1D Magnetic MX 3 Single-Chains (M = Cr, V and X = Cl, Br, I)

Magnetic materials in reduced dimensions are not only excellent platforms for fundamental studies of magnetism, but they play crucial roles in technological advances. The discovery of intrinsic magnetism in monolayer 2D van der Waals systems has sparked enormous interest, but the single-chain limit of 1D magnetic van der Waals materials has been largely unexplored. This paper reports on a family of 1D magnetic van der Waals materials with composition MX 3 (M = Cr, V, and X = Cl, Br, I), prepared in fully-isolated fashion within the protective cores of carbon nanotubes. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy identifies unique structures that differ from the well-known 2D honeycomb lattice MX 3 structure. Density functional theory calculations reveal charge-driven reversible magnetic phase transitions.

Understanding the Role of Borohydride Doping in Electrochemical Stability of Argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 Cl Solid‐State Electrolyte

This work elucidates the mechanism by which lithium borohydride (LiBH 4 ) doping into argyrodite-type Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LBH-LPSCl) solid-state electrolyte (SSE) enhances electrochemical stability. State-of-the-art electrochemical performance is achieved with 5 wt% borohydride. Symmetric cells achieve critical current density (CCD) of 7.3 mA cm −2 , versus 2.6 mA cm −2 for baseline-LPSCl. All solid-state batteries (ASSBs) employing lithium metal and NMC811 cathode are stable over 400 cycles at 0.5C, with capacity retention of 83%. An anode-free ASSB (AF-ASSB) is stable over 600 cycles, with capacity loss of 0.04% per cycle. 5LBH-LPSCl allows for enhanced low temperature operation, down to −14 °C. Yet the difference in electrolytes’ bulk microstructures and hardnesses are minimal, while ionic conductivity is incrementally improved (≈50%). Theoretical modeling indicates limited effect of substitution on thermodynamic stability of PS 4 3- units, which decompose when contacting Li. Instead, enhanced electrochemical stability is site-specific kinetic effect: In situ electrodeposition experiments using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) reveal tri-layer SEI based predominately on Li 3 P/LiBH 4 /Li 2 S that blocks electrons while facilitating ion transport. This SEI manifests reduced interface resistance and accelerated nucleation and growth of metallic Li. With baseline-LPSCl the SEI based on Li 3 P/Li 2 S is substantially thicker, generating localized stresses that promote interfacial cracking while cycling.

Molten Salts-Driven Discovery of a Polar Mixed-Anion 3D Framework at the Nanoscale: Zn 4 Si 2 O 7 Cl 2 , Charge Transport and Photoelectrocatalytic Water Splitting

Mixed-anion compounds widen the chemical space of attainable materials compared to single anionic compounds, but the exploration of their structural diversity is limited by common synthetic paths. Especially, oxychlorides rely mainly on layered structures, which suffer from low stability during photo(electro)catalytic processes. Herein we report a strategy to design a new polar 3D tetrahedral framework with composition Zn 4 Si 2 O 7 Cl 2 . We use a molten salt medium to enable low temperature crystallization of nanowires of this new compound, by relying on tetrahedral building units present in the melt to build the connectivity of the oxychloride. These units are combined with silicon-based connectors from a non-oxidic Zintl phase to enable precise tuning of the oxygen content. This structure brings high chemical and thermal stability, as well as strongly anisotropic hole mobility along the polar axis. These features, associated with the ability to adjust the transport properties by doping, enable to tune water splitting properties for photoelectrocatalytic H 2 evolution and water oxidation. This work then paves the way to a new family of mixed-anion solids

Chemical and Electrochemical Characterization of Hot–Pressed Li 6 PS 5 Cl Solid State Electrolyte: Operating Pressure–Invariant High Ionic Conductivity

