Evaluation of Physical Microphysical Property Retrieval Algorithms During the 2020 IMPACTS Field Campaign

The NASA Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast Threatening Snowstorms (IMPACTS) field campaign provides high-quality, high-altitude aircraft lidar (532 nm), radar (W-band) and in-cloud microphysical aircraft data taken during wintertime storm events impacting the United States. This study evaluates two mass-dimensional relationships (Brown and Francis (1995, BF95); Heymsfield (2014, H14) and two lidar-radar microphysical retrieval algorithms (Cloudsat and CALIPSO Ice Cloud Property Product (2C-ICE); VarPy (a variational method derived from the satellite lidar-radar data community)) to estimate aircraft-retrieved volume extinction coefficient (σ), ice water content (IWC), and effective radius (r e ) during the 2020 IMPACTS deployment. BF95 and H14 have a close 1:1 correlation (R 2 = 0.98) with in-situ observations of σ. However, only BF95 displays a linear, consistent, and almost temperature-independent low bias for IWC and r e , which likely arises from the environmental conditions used to determine each. Unlike the field-campaign-derived BF95 and H14 relationships, VarPy and 2C-ICE directly ingest the aircraft-based lidar and radar data to simulate σ, IWC, and r e . For all three microphysical parameters, VarPy and 2C-ICE retrieval errors became notably more pronounced around the dendritic growth zone (-15°C to -10°C) and near freezing (≥-5°C), which suggests that both algorithms experience difficulty addressing riming and aggregation processes and with larger particles (dendrites and plates) due in part to their simplified ice particle assumptions. However, the mean-melt diameter ice-particle assumption did yield more accurate IWC estimates, which led to slightly better overall results for VarPy.

Solid amine compounds as sorbents for carbon dioxide: A concept

Solid amine compounds were examined as possible absorbents for removal of carbon dioxide in life support systems of type which may be employed in high altitude aircraft, spacecraft, or submarines. Many solid amine compounds release absorbed carbon dioxide when heated in vacuum, therefore, when properly packaged spent amine compounds can be readily regenerated and put back into service.

Regional land use studies

Remote sensing technology and data from instrumented satellites and high altitude aircraft are proposed for mapping land use on a current national basis, for monitoring changes and trends, and for creating statistical models which can be manipulated to demonstrate the probable effects of proposed land use and of environmental changes over large areas. Both Apollo spacecraft and aircraft photography were used; the spacecraft pictures delineated the cropland and urban boundaries more clearly. A computer model is also proposed for statistical analysis and for printing out updated maps automatically; this model will include a data bank which can be updated rapidly with changes detected by the computer.

Environmental application of remote sensing methods to coastal zone land use and marine resources management

The interrelationships of biophysical environmental systems are investigated. Social decision-making affecting the environments of a coastal megapolis are examined. Remote sensing from high altitude aircraft and satellites afforded a powerful and indepensible tool for inventory and planning for urban development. Repetitive low to medium altitude photography is also used for studying environmental dynamics, and to document the cultural impact of man on his environment.

Cartography

The EROS Cartography Program emphasizes the relationship between topographic activities of the U. S. Geological Service and those at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center. Its objectives are to apply remote sensing systems on high altitude aircraft and orbiting satellites for topographic, planimetric, and thematic mapping of the earth's surface. The goal is to produce specially processed imagery from which useful information can be derived for a varity of disciplines associated with earth resources.

Near field antenna patterns of obstructed Cassegrainian telescopes

The near field antenna pattern of an obstructed optical transmitter, such as a Cassegrainian telescope, has been computed using the Fresnel approximation to the scalar diffraction integral. A number of cases have been considered. These include uniformly illuminated, obstructed circular apertures, and apertures coherently illuminated with a divergent gaussian beam wave. Other beam profiles that may be derived by energy redistribution of the laser beam have also been considered. The techniques used for the numerical evaluation of the Fresnel integral are discussed and results for the optical systems to be used on the High Altitude Aircraft Optical Communications Experiment are presented.

Proposed specification for the solar constant and air mass zero solar spectral irradiance

The specification defines the solar constant and the zero air mass solar spectral irradiance for use in thermal analysis, thermal balance testing, and other tests of spacecraft and spacecraft components and materials. It is based upon data from experimental measurements made from high altitude aircraft, balloons, spacecraft, and the earth's surface. The stated accuracies are based on the estimated accuracies of the measurements, calibrations, and radiometric scales.

The census cities project: A status report for 1971

Work done by the Census Cities Project during 1971 is outlined. The project is designed to detect urban changes in land resource utilization from remote high altitude aircraft and earth orbiting satellite sensors, aid metropolitan regional planners, and provide urban land use maps for various areas. Land use maps are given of several areas observed during 1971.

Analysis of ERTS-1 imagery of Wyoming and its application to evaluation of Wyoming's natural resources

The author has identified the following significant results. The major effort has been toward interpretation of the intermediate and high altitude aircraft data which was available. Project investigators were able to delineate various structures and lithologic units in well-exposed sedimentary sequences and in regions of Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks. In one area, the Precambrian lithologies, which were previously unmapped, include a taconite formation which might be economically important.

Central Atlantic regional ecological test site: A prototype regional environment information system

The author has identified the following significant results. Prior to the actual testing of data from ERTS-1, the principal scientific results to date are the establishment of a model or design for a regional land use information system based on remote sensor data and a firm establishment of the RB-57 type high altitude aircraft data base as an important tool in land use mapping. Preliminary user evaluations of the resulting land use data have been favorable, and one of the states, Maryland, has adopted the USGS-GAP land use system as a first step towards mapping their entire state. The State is funding an extension (to the west) of the part of Maryland not covered by CARETS (Central Atlantic Regional Ecological Test Site), using the GAP land use classification and mapping procedures.
