Direct Insertion Polymerization of Ionic Monomers: Rapid Production of Anion Exchange Membranes

The limited number of methods to directly polymerize ionic monomers currently hinders rapid diversification and production of ionic polymeric materials, namely anion exchange membranes (AEMs) which are essential components in emerging alkaline fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies. Herein, we report a direct coordination-insertion polymerization of cationic monomers, providing the first direct synthesis of aliphatic polymers with high ion incorporations and allowing facile access to a broad range of materials. We demonstrate the utility of this method by rapidly generating a library of solution processable ionic polymers for use as AEMs. We investigate these materials to study the influence of cation identity on hydroxide conductivity and stability. Furthermore, we found that AEMs with piperidinium cations exhibited the highest performance, with high alkaline stability, hydroxide conductivity of 87 mS cm –1 at 80 °C, and a peak power density of 730 mW cm –2 when integrated into a fuel cell device.

Enzymatic synthesis of kraft lignin-acrylate copolymers using an alkaline tolerant laccase

Abstract Softwood kraft lignin is a major bioresource relevant to the production of sustainable bio-based products. Continued challenges to lignin valorization, however, include poor solubility in organic solvents and in aqueous solutions at neutral pH. Herein, an alkaline tolerant laccase was used to graft acrylate functionalities onto softwood kraft lignin, which is expected to enhance the reactivity of lignin with isocyanate when producing bio-based polyurethanes. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography were used to confirm successful grafting of the acrylate monomer onto lignin and verify the importance of including tert-butyl hydroperoxide as an initiator in the grafting reaction. Laccase-mediated grafting of softwood kraft lignin under alkaline conditions produced lignin products with approximately 30% higher hydroxyl value and higher reactivity toward isocyanate. The reported enzymatic and aqueous process presents an opportunity for the sustainable valorization of softwood kraft lignin. Key points • Softwood kraft lignin displayed high phenolic hydroxyl content, polydispersity index and average molecular weight • Grafting hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) monomer onto kraft lignin by laccase was successful at 60 °C and alkaline conditions • Lignin-HEA grafted copolymer showed an increase in total OH value and an increase in average molecular weight

Simple Monomers for Precise Polymer Functionalization During Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Controlling the monomer sequence of synthetic polymers is a grand challenge in polymer science. Conventional sequence control has been achieved in dispersed polymers by exploiting the kinetic tendencies of monomers and their order of addition. While the sequence of blocks in multiblock copolymers can be readily tuned using sequential addition of monomers (SAM), control over the sequence distribution is eroded as the targeted block size approaches a single monomer unit (i.e., X n ~ 1) due to the stochastic nature of chain-growth reactions. Thus, unique monomers are needed to ensure precise single additions. Herein, we investigate common classes of cyclic olefin monomers for ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to identify monomers for single unit addition during sequential monomer addition synthesis. Through careful analysis of polymerization kinetics, we find that easily synthesized oxanorbornene imide monomers are suitable for single-addition reactions. With the identified monomers, we demonstrate the synthesis of multiblock copolymers containing up to three precise functionalization sites and singly cross-linked four-armed star copolymers. In conclusion, we envision that expanded kinetic analyses of monomer reactivities in ROMP reactions will enable novel polymer synthesis capabilities such as the autonomous synthesis of sequence-defined polymers or one-shot multiblock copolymer syntheses.

Influence of gadolinium doping on structural, optical, and electronic properties of polymeric graphitic carbon nitride

Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) materials have received great attention in the fields of photo and electrocatalysis due to their distinct properties in metal-free systems with high physicochemical stability. Nevertheless, the activity of undoped gCN is limited due to its relatively low specific surface area, low conductivity, and poor dispersibility. Doping Gd atoms in a gCN matrix is an efficient strategy to fine-tune its catalytic activity and its electronic structure. Herein, the influence of various wt% of gadolinium (Gd) doped in melon-type carbon nitride was systematically investigated. Gadolinium-doped graphitic carbon nitride (GdgCN) was synthesized by adding gadolinium nitrate to dicyandiamide during polymerization. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results revealed that the crystallinity and the morphological properties are influenced by the % of Gd doping. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies revealed that the gadolinium ions bonded with nitrogen atoms. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations illustrate possible bonding configurations of Gd ions both in bulk material and on ultrathin melon layers and provide evidence for the corresponding bandgap modifications induced by gadolinium doping.
