Conceptual design of pointing control systems for space station gimballed payloads

A conceptual design of the control system for Payload Pointing Systems (PPS) is developed using classic Proportional-Integral-Derivatives (PID) techniques. The major source of system pointing error is due to the disturbance-rich environment of the space station in the form of gimbal baseplate motions. These baseplate vibrations are characterized using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) techniques. Both time domain and frequency domain dynamic models are developed to assess control system performance. Three basic methods exist for the improvement of PPS pointing performance: increase control system bandwidth, add Image Motion Compensation, and/or reduce (or change) the baseplate disturbance environment.

Phase noise measurements of the 400-kW, 2.115-GHz (S-band) transmitter

The measurement theory is described and a test method to perform phase noise verification using off-the-shelf components and instruments is presented. The measurement technique described consists of a double-balanced mixer used as phase detector, followed by a low noise amplifier. An FFT spectrum analyzer is then used to view the modulation components. A simple calibration procedure is outlined that ensures accurate measurements. A block diagram of the configuration is presented as well as actual phase noise data from the 400 kW, 2.115 GHz (S-band) klystron transmitter.

Experimental and analytical evaluation of dynamic load and vibration of a 2240-kW (300-hp) rotorcraft transmission

A dynamic analysis of a 2240-kW (3000-hp) helicopter planetary system is presented. Results from both analytical and experimental studies show good correlation in gear-tooth loads. A parametric study indicates that the mesh damping ratio has a significant effect on maximum gear tooth load, stress, and vibration. Correlation with experimental results indicates that the Sun-planet mesh damping ratio can significantly differ from the planet ring mesh damping ratio. A numerical fast Fourier transform (FFT) procedure was applied to examine the mesh load components in the frequency domain and the magnitudes of multiple tooth pass frequencies excited by nonsynchronous meshing of the planets. Effects of tooth-spacing errors and tooth-profile modifications with tip relief are examined. A general discussion of results and correlation with the experimental study are also presented.

A static data flow simulation study at Ames Research Center

Demands in computational power, particularly in the area of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), led NASA Ames Research Center to study advanced computer architectures. One architecture being studied is the static data flow architecture based on research done by Jack B. Dennis at MIT. To improve understanding of this architecture, a static data flow simulator, written in Pascal, has been implemented for use on a Cray X-MP/48. A matrix multiply and a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT), two algorithms used in CFD work at Ames, have been run on the simulator. Execution times can vary by a factor of more than 2 depending on the partitioning method used to assign instructions to processing elements. Service time for matching tokens has proved to be a major bottleneck. Loop control and array address calculation overhead can double the execution time. The best sustained MFLOPS rates were less than 50% of the maximum capability of the machine.

Onboard multichannel demultiplexer/demodulator

An investigation performed for NASA LeRC by COMSAT Labs, of a digitally implemented on-board demultiplexer/demodulator able to process a mix of uplink carriers of differing bandwidths and center frequencies and programmable in orbit to accommodate variations in traffic flow is reported. The processor accepts high speed samples of the signal carried in a wideband satellite transponder channel, processes these as a composite to determine the signal spectrum, filters the result into individual channels that carry modulated carriers and demodulate these to recover their digital baseband content. The processor is implemented by using forward and inverse pipeline Fast Fourier Transformation techniques. The recovered carriers are then demodulated using a single digitally implemented demodulator that processes all of the modulated carriers. The effort has determined the feasibility of the concept with multiple TDMA carriers, identified critical path technologies, and assessed the potential of developing these technologies to a level capable of supporting a practical, cost effective on-board implementation. The result is a flexible, high speed, digitally implemented Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) bulk demultiplexer/demodulator.

Some approaches to substructure coupling with damping

Time-domain and frequency-domain methods for coupling substructures with general linear damping are discussed. A time-domain method is presented which employs a state variable representation of each substructure. Also presented is a method which employs frequency-domain coupling together with DFT and FFT transformations to obtain transient response solutions.

