Choline Chloride-Based Water-in-Salt Electrolyte for Efficient Iron Electrodeposition

Electrochemical production of iron is a promising low-cost and modular approach to replace the traditional blast furnace. Aqueous electrolytes for iron electrolysis are advantageous as they can be operated at near-ambient temperatures, but they suffer from inefficiencies due to the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction. In this work, we identify a new water-in-salt electrolyte (WiSE) based on choline chloride (ChCl) for high coulombic efficiency (>85%) iron deposition. Electrochemical analysis of the partial current densities of iron plating and hydrogen co-evolution revealed that, at optimal WiSE compositions, water reduction is kinetically suppressed resulting in an increase in the Fe plating efficiency. Decreased coordination of water and increased coordination of choline’s alcohol group with the Fe 2+ ion were observed through 1 H NMR providing evidence that water reduction is kinetically suppressed in WiSE. Additionally, Raman spectroscopy revealed that complexation effects (with Cl – ) reduce Fe 2+ diffusion coefficients and corresponding limiting currents as the ChCl concentration is increased. This results in an optimal WiSE composition (4 M ChCl + 1 M FeCl 2 ) that provides kinetic suppression of HER but also low transport resistance to Fe plating yielding 85% coulombic efficiency at high current densities.

225 Ac/ 213 Bi Generator Based on Millifluidics Controlled Electrodeposition

Radioisotopes provide both diagnostic tools and therapeutic treatments for cancer and other diseases. In the US, millions of radioisotope doses are given to patients per year. Radiopharmaceutical generators are widely used to provide such short-lived medical radioisotopes in a clinical setting. These generators work by exploiting chemical differences in a parent/daughter isotope relationship. Actinium-225 (half-life 10 d) is used to provide clinically useful amounts of daughter isotopes 213 Bi (46 m). An integrated millifluidic 225 Ac/ 213 Bi radiopharmaceutical generator device was engineered to produce 213 Bi labeled biomolecules. Using recent LANL successes in additive manufacturing of small-scale fluidic devices, a disposable device was developed that integrates three steps for the production of 213 Bi labeled antibodies: 1) 213 Bi separation from 225 Ac parent, 2) 213 Bi antibody labeling, and 3) purification of the labelled antibody.

Self-Assembly and Phase Separation for Transport: A brief argument for the continued exploration of liquid crystal flows and electrodeposition in micro-gravity

Phase separation, interfacial tension gradients, and molecular self-assembly are all phenomena frequently observed when manipulating soft condensed matter systems on Earth. Depending on the system these processes can also be quite predictable. For instance, on Earth water droplets placed on hydrophobic surfaces will have contact angles > 90° with limited spread, contrary to their wetting behavior on hydrophilic surfaces. However, in an environment that is in a constant state of free-fall, where the gravitational field is reduced by 10%, such as on the International Space Station (ISS), buoyancy and its effect on fluid convection also become negligible. Fluid flow and phase behavior become less predictable. Thus, continuing the prior example, even if water droplets still remain in contact with a surface in microgravity (µg), the interface between the air and droplets will still remain significantly curved, appearing almost as if they were placed over completely nonwetting surfaces (Fig. 1a). Moreover, the negligible opposing buoyant force would also mean that if immiscible liquid droplets of a less dense character, or air bubbles even (Fig. 1b), were to be suspended within a larger water drop, these immiscible droplets or air bubbles would not migrate toward any one direction unless either artificially propelled by an external force or internal reaction inducing flow.
