Encoding nonlinear and unsteady aerodynamics of limit cycle oscillations using nonlinear sparse Bayesian learning

This article investigates the applicability of a recently proposed, nonlinear sparse Bayesian learning (NSBL) algorithm to identify and estimate the complex aerodynamics of limit cycle oscillations. NSBL provides a semi-analytical framework for determining the data-optimal sparse model nested within a (potentially) over-parameterized model. This is particularly relevant to nonlinear dynamical systems where modelling approaches involve the use of physics-based and data-driven components. In such cases, the data-driven components, where analytical descriptions of the physical processes are not readily available, are often prone to overfitting, meaning that the empirical aspects of these models will often involve the calibration of an unnecessarily large number of parameters. While an overparameterized model may fit the observed data well, such models may be inadequate for making predictions in regimes that are different from those wherein the data were recorded. In view of this, it is desirable to not only calibrate the model parameters, but also identify the optimal compromise between data fit and model complexity. In this article, we exhibit the optimal model discovery for an aeroelastic system wherein the structural dynamics are well-known and described by a differential equation model, coupled with a semi-empirical aerodynamic model for laminar separation flutter, resulting in low-amplitude limit cycle oscillations (LCO). To illustrate the performance of the algorithm, in this article, we use synthetic data and demonstrate the ability of the algorithm to correctly rediscover the optimal model and model parameters, given a known data-generating model. The synthetic data are generated from a forward simulation of a known differential equation model with parameters selected so as to mimic the dynamics observed in wind-tunnel experiments. Subsequently, we demonstrate the performance of the algorithm for model selection using noisy LCO data from wind tunnel experiments. As there is no ground truth available for the experimental data case, we provide a comparison between NSBL and Bayesian model selection to validate the results, and demonstrate the use of NSBL as an efficient alternative to traditional methods.

Optimizing pressurized-water reactor equilibrium cycle using a novel loading pattern encoding and rule-based genetic crossover operators

This work presents an extended multi-batch approach applied in shuffling scheme optimization for equilibrium cycle for pressurized water reactors using Genetic Algorithms (GAs). A new ruled based GA crossover operator called Inherited Location and Batch (ILB) was introduced to enhance offsprings reproduction efficiency specialized for equilibrium cycle optimization problem. This approach was implemented within the Plant ReLoad Optimization (PRLO) framework and validated using a generic reactor model based on the AP1000 design, with core parameters calculated via the CASMO/SIMULATE software package. The ILB approach is then applied for both single and multi-objective problems in maximizing cycle length and core average exposure while minimizing the average enrichment of the 57 fresh fuel assemblies (FAs) per cycle. The optimal solutions are selected based on their dominance to the objectives from all feasible solutions. This research identified three optimal solutions satisfied safety constraints: The first solution minimizes feed enrichment costs with a cycle length of 338.8 days and core exposure of 25.39 MWd/MT; the second solution extends cycle length to 361.2 days, with the highest core exposure of 26.84 MWd/MT, using 3.75 wt% average fuel enrichment; the third solution balances both objectives with a cycle length of 349.6 days, core exposure of 25.82 MWd/MT with a slight enrichment increase compared to the first solution. Collectively, these findings underscore the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed approach in achieving practical multi-objective optimal equilibrium cycle designs using GAs optimizer.

B -Alkyl-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane Reagents Promote Closed-Shell Nickel-Catalyzed Alkylarylation Toward Encoded Cyclooctene Monomers

Access to new tailored monomers is essential to explore unprecedented polymer structures and modulate their properties. In previous work, we disclosed an iteroselective diarylation of 1,5-cyclooctadiene as an attractive platform for preparing diverse cyclooctene monomers; however, it was limited to C(sp 2 ) coupling partners. Established difunctionalization methods with C(sp 3 ) fragments rely on carbon-based radical formation, which is incompatible with 1,5-cyclooctadiene. This work describes a two-electron redox manifold for the nickel-catalyzed alkylarylation of 1,5-cyclooctadiene and discloses B -alkyl-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (alkyl-9-BBN) as an effective transmetalating reagent for maintaining a polar reaction mechanism. The method provides 5,6-alkylarylated cyclooctenes suitable for ring-opening metathesis polymerization to obtain new materials. The properties of these polymers are benchmarked and fine-tuned by variation of coupling partners in the nickel catalysis. Density functional theory calculations revealed that destabilization of the pretransmetalation complex promotes the reactivity of alkyl-9-BBN in transmetalation compared to alkylboronic esters.

Nanoparticle Superlattices through Template-Encoded DNA Dendrimers

The chemical interactions that lead to the emergence of hierarchical structures are often highly complex and difficult to program. In this paper, the synthesis of a series of superlattices based upon 30 different structurally reconfigurable DNA dendrimers is reported, each of which presents a well-defined number of single-stranded oligonucleotides (i.e., sticky ends) on its surface. Such building blocks assemble with complementary DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to yield five distinct crystal structures, depending upon choice of dendrimer and defined by phase symmetry. These DNA dendrimers can associate to form micelle-dendrimers, whereby the extent of association can be modulated based upon surfactant concentration and dendrimer length to produce a low-symmetry Ti5Ga4-type phase that has yet to be reported in the field of colloidal crystal engineering. Taken together, colloidal crystals that feature three different types of particle bonding interactions.template-dendron, dendrimer-dendrimer, and DNA-modified AuNP-dendrimer.are reported, illustrating how sequence-defined recognition and dynamic association can be combined to yield complex hierarchical materials.
