Approximate Inverse Chain Preconditioner: Iteration Count Case Study for Spectral Support Solvers

As the growing availability of computational power slows, there has been an increasing reliance on algorithmic advances. However, faster algorithms alone will not necessarily bridge the gap in allowing computational scientists to study problems at the edge of scientific discovery in the next several decades. Often, it is necessary to simplify or precondition solvers to accelerate the study of large systems of linear equations commonly seen in a number of scientific fields. Preconditioning a problem to increase efficiency is often seen as the best approach; yet, preconditioners which are fast, smart, and efficient do not always exist. Following the progress of [1], we present a new preconditioner for symmetric diagonally dominant (SDD) systems of linear equations. These systems are common in certain PDEs, network science, and supervised learning among others. Based on spectral support graph theory, this new preconditioner builds off of the work of [2], computing and applying a V-cycle chain of approximate inverse matrices. This preconditioner approach is both algebraic in nature as well as hierarchically-constrained depending on the condition number of the system to be solved. Due to its generation of an Approximate Inverse Chain of matrices, we refer to this as the AIC preconditioner. We further accelerate the AIC preconditioner by utilizing precomputations to simplify setup and multiplications in the con-text of an iterative Krylov-subspace solver. While these iterative solvers can greatly reduce solution time, the number of iterations can grow large quickly in the absence of good preconditioners. Initial results for the AIC preconditioner have shown a very large reduction in iteration counts for SDD systems as compared to standard preconditioners such as Incomplete Cholesky (ICC) and Multigrid (MG). We further show significant reduction in iteration counts against the more advanced Combinatorial Multigrid (CMG) preconditioner. We have further developed no-fill sparsification techniques to ensure that the computational cost of applying the AIC preconditioner does not grow prohibitively large as the depth of the V-cycle grows for systems with larger condition numbers. Our numerical results have shown that these sparsifiers maintain the sparsity structure of our system while also displaying significant reductions in iteration counts.1 2

Data-Driven Template Discovery Using Graph Convolutional Neural Networks

Modeling adversarial activities is a critical component of developing high-con?dence indicators of efforts to acquire, fabricate, proliferate, and/or deploy weapons of mass terror (WMTs). Current approaches to generating representative patterns of interest (a.k.a templates) from the real-world domains involve a Subject Matter Expert (SME)-guided manual process. The goal of Data-Driven Template Discovery (DDTD) is to use a (potentially small) set of SME generated templates to discover other previously unknown and interesting templates in an attributed graph. A template is an activity pattern describing a set of interactions among a group of nodes in the graph. The motivation behind DDTD is to expand the original set of templates, without having SMEs craft all the templates by hand. DDTD also provides seed templates to SMEs, to help them construct larger, high-?delity, and scenario-oriented templates. In these cases, obtaining a larger set of templates that are related (contain similar signals) to the original set is of great value. In this work, we propose to use Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCNs) to discover new templates that are heavily related to the original set. GCNs are a family of Neural Network (NN) architectures especially designed to work directly on graphs. In contrast to the traditional NNs, that require considerable amounts of labeled data, GCNs do not require a big labeled training set because they can directly leverage the graph structure instead. This property makes GCNs the perfect tool for creating activity templates.

Emergency Voltage Regulation in Power Systems via Ripple-Type Control: Preprint

With increasing penetration of volatile renewable generation and cyber-physical disruptions, ensuring safe operation of bulk power systems has become unprecedentedly challenging. Since communication and computational costs restrict centralized system dispatch to be called upon every few minutes; and purely local schemes are shown to be insufficient, distributed controls have been advocated for handling unanticipated system conditions in real time. However, the applicability of distributed control schemes is fundamentally limited by their need for widespread communication and model cognizance. In this con-text, we put forth a hybrid low-communication saturation-driven protocol for the coordination of control agents that are distributed over a physical system and are allowed to communicate with peers over a ‘hotline’ communication network. Under this protocol, when agents observe a constraint violation based on local measurements, they respond locally until their control resources saturate, in which case they send a beacon for assistance to peer agents. The scheme ensures that minor violations are efficiently mitigated via fast local controls, while severe violations may be handled by a collaboration of a relatively small set of agents. We evaluate the performance of this scheme via extensive numerical tests on the IEEE 14-bus test feeder, where agents act upon noisy measurements under diverse scenarios of random load variations and severe low/high voltage events.

