Spurious poles in the scattering of electric and magnetic charges

Theories with both electric and magnetic charges (“mutually non-local” theories) have several major obstacles to calculating scattering amplitudes. Even when the interaction arises through the kinetic mixing of two, otherwise independent, U(1)’s, so that all low-energy interactions are perturbative, difficulties remain: using a self-dual, local formalism leads to spurious poles at any finite order in perturbation theory. Correct calculations must show how the spurious poles cancel in observable scattering amplitudes. Consistency requires that one type of charge is confined as a result of one of the U(1)’s being broken. Here we show how the constraints of confinement and parity conservation on observable processes manages to cancel the spurious poles in scattering and pair production amplitudes, paving the way for systematic studies of the experimental signatures of “dark” electric-magnetic processes. Along the way we demonstrate some novel effects in electric-magnetic interactions, including that the amplitude for single photon production of magnetic particles by electric particles vanishes.

A new field solver for modeling of relativistic particle-laser interactions using the particle-in-cell algorithm

A customized finite-difference field solver for the particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithm that provides higher fidelity for wave-particle interactions in intense electromagnetic waves is presented. In many problems of interest, particles with relativistic energies interact with intense electromagnetic fields that have phase velocities near the speed of light. Numerical errors can arise due to (1) dispersion errors in the phase velocity of the wave, (2) the staggering in time between the electric and magnetic fields and between particle velocity and position and (3) errors in the time derivative in the momentum advance. Errors of the first two kinds are analyzed in detail. It is shown that by using field solvers with different -space operators in Faraday’s and Ampere’s law, the dispersion errors and magnetic field time-staggering errors in the particle pusher can be simultaneously removed for electromagnetic waves moving primarily in a specific direction. Here, the new algorithm was implemented into Osiris by using customized higher-order finite-difference operators. Schemes using the proposed solver in combination with different particle pushers are compared through PIC simulation. It is shown that the use of the new algorithm, together with an analytic particle pusher (assuming constant fields over a time step), can lead to accurate modeling of the motion of a single electron in an intense laser field with normalized vector potentials, eA / mc 2 , exceeding for typical cell sizes and time steps.

Suppressed electric quadrupole collectivity in 49 Ti

Single-step Coulomb excitation of 46,48,49,50 Ti is presented. A complete set of E2 matrix elements for the quintuplet of states in 49 Ti, centred on the core excitation, was measured for the first time. A total of nine E2 matrix elements are reported, four of which were previously unknown. $^{49}_{22}$Ti 27 shows a 20% quenching in electric quadrupole transition strength as compared to its semi-magic $^{50}_{22}$Ti 28 neighbour. This 20% quenching, while empirically unprecedented, can be explained with a remarkably simple two-state mixing model, which is also consistent with other ground-state properties such as the magnetic dipole moment and electric quadrupole moment. A connection to nucleon transfer data and the quenching of single-particle strength is also demonstrated. The simplicity of the 49 Ti- 50 Ti pair (i.e., approximate single-j 0 7/2 valence space and isolation of yrast states from non-yrast states) provides a unique opportunity to disentangle otherwise competing effects in the ground-state properties of atomic nuclei, the emergence of collectivity, and the role of proton-neutron interactions.

Spin-related phenomena in spin 3/2 charge carrier holes systems

Charge carrier holes provide a remarkable system for spintronics and quantum information technology. In this review paper, I discuss spin-related phenomena in three-dimensional and low-dimensional hole systems. Special attention is paid to the mutual transformation of heavy and light holes at the boundary of quantum wells and wires that governs values of parameters defining hole spectra in quantum wells, wires and dots, such as effective masses, g-factors and Rashba and Dresselhaus spin–orbit constants. Recently, topological phenomena in condensed matter systems, such as emergence of Majorana zero modes and non-Abelian phases in the fractional quantum Hall effect, sparked considerable interest of researchers. Charge carrier holes turn out to be a remarkable setting for possible observation of these phenomena and advancing topological quantum computing. I discuss the spectra and wavefunctions of two-dimensional holes in magnetic field. While there is a semiclassical range of parameters when heavy and light holes can be described by equidistant Landau levels, ground-level holes and holes in a few low-lying excited states behave as species completely different from electrons. Especially interesting are crossings in hole spectra in magnetic field. Hole–hole interactions can substantially differ from electron–electron interactions. Apart from the difference in exchange splitting, this shows in possible emergence of even denominator fractional quantum Hall state in the ground hole level in magnetic field. I also briefly discuss spintronic phenomena, such as mutual transformation of angular momentum (spin) of holes and electric current, as well as spin-related interference effects in hole transport. Recent developments in a system of Ge hole quantum dots offer new perspectives for hole-based systems.

