Thermal and concentration effects on 1 H NMR relaxation of Gd 3+ -aqua using MD simulations and measurements

We report gadolinium-based contrast agents are key in clinical MRI for enhancing the longitudinal NMR relativity (r 1 ) of hydrogen nuclei ( 1 H) in water and improving the contrast among different tissues. The importance of MRI in clinical practice cannot be gainsaid, yet the interpretation of MRI relies on models with severe assumptions, reflecting a poor understanding of the molecular-scale relaxation processes. In a step towards building a clearer understanding of the relaxation processes, here we investigate thermal and concentration effects on r 1 of the Gd 3+ -aqua complex using both semi-classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and measurements. We follow the MD simulation approach recently introduced by [Singer et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2021, 23, 20974], in which no NMR relaxation model or free-parameter is assumed to predict r 1 , thereby bringing new insights into the physics of r 1 on a molecular scale. We expand the autocorrelation function G(t) in terms of molecular modes and determine the thermal activation energies of the two largest modes, both of which are consistent with the range of literature values for rotational diffusion. We also determine the activation energies for translational diffusion and low-field electron-spin relaxation, both of which are consistent with the literature. Furthermore, we validate the MD simulations at human body temperature and concentrations of the paramagnetic ion used in clinical MRI, and we quantify the uncertainties in both simulations and measurements.

Defect-induced formation and frustration-driven multiple magnetic transitions in Gd 2 Co 0.90 Si 2.90

A new ternary compound, Gd 2 Co 0.90 Si 2.90 , has been synthesized in a chemically single phase by deliberately introducing lattice vacancies in the Co and Si sites. The system is characterized by DC magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Here, a detailed experimental study reveals that the system exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition below T N = 11.3 K followed by spin freezing behaviour below T B ~ 4.8 K. An additional high-temperature magnetic transition could also be detected at T H ~ 150 K, which is short range in character and is associated with defect-induced polarization of the conduction electrons. The spin-glass-like state formation in the system is additionally bolstered by the observation of magnetic relaxation and associated aging phenomena as well as the magnetic memory effect. On the basis of non-equilibrium dynamical behaviour, we argue that the glassy state in this compound favours the hierarchical model over the droplet model. DFT calculations and experimental outcomes establish that the ground state is magnetically frustrated due to the small energy difference between distinct spin configurations having closely spaced ground-state energies.

Proton damage in (Y,Lu,Gd) 3 (Al,Ga) 5 O 12 :Ce mixed garnet scintillators

Scintillators are vital components for nuclear instrumentation and its applications, including plasma diagnostics and imaging. As yields in controlled fusion experiments increase, the radiation tolerance of scintillator candidates for use in instrumentation is of particular importance. High radiation exposure can damage scintillating materials and alter the optical properties. The effects of radiation damage in Ce-doped mixed garnet ceramics over the compositional range (Y,Gd,Lu) 3 (Al,Ga) 5 O 12 are investigated using optical techniques. The samples were exposed to 200 keV protons to an accumulated fluence of 10 16 protons per square centimeter, then characterized using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). DRS with visible light can assess the radiation tolerance of opaque poly-crystalline samples, which can be easily sintered from powders and thus offer distinct advantages in characterization compared to single crystals. Qualitative trends in induced absorption are presented as a function of composition, and the ideal cerium dopant concentration for Y 2 LuAl 5 O 12 is determined to be 0.60–0.75 mol.%.

Determination of single-crystal elastic moduli of Li RE F 4 ( RE =Y, Gd, and Tb) by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy

The tetragonal fluoro-scheelite Li RE F 4 compounds (RE = rare earth) have been shown to exhibit a variety of useful optical and magnetic properties. While LiYF 4 has been widely studied, many of the fundamental thermodynamic properties of other members of this family remain unknown. Here, we report the complete elastic tensors (C ij ) of single-crystalline LiYF 4 , LiTbF 4 , and LiGdF 4 using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). Here we compare the results for LiYF 4 with prior experimental results using time-of-flight ultrasound methods. This is the first report, however, of the experimental elastic tensors of LiTbF 4 and LiGdF 4 . The present results point to a softening of the elastic moduli of the Li RE F 4 system when Y is replaced by the larger ionic radius of Tb or Gd. Furthermore, we find that just 0.3% doping with Nd on the Y site also leads to a slight softening of the moduli. The variation of the elastic moduli as a function of temperature up to 216°C was also measured. A nearly linear softening of all seven independent elastic moduli was observed with increasing temperature. Phonon dispersions and phonon density of states obtained by DFT support the experimental finding of a significantly higher sound velocity due to lighter Y atoms in LiYF 4 , as compared to heavier LiTbF 4 and LiGdF 4 .

