Methodology for physics-informed generation of synthetic neutron time-of-flight measurement data

Accurate neutron cross section data are a vital input to the simulation of nuclear systems for a wide range of applications from energy production to national security. The evaluation of experimental data is a key step in producing accurate cross sections. There is a widely recognized lack of reproducibility in the evaluation process due to its artisanal nature and therefore there is a call for improvement within the nuclear data community. This can be realized by automating/standardizing viable parts of the process, namely, parameter estimation by fitting theoretical models to experimental data. This automation effort could greatly benefit from a synthetic data resource. This work leverages problem-specific physics, Monte Carlo sampling, and a general methodology for data synthesis to generate unlimited, labelled experimental cross-section data that is statistically indistinguishable to the observed data. Heuristic and, where applicable, rigorous statistical comparisons to observed data support this claim. The demonstration is based on/limited to transmission measurements at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and energy-differential cross sections in the resolved resonance region (RRR). An open-source software is published alongside this article that executes the complete methodology to produce high-utility synthetic datasets. The goal of this work is to provide an approach and corresponding tool that will allow the evaluation community to begin exploring more data-driven, ML-based solutions to long-standing challenges in the field.

Measurement of cross sections for production of a $Z$ boson in association with a flavor-inclusive or doubly $b$-tagged large-radius jet in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ $\mathrm{TeV}$ with the ATLAS experiment

We present measurements of cross sections for production of a leptonically decaying $Z$ boson in association with a large-radius jet in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, using 36 fb –1 of data from the ATLAS detector. Integrated and differential cross sections are measured at particle level in both a flavor inclusive and a doubly $b$-tagged fiducial phase space. The large-radius jet mass and transverse momentum, its kinematic relationship to the Z boson, and the angular separation of $b$-tagged small-radius track jets within the large-radius jet are measured. This measurement constitutes an important test of perturbative quantum chromodynamics in kinematic and flavor configurations relevant to several Higgs boson and beyond-Standard-Model physics analyses. The results highlight issues with modeling of additional hadronic activity in the flavor-inclusive selection, and a distinction between flavor-number schemes in the $b$-tagged phase space.

Measurement of differential ZZ + jets production cross sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Diboson production in association with jets is studied in the fully leptonic final states, pp → (Z/γ$^{*}$)(Z/γ$^{*}$) + jets → 2ℓ2ℓ′ + jets, (ℓ, ℓ′ = e or μ) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Differential distributions and normalized differential cross sections are measured as a function of jet multiplicity, transverse momentum p$_{T}$, pseudorapidity η, invariant mass and ∆η of the highest-p$_{T}$ and second-highest-p$_{T}$ jets, and as a function of invariant mass of the four-lepton system for events with various jet multiplicities. These differential cross sections are compared with theoretical predictions that mostly agree with the experimental data. However, in a few regions we observe discrepancies between the predicted and measured values. Further improvement of the predictions is required to describe the ZZ+jets production in the whole phase space.

Inclusive cross section measurements in final states with and without protons for charged-current ν μ -Ar scattering in MicroBooNE

A detailed understanding of inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interactions on argon is crucial to the study of neutrino oscillations in current and future experiments using liquid argon time projection chambers. To that end, we report a comprehensive set of differential cross section measurements for this channel that simultaneously probe the leptonic and hadronic systems by dividing the channel into final states with and without protons. Measurements of the proton kinematics and proton multiplicity of the final state are also presented. For these measurements, we utilize data collected with the MicroBooNE detector from 6.4 × 10 20 protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam at a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. We present in detail the cross section extraction procedure, including the unfolding, and model validation that uses data to model comparisons and the conditional constraint formalism to detect mismodeling that may introduce biases to extracted cross sections that are larger than their uncertainties. The validation exposes insufficiencies in the overall model, motivating the inclusion of an additional data-driven reweighting systematic to ensure the accuracy of the unfolding. The extracted results are compared to a number of event generators and their performance is discussed with a focus on the regions of phase space that indicate the greatest need for modeling improvements. p +p - electroproduction off protons in deuterium: measurements of quasi-free cross sections and kinematic probing of final state interactions