Sulfide solid state electrolytes (SSE) are among the most promising materials in the effort to replace liquid electrolytes, largely due to their comparable ionic conductivities. Among the sulfide SSEs, Argyrodites (Li 6 PS 5 X, X=Cl, Br, I) further stand out due to their high theoretical ionic conductivity (~1×10 –2 S cm –1 ) and interfacial stability against reactive metal anodes such as lithium. Generally, solid state electrolyte pellets are pressed from powder feedstock at room temperature, however, pellets fabricated by cold pressing consistently result in low bulk density and high porosity, facilitating interfacial degradation reactions and allowing dendrites to propagate through the pores and grain boundaries. Here, we demonstrate the mechanical and electrochemical implications of hot-pressing standalone LPSCl SSE pellets with near-theoretical ionic conductivity, superior cycling performance, and enhanced mechanical stability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and x-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) analysis reveal no chemical changes to the Argyrodite surface after hot pressing up to 250°C. Furthermore, we use electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to understand mechanical stability of Argyrodite SSE pellets as a function of externally applied pressure, demonstrating for the first time pressed standalone Argyrodite pellets with near-theoretical conductivities at external pressures below 14 MPa.

Synthesis of [(3,4,5‐F 3 C 6 H 2 )(4‐ n BuC 6 H 4 ) 2 C][HCB 11 Cl 11 ]: A Much More Soluble Version of the Trityl Cation with Slightly Higher Lewis Acidity

A new triarylmethyl cation (*Tr + ), designed to closely mimic Ph 3 C + in reactivity, has been prepared as a [HCB 11 Cl 11 ] − salt. *Tr + very slightly exceeds the Lewis acidity of Ph 3 C + in chloride and hydride transfer reactions, but possesses two orders of magnitude higher solubility in organic solvents of low polarity.

Dependence of the Elastic Stiffness Tensors of PETN, α‐RDX, γ‐RDX, ϵ‐RDX, ϵ‐CL‐20, DAAF, FOX‐7, and β‐HMX on Hydrostatic Compression

Abstract The dependence of the components of the elastic stiffness tensors (or elastic constants) of the organic explosives PETN, RDX, CL‐20, DAAF, FOX‐7, and HMX on hydrostatic pressure up to 10 GPa have been computed using dispersion‐corrected density functional theory. We report the evolution of lattice parameters and the non‐zero stiffnesses for the tetragonal, orthorhombic, and monoclinic crystal symmetries. Linear and quadratic dependencies of the components of the elastic stiffness tensors on volumetric compression and hydrostatic pressure are tabulated for use in single crystal plasticity models.

The solubility and speciation of REE phosphate endmembers (CePO 4 and YPO 4 ) in Cl-rich aqueous fluids from 350 to 450 °C and implications for natural systems

The rare earth elements (REE) are important metals used increasingly in advanced technologies. Within the crust, the elements Ce and Y are commonly more abundant compared to other lanthanides and comprise important end-member constituents of REE-bearing minerals. Specifically, Ce is part of the light (L) REE which have larger ionic radii than the heavy (H) REE, which are grouped together with Y. These differences in ionic radius can lead to important physico-chemical trends within the lanthanide group. Despite a recent increase in experimental and thermodynamic data for the REE at high temperature and pressure, there is still a significant lack of these data at supercritical conditions. In this study we conducted batch-type experiments to measure the solubility of REE phosphates (CePO 4 and YPO 4 ) at varying starting pH (1.5–10), and salinity (0.01–1.4 mol/kg NaCl) at 350 and P sat , and from 400 to 450 °C at 700 bar. Results show that the solubility of Ce (33–0.14 ppb) is generally higher than Y (13–0.13 ppb) and that Ce complexes more strongly with both chloride and hydroxyl ligands compared to Y. The solubilities of both REE phosphates are highly pH-dependent and, to a lesser extent, depend on salinity at the studied conditions. The solubility data from this study were implemented into the GEMSFITS program to optimize the thermodynamic properties of Ce and Y hydroxyl and chloride species. The updated standard partial molal Gibbs energies of formation (Δ f G 0 T,P ) are used within the experimental temperature and pressure range to accurately predict the CePO 4 and YPO 4 solubility and Ce and Y speciation behavior. Based on the updated thermodynamic properties we also provide formation constants (log β n Cl,OH ) for Ce and Y hydroxyl and chloride species. Updated thermodynamic properties are applied to model REE-apatite dissolution and REE mobility based on the Pea Ridge iron oxide apatite deposit in Missouri, USA. The apatite dissolution model replicates natural observations including the replacement of monazite and xenotime after apatite and is an example of the utility of the new thermodynamic constants applied to supercritical crustal fluids. Furthermore, the findings of this study advance the predictive capabilities of geochemical models, our understanding of the behavior of individual REE, and permit modeling the overarching fractionation trends between LREE and HREE in supercritical crustal fluids.

