Anomalous stability of non-van der Waals bonded B4C nanosheets through surface reconstruction

Boron carbide (B4C) has been well studied both theoretically and experimentally in its bulk form due to its exceptional hardness and use as a high-temperature thermoelectric. However, the properties of its two-dimensional nanosheets are not well established. In this paper, using van der Waals-corrected density-functional theory simulations, we show that bulk B4C can be cleaved along different directions to form B4C nanosheets with low formation energies. We find that there is minimal dependence of formation energies on cleavage planes and surface terminations, even though the bulk is not van der Waals layered. This anomalous stability of B4C nanosheets is found to be a result of surface reconstructions that are unique to B-rich systems. While the density of states of the bulk B4C indicate that it is a semiconductor, the B4C nanosheets are found to be predominantly metallic. We attribute this metallic behavior to a redistribution of charges on the surface bonds of the films. The Seebeck coefficients of the B4C films remain comparable to those of the bulk and are nearly constant as a function of temperature. Our results provide guidance for experimental synthesis efforts and future application of B4C nanosheets in nanoelectronic and thermoelectric applications.

Application of the van der Pauw method for electrical conductivity measurements at high temperatures using an insulating compressing ring

High quality data on the high temperature electrical properties of ceramics, particularly oxides, is of great value for material selection, design, and modeling for a broad range of emerging applications. Utilizing the mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion between two materials, a purely mechanical method for establishing electrical contact in the van der Pauw geometry to measure the bulk resistivity of ceramic disks at high temperatures is presented. Measurements of a reference material, 20 mol. % Gd-doped cerium oxide, are presented up to 1000 °C. The viability of electrical measurements up to a maximum temperature of 1600 °C is also considered. Measurements are performed using multiple techniques and compared to literature values finding excellent agreement. Finally, the approach described in this work enables the van der Pauw method to be applied to many ceramic materials over a wide range of temperatures and environments.

Magnetism and magnetoelastic effect in the two-dimensional van der Waals multiferroic CuCrP 2 ⁢S 6

Here, we report a magnetic and neutron diffraction study on the ground state magnetism and field evolution of single-crystal van der Waals multiferroic CuCrP 2 ⁢S 6 . The ordered moments align along the 𝑏 axis in the "𝐴-type" antiferromagnetic configuration with a spin-flop transition along the same direction. Field application along 𝑎 introduces a smooth transition to a fully polarized ferromagnetic state via in-plane spin rotation. These findings resolve the ambiguity of the ground state magnetization direction in CuCrP 2 ⁢S 6 and uncover its field responses, providing a firm basis for future magnetoelectric study. A magnetoelastic coupling effect connecting the interlayer spacing and the magnetic order was further revealed, highlighting the out-of-plane strain as an effective control knob for tuning magnetism both in this system and in related van der Waals magnets.

Two-dimensional ferromagnetic van der Waals CrCl 3 monolayer with enhanced anisotropy and Curie temperature

Among the recently widely studied van der Waals layered magnets Cr X 3 ( X = Cl, Br, I), CrCl 3 monolayer (ML) is particularly puzzling: it is shown by experiments to have only an in-plane magnetic easy axis and, furthermore, all previous first-principles calculation results contradict this. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we unveil that the in-plane shape anisotropy that dominates over the weak perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy is responsible for the in-plane magnetic easy axis of CrCl 3 ML. Further, to tune the in-plane ferromagnetism of CrCl 3 ML into the desirable perpendicular one, we propose substituting Cr with isovalent tungsten (W). We find that CrWCl 6 has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a high Curie temperature up to 76 K. Our work not only gives insight into understanding the two-dimensional ferromagnetism of van der Waals MLs but also sheds new light on engineering their performances for nanodevices.

Electronic structure of rhombohedral Cr X 3 ( X = Br, Cl, I) van der Waals crystals

We perform a comprehensive analysis of both the chemical and correlated electronic structure reconstruction of rhombohedral Cr X 3 (X = Br, Cl, I) van der Waals bulk crystals. Using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus dynamical mean-field theory we explicitly demonstrate the importance of local dynamical correlations for a consistent understanding of emergent Kondo quasiparticles and Mott localized electronic states, showing the interplay between material-dependent one-electron GGA line-shape and multiorbital electronic interactions. To probe the correlated paramagnetic electronic state we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements for CrCl 3 and CrBr 3 bulk crystals. Furthermore, our correlated many-body study is relevant to understanding the electronic structure reconstruction of paramagnetic Cr-trihalide crystals and should be widely applicable to other van der Waals magnetic materials.