In this study, the process of pi+pi- electroproduction off protons bound in deuterium nuclei is explored. The exploration is performed through the analysis of experimental data on electron scattering off the deuteron target, collected in Hall B at Jefferson Lab with the CLAS detector. As a main result, the set of integrated and single-differential cross sections of the reaction yvp(n) -> p'(n')pi+pi- is obtained. The cross sections are extracted in the quasi-free regime, which implies that only events not affected by final state interactions are subject to selection. The measurements are performed in the kinematic region of the invariant mass W from 1.3 GeV to 1.825 GeV and photon virtuality Q2 from 0.4 GeV2 to 1 GeV2. Sufficient experimental statistics allows narrow binning, i.e. 25 MeV in W and 0.05 GeV2 in Q2, while maintaining an adequate statistical uncertainty. The extraction of quasi-free cross sections is accompanied by the kinematic probing of FSI between the reaction final hadrons and the spectator neutron in the aforementioned exclusive channel. In this probing the distributions of missing quantities are used in order to investigate the relative spread of events with FSI along the reaction phase space, trace the difference of FSI manifestations in different reaction topologies, reveal details on alterations of the hadron momentum in FSI, and isolate FSI contributions of various final hadrons. The performed examination is also capable of retrieving information on some underlying FSI mechanisms, among which the process of resonance formation in the intermediate state of pion-neutron interactions is particularly remarkable.

Small-𝑥 gluon GPD constrained from deeply virtual 𝐽/𝜓 production and gluon PDF through universal-moment parametrization

We phenomenologically constrain the small-𝑥 and small-𝜉 gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) with the deeply virtual 𝐽/𝜓 production (DV⁢𝐽/𝜓⁢P) in the framework of GPDs through universal moment parameterization (GUMP). We use a hybrid cross-section formula combining collinear factorization to the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy of the strong coupling 𝛼 𝑠 , with corrections from nonrelativistic QCD to account for the power corrections due to the heavy 𝐽/𝜓 mass. We reach reasonable fit to the measured differential cross sections of DV⁢𝐽/𝜓⁢P by H1 at the Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator as well as forward gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) from JAM22 global analysis. We find that both NLO and nonrelativistic corrections are significant for heavy vector meson productions. Of course, the gluon GPD we obtain still contains considerable freedom in need of inputs from other constraints, particularly in the distribution-amplitude-like region.

DUNE and MINERvA Flux Studies and a Measurement of the Charged-Current Quasielastic Antineutrino Scattering Cross Section with $<E_{\nu}> \sim 6 $ GeV on a CH Target

One of the biggest open questions in physics is the prevalence of matter over anti-matter in the present universe. One of possible answers lies in the violation of charge and parity symmetry in the lepton sector that would favor matter over anti-matter so that the universe becomes dominated by matter over time. Recent results from neutrino experiments like T2K and NOvA have indicated that there is CP violation in the leptonic sector \citep{Abe:2019vii}. However, the precise measurement of CP violation will require an unprecedented level of accuracy in these oscillation experiments. One of the challenges lies with the systematic uncertainties that come with the measurements, which include uncertainties related to the neutrino flux modeling, interaction modeling and detector related systematic uncertainties.\\ The first part of this thesis will go through the challenges related to flux uncertainties. It will discuss the flux uncertainties related to hadron production in the LBN F beamli ne for the DUNE experiment. Hadron production models used in flux simulations vary widely depending on the simulation and choice of physics models used to simulate the hadron production. This thesis will explain the method of using existing hadron production data to constrain these uncertainties, a method which has been used in MINERvA experiment.\\ The second part of the thesis goes through the effect of possible flux mismodeling and MINERvA's approach to address this effect. In doing so, we discovered that the suspected mismodeling could also result from incorrect estimation of the energy scale of the muons. This project not only demonstrated the challenges of flux modeling but also led to a novel approach of using neutrino energy spectra to understand the correlation between detector and neutrino beamline parameters. \\ A high statistics measurement of the anti-neutrino scattering cross section in the charged current quasielastic (CCQE) channel is the final part of the th esis. Th e 2-body interactions in this channel have the advantage of allowing reconstruction of the interaction kinematics from the outgoing muon trajectory which can be measured very well. Double differential cross sections as a function of muon kinematics, one of the deliverables of this analysis, will help future oscillation experiments understand their data. The cross-section as a function of the four-momentum transferred from the leptonic system to the hadronic system ($Q^{2}_{QE}$) can be used to test models used in simulating antineutrino interactions and the nuclear effects that can modify the predicted cross sections. Nuclear effects arise from the complex nuclear environment and both modify the initial scattering and change the fate of the particles produced from in neutrino-nucleus interactions. Study of nuclear effects will help to understand the structure of the atomic nucleus and its impact on neutrino interactions.