Observation of the Y(4230) and a new structure in ${\boldsymbol e^+\boldsymbol e^- \boldsymbol\rightarrow \boldsymbol K^+\boldsymbol K^-\boldsymbol J/\boldsymbol\psi}$

The cross sections of $e^+e^- \rightarrow K^+K^-J/\psi$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.127 to 4.600 GeV are measured based on 15.6 fb -1 data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Two resonant structures are observed in the line shape of the cross sections. The mass and width of the first structure are measured to be ($4225.3\pm2.3\pm21.5$) MeV and ($72.9\pm6.1\pm30.8$) MeV, respectively. They are consistent with those of the established $Y(4230)$. The second structure is observed for the first time with a statistical significance greater than 8σ, denoted as $Y(4500)$. Its mass and width are determined to be ($4484.7\pm13.3\pm24.1$) MeV and ($111.1\pm30.1\pm15.2$) MeV, respectively. The first presented uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The product of the electronic partial width with the decay branching fraction $\Gamma(Y(4230)\to e^+ e^-) \mathcal{B}(Y(4230) \to K^+ K^- J/\psi)$ is reported.

DIGS: deep inference of galaxy spectra with neural posterior estimation

Abstract With the advent of billion-galaxy surveys with complex data, the need of the hour is to efficiently model galaxy spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with robust uncertainty quantification. The combination of simulation-based inference (SBI) and amortized neural posterior estimation (NPE) has been successfully used to analyse simulated and real galaxy photometry both precisely and efficiently. In this work, we utilise this combination and build on existing literature to analyse simulated noisy galaxy spectra. Here, we demonstrate a proof-of-concept study of spectra that is (a) an efficient analysis of galaxy SEDs and inference of galaxy parameters with physically interpretable uncertainties; and (b) amortized calculations of posterior distributions of said galaxy parameters at the modest cost of a few galaxy fits with Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. We utilise the SED generator and inference framework Prospector to generate simulated spectra, and train a dataset of 2 × 10 6 spectra (corresponding to a five-parameter SED model) with NPE. We show that SBI—with its combination of fast and amortized posterior estimations—is capable of inferring accurate galaxy stellar masses and metallicities. Our uncertainty constraints are comparable to or moderately weaker than traditional inverse-modelling with Bayesian MCMC methods (e.g. 0.17 and 0.26 dex in stellar mass and metallicity for a given galaxy, respectively). We also find that our inference framework conducts rapid SED inference (0.9–1.2 × 10 5 galaxy spectra via SBI/NPE at the cost of 1 MCMC-based fit). With this work, we set the stage for further work that focuses of SED fitting of galaxy spectra with SBI, in the era of JWST galaxy survey programs and the wide-field Roman Space Telescope spectroscopic surveys.

On the Magnitudes of some CKM Matrix Elements

This write-up follows the presentation at the symposium, with emphasis on topics and ideas discussed there. It is purposefully informal, not a review of the field, and neither does it include a complete list of references. However, I hope that readers might find somwe comments useful or amusing, and may appreciate the challenges and reasons for excitement about recent progress and future opportunities in flavor physics.

Reduction in Nuclear Size and Quadrupole Deformation of High-Spin Isomers of 127,129 In

We employed laser spectroscopy of atomic transitions to measure the nuclear charge radii and electromagnetic properties of the high-spin isomeric states in neutron-rich indium isotopes (𝑍 =49) near the closed proton and neutron shells at 𝑍 = 50 and 𝑁 = 82. Our data reveal a reduction in the nuclear charge radius and intrinsic quadrupole moment when protons and neutrons are fully aligned in 129 In ⁢(𝑁 = 80), to form the high spin isomer. Such a reduction is not observed in 127 In ⁢(𝑁 = 78), where more complex configurations can be formed by the existence of four neutron holes. These observations are not consistently described by nuclear theory.

Two-tone Doppler cooling of radial two-dimensional crystals in a radio-frequency ion trap

We study the Doppler-cooling of radial two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb crystals of trapped barium ions in a radiofrequency trap. Ions in radial 2D crystals experience micromotion of an amplitude that increases linearly with the distance from the trap center, leading to a position-dependent frequency modulation of laser light in each ion's rest frame. We use two tones of Doppler-cooling laser light separated by approximately 100 MHz to efficiently cool distinct regions in the crystals with differing amplitudes of micromotion. This technique allows us to trap and cool more than 50 ions populating 4 shells in a radial two-dimensional crystal, where with a single tone of Doppler cooling light we are limited to 30 ions in 3 shells. Here, we also individually characterize the micromotion of all ions within the crystals, and use this information to locate the center of the trap and to determine the Matthieu parameters q x and q y .