Stacking Domain Wall Magnons in Twisted van der Waals Magnets

In this report using bilayer CrI 3 as an example, we demonstrate that stacking domain walls in van der Waals magnets can host one-dimensional (1D) magnon channels, which have lower energies than bulk magnons. Interestingly, some magnon channels are hidden in magnetically homogeneous background and can only be inferred with the knowledge of stacking domain walls. Compared to 1D magnons confined in magnetic domain walls, 1D magnons in stacking domain walls are more stable against external perturbations. We show that the relaxed moiré superlattices of small-angle twisted bilayer CrI 3 is a natural realization of stacking domain walls and host interconnected moiré magnon network. Our Letter reveals the importance of stacking domain walls in understanding magnetic properties of van der Waals magnets and extends the scope of stacking engineering to magnetic dynamics.

Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in an Insulating van der Waals Magnet

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have been a fertile playground for the discovery and exploration of physical phenomena and new physics. In this Letter, we report the observation of an anomalous thermal Hall effect (THE) with κ xy ~ 1 × 10 -2 WK -1 m -1 in an insulating van der Waals ferromagnet VI 3 . The thermal Hall signal persists in the absence of an external magnetic field and flips sign upon the switching of the magnetization. In combination with theoretical calculations, we show that VI 3 exhibits a dual nature of the THE, i.e., dominated by topological magnons hosted by the ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice at higher temperatures and by phonons induced by the magnon-phonon coupling at lower temperatures. Our results not only position VI 3 as the first ferromagnetic system to investigate both anomalous magnon and phonon THEs, but also render it as a potential platform for spintronics-magnonics applications.

Observation of van der Waals phonons in the single-layer cuprate ( Bi , Pb ) 2 ( Sr , La ) 2 CuO 6 + δ

Interlayer van der Waals (vdW) coupling is generic in two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, which can induce very low-energy phonon modes. Using high-resolution inelastic hard x-ray scattering, we uncover the ultralow energy phonon mode along the Cu-O bond direction in the high- T c cuprate (Bi,Pb) 2 (Sr,La) 2 ⁢CuO 6+$\delta$ (Bi2201). The energy and full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of these modes are independent of temperature, while their intensity decreases with doping in accordance with an increasing c -axis lattice parameter. Here, we compare the experimental results to first-principles density functional theory simulations and identify the observed mode as a van der Waals phonon, which arises from the shear motion of the adjacent Bi-O layers. This shows that Bi-based cuprate has vibrational properties similar to graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, which can be exploited to engineer novel heterostructures.

Enhancing the Survivability of Power Systems With Grid-Edge DERs Against DoS Attacks

Power system survivability, defined as the ability of a system to maintain steady-state functionality under varying operational conditions, reflects its resilience against disturbances. While existing research primarily focuses on physical-layer disturbances, the increasing prevalence of grid-edge DERs, which are primarily used for integrating renewable energy, has significantly expanded the cyber attack surface. As a result, operational disruptions caused by cyber threats are posing significant challenges to system survivability and cannot be overlooked. To fill this gap, we redefine system survivability to incorporate the cyber layer’s status and propose a Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO) approach to enhance power system survivability against potential cyber-physical threats. In this paper, we first analyze the operational guidelines of systems with a high penetration of DERs under various cyber network conditions and redefine survivability in this context. Next, we focus on the most common cyber threat, Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, and develop a corresponding attack model. This model allows for the creation of a kernel-based ambiguity set that captures attack uncertainties using historical data. Finally, we transform the proposed DRO model as a tractable optimization problem, with its solution providing an optimal cyber redundancy plan to enhance system survivability in DoS attack scenarios. Simulation results on the IEEE 13-node and 123-node test feeders demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model in improving system survivability. This model can also be expanded to include other types of common attacks and serve as a comprehensive planning tool to improve overall cyber physical survival of the system.