Fast frequency acquisition via adaptive least squares algorithm

A new least squares algorithm is proposed and investigated for fast frequency and phase acquisition of sinusoids in the presence of noise. This algorithm is a special case of more general, adaptive parameter-estimation techniques. The advantages of the algorithms are their conceptual simplicity, flexibility and applicability to general situations. For example, the frequency to be acquired can be time varying, and the noise can be non-Gaussian, nonstationary and colored. As the proposed algorithm can be made recursive in the number of observations, it is not necessary to have a priori knowledge of the received signal-to-noise ratio or to specify the measurement time. This would be required for batch processing techniques, such as the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The proposed algorithm improves the frequency estimate on a recursive basis as more and more observations are obtained. When the algorithm is applied in real time, it has the extra advantage that the observations need not be stored. The algorithm also yields a real time confidence measure as to the accuracy of the estimator.

Temperature Fluctuations During Crystal Growth

Technique developed to deconvolve period and relative amplitude of fluctuations of heat flow inBridgman crystal growth. Temperature-measuring device with enough sensitivity and frequency response to make desired measurements inserted close as possible to substance monitored. Time-dependent temperature response recorded, and time domain response converted to frequency domain for further analysis. Fast fourier transform (FFT) of data on temperature oscillations shows particular behavior at some specific frequencies corresponding with striations, or defects observed on crystal. Useful procedure to help determine sources of some growth-induced crystalline defects. Other processes sensitive to small temperature fluctuations, such as diffusion, precipitation, and corrsion, benefit from technique.

Quantile Vocoder

Parameters of spectral envelope obtained statistically. Algorithm for digital compression of speech signals encodes power spectral density of each short interval of speech by use of quantiles or order statistics. Purpose to reduce bit rate and bandwidth required for transmission. When fully developed, quantile vocoder - speech-encoding system based on new algorithm - expected moderately complicated compared with other speech-encoding systems and reproduce high-quality speech from code transmitted at relatively low bit rates. Speech signal treated mathematically as though amplitude spectrum stationary during short coding intervals, called "windows". Window duration of 20 or 35 ms, chosen as compromise between frequency resolution and time resolution. During each window, short-time amplitude and power spectra found by sampling at high rate (typically 10 kHz) and taking fast Fourier transforms (FFT's).

Blade loss transient dynamics analysis, volume 2. Task 2: TETRA 2 user's manual

This is the user's manual for the TETRA 2 Computer Code, a program developed in the NASA-Lewis Blade Loss Program. TETRA 2 calculates a turbine engine's dynamic structural response from applied stimuli. The calculation options are: (1) transient response; and (2) steady state forced response. Based on the method of modal syntheses, the program allows the use of linear, as well as nonlinear connecting elements. Both transient and steady state options can include: flexible Bladed Disk Module, and Nonlinear Connecting Elements (including deadband, hardening/softening spring). The transient option has the additional capability to calculate response with a squeeze film bearing module. TETRA 2 output is summarized in a plotfile which permits post processing such as FFT or graphical animation with the proper software and computer equipment.

Algorithms and programming tools for image processing on the MPP:3

This is the third and final report on the work done for NASA Grant 5-403 on Algorithms and Programming Tools for Image Processing on the MPP:3. All the work done for this grant is summarized in the introduction. Work done since August 1986 is reported in detail. Research for this grant falls under the following headings: (1) fundamental algorithms for the MPP; (2) programming utilities for the MPP; (3) the Parallel Pascal Development System; and (4) performance analysis. In this report, the results of two efforts are reported: region growing, and performance analysis of important characteristic algorithms. In each case, timing results from MPP implementations are included. A paper is included in which parallel algorithms for region growing on the MPP is discussed. These algorithms permit different sized regions to be merged in parallel. Details on the implementation and peformance of several important MPP algorithms are given. These include a number of standard permutations, the FFT, convolution, arbitrary data mappings, image warping, and pyramid operations, all of which have been implemented on the MPP. The permutation and image warping functions have been included in the standard development system library.