Measurement of the light yield response of the Gd-compatible water-based liquid scintillator with the Brookhaven one-ton testbed

The water-based liquid scintillator (WbLS) enables hybrid detection by combining scintillation and Cherenkov signals, providing superior event reconstruction capabilities compared to conventional neutrino detectors. For this work, we measured the light yield of Gd-compatible WbLS at varying concentrations from 0.35% to 1% by mass, using cosmic-ray muons in a 1-ton scale detector at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The light yield is measured as (69.2 ± 6.9) ph/MeV at 0.35% concentration, which increased to (87.3 ± 8.7) ph/MeV at 1%. These results establish a quantitative basis for optimizing future WbLS-based detectors in neutrino physics.

Magnetoelastic coupling and phases in the skyrmion lattice magnet Gd 2 PdSi 3 discovered by high-resolution dilatometry

In this work, we report detailed thermodynamic studies on high-quality single crystals of the centrosymmetric skyrmion-hosting intermetallic Gd 2 PdSi 3 by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry in fields up to 15 T which are complemented by specific heat and magnetization studies. Our dilatometric measurements show magnetoelastic effects associated with antiferromagnetic order at T N1 =22.3 K and T N2 =19.7 K, as well as strong field effects in an applied magnetic field of 15 T up to 200 K (150 K) for B ∥ c (B ∥ a*, i.e., B ⊥ c). The data allow us to complete the magnetic phase diagram, including a feature at T * ≈13K below which an additional degree of freedom becomes relevant. The magnetic B vs T phase diagram for the a * axis is also reported. Grüneisen analysis shows the onset of magnetic contributions around 60 K, i.e., well above TN1. Uniaxial pressure dependencies of opposite signs, –1.3 and 0.3 K/GPa, are extracted for the out-of-plane and in-plane directions at T N1 . For T * we obtain ∂T * /∂p c =1.4 K/GPa. In particular we elucidate thermodynamic properties of the recently discovered skyrmion lattice phase and show that it is strongly enhanced by uniaxial pressure.

Robust Kagome Electronic Structure in Topological Quantum Magnets XMn 6 Sn 6 (X = Dy, Tb, Gd, Y)

Crystal geometry can greatly influence the emergent properties of quantum materials. As an example, the kagome lattice is an ideal platform to study the rich interplay between topology, magnetism, and electronic correlation. In this work, combining high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of XMn 6 Sn 6 (X=Dy,Tb,Gd,Y) family compounds. Here, we observe the Dirac fermion and the flat band arising from the magnetic kagome lattice of Mn atoms. Interestingly, the flat band locates in the same energy region in all compounds studied, regardless of their different magnetic ground states and 4f electronic configurations. These observations suggest a robust Mn magnetic kagome lattice across the XMn 6 Sn 6 family, thus providing an ideal platform for the search for, and investigation of, new emergent phenomena in magnetic topological materials.

Ground-state degeneracy and complex magnetism of geometrically frustrated Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97

We report a new triangular-lattice intermetallic compound Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97 was successfully synthesized as single phase by deliberately introducing vacancies. Theoretical analysis suggests that the ground state is competing with several low-energy spin configurations due to magnetic frustration on a nearly ideal triangular lattice. Despite a number of competing magnetic states, the compound exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order at16K, a long-range ferrimagnetic transition at 6.5 K, and a reentrant cluster-glass transition below T f ~ 3K. The complex magnetism in the compound could be correlated with competing antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic structures predicted theoretically.

High-field magnetic phase diagrams of the 𝑅⁢Mn 6 ⁢Sn 6 (𝑅=Gd–Tm) kagome metals

𝑅⁢Mn 6 ⁢Sn 6 (𝑅=Y, Gd–Lu) kagome metals are promising materials hosting flat electronic bands and Dirac points that interact with magnetism. The coupling between the two magnetic 𝑅 and Mn sublattices can drive complex magnetic states with potential consequences for spin and charge transport and other topological properties. Here, in this work, we use a detailed magnetic Hamiltonian to calculate and predict the magnetic phase diagrams for 𝑅⁢Mn 6 ⁢Sn 6 kagome metals within the mean-field approximation. These calculations reveal a variety of collinear, noncollinear, and noncoplanar phases that arise from competition between various interlayer magnetic exchange interactions and magnetic anisotropies of the 𝑅 and Mn ions. We enumerate these phases and their magnetic space groups for future analysis of their impact on topological and trivial bands near the Fermi surface.

Anomalous Hall effect in the polar magnet Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 : A candidate for hosting skyrmions

While recent theoretical studies have positioned noncollinear polar magnets with C nv symmetry as compelling candidates for realizing topological magnetic phases and substantial intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity, experimental realizations of the same in strongly correlated systems remain rare. Here, we present a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect and extended topological magnetic ordering in Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 with hexagonal C 6v symmetry. Observation of topological Hall response, corroborated by metamagnetic anomalies in isothermal magnetization, peak/hump features in field-evolution of ac susceptibility and longitudinal resistivity suggest the signature of topological magnetic phases. The anomalous Hall effect is quantitatively accounted for by the intrinsic Berry curvature-mediated mechanism. Finally, our results underscore polar magnets as a promising platform to investigate a plethora of emergent electrodynamic responses rooted in the interplay between magnetism and topology.