GRIP: Constraint-based Explanation of Missing Answers for Graph Queries

Abstract: A useful feature in graph query engines is to clarify “Why certain entities (nodes, attribute values or edges) are missing” in query answers. This task is even more challenging when the relevant data is already missing in the underlying data source. Missing data, on the other hand, can be inferred by enforcing data constraints for graphs. We demonstrate GRIP, a system that exploits data constraints to clarify missing answers for graph queries. (1) Constraint-based ex- planation. Given a desired yet missing entity in the query answer, GRIP ensures to generate finite and minimal sequences of data con- strains (an “explanation”) that should be consecutively enforced to ?? to ensure its occurrence for the same query. (2) Answering “why” and“how” questions. Users can query GRIP with both“Why”(“Why” the element is missing) and “How” questions (“How” to refine the graph to include the missing answer). GRIP engine supports run- time generation of explanations by incrementally maintaining a set of bi-directional search trees. (3) Interactive exploration. GRIP provides a user-friendly GUI to support interactive ad visual exploration of explanations, including both automated generation and step-by-step inspection of graph manipulations.

Optimization Methodology of Pebble Bed HTGR Start-Up and Running-in Strategy

In recent years interest in advanced reactor technologies has increased significantly. However, the methods used for analysis of traditional nuclear reactors are insufficient to consider all the different and varied advanced reactor designs without further development. One promising advanced reactor design is the pebble bed reactor (PBR). PBRs possess unique operational and fuel cycle features that require the development of specific analysis methodologies to adequately design and analyze the systems. There is a need in PBR research for a capability to analyze and optimize the process of transitioning from the start-up reactor core to the equilibrium core (known as the “running-in” of the reactor). The start-up of a PBR and the transition to the equilibrium core is a complex, multi-physics challenge that has not yet been well researched and has many opportunities for design, analysis, and optimization of the process. In this research, a methodology is defined to consider the potential strategies in PBR start-up and run-in to the equilibrium core. Multiple candidate software are considered, and their pros and cons are discussed for the PBR-specific application in the methodology. A preliminary software selection for the physics engine is made, and initial verification of key modules is performed. Software to support optimization of the reactor run-in strategies through reduced order modeling (ROM) and machine learning are considered. Challenges for a full implementation of the methodology are discussed. Additional code selections and verification of models relevant to the application are needed before full demonstration of the methodology can be achieved and an optimal strategy determined.

Enabling Computation on Sensitive Data in International Safeguards with Privacy-Preserving Encryption Techniques

Privacy-preserving machine learning is a field of study that explores how to protect and preserve the privacy of sensitive data while allowing the data to be used by machine learning algorithms. This field has had substantial industry investment due to heightened concerns about privacy in the technology industry, with a focus in two broad application areas: financial services and healthcare. Numerous privacy-preserving methods have also been proposed for international safeguards, but they have been difficult to enact because the data they require is con- sidered sensitive or proprietary by the nuclear facility operator. This work examines how current privacy-preserving approaches might be used to enable the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to use that data to contribute to a safeguards conclusion about a state while giving nuclear operators confidence that their sensitive data is adequately protected. This paper begins by exploring several broad categories of privacy-preserving techniques including homomorphic encryption, secure multiparty computation, secure enclaves, and zero-knowledge proofs. Then we discuss some of the security considerations related to using these methods, potential use cases, and a conceptual system design for applying privacy-preserving methods in international safeguards.