Sequential Perturbation-based FDIA Detection using DERs for Unbalanced Distribution System

The power distribution system with its reliance on automated monitoring and control infrastructure makes it a complicated cyber-physical system and vulnerable to various cyber-attacks. This paper proposes a moving target defense inspired false data injection attack (FDIA) detection mechanism for an unbalanced distribution system. In the proposed grid diagnosis service framework, the distribution system operator judiciously manipulates power outputs of a subset of inverter-based distribution energy resources (DERs) to create secret low magnitude voltage perturbations which are inconsequential to the normal operation of the grid. A mixed-integer-linear-programming algorithm is developed to select the optimal set of DERs that can create a voltage perturbation signal of the required magnitude at each sensor location at a minimum cost. Then, a sequential detector is applied that detects for the FDIA as measurements are received from individual sensors. The performance of the proposed perturbation-based FDIA detection framework is demonstrated via simulation of the IEEE 123 bus test system.

A Hybrid Data-Driven and Model-Based Anomaly Detection Scheme for DER Operation

This paper proposes a hybrid data and model-based anomaly detection scheme to secure the operation of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution grids. Data-driven autoencoders are set up at the edge device level and they use local DER operational data as inputs. The abnormal statuses are detected by analyzing reconstruction errors. In parallel, modelbased state estimation (SE) is set up at the central level and it uses system-wide models and measurements as data inputs. The anomalies are identified by analyzing measurement residuals. The hybrid scheme preserves the benefits of both data-driven and model-based analyses and thus improves the robustness and the accuracy of anomaly detection. Numerical tests based on the model of a real distribution feeder in Southern California highlight the proposed scheme's effectiveness and benefits.

Netload Range Cost Curves for Coordinated Transmission-Distribution Planning Under DER Growth Uncertainty

The increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) requires better coordination between transmission and distribution (T&D) planning to ensure system security and cost efficiency. However, misaligned planning horizons, computational burdens, and privacy concerns hinder effective coordination, leading to either underutilized resources caused by overinvestments or reliability risks due to underinvestment. To address this challenge, we introduce netload range cost curves (NRCCs), a novel approach for managing long-term DER growth uncertainty through T&D coordination, while preserving existing data-sharing and regulatory structures. NRCCs provide pairs of (i) peak substation netload guarantees and (ii) corresponding distribution upgrade options and costs, enabling their seamless integration into transmission planning workflows. To compute NRCCs efficiently, we develop a transmission-aware distribution network planning (TADNP), which is subsequently integrated to an iterative computation procedure. These NRCCs are then embedded into an NRCC-informed transmission planning model to enable resource-efficient coordination. We illustrate our proposed approach with a case study based on realistic distribution and transmission systems in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Our results indicate the possibility of dramatic savings in transmission investments by incorporating the proposed NRCC-integrated T&D coordination framework.

Unbundling Smart Meter Services Through Spatio-Temporal Decomposition Agents in DER-rich Environment

Smart meters and the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) facilitate distribution system operators (DSOs) to gather information on energy consumption at the customer level. With the increasing penetration of building-level intermittent distributed energy resources (DERs) behind the meter, DER information is not available to DSOs. At the same time, smart meter enables users to participate in grid, with real-time information. Information for behind the meter is needed by user to coordinate building level assets for maximum benefits. The concept of unbundled smart meter (USM) needs agents to decompose smart meter measurements to provide service to DSO as well as customers. In this paper, we propose a Spatio-Temporal Decomposition Agent (STDA) for USM based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). STDA can help users optimize their energy usage, help DSO to utilize building assets for the grid operation. The energy usage strategy developed by STDA is suitable for different users, and can be customized by deep learning (DL) models according to the different energy consumption habits of each user. The power prediction performance results of various DL models and evaluation using a set of data from a Hawaii utility is presented. Furthermore, STDA integration with Home Energy management Systems (HEMS) to manage resources is presented and validated. STDA pre-processes the measurements before model training, and provides the spatio-temporal decomposed forecasting.

