Laboratory studies of atomic collision processes of importance in planetary atmospheres

A series of differential cross sections for angular scattering and charge transfer was measured. These studies employ position-sensitive detectors (PSD's) to collect collision products scattered over a wide range of angles; and the research program includes investigation of differential cross sections for total angular scattering, charge transfer, stripping, and other collisions. All of these processes can be studied with the same basic apparatus, but minor modifications in the equipment details and in the data acquisition programs and techniques are required for each individual experiment.

Photoproduction of η mesons off the proton for 1.2 < E γ < 4.7GeV using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory

Photoproduction cross sections are reported for the reaction $\gamma p\to p\eta$ using energy-tagged photons and the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The $\eta$ mesons are detected in their dominant charged decay mode, $\eta\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$, and results on differential cross sections are presented for incident photon energies between 1.2 and 4.7 GeV. These new $\eta$ photoproduction data are consistent with earlier CLAS results but extend the energy range beyond the nucleon resonance region into the Regge regime. The normalized angular distributions are also compared with the experimental results from several other experiments, and with predictions of $\eta$ MAID\,2018 and the latest solution of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis. Differential cross sections $d\sigma/dt$ are presented for incident photon energies $E_\gamma > 2.9$ GeV ($W > 2.5$ GeV), and compared with predictions which are based on Regge trajectories exchange in the $t$-channel (Regge models). Overall, the data confirm the expected dominance of $\rho$, $\omega$ vector-meson exchange in an analysis by the Joint Physics Analysis Center.

Measurement of the central exclusive production of charged particle pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC

We report on the measurement of the Central Exclusive Production of charged particle pairs h+h- (h = π, K, p) with the STAR detector at RHIC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV. The charged particle pairs produced in the reaction pp → p' + h + h - + p' are reconstructed from the tracks in the central detector and identified using the specific energy loss and the time of flight method, while the forward-scattered protons are measured in the Roman Pot system. Exclusivity of the event is guaranteed by requiring the transverse momentum balance of all four final-state particles. Differential cross sections are measured as functions of observables related to the central hadronic final state and to the forward-scattered protons. They are measured in a fiducial region corresponding to the acceptance of the STAR detector and determined by the central particles’ transverse momenta and pseudorapidities as well as by the forward-scattered protons’ momenta. This fiducial region roughly corresponds to the square of the four-momentum transfers at the proton vertices in the range 0.04 GeV 2 < -t 1 , -t 2 < 0.2 GeV 2 , invariant masses of the charged particle pairs up to a few GeV and pseudorapidities of the centrally-produced hadrons in the range |η| < 0.7. The measured cross sections are compared to phenomenological predictions based on the Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) model. Structures observed in the mass spectra of π + π - and K + K - pairs are consistent with the DPE model, while angular distributions of pions suggest a dominant spin-0 contribution to π + π - production. For π + π - production, the fiducial cross section is extrapolated to the Lorentz-invariant region, which allows decomposition of the invariant mass spectrum into continuum and resonant contributions. The extrapolated cross section is well described by the continuum production and at least three resonances, the f 0 (980), f 2 (1270) and f 0 (1500), with a possible small contribution from the f 0 (1370). Fits to the extrapolated differential cross section as a function of t 1 and t 2 enable extraction of the exponential slope parameters in several bins of the invariant mass of π + π - pairs. These parameters are sensitive to the size of the interaction region.

Measurement of Charmonium Production in $p + p$ and $p + d$ Interactions in the Fermilab SeaQuest Experiment

The Fermilab SeaQuest experiment has measured dimuon events from the interactions of 120GeV proton beam on liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets with dimuon mass between 2 and 9GeV. These dimuon events contain both the Drell-Yan process and the charmonium ($J/\psi$ and $\psi^\prime$) production. Unlike the Drell-Yan process which probes the antiquark distributions in the nucleons, the charmonium production is sensitive to both quark and gluon distributions. SeaQuest has extracted the $\sigma^{pd}/2\sigma^{pp}$ ratio as well as the differential cross sections for charmonium production in the kinematic region of $0.4 < x_F < 0.9$. The $\sigma^{pd}/2\sigma^{pp}$ ratio for charmonium production are found to be significantly different from that of the Drell-Yan process. The measured differential cross sections for charmonium production are compared with theoretical calculations using Color Evaporation Model and Non-Relativistic QCD model.

