In situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation enhances the efficiency of CuIn(S,Se) 2 solar cells prepared from molecular-ink solutions

Here, we report an efficiency enhancement of solution-processed CuIn(S,Se) 2 (CISSe) thin film solar cells via in situ incorporation of Al 2 O 3 . These films were produced using inks containing CuCl, InCl 3 , AlNO 3 (Al/Al + In: 0.1) and thiourea dissolved in methanol. After spin coating of these solutions in air, samples were subjected to a selenization process. Auger electron spectroscopy depth-profiling analysis showed that Al is evenly distributed throughout the bulk of the film. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that AlNO 3 precursor reacted with oxygen to form nanosized amorphous Al 2 O 3 grains located within the bulk and grain boundaries of CISSe, as well as at both the top and bottom interfaces. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 11.6% (JS C : 35.8 mA cm –2 , V OC : 518 mV, FF: 62.2%, no anti-reflection coating) was achieved with Al–CISSe solar cell devices integrated with CdS (chemical bath deposition, thickness: 80 nm) and ZnO/ITO bilayers (sputtered, thickness: 300 nm). The average PCE (10.1%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 34.5 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 491 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 59.8%) was nearly 4% (absolute) higher than that measured on CISSe baseline cells fabricated from solutions without Al ($\langle$PCE$\rangle$ = 6.4%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 32.8 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 410 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 47.3%). This in situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation is speculated to play a role in the enhancement of the VOC and FF of the devices through passivation of defects in CISSe reducing interface and bulk recombination, as evidenced by a reduced defect density and an increased activation energy of the dominant recombination mechanism from capacitance and temperature-dependent VOC measurements, respectively.

Compatibility of FeCrAlMo in Flowing Pb-Li at 600°C to 700°C

A series of monometallic thermal convection loops (TCLs) has been conducted to determine the maximum temperature where FeCrAl alloys have compatibility with eutectic lead lithium (Pb-Li) for a dual-coolant fusion blanket. Pre-oxidizing commercial alloy APMT (Fe-21Cr-5Al-3Mo) for 2 h at 1000°C to form a surface α-Al 2 O 3 layer was very effective in reducing the mass loss of specimens in the hot and cold legs of the most recent TCL that was operated for 1000 h with a peak temperature of 700°C. However, unlike previous experiments, the postexposure room temperature ductility of many of the APMT specimens was degraded to <10% total elongation, and many of the specimens at the highest temperature (>680°C) were severely damaged or were not recovered. Furthermore, wide-angle X-ray scattering found that the pre-formed α-Al 2 O 3 scale transformed to a mixture of trigonal and tetragonal LiAlO 2 . The overall results suggest that the maximum temperature for FeCrAl is limited to <700°C.

Operando study of mechanical integrity of high-volume expansion Li-ion battery anode materials coated by Al 2 O 3

Group IV elements and their oxides, such as Si, Ge, Sn and SiO have much higher theoretical capacity than commercial graphite anode. However, these materials undergo large volume change during cycling, resulting in severe structural degradation and capacity fading. Al 2 O 3 coating is considered an approach to improve the mechanical stability of high-capacity anode materials. To understand the effect of Al 2 O 3 coating directly, we monitored the morphology change of coated/uncoated Sn particles during cycling using operando focused ion beam–scanning electron microscopy. Here, the results indicate that the Al 2 O 3 coating provides local protection and reduces crack formation at the early stage of volume expansion. The 3 nm Al 2 O 3 coating layer provides better protection than the 10 and 30 nm coating layer. Nevertheless, the Al 2 O 3 coating is unable to prevent the pulverization at the later stage of cycling because of large volume expansion.

Ultra-thin ZrO 2 overcoating on CuO-ZnO-Al 2 O 3 catalyst by atomic layer deposition for improved catalytic performance of CO 2 hydrogenation to dimethyl ether

Abstract An ultra-thin overcoating of zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ) film on CuO-ZnO-Al 2 O 3 (CZA) catalysts by atomic layer deposition (ALD) was proved to enhance the catalytic performance of CZA/HZSM-5 (H form of Zeolite Socony Mobil-5) bifunctional catalysts for hydrogenation of CO 2 to dimethyl ether (DME). Under optimal reaction conditions (i.e. 240 °C and 2.8 MPa), the yield of product DME increased from 17.22% for the bare CZA/HZSM-5 catalysts, to 18.40% for the CZA catalyst after 5 cycles of ZrO 2 ALD with HZSM-5 catalyst. All the catalysts modified by ZrO 2 ALD displayed significantly improved catalytic stability of hydrogenation of CO 2 to DME reaction, compared to that of CZA/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalysts. The loss of DME yield in 100 h of reaction was greatly mitigated from 6.20% (loss of absolute value) to 3.01% for the CZA catalyst with 20 cycles of ZrO 2 ALD overcoating. Characterizations including hydrogen temperature programmed reduction, x-ray powder diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that there was strong interaction between Cu active centers and ZrO 2 .

