shift. The electrostatic accumulation of ions from the IL induces local index changes to the gratings over the extent of electrical double layer (EDL) thickness. Finite difference time domain simulations are used to relate the observed shifts in the plasmon resonance and change in reflection to the change in the local index of refraction of the electrolyte and the thickness of the EDL. Simultaneously using the wavelength and intensity shift of the resonance enables us to determine both the effective thickness and Δn of the double layer. We believe that this technique can be used more broadly, allowing the dynamics associated with the potential-induced ordering and rearrangement of ionic species in electrode–solution interfaces.

A Comparative Study of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid-Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Composites with Enhanced Conductivity Properties for Supercapacitor Applications

Mixtures of ionic liquids (ILs) containing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were prepared and characterized to obtain electrolytes with optimized transport properties for use in energy storage devices such as supercapacitors. Imidazolium ILs bearing cations with side chains of different functionality coupled with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (NTf 2- ) or bis(fluorosulfonyl)-amide (FSA-) anions, were used in mixtures containing up to 5 wt% SWCNTs. At and above 2 wt% nanotube loading, the mixtures exhibited higher conductivities than the pure ILs, in spite of the extremely high viscosities. Loadings of 5 wt% produced very high conductivities, and studies of the temperature dependence indicated a change in the charge transport mechanism between 2 and 5 wt% loading. At 5 wt% loading, the highest conductivities (up to 540 mS/cm at 25 °C) were obtained for the ILs containing the NTf 2- anion. Overall, these results can significantly contribute to the development of improved energy storage devices.

Solid Electrolyte Interphase Formation at the Ionic Liquid Electrolyte—Lithium-Metal Interface Using an Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Approach

An interfacial study is performed using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to elucidate the electrochemical interfacial stability of an ionic liquid (IL) as component of an electrolyte in contact with a Li-metal anode when an additive, vinylene carbonate (VC), is added to the electrolyte. The IL electrolyte is composed of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluoro-sulfonyl)-imide (PYR14 + FSI − ) with lithium bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide salt (Li + TFSI − ) in a 8:2 concentration ratio. Reactions observed at the interface electrolyte/Li-metal during the AIMD simulations are verified by electronic structure calculations using density functional theory calculations considering a continuum solvent model. We found that the addition of VC to the IL prevents further reduction of the counter-ion TFSI − and retards reduction of FSI − in comparison to the case when the additive VC is absent. The PYR14 + reduction is never observed with or without the additive. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd electron affinities of the PYR14 + are −0.08, −0.36 and −3.65 eV, indicating little to large repulsive behavior against electrons. The opposite is observed for the two negative ions, FSI − and TFSI − , which yield 1st electron affinities of 1.73 and 1.83 eV, respectively. Reactions obtained under open circuit conditions. Dissociation mechanisms are presented for all IL components reduced at the IL/Li-metal interface.

Synthesis, antibiotic structure–activity relationships, and cellulose dissolution studies of new room-temperature ionic liquids derived from lignin

Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising pretreatment solvents for lignocellulosic biomass, but are largely prepared from petroleum precursors. Benzaldehydes from depolymerized lignin, such as vanillin, syringaldehyde, and 4-methoxy benzaldehyde, represent renewable feedstocks for the synthesis of ionic liquids. We herein report syntheses of novel lignin-derived ionic liquids, with extended N -alkyl chains, and examine their melting points, cellulose dissolution capacities, and toxicity profiles against Daphnia magna and E. coli strain 1A1. The latter organism has been engineered to produce isoprenol, a drop-in biofuel and precursor for commodity chemicals. The new N,N -diethyl and N,N -dipropyl methyl benzylammonium ILs were liquids at room temperature, showing 75–100 °C decreased melting points as compared to their N,N,N -trimethyl benzylammonium analog. Extension of N -alkyl chains also increased antibacterial activity threefold, while ionic liquids prepared from vanillin showed 2- to 4-fold lower toxicity as compared to those prepared from syringaldehyde and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde. The trend of antibacterial activity for anions of lignin-derived ILs was found to be methanesulfonate < acetate < hydroxide. Microcrystalline cellulose dissolution, from 2 to 4 wt% after 20 min at 100 °C, was observed in all new ILs using light microscopy and IR spectroscopy. Ionic liquids prepared from H-, S- and G-lignin oxidation products provided differential cytotoxic activity against E. coli and D. magna , suggesting these compounds could be tailored for application specificity within a biorefinery.

