Time-Temperature-Precipitation Behavior in Al-Li Alloy 2195

Transmission electron microscopy was used to study time-temperature-precipitation (TTP) behavior in aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) 2195 alloy. Al-Li 2195 (nominally Al + 4 percent Cu + 1 percent Li + 0.3 percent Ag + 0.3 percent Mg + 0.1 percent Zr) was initially solutionized for 1 hr at 950 F and then stretched 3 percent. Heat treatments were conducted for up to 100 hr at temperatures ranging from 200 to 1,000 F. TTP diagrams were determined for both matrix and subgrain boundaries. Depending upon heat treatment conditions, precipitate phases (such as GP zone, theta'', theta', theta, delta', T1, TB, and T2) were found in the alloy. The TTP diagrams were applied as a guide to avoid T1 precipitation at subgrain boundaries, as part of an effort to improve the alloy's cryogenic fracture toughness (CFT). New understanding of TTP behavior was instrumental in the development of a two-step artificial aging treatment that significantly enhanced CFT in Al-Li 2195.

Production of synthesis gas from natural gas with copper—iron—manganese oxide oxygen carriers/catalysts via partial oxidation and dry reforming processes

Materials, methods of making, and methods of providing a trimetallic oxygen carrier for converting methane containing fuel to synthesis gas. The trimetallic oxygen carrier comprises CuxFeyMnzOt, where CuxFeyMnzOt is a chemical composition with 0 < x ≤ 3 and 0 < y ≤ 3 and 0 < z ≤ 3 and, 0 < t ≤ 5. For example, CuxFeyMnzOt may be one of CuMnFeO 4 , CuFe 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 , CuFeMn 2 O 4 , CuFe 2 MnO 4 , or Cu impregnated on FerMnsOu, Fe impregnated on CurMnsOu, Mn impregnated on CurFesOu where r > 0, s > 0 and u > 0 and combinations thereof. Reaction of trimetallic CuxFeyMnzOt with methane generates a product stream comprising at least 50 vol. % CO and H 2 .

Evaluation of the microstructure of Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg Weldalite (tm) alloys, part 4

Weldalite (trademark) 049 is an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy designed to have ultrahigh strength and to serve in aerospace applications. The alloy displays significantly higher strength than competitive alloys in both naturally aged and artificially aged tempers. The strengthening phases in such tempers have been identified to, in part, explain the mechanical properties attained. In general, the alloy is strengthened by delta prime Al3Li and Guinier-Preston (GP) zones in the naturally aged tempers. In artificially aged tempers in slightly underaged conditions, strengthening is provided by several phases including GP zones, theta prime Al2Cu, S prime Al2CuMg, T(sub 1) Al2CuLi, and possibly a new phase. In the peak strength artificially aged tempers, T(sub 1) is the predominant strengthening phase.

Synthesis, transport properties and electronic structure of p-type Cu 1+x Mn 2–x InTe 4 ( x = 0, 0.2, 0.3)

The synthesis, electronic structure and temperature dependent transport properties of polycrystalline Cu 1+x Mn 2–x InTe 4 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3) are reported for the first time. These quaternary chalcogenides were synthesized by direct reaction of the elements, followed by solid state annealing and hot press densification. The thermal conductivity is low for all specimens and intrinsic to the material system. Furthermore, the off-stoichiometry specimens illustrate the sensitivity of the transport properties to stoichiometry, with a greater than two-orders-of magnitude increase in carrier concentration with increased Cu content. First principles calculations of the electronic structure are also reported, and are in agreement with the experimental data. Here, this fundamental investigation shows the potential towards further optimization of the electrical properties that, in addition to the intrinsically low thermal conductivity, provides a basis for further research into the viability of this material system for potential energy-related applications.

