Ultrasonic Testing of Mechanical Changes in a Water-Filled Pipe with Multi-Mode and Broadband Signals and Two-Level Compensation

Ultrasonic testing (UT) has been widely used for the Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) of pipes due to its many favorable characteristics. However, one of the main challenges in the general use of UT for real-world pipelines is the sensitivity of this method to environmental and operational condition changes. This paper proposes a new UT method with enhanced compensation for environmental effects and operational condition changes. In particular, the effectiveness of the new method is tested in the presence of temperature variations, and changes in water flow rate inside a stainless-steel pipe. The proposed UT method uses multi-mode and broadband guided ultrasonic waves in the pipe walls, excited and received by single-element ultrasonic sensors that are spatially separated, forming a measurement zone between any pair of such transmit and receive sensors. Amplitude changes, time shifts, and frequency content variations in the ultrasonic signal due to temperature changes and water flow are evaluated and compensated for reliable UT of mechanical changes in the pipe. It is observed that spurious effects of water flow on ultrasonic response, if not properly compensated, can dominate over effects due to actual mechanical changes, but such liquid-boundary effects can be compensated effectively by the proposed time- and frequency-filtering method.

Multi-Task Learning of Scanning Electron Microscopy and Synthetic Thermal Tomography Images for Detection of Defects in Additively Manufactured Metals

One of the key challenges in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing of metals is the appearance of microscopic pores in 3D-printed metallic structures. Quality control in LPBF can be accomplished with non-destructive imaging of the actual 3D-printed structures. Thermal tomography (TT) is a promising non-contact, non-destructive imaging method, which allows for the visualization of subsurface defects in arbitrary-sized metallic structures. However, because imaging is based on heat diffusion, TT images suffer from blurring, which increases with depth. We have been investigating the enhancement of TT imaging capability using machine learning. In this work, we introduce a novel multi-task learning (MTL) approach, which simultaneously performs the classification of synthetic TT images, and segmentation of experimental scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Synthetic TT images are obtained from computer simulations of metallic structures with subsurface elliptical-shaped defects, while experimental SEM images are obtained from imaging of LPBF-printed stainless-steel coupons. MTL network is implemented as a shared U-net encoder between the classification and the segmentation tasks. Results of this study show that the MTL network performs better in both the classification of synthetic TT images and the segmentation of SEM images tasks, as compared to the conventional approach when the individual tasks are performed independently of each other.

Four-Stage Multi-Physics Simulations to Assist Temperature Sensor Design for Industrial-Scale Coal-Fired Boiler

The growth of renewable energy sources presents a pressing challenge to the operation and maintenance of existing fossil fuel power plants, given that fossil fuel remains the predominant fuel source, responsible for over 60% of electricity generation in the United States. One of the main concerns within these fossil fuel power plants is the unpredictable failure of boiler tubes, resulting in emergency maintenance with significant economic and societal consequences. A reliable high-temperature sensor is necessary for in situ monitoring of boiler tubes and the safety of fossil fuel power plants. In this study, a comprehensive four-stage multi-physics computational framework is developed to assist the design, optimization installation, and operation of the high-temperature stainless-steel and quartz coaxial cable sensor (SSQ-CCS) for coal-fired boiler applications. With the consideration of various operation conditions, we predict the distributions of flue gas temperatures within coal-fired boilers, the temperature correlation between the boiler tube and SSQ-CCS, and the safety of SSQ-CCS. With the simulation-guided sensor installation plan, the newly designed SSQ-CCSs have been employed for field testing for more than 430 days. The computational framework developed in this work can guide the future operation of coal-fired plants and other power plants for the safety prediction of boiler operations.

Integration of Decentralized Graph-Based Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning with Digital Twin for Traffic Signal Optimization

Machine learning (ML) methods, particularly Reinforcement Learning (RL), have gained widespread attention for optimizing traffic signal control in intelligent transportation systems. However, existing ML approaches often exhibit limitations in scalability and adaptability, particularly within large traffic networks. This paper introduces an innovative solution by integrating decentralized graph-based multi-agent reinforcement learning (DGMARL) with a Digital Twin to enhance traffic signal optimization, targeting the reduction of traffic congestion and network-wide fuel consumption associated with vehicle stops and stop delays. In this approach, DGMARL agents are employed to learn traffic state patterns and make informed decisions regarding traffic signal control. The integration with a Digital Twin module further facilitates this process by simulating and replicating the real-time asymmetric traffic behaviors of a complex traffic network. The evaluation of this proposed methodology utilized PTV-Vissim, a traffic simulation software, which also serves as the simulation engine for the Digital Twin. The study focused on the Martin Luther King (MLK) Smart Corridor in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, by considering symmetric and asymmetric road layouts and traffic conditions. Comparative analysis against an actuated signal control baseline approach revealed significant improvements. Experiment results demonstrate a remarkable 55.38% reduction in Eco_PI, a developed performance measure capturing the cumulative impact of stops and penalized stop delays on fuel consumption, over a 24 h scenario. In a PM-peak-hour scenario, the average reduction in Eco_PI reached 38.94%, indicating the substantial improvement achieved in optimizing traffic flow and reducing fuel consumption during high-demand periods. These findings underscore the effectiveness of the integrated DGMARL and Digital Twin approach in optimizing traffic signals, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient traffic management system.

Approximating Nash Equilibrium in Day-ahead Electricity Market Bidding with Multi-agent Deep Reinforcement Learning

In this paper, a day-ahead electricity market bidding problem with multiple strategic generation company (GEN-CO) bidders is studied. The problem is formulated as a Markov game model, where GENCO bidders interact with each other todevelop their optimal day-ahead bidding strategies. Considering unobservable information in the problem, a model-free and data-driven approach, known as multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG), is applied for approximating the Nash equilibrium (NE) in the above Markov game. The MADDPG algorithm has the advantage of generalization due to the automatic feature extraction ability of the deep neural networks. The algorithm is tested on an IEEE 30-bus system with three competitive GENCO bidders in both an uncongested caseand a congested case. Comparisons with a truthful bidding strategy and state-of-the-art deep reinforcement learning methods including deep Q network and deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) demonstrate that the applied MADDPG algorithm can find a superior bidding strategy for all the market participants with increased profit gains. In addition, the comparison with a conventional model-based method shows that the MADDPG algorithm has higher computational efficiency, which is feasible for real-world applications.

Mean-field limit of a hybrid system for multi-lane car-truck traffic

In the present work we model multi-lane traffic flow in presence of two population of vehicles: cars and trucks. We first develop a finite-dimensional hybrid system which rely on continuous Bando-Follow-the-Leader dynamics coupled with discrete events motivated by the lane-change maneuvers. Then we rigorously prove that the mean-field limit is given by a system of Vlasov-type PDE with source terms generated by the lane-change maneuvers of the human-driven vehicles.
