A number of hybrid methods for solving Cauchy problems are described on the basis of an evaluation of advantages of single and multiple-point numerical integration methods. The selection criterion is the principle of minimizing computer time. The methods discussed include the Nordsieck method, the Bulirsch-Stoer extrapolation method, and the method of recursive Taylor-Steffensen power series.

The purpose of this report is to establish linear, decoupled models of rigid body motion for the fixed wing configuration of the Rotor Systems Research Aircraft (RSRA). Longitudinal and lateral control surface fixed linear models were created from aircraft time histories using current system identification techniques. Models were obtained from computer simulation at 160 KCAS and 200 KCAS, and from flight data at 160 KCAS. Comparisons were performed to examine modeling accuracy, variation of dynamics with airspeed and correlation of simulation and flight data results. The results showed that the longitudinal and lateral linear models accurately predicted RSRA dynamics. The flight data results showed that no significant handling qualities problems were present in the RSRA fixed wing aircraft at the flight speed tested.
A four-dimensional analysis is applied to spectral nonlinear models of the atmosphere. The experiment reveals that the four-dimensional analysis errors are smaller than measurement errors, the method is stable in an assimilation cycle, and an accurate estimate of the velocity field is maintained using only temperature observations. It is concluded that the four-dimensional analyses display rapid initial error growth and therefore are better than ordinary forecasts from observations for only the first 24 hours.

For the design and the construction of airplanes the control is of special significance, not only with regard to the flight mechhnical properties but also for the proportional arrangement of wing unit, fuselage, and tail unit. whereas these problems may be regarded as solved for direct control of airplane motions, that is, for immediate operation of the control surfaces, they are not clarified as to oscimtions, stability, and stress phenomena occurring in flight motions with Indirect control, ss realized for instance in tab control. Its modus operandi is based on the activation of a tab hinged to the trailing edge & the main control surface. Due to lift and drag variations, mcments originate about the axis of rotation of the main contnol surface which cause an up-or--down floating of the main control surface and thus a change in the direction of the airplane. Since this tab control means flying with free control surface , the treatment of this problem should provide the basis on which to judge stability, oscilhtton, and stress data. The present report is to represent a contribution toward the clarification of the problems arising and, to treat the longitudinal motion of an airplane.
This Memorandum Report consists of a compilation of three individual reports, of increasing complexity, describing investigations of formation flight of spacecraft in the vicinity of the L2 Sun-Earth 1ibration point. The individual reports form the following parts of this compilation: - Introduction to the relative motion of spacecraft about the Sun-Earth L2 Point - Linear and quadratic modelling and solution of the relative motion - Modelling the Perturbations - Elliptical Earth Orbit, Lunar Gravity, Solar Radiation Pressure, Thrusters. The three parts are self-contained, with somewhat, varying notation and terminology. After fair1y significant literature searches: this new work (of Parts 2 and 3) is deemed to be unique because it describes the primary perturbations to the description of relative motion between nearby spacecraft. The effect of the elliptical motion of the Earth about the Sun was verified to be the dominant perturbation to the circular restricted three body problem. Contributions due to lunar gravity and solar radiation pressure are seen to have much smaller effect.
With the complexities in computing optimal low thrust trajectories, easily-computed, good sub-optimal trajectories provide both a practical alternative for mission designers and a starting point for optimisation. The present paper collects in one place for easy reference and comparison several exact solutions that have been obtained in the literature over the last few decades: the logarithmic spiral, Pinkham's variant thereof, Forbes spiral, the exponential sinusoid, the case of constant radial thrust, Markopoulos's Keplerian thrust arcs, Lawden's spiral, and the analogous Bishop and Azimov spiral.
