Smart Outlets: Wireless Meter and Control Systems for Plug and Process Loads

Smart outlets control the flow of power to devices plugged into them and measure their energy use. The energy use data can be accessed via an online dashboard or smartphone application, allowing the user to turn power to plug-in devices on or off based on a schedule established in the dashboard or application. This four-page resource is a fact sheet meant to educate commercial building owners on smart outlets: what they are, why we use them, and how to use them in a way that will achieve energy savings while maintaining occupant comfort. The resource also describe how to procure a smart outlet system and how to fully capture their benefits over time. This resource was developed to support the Better Buildings Alliance Plug and Process Loads Technology Research Team.

Air Passengers' Joint Decisions about Ground Access and Parking

With increasing air travel demand, it is important for airports to evaluate infrastructure investment and demand management solutions to curb traffic congestion and minimize landside energy consumption. Understanding the decisions and choices air passengers make about their ground access modes is important for both developing infrastructure planning strategies and assessing the impacts of emerging modes on airport revenues, particularly from parking. But parking choice is often overlooked in the modeling of airport ground access choices. To address this gap, NREL's Athena team developed a nested multinomial logit regression model based on a passenger survey conducted at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 2015. This fact sheet is an overview of the approach and its impact.

Investment Tax Credit Requirements for Privately Owned Solar Photovoltaic Systems on Federal Sites

The federal investment tax credit (ITC) is an economically valuable tax incentive offered to taxable business entities that invest in certain energy technologies. The ITC is based on a percentage of the qualifying upfront capital costs of a project and directly reduces a business's tax liability (i.e., the taxes paid). This fact sheet focuses on ITC considerations for privately owned solar photovoltaic (PV) projects on federal land and buildings, although some of the considerations may be applicable to other technologies and non-federal entities.

Transforming Energy through Computational Science: Computing for Clean Energy

This fact sheet discusses the opportunity space for NREL's computational science capabilities to address national clean energy objectives. Achieving a carbon-free power sector by 2035 as a step towards a decarbonized U.S. energy economy in 2050 will require major advances in power generation, autonomous energy systems, transportation, and buildings/communities. Development of integrated modeling approaches for complex energy systems will be essential for deployment. Success requires developments in optimization and control theory, complemented by machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), all of which in turn need targeted investments in breadth and scale of computing. This document defines an opportunity space where: embracing computing can link established research and development (R&D) to a decarbonization agenda; pursuing emerging approaches can accelerate the pace of technology advancement across the portfolio; and leading by example could reduce the carbon footprint of computing worldwide.

Designing for Supply and Return Air System Interaction in Residential Buildings

Standard practice for HVAC return design has evolved from running a dedicated return to each room with a supply, to systems with returns in more centrally located areas of the home with jump ducts, transfer grilles, or simply door undercuts used as return air pathways from isolated rooms . In these latter systems, hallways and stairwells act as large open ducts for conveying air back to a single (or sometimes multiple) central return. When partition doors to an isolated room are closed, the return airflow resistance goes up, significantly impacting airflow balance if an adequate relief pathway is not installed. Airflow imbalances can lead to comfort and building durability issues and increased envelope leakage. To combat this, some jurisdictions have requirements for return air pathways. The supply system topology – or layout - impacts the airflow balance stability in response to adjustments of return pathway resistances. Branching supply topologies typically have reduced static pressure after each split. The static pressure at the final split will be lower than the primary supply plenum. Because of this, if there is a restriction in a room’s return path, supply airflow will tend to redistribute to adjacent ducts at the end of the branch. A properly designed trunk and branch supply system can effectively equalize static pressure by reducing the cross sectional area after each takeoff . Maintaining static pressure within the trunk will reduce the system’s sensitivity to changes in return paths. However, in practice, it is difficult to design and time consuming to install a complex supply plenum. Velocity effects and poor takeoff placement also impact airflow balance. This fact sheet considers return systems in three main categories: distributed, with a return duct to each room; multiple central, with one return grille on each floor of a home; and single central, with a single return grille located near the air handling unit. Three supply categories are also considered: radial splitter box, trunk and branch, and home-run with all ducts connecting directly to a central manifold. A complete description of the modeling work and results can be found in the companion technical report.