Er Al :Al 2 ⁢O 3 for telecom-band photonics: Electronic structure and optical properties

Er-doped Al 2 ⁢O 3 is a promising host for telecom-band integrated photonics. Here, in this study, we combine ab initio calculations with a symmetry-resolved analysis to elucidate substitutional Er on the Al site (Er Al ) in 𝛼−Al 2 ⁢O 3 . First-principles relaxations confirm the structural stability of Er Al . We then use the local trigonal crystal-field symmetry to classify the Er-derived impurity levels by irreducible representations and to derive polarization-resolved electric-dipole selection rules, explicitly identifying the symmetry-allowed 𝑓−𝑑 hybridization channels. Kubo-Greenwood absorption spectra computed from Kohn-Sham states quantitatively corroborate these symmetry predictions. Furthermore, we connect the calculated intra-4⁢𝑓 line strengths to Judd-Ofelt theory, clarifying the role of 4⁢𝑓−5⁢𝑑 admixture in enabling optical activity. Notably, we predict a characteristic absorption near 1.47 µ⁢m (telecom band), relevant for on-chip amplification and emission. To our knowledge, a symmetry-resolved first-principles treatment of Er:Al 2 ⁢O 3 with an explicit Judd-Ofelt interpretation has not been reported, providing a transferable framework for tailoring rare-earth dopants in wide-band-gap oxides for integrated photonics. Our results for the optical spectra are in good agreement with experimental data. The resulting symmetry-based selection rules translate directly to polarization-dependent coupling in Al 2 ⁢O 3 integrated photonic waveguides and resonators, enabling device-level design of TE/TM-mode interaction with Er emitters in the 1.5-µ⁢m telecom band.

Sputtered Aluminum Oxide and p+ Amorphous Silicon Back-Contact for Improved Hole Extraction in Polycrystalline CdSexTe1-x and CdTe Photovoltaics

A thin layer of Al 2 O 3 at the back of CdSe x T e1-x /CdTe devices is shown to passivate the back interface and drastically improve surface recombination lifetimes and photoluminescent response. Despite this, such devices do not show an improvement in open-circuit voltage (VOC.) Adding a p + amorphous silicon layer behind the Al 2 O 3 bends the conduction band upward, reducing the barrier to hole extraction and improving collection. Further optimization of the Al 2 O 3 , amorphous silicon (a-Si), and indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) layers, as well as their interaction with the CdCl 2 passivation process, are necessary to translate these electro-optical improvements into gains in voltage.

Enhanced Surface Passivation by Atomic Layer Deposited Al 2 O 3 for Ultraviolet Sensitive Silicon Photomultipliers

Here, we describe a superior passivation of p-type (p + ) Si surface by Al 2 O 3 thin film that is synthesized by plasma-assisted atomic layer deposition for ultraviolet sensitive silicon photomultipliers (SiPM), compared to conventional SiO 2 and SiN x passivation schemes. The superiority of Al 2 O 3 passivation is due to not only a sufficiently low interface defect density but also a high density of built-in negative charges. A 7 nm thin Al 2 O 3 film can yield an emitter saturation current density of ~8 fA/cm 2 on high sheet resistance p + layer, compared to ~60 and ~1480 fA/cm 2 for thermal SiO 2 and SiN x passivation. This superior surface passivation allows the photon-generated carriers to have higher probabilities to reach the high-field region to trigger an avalanche event. In addition, Al 2 O 3 thin film provides very low values of effective surface recombination velocity on low resistivity n-type and p-type Si surfaces, which can lead to well-passivated surface features on guard ring and trench isolation regions of SiPM. These demonstrate the potential of Al 2 O 3 thin film passivation to improve quantum efficiency and thus photo-detection efficiency of ultraviolet sensitive SiPM with p + /n - /n/n + structure.