Topological effects on separation of alkane isomers in metal–organic frameworks

Polymorphism in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) means that the same chemical building blocks (nodes and linkers) can be used to construct isomeric MOFs with different topological networks. The choice of topology can substantially impact the pore network of the MOF, changing the sizes and shapes of the pores, which has implications for adsorption and separation applications. Here, we look at the influence of topology in 38 polymorphic MOFs on the separation of linear and branched C4–C6 alkane isomers, a separation of great importance to the petrochemical industry. We find that the MOF Cu 2 (1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) in nbo topology (nbo-Cu 2 BDC) has particularly high affinity for linear alkanes due to its small pore size, which excludes the branched isomers. Upon studying this MOF in further detail, we find that it can take either of two conformations: a cubic conformation, which is typical of nbo MOFs, and a unique star conformation that contains 1D triangular and hexagonal channels. The determination of which conformation the MOF will adopt depends on steric effects between the nodes and linkers.

Alkali element (Li, Na, K, and Rb) doping of Cu 2 BaGe 1– x Sn x Se 4 films

Cu 2 BaGe 1–x Sn x Se 4 (CBGTSe) represents an exemplary system within the I 2 –II–IV–X 4 (I = Ag, Cu; II = Sr, Ba; IV = Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) family, which has been introduced to target suppressing the formation of anti-site defects and associated defect clusters within the analogous kesterite Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 . Previous studies on CBGTSe films showed relatively low hole carrier densities (<10 13 cm –3 ), which may limit their corresponding application as active layers within photovoltaic, thermoelectric, and optoelectronic devices. In the current study, we explore the incorporation of alkali elements (Li, Na, K, and Rb) into CBGTSe films as prospective dopants to address the low hole carrier density and to allow for property tunability. First, incorporation of Na-, K-, and Rb-dopants noticeably increases the average grain sizes for CBGTSe films, while the Li-dopant has relatively limited impact. In addition, the alkali-dopants lead to a 1 to 3 orders of magnitude increase in hole carrier density (up to 10 15 cm –3 is achieved using K doping, corresponding to the alkali element yielding the highest doping efficiency). Here, the alkali-doped films show slightly lower minority carrier lifetimes and carrier mobility values than the non-doped samples, and these values are found to follow an approximate universal dependence with carrier density (also considering data derived from other previously explored vacuum-deposited I 2 –II–IV–X 4 chalcogenide films). As alkali-doping can significantly increase carrier densities, alkali elements can be considered useful p-type dopants for CBGTSe, as well as prospectively for other analogous I 2 –II–IV–X 4 systems.

Steering the Methane Dry Reforming Reactivity of Ni/La 2 O 3 Catalysts by Controlled In Situ Decomposition of Doped La 2 NiO 4 Precursor Structures

The influence of A- and/or B-site doping of Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite materials on the crystal structure, stability, and dry reforming of methane (DRM) reactivity of specific A 2 BO 4 phases (A = La, Ba; B = Cu, Ni) has been evaluated by a combination of catalytic experiments, in situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and aberration-corrected electron microscopy. At room temperature, B-site doping of La 2 NiO 4 with Cu stabilizes the orthorhombic structure ( Fmmm ) of the perovskite, while A-site doping with Ba yields a tetragonal space group ( I 4/ mmm ). We observed the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transformation above 170 °C for La 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 and La 2 Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 4 , slightly higher than for undoped La 2 NiO 4 . Loss of oxygen in interstitial sites of the tetragonal structure causes further structure transformations for all samples before decomposition in the temperature range of 400 °C-600 °C. Controlled in situ decomposition of the parent or A/B-site doped perovskite structures in a DRM mixture (CH 4 :CO 2 = 1:1) in all cases yields an active phase consisting of exsolved nanocrystalline metallic Ni particles in contact with hexagonal La 2 O 3 and a mixture of (oxy)carbonate phases (hexagonal and monoclinic La 2 O 2 CO 3 , BaCO 3 ). Differences in the catalytic activity evolve because of (i) the in situ formation of Ni-Cu alloy phases (in a composition of >7:1 = Ni:Cu) for La 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 , La 2 Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 4 , and La 1.8 Ba 0.2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 , (ii) the resulting Ni particle size and amount of exsolved Ni, and (iii) the inherently different reactivity of the present (oxy)carbonate species. Based on the onset temperature of catalytic DRM activity, the latter decreases in the order of La 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 ~ La 2 Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 4 ≥ La 1.8 Ba 0.2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 > La 2 NiO 4 > La 1.8 Ba 0.2 NiO 4 . Simple A-site doped La 1.8 Ba 0.2 NiO 4 is essentially DRM inactive. The Ni particle size can be efficiently influenced by introducing Ba into the A site of the respective Ruddlesden-Popper structures, allowing us to control the Ni particle size between 10 nm and 30 nm both for simple B-site and A-site doped structures. Hence, it is possible to steer both the extent of the metal-oxide-(oxy)carbonate interface and its chemical composition and reactivity. Counteracting the limitation of the larger Ni particle size, the activity can, however, be improved by additional Cu-doping on the B-site, enhancing the carbon reactivity. Exemplified for the La 2 NiO 4 based systems, we show how the delicate antagonistic balance of doping with Cu (rendering the La 2 NiO 4 structure less stable and suppressing coking by efficiently removing surface carbon) and Ba (rendering the La 2 NiO 4 structure more stable and forming unreactive surface or interfacial carbonates) can be used to tailor prospective DRM-active catalysts.