High-Statistics Measurement of Neutrino Quasielasticlike Scattering at 6 GeV on a Hydrocarbon Target

We measure neutrino charged-current quasielasticlike scattering on hydrocarbon at high statistics using the wideband Neutrinos at the Main Injector beam with neutrino energy peaked at 6 GeV. The double-differential cross section is reported in terms of muon longitudinal ( p ∥ ) and transverse ( p ⊥ ) momentum. Cross section contours versus lepton momentum components are approximately described by a conventional generator-based simulation, however, discrepancies are observed for transverse momenta above 0.5 GeV / c for longitudinal momentum ranges 3–5 and 9 – 20 GeV / c . The single differential cross section versus momentum transfer squared ( d σ / d Q QE 2 ) is measured over a four-decade range of Q 2 that extends to 10 GeV 2 . The cross section turnover and falloff in the Q 2 range 0.3 – 10 GeV 2 is not fully reproduced by generator predictions that rely on dipole form factors. Our measurement probes the axial-vector content of the hadronic current and complements the electromagnetic form factor data obtained using electron-nucleon elastic scattering. These results help oscillation experiments because they probe the importance of various correlations and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus, which have different effects on the visible energy in detectors.

Toward virtual thin-beam 𝜈 cross-section measurements: A feasibility study of 𝜈-Ar interaction analysis with DUNE-PRISM

Neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements are critical for future neutrino oscillation analyses. However, our models to describe them require further refinement, and a deeper understanding of the underlying physics is essential for future neutrino oscillation experiments to realize their ambitious physics goals. Current neutrino cross section measurements provide clear deficiencies in neutrino interaction modeling, but almost all are reported averaged over broad neutrino fluxes, rendering their interpretation challenging. Using the concept of deep underground neutrino experiment-precision reaction independent spectrum measurement (DUNE-PRISM)—a movable near detector that samples multiple off axis positions—neutrino interaction measurements can be used to construct narrow virtual fluxes (less than 100 MeV wide). These fluxes can be used to extract charged-current neutrino-nucleus cross sections as functions of outgoing lepton kinematics within specific neutrino energy ranges. Based on a dedicated simulation with realistic event statistics and flux-related systematic uncertainties, but assuming an almost-perfect detector, we run a feasibility study demonstrating how DUNE-PRISM data can be used to measure muon neutrino charged-current integrated and differential cross sections over narrow fluxes. We find that this approach enables a largely model-independent reconstruction of powerful observables, including energy transfer, typically accessible only in electron scattering measurements, but that large exposures may be required for differential cross section measurements with few-percentage statistical uncertainties.

First Experimental Test of the Ratio Method

The ratio is a new reaction observable suggested to extract accurately structure information on halo nuclei. It corresponds to the ratio of differential cross sections for scattering and breakup, which is predicted to remove the uncertainty related to the reaction dynamics. We present here the first experimental test of the method for the 11 Be + 12 C collision at E Lab = 20A MeV performed at Texas A&M University. Differential cross sections for scattering and inclusive one-neutron breakup have been measured with the new detector array BlueSTEAl. The ratio of cross sections is very smooth and independent of the projectile-target interaction, which demonstrates the validity of the ratio method. We extend our analysis to existing 11 Be + 208 Pb data, confirming that the method works well on any target.

Measurement of the production cross section of pairs of isolated photons in pp collisions at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of prompt photon-pair production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events with two photons in the well-instrumented region of the detector are selected. The photons are required to be isolated and have a transverse momentum of p T, γ1(2) > 40 (30) GeV for the leading (sub-leading) photon. The differential cross sections as functions of several observables for the diphoton system are measured and compared with theoretical predictions from state-of-the-art Monte Carlo and fixed-order calculations. The QCD predictions from next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations and multi-leg merged calculations are able to describe the measured integrated and differential cross sections within uncertainties, whereas lower-order calculations show significant deviations, demonstrating that higher-order perturbative QCD corrections are crucial for this process. The resummed predictions with parton showers additionally provide an excellent description of the low transverse-momentum regime of the diphoton system.