Catalyst Deactivation Modes of PdO/γ-Al 2 O 3 Catalysts for Lean Methane Oxidation

PdO/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalysts are one of the most active catalytic components for the complete oxidation of methane. Under reaction conditions, especially in a wet feed, the catalysts suffer severe performance degradation. This study establishes a series of testing protocols to systematically investigate the causes of catalyst deactivation under methane oxidation reaction conditions. Four distinct catalyst deactivation modes are identified. Two of the deactivation modes are directly related to H 2 O, either from the feed gas or as a part of the reaction products, with one (Mode 2) being attributed to the formation of surface hydroxyl groups and the other (Mode 3) to the competitive adsorption of H 2 O on the catalysts. The impact of the two deactivation modes is acute and severe but reversible. In contrast, the other two deactivation modes are gradual and persistent but irreversible. Both modes are induced by CH 4 oxidation reaction, with the impact of a wet feed (Mode 4) being substantially more severe than that of a dry feed (Mode 1). The major cause of the irreversible catalyst deactivation is attributed to surface reconstruction of PdO nanoparticles, which behaves as a passivation layer lowering the number of coordinately unsaturated Pd sites for CH 4 activation. Although the passivation layer is relatively stable against thermal or hydrothermal treatment, it is not completely inert. Formation and partial regeneration of the passivation layer is a highly dynamic process and heavily depends on the reaction temperature: a lower reaction temperature (≤ 450 ℃) can lead to quicker catalyst deactivation; but a higher reaction temperature (between 500 – 550 ℃) can result in a greater extent of catalyst deactivation.

Investigating Local Carrier Dynamics in PERC Patterned CdTe Solar Cells

Remarkable progress has been achieved in CdTe photovoltaics (PVs) to further improve cell performance while reducing manufacturing costs. Researchers optimized the front contact that leads the short-circuit current density (J sc ) over 31mA/cm 2 (e.g., (Zn, Mg)O buffer layer and/or alloying CdTe with Se). Reese et al. reported an open-circuit voltage (V oc ) over 1 V with group-V doped single crystal, showing the feasibility of increasing V oc in CdTe PV that is fixed to less than 900 mV in most cases. Recent studies suggested that the V oc improvement in polycrystalline CdTe PVs requires well-passivated back contact. One possible strategy is to use CdMgTe alloy (E g > 1.8 eV), where the band-gap offset (ΔE CB ≈ 0.2 eV) reflects minority carrier electrons, thereby decreasing surface recombination. Another strategy is to utilize a stable Al 2 O 3 layer as an electron reflector; experimental works confirmed the improved performance with a conformal Al 2 O 3 layer. In this configuration, the precise control of Al 2 O 3 (≈1 nm) over the entire CdTe layer is essential because the J sc greatly depends on the tunneling current. While promising, both CdMgTe and Al 2 O 3 passivation on CdTe introduce unfavorable valence band offset that blocks the hole transport. Kephart et al. proposed a patterned passixc vation layer (≈ 20 nm Al 2 O 3 ) with point contacts (≈ 3 μm in diameter) that extract hole carriers. This configuration is similar to the passive emitter and rear contact (PERC) design that has been extensively studied in Si PVs. While remarkably high carrier lifetime and photoluminescence (> 10 X) were measured, consistent improvement in V oc and efficiency in this CdTe PERC were not yet observed. At this time, it is unclear how the surface potential is distributed in the presence of patterned Al 2 O 3 reflectors and how this additional field impacts the PV performance for Cu-doped and group-V doped CdTe PERC devices. To tackle this challenge, we develop robust nanofabrication and characterization platform to study CdTe PERC devices consisting of a patterned Al 2 O 3 layer on CdSe( 1-x )Te x (Cu-doped, GrV-doped; x = 0 to 1; CST). First Solar supplies high-quality CST materials. The dark and light I-Vs under 1-sun illumination are extracted for a series of each set of devices. We perform quantitative and qualitative PV analysis for a series of Cu-doped and Gr-V doped PERC devices, showing notably different V oc changes for GrV-doped compared to Cu-doped PERC devices. This project attempts to produce individual contacts on single grains and grain boundaries to measure lateral transport. As a model system, we use a CdSe( 1-x )Te x film on glass prepared by a colossal grain growth (CGG) technique at National Renewable Research Laboratories (NREL). Our preliminary results confirm that intergranular transport is hindered by the electrical barrier formed near grain boundaries. The PERC fabrication and the lateral transport measurement platform developed in this project can easily be applied to other types of advanced CdSe( 1-x )Te x architectures to better understand local photocarrier transport, in turn, providing the fundamental knowledge to improve the performance of CdTe PVs.