The transition from columnar to equiaxed dendritic growth in proeutectic, low-volume fraction copper, Pb-Cu alloys

Lead, 17.1, 11.2, and 5 volume fraction copper (14, 9, and 4 wt pct Cu) alloys have been directionally solidified at constant growth velocities ranging from 1 to 100 microns/s. Serially increasing the growth velocity within this range results in a graded microstructural transition from fully columnar, albeit segregated, copper dendrites in a lead matrix to one consisting only of equiaxed grains. The imposed velocity necessary to effect fully equiaxed growth is found to drop rapidly as the volume fraction of copper is decreased. Factors which complicate the controlled, directional solidification of these alloys are discussed and the experimental results are interpreted in view of, and seen to be in qualitative agreement with, Hunt's theory on the transition from columnar to equiaxed growth of dendrites.

Modified bornite materials with high electrochemical performance for sodium and lithium storage

Mineral-based functional materials have attracted enormous attention due to the advantages of high production, good material consistency, environmental friendliness, and low cost. However, the efficient utilization of natural minerals for high-performance energy storage is rarely reported. Here, we demonstrate a mineral-derived anode material Cu 5 FeS 4 coated with carbon for both sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries. The findings show that ball milling bornite in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone followed by optimal-temperature carbonization results in S, N-codoped Cu 5 FeS 4 particles with the desired surface properties, enhanced electronic conductivity, and abundant active sites that deliver high reversible capacity and maintain superior long-term cycling performance at a high current density of 2.0 A g –1 . This work sheds light on potential energy storage use cases for naturally abundant mineral-based materials.

Slow Electron Spin Relaxation at Ambient Temperatures with Copper Coordinated by a Rigid Macrocyclic Ligand

Paramagnetic transition metal complexes can serve as quantum bits, storing phase information through unpaired electrons. Despite their promise, these systems often require low temperatures and tend to rapidly decohere. Recent efforts have sought to improve longitudinal relaxation (T 1 ), which provides an upper limit for phase coherence (T m ), by investigating existing literature compounds with reduced vibrational coupling and orbital angular momentum. However, synthetic strategies for improving T 1 through novel ligand design have remained scant. Here, we disclose the synthesis of a new modular macrocyclic ligand framework with four nitrogen donors (N 4 ) derived from phenanthroline that supports room-temperature coherent Cu(II) spin centers. The optimized complex more than doubles the T 1 over the next best Cu(II)-N 4 compound and exhibits a room temperature coherence time (T m ) of 0.28 μs, close to previously reported values. This performance enhancement arises from a tight binding site with short Cu–N distances, resulting in a stronger ligand field and reduced thermal accessibility of symmetric vibrational modes. This work demonstrates a practical approach to enabling spin coherence at room temperature, a factor critical to accessing relevant quantum bits and biological sensors, through a designer macrocyclic ligand platform.