Theoretical study of CH 3 Cl-N 2 line shapes in the ν 1 band. Line mixing effects in QR doublets and QQ k sub-branches

Line coupling and line mixing effects of CH 3 Cl lines in the ν 1 band perturbed by N 2 have been investigated. We have taken into account the non-diagonality of the exp(–S 2 ) operator within specified line spaces as well as the k-degeneracy of the transitions (due to the double degeneracy of the j,k levels with k ≠ 0). These transitions should be considered as doublets coupled by the line mixing process. A new problem appears in the calculation when the atom-atom potential model is introduced. In order to overcome this difficulty, a pragmatic approach is proposed. Comparisons of theoretically calculated matrix elements of W with measurements of QR(j,k) doublets as well as some QQ k sub-branches, which are strongly affected by line mixing, have been made. Finally, the results show that the formalism improved in this way leads to rather accurate predictions.

Colloidal synthesis and charge carrier dynamics of Cs 4 Cd 1-x Cu x Sb 2 Cl 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) layered double perovskite nanocrystals

The toxicity and instability of lead-based metal halide perovskites are the two main obstacles that prevent perovskite materials from implementation in applications. Recently, layered double perovskites (LDPs) emerge as a new family of perovskite materials which provide a new route to solve these problems by lead-component replacement and reduction of crystal structure dimensionality. However, LDP nanocrystals (NCs) have been rarely studied, limiting the further property exploration and application realization. In this work, we report the colloidal synthesis of a series of Cs 4 Cd 1-x Cu x Sb 2 Cl 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) LDP NCs by tuning the stoichiometry of metal precursors. The composition-structure-property relationships of the resulting LDP NCs are studied through materials characterizations, density functional theory calculations, and transient-absorption spectroscopy. In addition, we demonstrate that high-performance high-speed photodetectors can be fabricated using the colloidal LDP NCs through solution-processing. This work premises further expansion of such LDP-based materials for both fundamental studies and application integrations.

Thermodynamics of cesium lead halide (CsPbX 3 , x= I, Br, Cl) perovskites

Inorganic cesium lead halide (CsPbX 3 , X = I, Br, Cl) perovskites have sparked broad interest for photovoltaic applications, which, however, may be plagued by chemical and thermodynamic instabilities. This work reports calorimetric studies on the formation enthalpies of CsPbX 3 perovskites, confirming decreasing thermodynamic stability in the order CsPbCl 3 , CsPbBr 3 and CsPbI 3 . Cesium lead iodide (CsPbI 3 ), one of the most studied inorganic lead halide perovskites, is shown to be only barely stable from a thermodynamic perspective. This order of increasing instability is consistent with the variation of Goldschmidt tolerance factor. The perovskites are high temperature entropy-stabilized phases with respect to low temperature polymorphs, with the thermodynamics of phase transitions reflecting the above thermodynamic trends.

Crystal structure of besifloxacin hydrochloride, C 19 H 22 ClFN 3 O 3 Cl

The crystal structure of besifloxacin hydrochloride has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Besifloxacin hydrochloride crystallizes in space group P1 (#1) with a = 5.36596(8), b = 10.3234(4), c = 17.9673(14) Å, α = 98.122(5), β = 92.9395(9), γ = 96.1135(3)°, V = 977.483(13) Å 3 , and Z = 2. The crystal structure is approximately centrosymmetric. Strong N–H∙∙∙Cl hydrogen bonds form a corrugated ladder-like chain along the a-axis. The carboxylic acid group in each independent cation acts as the donor in a strong intramolecular O–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bond to an adjacent carbonyl group. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

K 2 CuX 3 (X = Cl, Br): All-Inorganic Lead-Free Blue Emitters with Near-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield

