Using Open Data to Characterize Building Stock Trends for Energy and Equity Evaluation

This project provides a methodology for retrieving data from both existing public data and municipal open data sets to characterize changes in the building stock, socioeconomic, demographic, and climate indicators at a neighborhood scale. This methodology forms the basis for a geospatial dashboard to analyze and share the data. The developed methodology may be used to collect data for further energy equity analyses. Additional data sets, such as from other municipalities, may be incorporated in the future to expand the extents of the possible analysis.

Challenges and Lessons Learned in Applying Sensitivity Analysis to Building Stock Energy Models

Uncertainty Analysis (UA) and Sensitivity Analysis (SA) offer essential tools to determine the limits of inference of a model and explore the factors which have the most effect on the model outputs. However, despite a well established body of work applying UA and SA to models of individual buildings, a review of the literature relating to energy models for larger groups of buildings undertaken by Fennell et al. (2019) highlighted very limited application at larger scales. This contribution describes the efforts undertaken by a group of research teams in the context of IEA-EBC Annex 70 working with a diverse set of Building Stock Models (BSMs) to apply global sensitivity analysis methods and compare their results. Since BSMs are a class of model defined by their output and coverage rather than their structure and inputs, they represent a diverse set of modelling approaches. Key challenges for the application of SA are identified and explored, including the influence of model form, input data types and model outputs. This study combines results from 7 different modelling teams, each using different models across a range of urban areas to explore these challenges and begin the process of developing standardised workflows for SA of BSMs.

Estimating the value of jointly optimized electric power generation and end use: a study of ISO-scale load shaping applied to the residential building stock

A generation-to-load simulation estimated the impact, in terms of production costs and CO2 emissions, attributable to the joint optimization of electric power generation and flexible end uses to support increasing penetrations of renewable energy. Newly conceived, evaluated, and foundational in developing a U.S. National Standard was a transaction-less yet continuous demand response system based on a day-ahead optimum load shape (OLS) designed to encourage Internet-connected devices to autonomously and voluntarily explore options to favour lowest cost generators - without requiring two-way communications, personally identifiable information, or customer opt-in. Boundary conditions used for model calibration included historical weather, residential building stock construction attributes, home appliance and device empirical operating schedules, prototypical power distribution feeder models, thermal generator heat rates, startup and ramping constraints, and fuel costs. Results of an hourly-based annual case study of Texas indicate a 1/3 reduction in production costs and a 1/5 reduction in CO2 emissions are possible.

Integration of Electric Vehicle Charging Loads in Residential Building Stock Energy Modeling

The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has resulted in significant new household electric loads that have the potential to change how energy costs are incurred by homeowners and the landscape of utility operations and energy infrastructure. Whereas adoption patterns and magnitudes of residential building and EV charging loads are influenced by distinct factors, the loads themselves are tightly coupled with the behavior of the individual occupants and EV owners.