Data from Genotype-Environment-Management Interactions in Biomass Yield and Feedstock Composition of Photoperiod-Sensitive Energy Sorghum

Recently introduced photoperiod-sensitive (PS) biomass sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) needs to be investigated for yield potential under different cultivation environments with reasonable nitrogen (N) inputs. The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the biomass yield and feedstock quality of four sorghum hybrids with different levels of PS ranging from very PS (VPS) hybrids and to moderate PS (MPS) hybrids, and (2) determine the optimal N inputs (0~168 kg N ha−1) under four environments: combinations of both temperate (Urbana, IL) and subtropical (College Station, TX) regions during 2018 and 2019. Compared to TX, the PS sorghums in central IL showed higher yield potential and steady feedstock production with an extended day length and with less precipitation variability, especially for the VPS hybrids. The mean dry matter (DM) yields of VPS hybrids were 20.5 Mg DM ha−1 and 17.7 Mg DM ha−1 in IL and TX, respectively. The highest N use efficiency occurred at a low N rate of 56 kg N ha−1 by improving approximately 33 kg DM ha−1 per 1.0 kg N ha−1 input. Approximately 70% of the PS sorghum biomass can be utilized for biofuel production, consisting of 58-65% of the cell-wall components and 4-11% of the soluble sugar. This study demonstrated that the rainfed temperate area (e.g., IL) has a great potential for the sustainable cultivation of PS energy sorghum due to their observed high yield potential, stable production, and low N requirements.

Acid external and internal environment exchange the Oreochromis niloticus tissue immune gene expression compared to the mouse macrophage polarization model

The water environment plays an important role in animal physiology. In this study, we sought to evaluate the effect of the acid environment on the Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) internal microenvironment immune response compare to the mouse macrophage model (J77A.1). The acid environment treated mouse macrophage J774A.1 model have shown that acidic treatment is able to polarize macrophages into M2-like macrophages via an increase in Ym1, Tgm2, Arg1, Fizz1, and IL-10 expression. Metabolic analysis of mouse macrophages (J774A.1) at pH 2 vs. pH 7 and pH 4 vs. pH 7 have been shown to promote the expression of intracellular acetylcholine, choline, prochlorperazine, L-leucine, and bisphenol A,2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f] quinolone metabolites in the M2-like macrophage. Immune gene expression of the O. niloticus spleen and liver treated at pH 2, 4, and 7 was shown to reduce TNF-α, IL-1 β, IL-8, and IL-12 expression compared to pH 7 treatment. Immune gene was induced in O. niloticus following culture at pH 5, 6, and 7 fresh water environment. Taken together, we found that the acid internal environment polarizes tissues into an M2 macrophage developmental microenvironment. However, if the external environment is acid, tissues are exposed to an M1 macrophage developmental microenvironment.

The Role of the Anion in Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids for Fuel and Terpenes Processing

The potentialities of methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) as solvents were evaluated for some relevant separation problems—terpene fractionation and fuel processing—studying selectivities, capacities, and solvent performance indices. The activity coefficients at infinite dilution of the solute (1) in the IL (3), γ13∞, of 52 organic solutes were measured by inverse gas chromatography over a temperature range of 333.2–453.2 K. The selected ILs are 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C4mim][PF6], and the equimolar mixture of [C4mim][PF6] and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C4mim]Cl. Generally, low polar solutes follow γ1,C4mimCl∞ > γ1,C4mimPF6+C4mimCl∞ > γ1,C4mimPF6∞ while the opposite behavior is observed for alcohols and water. For citrus essential oil deterpenation, the results suggest that cations with long alkyl chains, such as C12mim+, promote capacity, while selectivity depends on the solute polarity. Promising results were obtained for the separation of several model mixtures relevant to fuel industries using the equimolar mixture of [C4mim][PF6] and [C4mim]Cl. This work demonstrates the importance of tailoring the polarity of the solvents, suggesting the use of ILs with mixed anions as alternative solvents for the removal of aliphatic hydrocarbons and contaminants from fuels.