Measurement of Neutral Current Elastic Cross Section in MicroBooNE

The MicroBooNE experiment is an 85 ton active volume liquid-argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beamline. MicroBooNE’s ability to detect low-energy protons allows us to study single proton events with a four-momentum transfer squared, Q$^2$, as low as 0.10 GeV$^2$. We present a measurement of the flux-averaged neutral-current elastic differential cross sections for neutrinos scattering on argon as a function of Q$^2$, proton momentum and proton angle with respect to the direction of the neutrino beam. This is our first step towards extracting the strange quark contribution to the axial form factor, which is not only the least-constrained contribution to the neutral-current elastic scattering cross section but is also crucial for understanding the strange quark contribution to the proton spin.

Bottom quark energy loss and hadronization with B + and ${\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0$ nuclear modification factors using pp and PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production cross sections of $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ and B$^{+}$ mesons are reported in proton-proton (pp) collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb$^{−1}$. The cross sections are based on measurements of the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $→ J/ψ(μ$^{+}$μ$^{−}$)ϕ(1020)(K$^{+}$K$^{−}$) and B$^{+}$→ J/ψ(μ$^{+}$μ$^{−}$)K$^{+}$ decay channels. Results are presented in the transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) range 7–50 GeV/c and the rapidity interval |y| < 2.4 for the B mesons. The measured p$_{T}$-differential cross sections of B$^{+}$ and $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ in pp collisions are well described by fixed-order plus next-to-leading logarithm perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Using previous PbPb collision measurements at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy, the nuclear modification factors, R$_{AA}$, of the B mesons are determined. For p$_{T}$> 10 GeV/c, both mesons are found to be suppressed in PbPb collisions (with R$_{AA}$ values significantly below unity), with less suppression observed for the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ mesons. In this p$_{T}$ range, the R$_{AA}$ values for the B$^{+}$ mesons are consistent with those for inclusive charged hadrons and D$^{0}$ mesons. Below 10 GeV/c, both B$^{+}$ and $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ are found to be less suppressed than either inclusive charged hadrons or D$^{0}$ mesons, with the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $R$_{AA}$ value consistent with unity. The R$_{AA}$ values found for the B$^{+}$ and $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ are compared to theoretical calculations, providing constraints on the mechanism of bottom quark energy loss and hadronization in the quark-gluon plasma, the hot and dense matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.

Measurement of muon neutrino induced charged current interactions without charged pions in the final state using a new T2K off-axis near detector WAGASCI-BabyMIND

We report a flux-integrated cross section measurement of muon neutrino interactions on water and hydrocarbon via charged current reactions without charged pions in the final state with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector, which was installed in the T2K near detector hall in 2018. The detector is located 1.5° off-axis and is exposed to a more energetic neutrino flux than ND280, another T2K near detector, which is located at a different off-axis position. The total flux-integrated cross section is measured to be 1.26 ± 0.18⁢(stat+syst) × 10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon on CH and 1.44 ± 0.21⁢(stat+syst) × 10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon on H 2 ⁡O. These results are compared to model predictions provided by the neut v5.3.2 and genie v2.8.0 Monte Carlo generators and the measurements are compatible with these models. Differential cross sections in muon momentum and cosine of the muon scattering angle are also reported. This is the first such measurement reported with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector and utilizes the 2020 and 2021 datasets.