Comparison of exact solution with Eikonal approximation for elastic heavy ion scattering

A first-order optical potential is used to calculate the total and absorption cross sections for nucleus-nucleus scattering. The differential cross section is calculated by using a partial-wave expansion of the Lippmann-Schwinger equation in momentum space. The results are compared with solutions in the Eikonal approximation for the equivalent potential and with experimental data in the energy range from 25A to 1000A MeV.

Measurement of charged-current muon neutrino-argon interactions without pions in the final state using the MicroBooNE detector

We report a new measurement of flux-integrated differential cross sections for charged-current (CC) muon neutrino interactions with argon nuclei that produce no final-state pions (𝜈 𝜇 ⁢CC⁢0⁢𝜋). These interactions are of particular importance as a topologically defined signal dominated by quasielasticlike interactions. This measurement was performed with the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber detector located at the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam and uses an exposure of 1.3 ×10 21 protons on target collected between 2015 and 2020. The results are presented in terms of single- and double-differential cross sections as a function of the final-state muon momentum and angle. The data are compared with widely used neutrino event generators. We find good agreement with the single-differential measurements, while only a subset of generators are also able to adequately describe the data in double-differential distributions. This work facilitates comparison with Cherenkov detector measurements, including those located at the Booster Neutrino Be

High Statistics Measurements of $ν_μ$ Charged-Current Single $π^{+}$ Production with Zero Pion Kinetic Energy Threshold in MINERvA

This Letter presents measurements of single-differential cross sections of $ν_μ$-induced charged-current 1 $π^{+}$ production on scintillator using the MINERvA detector at Fermilab. These measurements use traditional track-based pion reconstruction as well as pions identified solely via Michel electron decays, allowing measurement of kinetic energies from 0 to 350 MeV. In total, 91,843 events were selected with $W_{exp}$$<$ 1.4 GeV/c. Differential cross sections as a function of pion and muon kinematic variables are presented and compared with the predictions of several neutrino event generators. Overall, modern pion production models tend to agree with data at the ends of the kinematic regions probed, but are discrepant with the main regions of the phase space probed by up to 15% in muon observables and up to 20% in pion observables. No model describes any of the variables well, and this result highlights model areas that require improvement for the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments.

High-energy heavy-ion scattering and the optical phase shift function

Within the framework of the Glauber approximation, an exact expression for the optical phase shift function is derived which takes into account the center-of-mass correlation function. We calculate total and differential cross sections using the first-order term for the shift function and compare them with the usual (first-order) optical limit results and, for the lighter nuclei, with the exact Glauber results. The nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering amplitude does not exhibit the large-q divergence which characterizes the usual optical limit. The obtained results improve the calculated total and differential cross sections dramatically for light nuclei, and significantly for medium and heavy nuclei.

Impact of three-body forces on elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering observables

In a previous series of papers we investigated the domain of applicability of chiral potentials to the construction of a microscopic optical potential (OP) for elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering. The OP was derived at the first order of the spectator expansion of the Watson multiple scattering theory and its final expression was a folding integral between the nucleon-nucleon ( N N ) t matrix and the nuclear density of the target. In the calculations N N and three-nucleon ( 3 N ) chiral interactions were used for the target density and only the N N interaction for the N N t matrix. The purpose of this study is to achieve another step towards the calculation of a more consistent OP introducing the 3 N force also in the dynamic part of the OP. The full treatment of the 3 N interaction is beyond our present capabilities. Thus, here it is approximated with a density dependent N N interaction obtained after the averaging over the Fermi sphere. In practice, in our model the 3 N force acts as a medium correction of the bare N N interaction used to calculate the t matrix. Even if the 3 N force is treated in an approximate way, this method naturally extends our previous model of the OP and allows a direct comparison of our present and previous results. We consider as case studies the elastic scattering of nucleons off C 12 and O 16 . We present results for the differential cross section and the spin observables for different values of the projectile energy. From the comparison with the experimental data and with the results of our previous model we assess the importance of the 3 N interaction in the dynamic part of the OP. Conclusions: Our analysis indicates that the contribution of the 3 N force in the t matrix is small for the differential cross section and it is sizable for the spin observables, in particular, for the analyzing power. We find that the two-pion exchange term is the major contributor to the 3 N force. A chiral expansion order-by-order analysis of the scattering observables confirms the convergence of our results at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order, as already established in our previous work.

