The Convergence of Analysis Produced by Overlapping Assimilation Streams

When conducting a reanalysis for a long period, it is common to do so using multiple, parallel computational schemes. A period of overlap is included to foster continuity between successive streams. At the GMAO, the overlap period is one year. By the end of that period, the time mean anlysis for corresponding overlapped months are almost identical, as desired. The variances of differences at corresponding analysis times within each month, however, do not converge to zero. Instead their monthly variances converge to values that are a significant fraction of the the estimated variances of analysis errors. This occurs although the overlapping streams use the same observations, assimilation model, and assimilation algorithm, differing only in the background applied information applied at the beginning of the overlap period.

On the Synergy Between Numerics and Subgrid Scale Modeling in LES of Stratified Flows: Grid Convergence of a Stratocumulus-Topped Boundary Layer

The effectiveness of a linear upwinding scalar advection scheme to suppress numerical dispersion errors near sharp inversions in large-eddy simulations of a nocturnal stratocumulus-topped boundary layer is assessed. Linear upwinding is a trade-off between non-dissipative and non-linear positive definite advection schemes. It is shown that linear upwinding does not negatively impact the model's grid convergence properties and a sharp inversion free of numerical artifacts is maintained. Even though mean profiles and turbulence fluxes show good grid convergence characteristics the liquid water amount varies significantly with grid resolution. The entrainment rate is identical for all resolutions and independent of the liquid water amount. For the present stratocumulus case, the impact of cloud-top radiative cooling is negligible and turbulence is largely driven by convection emanating from the surface.

Exponential Convergence of the Tracking Error in Adaptive Systems Without Persistent Excitation

Persistent excitation conditions which ensure parameter convergence in adaptive algorithms have been studied by many researchers. Here, conditions are investigated for exponential convergence of the tracking error in feedforward adaptive systems without persistent excitation. Particular attention is paid to the continuous-time LMS algorithm in the overparametrized case. Results are presented.

An Unipolar Terminal-Attractor Based Neural Associative Memory with Adaptive Threshold and Perfect Convergence

For the first time, a unipolar terminal-attractor based neural associative memory (TABAM)system with adaptive threshold and perfect convergence is presented. By adaptively setting thethreshold values for the dynamic iteration for the unipolar binary neuron states with terminal-attractors and inner-product approach, we demonstrate via computer simulation the achievement ofperfect convergence and correct retrieval. The simulation is completed with a small number of storedstates (M) and a small number of neurons (N) but a large M/N ratio. An experiment with exclusive-or logic operation using LCTV SLMs is used to show feasibility of the optoelectronic implementationof the models.

Mid-Pliocene El Niño/Southern Oscillation Suppressed By Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone Shift

The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the dominant driver of year-to-year climate variability in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, impacts climate pattern across the globe. However, the response of the ENSO system to past and potential future temperature increases is not fully understood. Here we investigate ENSO variability in the warmer climate of the mid-Pliocene (~3.0–3.3 Ma), when surface temperatures were ~2–3 °C above modern values, in a large ensemble of climate models—the Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project. We show that the ensemble consistently suggests a weakening of ENSO variability, with a mean reduction of 25% (±16%). We further show that shifts in the equatorial Pacific mean state cannot fully explain these changes. Instead, ENSO was suppressed by a series of off-equatorial processes triggered by a northward displacement of the Pacific intertropical convergence zone: weakened convective feedback and intensified Southern Hemisphere circulation, which inhibit various processes that initiate ENSO. The connection between the climatological intertropical convergence zone position and ENSO we find in the past is expected to operate in our warming world with important ramifications for ENSO variability.

Experimental Behavior of Pentaborane-Air Combustion Products During Expansion in a Convergent Divergent Nozzle

In order to evaluate the post combustion behavior of boric oxide, pentaborane-air mixtures, burned to completion at a combustor pressure of 3 atmospheres, were expanded through a 7.1-inch-long convergent-divergent nozzle having a 4-inch-diameter throat and an exit-to-throat area ratio of 1.68. The experimentally determined thrust performance was in good agreement with the ideal equilibrium performance at stagnation temperatures of 3300 deg R and lower. The boric oxide vapor at the combustor exit required about 400 F deg supercooling before any condensed phase was observed. For a given thrust, fuel consumption was as much as 20 percent greater than predicted from vapor-pressure data for combustor outlet temperatures i n the vicinity of 3600 deg R. A similar result could be expected in full-scale engines, since the test combustor provided an unusually long dwell time and a highly turbulent environment. During the expansion process, the vapor (when present) did not condense to the extent predicted for an equilibrium expansion process. Moreover, condensation was observed only i n the form of small, abrupt phase changes i n the subsonic flow near the throat. Friction, due to liquid boric oxide films on the nozzle surfaces, was negligible when the surface temperature was above 800 F.