Designing Imidazolium Poly(amide-amide) and Poly(amide-imide) Ionenes and Their Interactions with Mono- and Tris(imidazolium) Ionic Liquids

Here we introduce the synthesis and thermal properties of a series of sophisticated imidazolium ionenes with alternating amide-amide or amide-imide backbone functionality, and investigate the structural effects of mono(imidazolium) and unprecedented tris(imidazolium) ionic liquids (ILs) in these ionenes. The new set of poly(amide-amide) (PAA) and poly(amide-imide) (PAI) ionenes represent the intersection of conventional high-performance polymers with the ionene archetype–presenting polymers with alternating functional and ionic elements precisely sequenced along the backbone. The effects of polymer composition on the thermal properties and morphology were analyzed. Five distinct polymer backbones were synthesized and combined with a stoichiometric equivalent of the IL 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium bistriflimide ([Bnmim][Tf 2 N]), which were studied to probe the self-assembly, structuring, and contributions of intermolecular forces when IL is added. Furthermore, three polyamide (PA) or polyimide (PI) ionenes with simpler xylyl linkages were interfaced with [Bnmim][Tf 2 N] as well as a novel amide-linked tris(imidazolium) IL, to demonstrate the structural changes imparted by the inclusion of functional, ionic additives dispersed within the ionene matrix. This work highlights the possibilities for utilizing concepts from small molecules which exhibit supramolecular self-assembly to guide creative design and manipulate the structuring of ionenes.

Linker-Free Magnetite-Decorated Gold Nanoparticles (Fe3O4-Au): Synthesis, Characterization, and Application for Electrochemical Detection of Arsenic (III)

Linker-free magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs)-decorated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were grown using a new protocol that can be used as a new platform for synthesis of other intact metal–metal oxide nanocomposites without the need for linkers. This minimizes the distance between the metal and metal oxide nanoparticles and ensures the optimum combined effects between the two material interfaces. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the successful synthesis of the Fe3O4-Au nanocomposite, without any change in the magnetite phase. Characterization, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, revealed the composite to consist of AuNPs of 70 ± 10 nm diameter decorated with tiny 10 ± 3 nm diameter Fe3O4NPs in Au:Fe mass ratio of 5:1. The prepared Fe3O4-Au nanocomposite was embedded in ionic liquid (IL) and applied for the modification of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the electrochemical detection of As(III) in water. By combining the excellent catalytic properties of the AuNPs with the high adsorption capacity of the tiny Fe3O4NPs towards As(III), as well as the good conductivity of IL, the Fe3O4-Au-IL nanocomposite showed excellent performance in the square wave anodic stripping voltammetry detection of As(III). Under the optimized conditions, a linear range of 1 to 100 μg/L was achieved with a detection limit of 0.22 μg/L (S/N = 3), and no interference from 100-fold higher concentrations of a wide variety of cations and anions found in water. A very low residual standard deviation of 1.16% confirmed the high precision/reproducibility of As(III) analysis and the reliability of the Fe3O4-Au-IL sensing interface. Finally, this proposed sensing interface was successfully applied to analyzing synthetic river and wastewater samples with a 95–101% recovery, demonstrating excellent accuracy, even in complex synthetic river and wastewater samples containing high concentrations of humic acid without any sample pretreatments.

Revolutionizing Porous Liquids: Stabilization and Structural Engineering Achieved by a Surface Deposition Strategy

Facile approaches capable of constructing stable and structurally diverse porous liquids (PLs) that can deliver high-performance applications are a long-standing, captivating, and challenging research area that requires significant attention. Here, in this work, a facile surface deposition strategy is demonstrated to afford diverse type III-PLs possessing ultra-stable dispersion, external structure modification, and enhanced performance in gas storage and transformation by leveraging the expeditious and uniform precipitation of selected metal salts. The Ag(I) species-modified zeolite nanosheets are deployed as the porous host to construct type III-PLs with ionic liquids (ILs) containing bromide anion , leading to stable dispersion driven by the formation of AgBr nanoparticles. The as-afforded type-III PLs display promising performance in CO 2 capture/conversion and ethylene/ethane separation. Property and performance of the as-produced PLs can be tuned by the cation structure of the ILs, which can be harnessed to achieve polarity reversal of the porous host via ionic exchange. The surface deposition procedure can be further extended to produce PLs from Ba(II)-functionalized zeolite and ILs containing [SO 4 ] 2– anion driven by the formation of BaSO 4 salts. The as-produced PLs are featured by well-maintained crystallinity of the porous host, good fluidity and stability, enhanced gas uptake capacity, and attractive performance in small gas molecule utilization.