Utilizing Additive Manufacturing to Create Prototype and Functional Beamline Instrumentation and Support Components

The world of beamline science is often fast-paced and dynamic. One of the major challenges in this environment is to be able to design, manufacture and then implement new items for use on the beamlines in a fast and accurate manner. Many times, this involves iterating the design to address unknown or new variables which were not pre- sent at the beginning of the project planning task. Through the use of additive manufacturing, I have been able to support the user programs of various (APS) Ad- vanced Photon Source beamlines* across multiple scien- tific disciplines. I will provide a few detailed examples of Items that were created for specific beamline applications and discuss what benefits they provided to the pertinent project. I will also talk about why choosing consumer- level printer options to produce the parts has been the direction I went and the pros and cons of this decision. Pri marily, this choice allowed for quicker turnaround times and the ability to make more frequent changes in an efficient manner. Currently, we are utilizing only the fused deposition modelling (FDM) type printers but I am exploring the addition of UV-activated resin printing, exotic materials that can be utilized using the current toolset, and the possibility of commercial metal printing systems. This technology has been a game-changer for the implementation of new support items and instrumentation over the last couple of years for the different disciplines I am sup- porting. I will discuss how the roadmap ahead and what the evolving technologies could potentially allow us to do.

Can color-mixed system technology improve lighting quality and energy efficiency?

LEDs have made tremendous inroads in the architectural lighting market but have yet to reach their potentials for energy efficiency or delivering benefit to building occupants. Progress in color-mixed systems can contribute to both goals with anticipated benefits for luminous efficacy, application efficacy, human health, plant growth, and general satisfaction. These benefits can be achieved because unlike static, broadband white light emitters that are ubiquitous today, color-mixed systems offer spectral flexibility. The prospect of widespread implementation of tunable lighting by the 2030s is exciting, but it will require overcoming several challenges and greater responsibility from the specifier. Now is the time to begin planning and developing effective strategies for deploying color-mixed LED systems. Here we examine the pros, cons, and development path for this technology.

Adaptive Protective Relay Settings – A Vision to the Future

Adaptive relaying utilizes the continuously changing status of the power system as the basis for online adjustment of the power system relay settings. Fundamentally they are protection schemes that adjust settings and/or logic of operations based on the prevailing conditions of the system. These adjustments can include, but are not limited to, the logging of data for post-mortem analysis, communication throughout the system, as well as changing relay parameters. Adaptive relaying considers the fact that the status of a power system can change. These include system configuration changes, load effect, cold load pickup, end-of-line protection, transformer protection, and automatic reclosing. In this research, the author focus on the need for a secure, selective, and reliable system for adaptive overcurrent protection in T&D and Distributed Energy Systems. Various types of adaptive methods are presented and explained along with some pros and cons of each.

Self-Sensing, Stretchable, Active Circuit Arrays: Liquid Metal Paste as a Combination Interconnect and Strain Sensor

Stretchable electrical interconnects and substrate materials are increasingly used to create flexible and con-formable electronic systems for soft robotics, smart textiles, and wearable devices. Wires fabricated using composite or liquid conductive inks encapsulated in silicone enable high strain and are mechanically robust. The resistance of these inter-connects increases with strain, which can present challenges for power delivery and signaling among electronic components. However, this effect can be used directly to estimate strain within a stretchable circuit without the need for additional sensor components. In this work, we present an approach for fabricating fully-stretchable, multi-layer active circuit arrays in silicone using liquid metal paste interconnects, in which power and data wires are re-purposed as strain sensors to estimate substrate deformation. As a proof-of-principle, we demonstrate a 3×3 active circuit array that self-senses relative voltage supply at each node to estimate deformation and consumes less than 10 mA per node. Each node is digitally addressable and performs both analog measurement and digital conversion. All interconnects are fabricated using liquid metal paste, and power, data, and sensing are performed over a shared, four-wire interface in this multi-layer stretchable printed circuit board.

Binary-level Software Compatibility Tool Agreement

Application Binary Interface (ABI) compatibility is essential for system or software updates to ensure that libraries continue to function. Tools that can assess a binary or library ABI can thus be used to make predictions about compatibility, and predict downstream bugs by informing developers and users about issues. In this work, we are interested in describing a set of well-known tools for assessing ABI, and testing them in a controlled set experiments to assess tool agreement. We run 7660 smaller experiments across tools (N=30,640 total results) to evaluate not only predictions, but also each tool’s ability to provide detail about underlying issues. In this paper, along with highlighting the problem of assessing ABI compatibility and critiquing the pros and cons of currently available tools, we provide guidance to developers interested to test ABI based on our empirical results and suggestions for future work.