Compton scattering from He 4 at the TUNL HI γ S facility

Differential cross sections for elastic Compton scattering from 4 He have been measured with high statistical precision at the High Intensity γ-ray Source at laboratory scattering angles of 55°, 90°, and 125° using a quasi-monoenergetic photon beam with a weighted mean energy value of 81.3 MeV. The results are compared to previous measurements and similar fore-aft asymmetry in the angular distribution of the differential cross sections is observed. Lastly, this experimental work is expected to strongly motivate the development of effective-field-theory calculations of Compton scattering from 4 He to fully interpret the data.

Double differential distributions of e-emission in ionization of N 2 by 3,4 and 5 keV electron impact

In this paper, we report the measurement of the absolute double differential cross sections (DDCS) of secondary electrons emitted due to the ionization of N2 molecule in collisions with fast electrons having energies between 3 and 5 keV. The emitted electrons with energies from 1-500 eV have been measured for different forward and backward emission angles. The measured DDCS have been compared with the state-of-the-art first Born approximation with correct boundary condition (CB1) model calculations as well as with the classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method. From the measured DDCS, the single differential cross sections (SDCS) as a function of the emission energies have been computed and eventually the total ionization cross sections (TCS) have been derived. The TCS values are also compared with a semi-empirical calculation, namely, the CSP-ic (complex scattering potential-ionization contribution) model.

A two-parameter scintillation spectrometer system for measurement of secondary proton, deuteron, and triton distributions from materials under 558-MeV-proton irradiation

A two-parameter scintillation spectrometer system developed and used to obtain proton, deuteron, and triton double differential cross sections from materials under 558-MeV-proton irradiation is described. The system measures both the time of flight of secondary particles over a 488-cm flight path and the energy deposited in a scintillator, 12.7 cm in diameter and 30.48 cm long. The time resolution of the system is 0.39 nsec. The calculated energy resolution based on this time resolution varies with energy from 1.6 precent to 7.75 percent for 50- and 558-MeV protons. Various systematic and statistical errors are evaluated, and the double differential cross sections for secondary proton and deutron production at 20 deg from a 2.35 g/sq cm thick beryllium target are shown as an example of the results obtainable with this system. The uncertainly in the cross sections for secondary protons varies with particle energy from approximately + or - 9 percent at 50 MeV to approximately + or - 11 percent at 558 MeV.

Measurement of the mass dependence of the transverse momentum of lepton pairs in Drell–Yan production in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $

The double differential cross sections of the Drell–Yan lepton pair ($\ell^+\ell^-$, dielectron or dimuon) production are measured as functions of the invariant mass m$_{\ell\ell}$, transverse momentum p T ($\ell\ell$), and $\varphi^{*}_{\eta}$. The observable, derived from angular measurements of the leptons and highly correlated with p T ($\ell\ell$), is used to probe the low-p T region in a complementary way. Dilepton masses up to 1 TeV are investigated. Additionally, a measurement is performed requiring at least one jet in the final state. To benefit from partial cancellation of the systematic uncertainty, the ratios of the differential cross sections for various m$_{\ell\ell}$ ranges to those in the Z mass peak interval are presented. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb -1 of proton–proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Measurements are compared with predictions based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics, including soft-gluon resummation.

Polarized Structure Function {sigma}LT from {pi}0 p Electroproduction Data in the Resonance Region at 0.4 GeV2 < Q2 < 1.0 GeV2

The first results on the sigma(LT') structure function in exclusive pi(0)p electroproduction at invariant masses of the final state of 1.5 GeV < W < 1.8 GeV and in the range of photon virtualities 0.4 GeV2 < Q(2) < 1.0 GeV2 were obtained from data on beam spin asymmetries and differential cross sections measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The Legendre moments determined from the sigma(LT') structure function have demonstrated sensitivity to the contributions from the nucleon resonances in the second and third resonance regions. These new data on the beam spin asymmetries in pi(0)p electroproduction extend the opportunities for the extraction of the nucleon resonance electro-excitation amplitudes in the mass range above 1.6 GeV.