Direct Recycling of Spent NCM Cathodes through Ionothermal Lithiation

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a family of nonconventional molten salts that offer many advantages, such as negligible vapor pressures, negligible flammability, wide liquidus ranges, good thermal stability, and much synthesis flexibility. The unique solvation environment of these ILs provides new reaction or flux media for controlling formation of solid-state materials with a minimum perturbation of morphologies. A successful lithiation via ionothermal synthesis using a cost-effective Li halide as Li source and recyclable ILs as solvents is reported in this study for the direct recycling of LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NCM 111) cathodes. In addition, the ionic liquids can be readily recycled and reused after ionothermal lithiation. The lithiation of spent cathodes can enable the direct recycling of spent cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries.

Tailoring Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction on Copper by Reactive Ionic Liquid and Native Hydrogen Bond Donors

Abstract Electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR) on copper (Cu) shows promise for higher‐value products beyond CO. However, challenges such as the limited CO 2 solubility, high overpotentials, and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous electrolytes hinder the practical realization. We propose a functionalized ionic liquid (IL) which generates ion‐CO 2 adducts and a hydrogen bond donor (HBD) upon CO 2 absorption to modulate CO 2 RR on Cu in a non‐aqueous electrolyte. As revealed by transient voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and in situ surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) complemented with image charge augmented quantum‐mechanical/molecular mechanics (IC‐QM/MM) computations, a unique microenvironment is constructed. In this microenvironment, the catalytic activity is primarily governed by the IL and HBD concentrations; former controlling the double layer thickness and the latter modulating the local proton availability. This translates to ample CO 2 availability, reduced overpotential, and suppressed HER where C 4 products are obtained. This study deepens the understanding of electrolyte effects in CO 2 RR and the role of IL ions towards electrocatalytic microenvironment design.

In Operando Calorimetric Measurements for Activated Carbon Electrodes in Ionic Liquid Electrolytes under Large Potential Windows

This study aims to investigate the effect of the potential window on heat generation in carbon-based electrical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) with ionic-liquid (IL)-based electrolytes using in operando calorimetry. The EDLCs consisted of two identical activated-carbon electrodes with either neat 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide ([Pyr 14 ][TFSI]) electrolyte or 1.0 m [Pyr 14 ][TFSI] in propylene carbonate (PC) as electrolyte. The instantaneous heat generation rate at each electrode was measured under galvanostatic cycling for different potential windows ranging from 1 to 4 V. First, the heat generation rates at the positive and negative electrodes differed significantly in neat IL owing to the differences in the ion sizes and diffusion coefficients. However, these differences were minimized when the IL was diluted in PC. Second, for EDLC in neat [Pyr 14 ][TFSI] at high potential window (4 V), a pronounced endothermic peak was observed at the beginning of the charging step at the positive electrode owing to TFSI - intercalation in the activated carbon. On the other hand, for EDLC in 1.0 m [Pyr 14 ][TFSI] in PC at potential window above 3 V, an endothermic peak was observed only at the negative electrode owing to the decomposition of PC. Third, for both neat and diluted [Pyr 14 ][TFSI] electrolytes, the irreversible heat generation rate increased with increasing potential window and exceeded Joule heating. This was attributed to the effect of potential-dependent charge redistribution resistance. Additionally, a further increase in the irreversible heat generation rate was observed for the largest potential windows owing to the degradation of the PC solvent. Finally, for both types of electrolyte, the reversible heat generation rate increased with increasing potential window because of the increase in the amount of ion adsorbed/desorbed at the electrode/electrolyte interface.