Temperature-dependent magnetic-field-induced ab -plane Gd spin reorientations in antiferromagnetic domains in a single crystal of the tetragonal A-type antiferromagnet GdRh 2 Si 2

The compound GdRh 2 Si 2 crystallizes in the body-centered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure and exhibits A-type antiferromagnetic order below its Néel temperature T N = 107 K where the Gd moments are ferromagnetically aligned in the ab-plane with the moments in adjacent planes aligned antiferromagnetically. Previously, the nonlinear low-field magnetization versus field M ab ( H ∥ [1, 0, 0]) measurements on single crystals were interpreted in terms of a mean-field model. Here, in this work, we reinterpret this nonlinearity more simply in terms of the response of the ordered moments in four noninteracting tetragonal domains to the applied field and find good agreement with our theory.

High- K , two-quasiparticle states in Gd 160

Excited states in Gd 160 were populated via β decay from the low- and high-spin isomers in Eu 160 . The high-spin, K π = 5 - state feeds several two-quasiparticle levels, as well as a sequence associated with a γ vibration and a K π = 4 + , hexadecapole vibrational structure. The decay scheme was significantly improved with the observation of new transitions and states when compared with the two competing level schemes from over four decades ago. Configuration assignments for some of the multiquasiparticle levels have been suggested, based upon decay properties, systematics from neighboring nuclei, and comparisons with theoretical calculations. Finally, in addition, 15 new low-spin states and approximately 60 new transitions were observed resulting from the decay of the low-spin Eu 160 isomer.

Multinucleon transfer mechanism in Gd 160 + W 186 collisions in stochastic mean-field theory

The multinucleon transfer mechanism in 160 Gd + 186 W collisions is investigated in the framework of quantal transport description, based on the stochastic mean-field (SMF) theory. The SMF theory provides a microscopic approach for nuclear dynamics beyond the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach by including mean-field fluctuations. Finally, cross sections for the primary fragment production are determined in the quantal transport description and compared with the available data.

Measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic cross section using atmospheric neutrinos in the SK-Gd experiment

We report the first measurement of the atmospheric neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) cross section in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) water Cherenkov detector. In June 2020, SK began a new experimental phase, named SK-Gd, by loading 0.011% by mass of gadolinium into the ultrapure water of the SK detector. The introduction of gadolinium to ultrapure water has the effect of improving the neutron-tagging efficiency. Using a 552.2 day dataset from August 2020 to June 2022, we measure the NCQE cross section to be 0.74 ± 0.22 ( stat ) − 0.15 + 0.85 ( syst ) × 10 − 38 cm 2 / oxygen in the energy range from 160 MeV to 10 GeV, which is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino-flux-averaged theoretical NCQE cross section and the measurement in the SK pure-water phase within the uncertainties. Furthermore, we compare the models of the nucleon-nucleus interactions in water and find that the binary cascade model and the Liège intranuclear cascade model provide a somewhat better fit to the observed data than the Bertini cascade model. Since the atmospheric neutrino-oxygen NCQE reactions are one of the main backgrounds in the search for diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB), these new results will contribute to future studies—and the potential discovery—of the DSNB in SK. Realizing Kagome Band Structure in Two-Dimensional Kagome Surface States of RV 6 Sn 6 (R = Gd, Ho)

Here, we report angle resolved photoemission experiments on a newly discovered family of kagome metals RV 6 Sn 6 (R = Gd, Ho). Intrinsic bulk states and surface states of the vanadium kagome layer are differentiated from those of other atomic sublattices by the real-space resolution of the measurements with a small beam spot. Characteristic Dirac cone, saddle point, and flat bands of the kagome lattice are observed. Our results establish the two-dimensional (2D) kagome surface states as a new platform to investigate the intrinsic kagome physics.

Structure of the (110) Ln ScO 3 ( Ln =Gd,Tb,Dy) surfaces

The surface reconstruction on the (110) surface of LnScO 3 (Ln=Gd,Tb,Dy) has been investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron diffraction coupled with higher-level density-functional theory methods. The experimental techniques generate constraints on the surface chemistry and structure that are used to inform the theoretical comparison of a number of potential surface structures. The resulting structure is then compared to experimental aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy results using multislice simulation. The surfaces of both single-crystalline substrates and hydrosauna synthesized nanoparticles exhibit a Sc-rich double layer with a Sc 3 O 4 termination.