Online Model-Free DER Dispatch Via Adaptive Voltage Sensitivity Estimation and Chance Constrained Programming

This paper proposes an online data-driven distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) for distribution system optimal DER dispatch as well as voltage regulation. Here, the key innovation is to leverage the Local Sensitivity Factor (LSF) for transforming the DER control into a computationally efficient linear programming (LP) problem. By taking real-time measurements, the estimation of LSF eliminates the need for an accurate distribution system model as well as full nodal load information, which is difficult to achieve in practice. A robust recursive least squares method is also developed to ensure the robust estimation of LSF, which is initialized using reasonable values from model-derived LSFs. This allows the system to adapt to changing operational conditions effectively. A scenario-based, chance-constrained framework is further employed to ensure voltage remains within acceptable limits in the presence of measurement and estimation uncertainties. Test results on a real-world, 759-node distribution network located in western Colorado, U.S., validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control approach and demonstrate its superior performance as compared to alternative methods.

Adaptive Deep Reinforcement Learning Algorithm for Distribution System Cyber Attack Defense With High Penetration of DERs

With grid modernization, smart inverters are increasingly used to execute advanced controls for distribution network reliability. However, this also increases the cyber-attack space. Here this paper focuses on the defense approaches to restore the system to normal operation circumstances in the presence of cyber-attacks. A unique deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method is developed to minimize voltage violations and reduce power losses for impacted feeders. The defense problem is reformulated as a Markov decision-making process to dynamically control DERs while minimizing load shedding. This is achieved via an improved soft actor-critic (SAC)-based DRL algorithm, which can govern DER set points and load-shedding scenarios in discrete and continuous modes via the auto-tune entropy and Gaussian policy features. Numerical comparison results on the modified IEEE 123-node system with other control approaches, such as Volt-VAR (VV), Volt-Watt (VW), and model predictive control (MPC) show that the proposed method can eliminate voltage violations and provide feasible control actions that perform complete mitigation of cyber-threats.

Distribution System Blackstart and Restoration Using DERs and Dynamically Formed Microgrids

Extreme weather events have led to long-duration outages in the distribution system (DS), necessitating novel approaches to blackstart and restore the system. Existing blackstart solutions utilize blackstart units to establish multiple microgrids (MGs), sequentially energize non-blackstart units, and restore loads. However, these approaches often result in isolated MGs. In DERs-aided blackstart, the continuous operation of these MGs is limited by the finite energy capacity of commonly used blackstart units like battery energy storage (BES)-based gridforming inverters (GFMIs). To address this issue, this article proposes a holistic blackstart and restoration framework that incorporates synchronization between dynamic MGs and the entire DS with the transmission grid (TG). To support synchronization, we leveraged virtual synchronous generator-based control for GFMIs to estimate their frequency response to load pick-up events using only initial/final quasi-steady-state points. Subsequently, a synchronization switching condition is developed to model synchronizing switches, aligning them seamlessly with a linearized branch flow problem. Finally, we designed a bottomup blackstart and restoration framework that considers the switching structure of the DS, energizing/synchronizing switches, DERs with grid-following inverters, and BES-based GFMIs with frequency security constraints. In conclusion, the proposed framework is validated in IEEE-123-bus system, considering cases with two and four GFMIs under various TG recovery instants.

Treatment and aging studies of GaAs(111)B substrates for van der Waals chalcogenide film growth

GaAs(111)B are commercially available substrates widely used for the growth of van der Waals chalcogenide films. Wafer-scale, high-quality crystalline films can be deposited on GaAs(111)B substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. However, two obstacles persist in the use of GaAs(111)B: first, the surface dangling bonds make it challenging for the growth of van der Waals materials; second, the As-terminated surface is prone to aging in air. This study investigated a thermal treatment method for deoxidizing GaAs(111)B substrates while simultaneously passivating the surface dangling bonds with Se. By optimizing the treatment parameters, we obtained a flat and completely deoxidized platform for subsequent film growth, with highly reproducible operations. Furthermore, through first-principle calculations, we find that the most energetically favorable surface of GaAs(111)B after Se passivation consists of 25% As atoms and 75% Se atoms. Finally, we discovered that the common storage method using food-grade vacuum packaging cannot completely prevent substrate aging, and even after thermal treatment, aging still affects subsequent growth. Therefore, we recommend using N2-purged containers for better preservation.
