Characterization of High Speed Optical and Magnetic Interactions in Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors

Single-photon detectors are essential tools for quantum photonics. The ideal single photon detector would exhibit a quantum efficiency (QE) of 100% (i.e. no false negatives), zero dark photon counts per second (i.e. no false positives), zero dead time (i.e. the detector is capable of detecting one photon immediately after another), and zero jitter (i.e. the electrical signal produced by the detector perfectly reproduces the timing of the input photon signal). Commercially available avalanche photodiodes (APDs) have generally performed reasonably well for visible wavelengths but they perform poorly at longer wavelengths. For wavelengths spanning the near- ultraviolet (UV) to the mid- infrared (IR), superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) can exhibit quantum efficiencies exceeding 90% with dark count rates and timing jitter roughly an order of magnitude less than is typically seen in APDs. While SNSPDSs are now commercially available from several small businesses, fundamental questions about the nature of photon interactions with superconducting nanostructures remain.

Implementation of Johnson Noise Thermometry into Radiation Hardened Electronics

The random motion of charge carriers in an electrical conductor is a function of its temperature. This phenomenon generates an electrical signal, referred to as Johnson noise, that is present in all analog signals. Conversely, the temperature dependence of the Johnson noise spectrum also enables a direct measurement of absolute temperature, which can provide a secondary measurement of temperature when quantified using sensors such as resistive temperature devices (RTDs) in a process called Johnson noise thermometry (JNT). For nuclear environments, this is of particular interest in correcting for RTDs signal drift caused by accumulation, transmutation, and displacement damage caused by neutron and gamma irradiation.

High-Density, Actively Multiplexed µECoG Array on Reinforced Silicone Substrate

Simultaneous interrogation of electrical signals from wide areas of the brain is vital for neuroscience research and can aid in understanding the mechanisms of brain function and treatments for neurological disorders. There emerges a demand for development of devices with highly conformal interfaces that can span large cortical regions, have sufficient spatial resolution, and chronic recording capability while keeping a small implantation footprint. In this work, we have designed 61 channel and 48 channel high-density, cortical, micro-electrocorticographic electrode arrays with 400 µm pitch on an ultra-soft but durable substrate. We have also developed a custom multiplexing integrated circuit (IC), methods for packaging the IC in a water-tight liquid crystal polymer casing, and a micro-bonding method for attaching the electronics package to the electrode array. With the integrated multiplexer, the number of external wire connections can be reduced to 16 wires, thereby diminishing the invasive footprint of the device. Both the electrode array and IC were tested in vivo in a rat model to demonstrate the ability to sense finely-localized electrophysiological signals.

Fueling the Future: The Emergence of Self-Powered Enzymatic Biofuel Cell Biosensors

Self-powered biosensors are innovative devices that can detect and analyze biological or chemical substances without the need for an external power source. These biosensors can convert energy from the surrounding environment or the analyte itself into electrical signals for sensing and data transmission. The self-powered nature of these biosensors offers several advantages, such as portability, autonomy, and reduced waste generation from disposable batteries. They find applications in various fields, including healthcare, environmental monitoring, food safety, and wearable devices. While self-powered biosensors are a promising technology, there are still challenges to address, such as improving energy efficiency, sensitivity, and stability to make them more practical and widely adopted. This review article focuses on exploring the evolving trends in self-powered biosensor design, outlining potential advantages and limitations. With a focal point on enzymatic biofuel cell power generation, this article describes various sensing mechanisms that employ the analyte as substrate or fuel for the biocatalyst’s ability to generate current. Technical aspects of biofuel cells are also examined. Research and development in the field of self-powered biosensors is ongoing, and this review describes promising areas for further exploration within the field, identifying underexplored areas that could benefit from further investigation.

Pressure transducer 3/8-inch in size can be faired into surface

To measure fluid pressure with minimum disturbance to fluid flow, a miniature pressure transducer can be imbedded and faired into the test surface. Incorporated in the design are piezoresistive elements mounted on a diaphragm, which transform pressure strains into an electrical signal.

Temperature-controlled fluidic device A concept

Symmetrical fluidic device directly converts electrical signals to mechanical signals in the form of a fluid-flow parameter. This device eliminates or reduces effects of all undesirable parameters on the departure angle, leaving it a function of the controlled wall and jet temperatures.

Intruder detection system

Moving coil geophones are utilized to develop a small, rugged, battery operated system capable of detecting seismic disturbances caused by intruders. Seismic disturbances sensed by each geophone are converted into electrical signals, amplified, and transmitted to remote receiver which provides listener with aural signal.