Recently, copper(I) halides have been gaining increased attention as highly luminescent nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. In this paper, we report preparation of blue emitting, lead free, all-inorganic halides K 2 CuX 3 (X = Cl, Br) through five synthetic methods including traditional solid-state and solution methods. The photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra of K 2 CuCl 3 and K 2 CuBr 3 exhibit narrow peaks centered at 392 and 388 nm with full widths at half-maximum (fwhm) values of ~54 nm. The visible bright blue emission is corroborated by the remarkably high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) values up to ~97%. Furthermore, radioluminescence measurements on K 2 CuCl 3 yield a bright peak at 404 nm under irradiation with X-rays at 200 kVp and 20 mA, which is optimal for use with PMTs and Si photomultipliers, suggesting a strong potential of this family for radiation detection applications. Based on our combined experimental and computational investigations, the origin of the efficient luminescence in K 2 CuX 3 is attributed to the high stability self-trapped excitons (STE) formed in the one-dimensional anionic ∞ 1 [CuX 3 ] 2– chains. Advantageously, K 2 CuX 3 demonstrate improved air- and photostability compared to the previously reported copper(I) halides. The discovery of highly efficient and high stability light emitters based on earth-abundant copper(I) halides paves the way for their potential practical applications.

From Cation Order to Disorder: Unlocking Ion Transport Pathways in Li–Zn–Zr–Cl Halospinels

Lithium metal chloride halospinels of the general formula Li 2 MCl 4 are a promising class of earth-abundant ion conductors for all-solid-state batteries. However, poor roomtemperature ionic conductivity has historically limited their use in practical applications. Here, we substitute Zr 4+ into Li 2 ZnCl 4 along the series Li 2−2x/3 Zn 1−x Zr 2x/3 Cl 4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.0) to understand how cation disorder and vacancy tuning impact ion transport in “normal” halospinels. Aliovalent Zr 4+ substitution increases ionic conductivity by nearly 5 orders of magnitude, from 1.320(3) × 10 −9 S cm −1 in Li 2 ZnCl 4 to 6.74(1)× 10 −5 S cm −1 for x = 0.6. Average and local structure characterization through synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and neutron pair distribution function (nPDF) analysis reveal that Zr 4+ redistributes the Zn 2+ and Li + sublattices into previously unoccupied interstitial sites, which form new low-energy hopping pathways that facilitate ion transport. We rationalize the dramatic rearrangement of the cation local structure by considering the coordination preferences of the cations and the potential electrostatic penalties incurred by the higher-valent Zr 4+ cations. This work delivers an atomistic understanding of substitution-induced cation disorder and ion transport properties in a new family of earth-abundant halospinels.

A Dicationic fac -Re(bpy)(CO) 3 Cl for CO 2 Electroreduction at a Reduced Overpotential

Here, a dicationic Re bipyridine-type complex, fac-Re(6,6'-(2-((trimethylammonio)-methyl)phenyl)-2,2'-bipyridine)(CO) 3 Cl hexafluorophosphate (1 2+ ), has been synthesized and its electrochemical behavior under Ar and CO 2 has been investigated. The presence of pendent tetra-alkylammonium cations induces an anodic shift in the electrocatalytic potential for CO 2 reduction relative to structurally similar model complexes. The electrochemical mechanisms in anhydrous CH 3 CN and in the presence of weak acids (water or trifluoroethanol) have been analyzed using cyclic voltammetry assisted by infrared spectroelectrochemistry and theoretical calculations. The dication enables catalysis at a diminished potential through coulombic stabilization of the doubly reduced pentacoordinate species, its CO 2 adduct, the hydroxide anion, and the conjugate base formed during acid-assisted C-OH bond cleavage of the metallocarboxylic acid to the metallocarbonyl and H 2 O. The major reduction product is CO, but in the presence of trifluoroethanol, formate is also produced with 14% Faradaic efficiency.

Stabilization of [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– (X = H, F, Cl, Br) by Conjugation and Hyperconjugation Effects

The isolation of nucleophilic boron bases has led to a paradigm shift in boron chemistry. Previous studies of the bis(carbene) borylene complexes revealed that these compounds possess strong donor abilities, and their reaction inertness is due to the large steric hindrance between boron reagents and reactant. In the present study, we have theoretically studied the [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– compounds (X = H, F, Cl, Br). Their electronic structures and properties are discussed by using the NBO, LOL, and ELF methods. We found that both π-conjugation and hyperconjugation effects can effectively stabilize the substituted nucleophilic anionic boron compounds [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– . Substituents, especially X = H, stabilize the boron center through highly delocalized π-bonding, involving the formally “empty” in-plane p orbitals of the boron atom. While the halogen substituents have high electron withdrawal ability, leading to systems being less stable, we suggest the borinium anions [(N 5 ) 2 BH] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 H 2 ] 2– as possible synthetic targets of novel environmentally friendly catalysts.

