High-impact dynamic-response analysis of nonlinear structures

Program predicts expected deformations and stresses in nonlinear simple geometric structures subjected to high-impact loading. Technique is based on node-wise predictor-corrector approach and requires moderate computer storage and run time for most problems. Program extends to include physical and geometrical nonlinearities.

Dynamic response of nonuniform structures to classes of pressure fields

A semi-analytical method is developed for the calculation of the response of nonuniform structures to deterministic and random excitation. The method is based on parametric representations of the impulse response and input functions. With these representations, a class of structures of specified geometry and a class of pressure fields of practical concern can be considered simultaneously in a single analytical calculation of structural response. In engineering applications, the parameters in the impulse response function can be fixed once the numerical solution of the associated eigenvalue problem is available; the input function parameters can be specified given a particular input function or pressure field data. This methodology is applied to nonuniform beams and circular cylindrical shells for which parametric response solutions are derived. The computerized version of these solutions is also presented.

Dynamic response analysis of geometrically non-linear structures subjected to high impact.

Description of an efficient digital computer method for the determination of the propagation of elastic stresses and deformations in certain geometrically nonlinear structures subjected to high impact loading. The finite-element matrix displacement approach utilizing curved quadrilateral shell elements in conjunction with a nodewise predictor-corrector method employing Runge-Kutta extrapolation techniques has been adopted for the present solution. The related computer program written in FORTRAN V for the UNIVAC 1108 computer has proved to be effective for the solution of a range of practical problems including rectangular and cylindrical panels. Numerical results are presented for a relevant structure, the cell container, and the negative electrode of an impact-resistant battery subjected to high impact, simulating its free landing on a planetary surface.

A dynamic response and eye scanning data base useful in the development of theories and methods for the description of control/display relationships

A set of specially prepared digital tapes is reported which contain synchronized measurements of pilot scanning behavior, control response, and vehicle response obtained during instrument landing system approaches made in a fixed-base DC-8 transport simulator. The objective of the master tape is to provide a common data base which can be used by the research community to test theories, models, and methods for describing and analyzing control/display relations and interactions. The experimental conditions and tasks used to obtain the data and the detailed format of the tapes are described. Conventional instrument panel and controls were used, with simulated vertical gust and glide slope beam bend forcing functions. Continuous pilot eye fixations and scan traffic on the panel were measured. Both flight director and standard localizer/glide slope types of approaches were made, with both fixed and variable instrument range sensitivities.