Solar Dynamics and G-modes

Various properties of r-modes that would occupy the solar convection zone were computed. Values were calculated for the energy loss from the coefficient of eddy viscosity using the solar convective zone model. Viscous damping is strong and removes one-third or more of the mode energy each oscillation period. A fast Fourier transform (FFT) of daily Zurich sunspot number was made for eight sets of data, taken near peaks of solar cycles 14 to 21. The FFTs were evaluated with the Wolff and Hickey model. The horizontal component of F sub h of the force exerted by a planetary torque was calculated to see is it works on the photospheric layers at a rate comparable to 0.000001 solar luminosity. The time span of torque in the external sector of the Sun was calculated. The duration of the effect of two planets in conjunction on sunspot numbers was examined. The north-south asymmetry of solar activity was investigated.

Estimation of geopotential from satellite-to-satellite range rate data: Numerical results

A technique for high-resolution geopotential field estimation by recovering the harmonic coefficients from satellite-to-satellite range rate data is presented and tested against both a controlled analytical simulation of a one-day satellite mission (maximum degree and order 8) and then against a Cowell method simulation of a 32-day mission (maximum degree and order 180). Innovations include: (1) a new frequency-domain observation equation based on kinetic energy perturbations which avoids much of the complication of the usual Keplerian element perturbation approaches; (2) a new method for computing the normalized inclination functions which unlike previous methods is both efficient and numerically stable even for large harmonic degrees and orders; (3) the application of a mass storage FFT to the entire mission range rate history; (4) the exploitation of newly discovered symmetries in the block diagonal observation matrix which reduce each block to the product of (a) a real diagonal matrix factor, (b) a real trapezoidal factor with half the number of rows as before, and (c) a complex diagonal factor; (5) a block-by-block least-squares solution of the observation equation by means of a custom-designed Givens orthogonal rotation method which is both numerically stable and tailored to the trapezoidal matrix structure for fast execution.

An operations manual for the digital data system

The Digital Data System (DDS) was designed to incorporate the analog-to-digital conversion process into the initial data acquisition stage and to store the data in a digital format. This conversion is done as part of the acquisition process. Consequently, the data are ready to be analyzed as soon as the test is completed. This capability permits the researcher to alter test parameters during the course of the experiment based on the information acquired in a prior portion of the test. The DDS is currently able to simultaneously acquire up to 10 channels of data. The purpose of this document is fourfold: (1) to describe the capabilities of the hardware in sufficient detail to allow the reader to determine whether the DDS is the optimum system for a particular experiment; (2) to present some of the more significant software developed to provide analyses within a short time of the completion of data acquisition; (3) to provide the reader with sample runs of major software routines to demonstrate their convenience and simple usage; and (4) a portion of the document is used to describe software which uses an FFT-box to provide a means of comparison against which the DDS can be checked.

Techniques for the analysis of data from coded-mask X-ray telescopes

Several techniques useful in the analysis of data from coded-mask telescopes are presented. Methods of handling changes in the instrument pointing direction are reviewed and ways of using FFT techniques to do the deconvolution considered. Emphasis is on techniques for optimally-coded systems, but it is shown that the range of systems included in this class can be extended through the new concept of 'partial cycle averaging'.

Forced periodic vibration of unsymmetric piecewise-linear systems

The forced steady response of a single degree of freedom system involving a large nonlinearity, represented by unsymmetric piecewise-linear stiffness, is determined by a harmonic balance Newton-Raphson method with the application of the fast Fourier transformation (FFT) algorithm. All possible subharmonic, harmonic, and superharmonic responses are sought. The responses of two systems involving subharmonic and superharmonic dominant motions are calculated by the newly developed method and compared with previously published findings. The results obtained by using this method reveal the details of the response of the systems more efficiently than previous methods.

r-mode oscillations in the sun

The relationship between solar r-modes (long-period oscillations dominated by the Coriolis force) and solar activity cycles is investigated statistically. FFT power spectra of the daily Zurich sunspot numbers (R) and of the Greenwich Photoheliographic projected whole sunspot area (A) are obtained for the high-activity years of solar cycles 14 through 21. Both R and A are found to exhibit periods of 22 + or - 1 d, 34 + or - 1.5 d, and 43 + or - 2 d, corresponding to r-modes with (l,m) angular harmonics (2,2), (3,1), and (2,1), respectively.