Measurement of electron neutrino and antineutrino cross sections at low momentum transfer

Accelerator based neutrino oscillation experiments seek to measure the relative number of electron and muon (anti)neutrinos at different 𝐿/𝐸 values. However high statistics studies of neutrino interactions are almost exclusively measured using muon (anti)neutrinos since the dominant flavor of neutrinos produced by accelerator based beams are of the muon type. This work reports new measurements of electron (anti)neutrinos interactions in hydrocarbon, obtained by strongly suppressing backgrounds initiated by muon flavor (anti)neutrinos. Double differential cross sections as a function of visible energy transfer, 𝐸 avail , and transverse momentum transfer, 𝑝 𝑇 , or three momentum transfer, 𝑞 3 are presented.

Measurement of Charged Current Inclusive $\bar{V}_\mu$ Interactions and 2p2h Contribution Using the NOvA Near Detector

More precise measurements of the scattering of antineutrinos on nuclei in the few GeV region of incident energy, $E_{\nu}$, can reveal new aspects of $v/\bar{v}$ interactions and of nuclear structure, while providing information crucial to continued progress by neutrino oscillation experiments. This Thesis reports an investigation of charged current $\bar{v}_\mu$ interactions in the predominantly hydrocarbon medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The data are obtained with the detector exposed to a narrow-band $\bar{v}$ µ beam with spectral peak at E ν = 2.0 GeV, for a total accumulated exposure of 12.5×10$^{20}$ protons-on-target. The analysis expresses results in terms of three-momentum transfer,|$\vec{q}$| and available hadronic energy, $E$ avail . These variables approximate (q 0 , |$\vec{q}$|), the variables used in theoretical treatments of lepton scattering on multi-nucleon systems such as in 2-particle-2-hole (2p2h) processes. This Thesis delivers two core measurements: Firstly, the double-dierential cross section $d^2σ/d|\vec{q} |dE_{avail}$ for inclusive CC $\bar{v}_\mu$ interactions in the NOvA detector medium is obtained. The cross section has a roughly gaussian shape in its projection onto |$\vec{q}$|, while being largely concentrated at values of $E$ avail below 100 MeV. The single diferential cross sections dσ/d|$\vec{q}$| and dσ/dE avail are also obtained, and are compared to predictions based on the GENIE v3.0.6 neutrino generator augmented with four different implementations of 2p2h reactions. Secondly, the contribution of 2p2h reactions to the CC inclusive scattering sample is determined. Its presence is characterized in terms of double-differential and single-differential cross sections. The latter 2p2h distributions are compared to predictions from two experimental data-tune models and from two theory-based models, namely the SuSAv2 model and the Valencia model. Both of the theoretical models underpredict the measured cross-section strength and predict a shape for dσ/d|$\vec{q}$| that is flatter than the measured shape. Thus, this Thesis provides new information about CC antineutrino-nucleus scattering in the vicinity of Eν ~ 2 GeV, and it highlights improvements that are needed in theoretical treatments of 2p2h reactions.

Measurement of the Zγ production cross section and search for anomalous neutral triple gauge couplings in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

A measurement of the fiducial cross section of the associated production of a Z boson and a high-p$_{T}$ photon, where the Z decays to two neutrinos, and a search for anomalous triple gauge couplings are reported. The results are based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV during 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The fiducial Zγ cross section, where a photon with a p$_{T}$ greater than 225 GeV is produced in association with a Z, and the Z decays to a $ \upnu \overline{\upnu} $ pair $ \left(\mathrm{Z}\left(\upnu \overline{\upnu}\right)\upgamma \right) $, is measured to be $ {23.3}_{-1.3}^{+1.4} $ fb, in agreement, within uncertainties, with the standard model prediction. The differential cross section as a function of the photon p$_{T}$ has been measured and compared with standard model predictions computed at next-to-leading and at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Constraints have been placed on the presence of anomalous couplings that affect the ZZγ and Zγγ vertex using the p$_{T}$ spectrum of the photons. The observed 95% confidence level intervals for CP-conserving $ {h}_3^{\upgamma} $ and $ {h}_4^{\upgamma} $ are determined to be (−3.4, 3.5)×10$^{−4}$ and (−6.8, 6.8)×10$^{−7}$, and for $ {h}_3^{\mathrm{Z}} $ and $ {h}_4^{\mathrm{Z}} $ they are (−2.2, 2.2)×10$^{−4}$ and (−4.1, 4.2)×10$^{−7}$, respectively. These are the strictest limits to date on $ {h}_3^{\upgamma} $, $ {h}_3^{\mathrm{Z}} $ and $ {h}_4^{\mathrm{Z}} $.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Measurements of ${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross sections and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $

The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$, collected during 2016–2018. The ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross section, $\sigma _{\text {tot}} ({\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} ) = 17.4 \pm 0.3 \,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.5 \,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.4 \,\text {(theo)} \pm 0.3 \,\text {(lumi)} \text { pb} $, measured for events with two pairs of opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons produced in the mass region ${60< m_{\ell ^+\ell ^-} < 120\,\text {GeV}}$ is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are also measured and agree with theoretical predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ and ${{\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} \gamma }$ couplings.