Dual-atom active sites embedded in two-dimensional C 2 N for efficient CO 2 electroreduction: A computational study

Double-atom catalysts (DACs) have emerged as an enhanced platform of single-atom catalyst for promoting electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Herein, we present a density-functional theory study on CO 2 RR performance of seven C 2 N-supported homo- and heteronuclear DACs, denoted as M 2 @C 2 N. Our results demonstrate that there exists substantial synergistic effect of dual-metal-atom N 2 M 2 N 2 active site and C 2 N matrix on O&#x2550 C &#x2550O bond activation. The dual-atom M 2 sites are able to drive CO 2 RR beyond C 1 products with low limiting potential (U L ). Specifically, C 2 H 4 formation is preferred on FeM@C 2 N (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) versus CH 4 formation on CuM@C 2 N (M = Co, Ni, Cu). Furthermore, *CO+*CO co-binding strength can serve as a descriptor for CO 2 RR activity for making C 2 products such that the moderate binding results in the lowest U L . Remarkably, C-affinity matters most to C—C bond coupling and C 2 H 4 formation while both C- and O-affinity control CH 4 formation. Furthermore, our results provide theoretical insight into rational design of DACs for efficient CO 2 RR.

Insights into Nucleation and Growth of Colloidal Quaternary Nanocrystals by Multimodal X-ray Analysis

Copper chalcogenide nanocrystals find applications in photovoltaic inks, bio labels, and thermoelectric materials. We reveal insights in the nucleation and growth during synthesis of anisotropic Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 nanocrystals by simultaneously performing in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Real-time XAFS reveals that upon thiol injection into the reaction flask, a key copper thiolate intermediate species is formed within fractions of seconds, which decomposes further within a narrow temperature and time window to form copper sulfide nanocrystals. These nanocrystals convert into Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 nanorods by sequentially incorporating Sn and Zn. Real-time SAXS and ex situ TEM of aliquots corroborate these findings. Our work demonstrates how combined in situ X-ray absorption and small-angle X-ray scattering enables the understanding of mechanistic pathways in colloidal nanocrystal formation.

Optoelectronic Characterization of Emerging Solar Absorber Cu3AsS4

Enargite Cu 3 AsS 4 is a promising absorber for thin-film solar cells but little is known about its optoelectronic properties. Here, we present photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy (TRTS), timeresolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements of enargite thin films. The results indicate promising defect characteristics with minority carrier lifetimes on the order of ns, and band alignments suggest that buffer layers besides CdS must be developed to achieve high efficiency Cu 3 AsS 4 solar cells.

Magnetosynthesis Effect on the Structure and Ground State of Cu 2+ -Based Antiferromagnets

Synthetic variables can have an outsized influence on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of a material, particularly those of quantum materials. In this work, we investigate the impact of synthesis under a magnetic field (magnetosynthesis) on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of several Cu 2+ (S = 1/2)-based materials with antiferromagnetic interactions and varying levels of magnetic frustration, from simple antiferromagnets to a quantum spin liquid. Here, we develop methods to apply small (0.09–0.37 T) magnetic fields during low-temperature hydrothermal, evaporative, and rehydration syntheses of the simple antiferromagnet CuCl 2 ·2H 2 O, the canted antiferromagnet (Cu,Zn) 3 Cl 4 (OH) 2 ·2H 2 O, the frustrated and canted antiferromagnet atacamite Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl, and the highly frustrated quantum spin liquid herbertsmithite Cu 3 Zn(OH) 6 Cl 2 . We report the first single-crystal X-ray structural determination of the Cu 3 Cl 4 (OH) 2 ·2H 2 O structure type and probe the stability of this phase both experimentally and computationally. Atacamite Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl synthesized under a 0.19 T field experiences a 0.15 K (∼3%) decrease in its Néel transition temperature. This result suggests that magnetosynthesis with small applied fields may have a very subtle influence upon the magnetic properties of moderately magnetically frustrated 3 d materials.
