SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Theory Manual (V.5.0)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

SIERRA/Aero Theory Manual - Version 5.8

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment.

Quantum-Hardware Focused Application Performance Benchmarks (Final Technical Report)

Quantum computers promise to transform how we do scientific calculations. In this project, we benchmark different current quantum computers for solving chemistry problems and find ways to build noise-resilient implementations. We also use the characterization techniques developed to test ion trap quantum computers.

Monitor support on accelerated processing device

A technique for implementing synchronization monitors on an accelerated processing device (“APD”) is provided. Work on an APD includes workgroups that include one or more wavefronts. All wavefronts of a workgroup execute on a single compute unit. A monitor is a synchronization construct that allows workgroups to stall until a particular condition is met. Responsive to all wavefronts of a workgroup executing a wait instruction, the monitor coordinator records the workgroup in an “entry queue.” The workgroup begins saving its state to a general APD memory and, when such saving is complete, the monitor coordinator moves the workgroup to a “condition queue.” When the condition specified by the wait instruction is met, the monitor coordinator moves the workgroup to a “ready queue,” and, when sufficient resources are available on a compute unit, the APD schedules the ready workgroup for execution on a compute unit.

Analysis of Tempered Fractional Operators

Tempered fractional operators provide an improved predictive capability for modeling anomalous effects that cannot be captured by standard partial differential equations. These effects include subdiffusion and superdiffusion (i.e. the mean square displacement in a diffusion process is proportional to a fractional power of the time), that often occur in, e.g., geoscience and hydrology. We analyze tempered fractional operators within the nonlocal vector calculus framework in order to assimilate them to the rigorous mathematical structure developed for nonlocal models. First, we show they are special instances of generalized nonlocal operators by means of a proper choice of the nonlocal kernel. Then, we present a plan for showing tempered fractional operators are equivalent to truncated fractional operators. These truncated operators are useful because they are less computationally intensive than the tempered operators.

Spherical Parameter Estimation and MPDV Applications

A new algebraic least square approach is presented for estimating effective zero center for verification of MPDV(Multichannel Photon Doppler Velocimetry) probe designs. Unlike previous algebraic least square methods for spherical parameter estimation, the new method can be shown to be concise in mathematic formulations, easy of computations, invariant under rigid -body transformations, no need for numerical approximations, and precise in dealing with precise data.

Performance analysis and data reduction for exascale scientific workflows

Chimbuko is the first in situ, scalable, workflow-level performance analysis tool for trace-level analysis and visualization of application performance. This tool was developed by the Co-design Center for Online Data Analysis and Reduction and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Exascale Computing Project. We provide a detailed description of Chimbuko’s architecture and illustrate our online and offline visualization with multiple use cases. We also present results for the deployment and scalability of the tool as applied to a high-energy physics workflow running at large scale on the Frontier supercomputer.

A two-level GPU-accelerated incomplete LU preconditioner for general sparse linear systems

This paper presents a parallel preconditioning approach based on incomplete LU (ILU) factorizations in the framework of Domain Decomposition (DD) for general sparse linear systems. We focus on distributed memory parallel architectures, specifically, those that are equipped with graphic processing units (GPUs). In addition to block-Jacobi, we present general purpose two-level ILU Schur complement-based approaches, where different strategies are presented to solve the coarse-level reduced system. These strategies are combined with modified ILU methods in the construction of the coarse-level operator, in order to effectively remove smooth errors by targeting an algebraically smooth vector. We leverage available GPU-based sparse matrix kernels to accelerate the setup and the solve phases of the proposed ILU preconditioner. We evaluate the efficiency of the proposed methods as a smoother for algebraic multigrid (AMG) and as a preconditioner for Krylov subspace methods on challenging anisotropic diffusion problems and a collection of general sparse matrices.