Form-factor dependence of neutrino-nucleus cross sections using microscopic methods

To achieve its design goals, the next generation of neutrino-oscillation accelerator experiments requires percent-level predictions of neutrino-nucleus cross sections supplemented by robust estimates of the theoretical uncertainties involved. The latter arise from both approximations in solving the nuclear many-body problem and in the determination of the single- and few-nucleon quantities taken as input by many-body methods. To gauge the sensitivity of realistic nuclear many body methods to these few-nucleon quantities, we compute flux-averaged double-differential cross sections using the Green’s function Monte Carlo and spectral function methods as well as different parameterizations of the nucleon axial form factors based on either deuterium bubble-chamber data or lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations. The cross-section results are compared with available experimental data from the MiniBooNE and T2K collaborations. We also discuss the uncertainties associated with N → Δ transition form factors that enter the two-body current operator. We quantify the relations between neutrino-nucleus cross section and nucleon form factor uncertainties. These relations enable us to determine the form factor precision targets required to achieve a given cross-section precision.

Measurement of muon neutrino charged-current quasielasticlike cross section using off-axis NuMI beam at ICARUS

This paper presents the first neutrino cross-section measurement from the ICARUS detector at Fermilab, using Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam data collected from two beam operation periods corresponding to 2.5 × 10 20 protons-on-target in neutrino beam mode. The signal is defined by events with no pions produced in the final state, a topology dominated by charged-current quasielasticlike signatures. The measurement is reported as flux-averaged differential cross sections as functions of kinematic variables that provide sensitivity to the complex nuclear effects that often dominate the systematic uncertainty budgets of neutrino oscillation measurements. Specifically, this work reports cross sections in two angular variables—the angle of the outgoing lepton and the opening angle between the lepton and leading proton—and two variables characterizing the kinematic imbalance between the muon and proton in the plane transverse to the incoming neutrino. These results are compared against predictions from a variety of neutrino event generators, with p values calculated between the extracted cross sections and each prediction. Overall, the predictions agree with the data; however, the current budget of uncertainties does not yet provide sufficient discriminating power to favor a specific model.

Improving ProtoDUNE pion cross-section measurements with NuGraph Michel-electron tagging

Understanding hadron-argon interactions is essential for precise neutrino energy reconstruction and final-state interaction modeling in liquid-argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiments such as DUNE. In particular, pion absorption and charge-exchange processes constitute significant sources of systematic uncertainty in neutrino oscillation measurements. ProtoDUNE-SP, a large-scale LArTPC prototype operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform and exposed to charged-particle test beams in the few-GeV range, enables direct measurements of these processes. This work focuses on the measurement of differential cross sections for pion absorption and charge exchange using the 2 GeV/c pion beam data from the ProtoDUNE-SP run. A key component of this analysis is the identification of Michel electrons from $\pi \rightarrow \mu \rightarrow e$ decay chains, which helps separate different interaction topologies and improves background rejection. Michel electron identification will also assist in reliably calibrating the electromagnetic response in ProtoDUNE-SP data and for the future DUNE detectors. In this analysis, we apply NuGraph to identify Michel electrons. NuGraph is a graph neural network that models detector hits as nodes connected by spatial and temporal edges for particle and topology classification in LArTPC detectors. We first benchmark NuGraph’s Michel electron classification performance using ICEBERG data, a small-scale LArTPC prototype used for DUNE electronics and reconstruction development, and then transfer the approach to ProtoDUNE-SP. This poster presents the analysis strategy, NuGraph-based classification studies, and discusses how these developments are expected to improve the pion cross-section measurement.
