Industrial realization of a direct Fourier transform in automated experimental data processing systems

Fourier processing of automatic signals transforms direct current voltage into a numerical form through bandpass filtration in time-pulse multiplying devices. It is shown that the ratio of the interference energy to the useful signal energy is inversely proportional to the square of the product of the depth of the width modulation and the ratio of the time constant averaging to the cross-multiplied signals.

Atmospheric convective velocities and the Fourier phase spectrum

The relationship between convective velocity and the Fourier phase spectrum of the cross correlation is developed. By examining the convective velocity as a function of frequency, one may determine if Taylor's conversion from time statistics to space statistics is valid. It is felt that the high shear regions of the atmospheric boundary layer need to be explored to determine the validity of the use of Taylor's hypothesis for this region.

Astronomical Fourier spectropolarimetry

Spectra of the Stokes polarization parameters of Venus (resolution 0.5 per cm) are presented. They were obtained at the Cassegrain focus of the 154-cm telescope of the National Mexican Observatory, Baja California, Mexico, July 12 and 13, 1972, with the Fourier Interferometer Polarimeter (FIP). A preliminary, limited analysis of four spectral features and of the CO2 rotational band structures at 6080 and 6200 per cm has demonstrated that spectral polarization is indeed present. These experimental results, confirmed by two series of observations, provide substantiation for this theoretically predicted phenomenon. They also tend to show that the FIP represents a novel astronomical tool for variable spectral resolution studies of both the intensity and the state of polarization of astronomical light sources.

Instrumentation optimization in Fourier spectroscopy. I - Far infrared beam splitters

Computations of the reflectivity, transmissivity, and efficiency properties for TE, TM, and T45 deg waves of far-infrared beam splitters and of the polarizations induced at both reflection and transmission are described. Effects of variations in the state of polarization, orientation, pointing accuracy, and wavelength of the incident light, as well as variations in refractive index and thickness of the beam splitters, are discussed. These results apply directly to Fourier interferometer-spectrometers. They can be used for optimizing the performance of these instruments. They indicate, in particular, that some advantages may be gained by the use of incident polarized light (angle of polarization smaller than about 45 deg or negative elliptical polarization) or light of large incidence angle (larger than approximately 60 deg) or both.

Fourier transform techniques for the inference of cloud motion

The development and evaluation are reported of phase shift techniques based on the Fourier transform for the estimation of cloud motion from geosynchronous meteorological satellite photographs. An alternative approach to cloud motion estimation, involving thresholding, was proposed and studied.

Stepwise Iterative Fourier Transform: The SIFT

A program, designed specifically to study the respective effects of some common data problems on results obtained through stepwise iterative Fourier transformation of synthetic data with known waveform composition, was outlined. Included in this group were the problems of gaps in the data, different time-series lengths, periodic but nonsinusoidal waveforms, and noisy (low signal-to-noise) data. Results on sinusoidal data were also compared with results obtained on narrow band noise with similar characteristics. The findings showed that the analytic procedure under study can reliably reduce data in the nature of (1) sinusoids in noise, (2) asymmetric but periodic waves in noise, and (3) sinusoids in noise with substantial gaps in the data. The program was also able to analyze narrow-band noise well, but with increased interpretational problems. The procedure was shown to be a powerful technique for analysis of periodicities, in comparison with classical spectrum analysis techniques. However, informed use of the stepwise procedure nevertheless requires some background of knowledge concerning characteristics of the biological processes under study.

Measurements of solar magnetic fields by Fourier transform techniques. I - Unsaturated lines

If the basic profile shapes of the normal Zeeman triplet do not have zeros in their Fourier transform, the magnetic field splitting can be determined independent of the profile shape. When the ratio of the splitting of the components is greater than the intrinsic FWHM of the component profiles, the magnetic splitting can be determined with significantly greater accuracy than the measurement accuracy of the original profile. For Gaussian shaped components and a ratio of magnetic splitting to FWHM of 1.5, the noise reduction factor is 25.

Infrared Fourier spectrometer for laboratory use and for astronomical studies from aircraft and ground-based telescopes

A portable, versatile, IR Fourier spectrometer is described that provides 0.5 per cm spectral resolution in the 0.87-5.6-micron region. This spectrometer is employed in a varied program of astronomical observations from ground-based telescopes and from the NASA 91.5-cm airborne IR telescope. A number of spectral results are presented to illustrate the performance of this spectrometer in astronomical applications.

High resolution Fourier interferometer-spectrophotopolarimeter

A high-resolution Fourier interferometer-spectrophotopolarimeter is provided using a single linear polarizer-analyzer the transmission axis azimuth of which is positioned successively in the three orientations of 0 deg, 45 deg, and 90 deg, in front of a detector; four flat mirrors, three of which are switchable to either of two positions to direct an incoming beam from an interferometer to the polarizer-analyzer around a sample cell transmitted through a medium in a cell and reflected by medium in the cell; and four fixed focussing lenses, all located in a sample chamber attached at the exit side of the interferometer. This arrangement can provide the distribution of energy and complete polarization state across the spectrum of the reference light entering from the interferometer; the same light after a fixed-angle reflection from the sample cell containing a medium to be analyzed; and the same light after direct transmission through the same sample cell, with the spectral resolution provided by the interferometer.

Transient excitation and data processing techniques employing the fast fourier transform for aeroelastic testing

The development of testing techniques useful in airplane ground resonance testing, wind tunnel aeroelastic model testing, and airplane flight flutter testing is presented. Included is the consideration of impulsive excitation, steady-state sinusoidal excitation, and random and pseudorandom excitation. Reasons for the selection of fast sine sweeps for transient excitation are given. The use of the fast fourier transform dynamic analyzer (HP-5451B) is presented, together with a curve fitting data process in the Laplace domain to experimentally evaluate values of generalized mass, model frequencies, dampings, and mode shapes. The effects of poor signal to noise ratios due to turbulence creating data variance are discussed. Data manipulation techniques used to overcome variance problems are also included. The experience is described that was gained by using these techniques since the early stages of the SST program. Data measured during 747 flight flutter tests, and SST, YC-14, and 727 empennage flutter model tests are included.

Feasibility investigation of integrated optics Fourier transform devices

The possibility of producing an integrated optics data processing device based upon Fourier transformations or other parallel processing techniques, and the ways in which such techniques may be used to upgrade the performance of present and projected NASA systems were investigated. Activities toward this goal include; (1) production of near-diffraction-limited geodesic lenses in glass waveguides; (2) development of grinding and polishing techniques for the production of geodesic lenses in LiNbO3 waveguides; (3) development of a characterization technique for waveguide lenses; and (4) development of a theory for corrected aspheric geodesic lenses. A holographic subtraction system was devised which should be capable of rapid on-board preprocessing of a large number of parallel data channels. The principle involved is validated in three demonstrations.

Review of finite fields: Applications to discrete Fourier, transforms and Reed-Solomon coding

An attempt is made to provide a step-by-step approach to the subject of finite fields. Rigorous proofs and highly theoretical materials are avoided. The simple concepts of groups, rings, and fields are discussed and developed more or less heuristically. Examples are used liberally to illustrate the meaning of definitions and theories. Applications include discrete Fourier transforms and Reed-Solomon coding.