Bond Dissociation Energies and Electronic Calculations on the Actinide Halides ThX and UX (X = Cl, Br, I)

Resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy has been used to locate predissociation thresholds in the spectra of the actinide halides ThX and UX, where X = Cl, Br, and I. These predissociation thresholds are identified as the bond dissociation energies (BDEs) of the molecules. The resulting values show very similar BDEs for the corresponding ThX and UX species, with the thorium molecules being slightly more strongly bound: D 0 (ThCl) = 5.077(6) eV, D 0 (ThBr) = 4.391(4) eV, D 0 (ThI) = 3.537(8) eV, D 0 (UCl) = 4.989(3) eV, D 0 (UBr) = 4.313(3) eV, and D 0 (UI) = 3.449(8) eV. Here, the estimated error limit is given in parentheses in units of the last reported digit. Spinor-based coupled cluster calculations have also been carried out on the halides of this work, including also ThF and UF. Here, the final D 0 values after including contributions due to basis set incompleteness, outer-core-correlation, picture-change, and QED effects are within 0.04 eV of the present experimental values in each case.

Large Electrically and Chemically Tunable Rashba–Dresselhaus Effects in Ferroelectric CsGeX 3 (X = Cl, Br, I) Perovskites

Rashba–Dresselhaus effects, which originate from spin–orbit coupling and allow for spin manipulations, are actively explored in materials, following the pursuit of spintronics and quantum computing. However, materials that possess practically significant Rashba–Dresselhaus effects often contain toxic elements and offer little opportunity for the tunability of the effects. We used first-principles simulations to reveal that the recently discovered halide ferroelectrics in the CsGeX 3 (X = Cl, Br, I) family possess large and tunable Rashba-Dresselhaus effects. In particular, they give origin to the spin splitting of up to 171 meV in the valence band of CsGeI 3 . The value is chemically tunable and can decrease by 25% and 70% for CsGeBr 3 and CsGeCl 3 , respectively. Such chemical tunability could result in the engineering of desired values through a solid solution technique. Application of an electric field was found to result in structural changes that could decrease and increase spin splitting, leading to electrical tunability of the effect. In the vicinity of conduction and valence band extrema, the spin textures are mostly of the Rashba type, which is promising for spin-to-charge conversion applications. The spin directions are coupled with the polarization direction, leading to Rashba-ferroelectricity cofunctionality. Furthermore, our work identifies lead-free perovskite halides as excellent candidates for spin-based applications and is likely to stimulate further research in this direction.

Energetics of Salt-Bearing Sodalites, Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 X 2 (X = SO 4 , ReO 4 , Cl, I): A Treatment Option for Pertechnetate-Enriched Nuclear Waste Streams

An alternative option for treating anion-enriched reprocessed nuclear waste streams is to immobilize technetium-99 ( 99 Tc, β = 293.7 keV, t 1/2 = 2.1 × 10 5 years) and other anions in micro- and mesoporous materials. Here we determine the thermodynamic stability of anion bearing sodalites, Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 X 2 (X = SO 4 , ReO 4 , Cl, I), to improve our understanding of the driving forces that control framework assembly using high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy illustrate a strong dependence for vibrational features on anion size and enabled the development of a linear model that predicted the vibrational features for numerous anion bearing sodalites to within ±20 cm –1 (i.e., OH, F, Br, ClO 4 , NO 3 , and MnO 4 ). The largest negative enthalpy of formation from elements and the lack of structural water demonstrate that the perrhenate sodalite (Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 [ReO 4 ] 2 ), a chemical analogue for pertechnetate sodalite (Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 [TcO 4 ] 2 ), is more thermodynamically stable than all other anion bearing sodalites evaluated. The enthalpies of the reaction between nepheline and the sodium salt, which provides the guest anion species, was negative only for the ReO 4 and NO 3 bearing sodalites. Overall, we report for the first time the enthalpy of the ion exchange reactions for different anion bearing sodalites relative to the perrhenate sodalite, which is a key step in gaining the ability to tune sodalite material properties and structure during treatment and the immobilization of 99 Tc in the presence of competing anions.
