Pyrotechnic hazards classification and evaluation program. Phase 2, segment 3: Test plan for determining hazards associated with pyrotechnic manufacturing processes

A comprehensive test plan for determining the hazards associated with pyrotechnic manufacturing processes is presented. The rationale for each test is based on a systematic analysis of historical accounts of accidents and a detailed study of the characteristics of each manufacturing process. The most hazardous manufacturing operations have been determined to be pressing, mixing, reaming, and filling. The hazard potential of a given situation is evaluated in terms of the probabilities of initiation, communication, and transition to detonation (ICT). The characteristics which affect the ICT probabilities include the ignition mechanisms which are present either in normal or abnormal operation, the condition and properties of the pyrotechnic material, and the configuration of the processing equipment. Analytic expressions are derived which describe the physical conditions of the system, thus permitting a variety of processes to be evaluated in terms of a small number of experiments.

A flight evaluation of VTOL jet transport under visual and simulated instrument conditions

A flight investigation was performed with the Dornier DO-31 VTOL to evaluate the performance, handling qualities, and operating characteristics that are considered to be important in the operation of a commerical VTOL transport in the terminal area. The DO-31, a 20,000 kilogram transport, has a mixed jet propulsion system; main engines with nozzles deflect from a cruise to a hover position, and vertical lift engines operated below 170 knots. This VTOL mode incorporates pitch and roll attitude and yaw rate stabilization. The tests concentrated on the transition, approach, and vertical landing. The mixed jet propulsion system provided a large usable performance envelope that enabled simulated IFR approaches to be made on 7 deg and 12 deg glide slopes. In these approaches management of thrust magnitude and direction was a primary problem, and some form of integrating the controls will be necessary. The handling qualities evaluation pointed out the need for additional research of define flight path criteria. The aircraft had satisfactory control and stability in hover out of ground effect. The recirculation effects in vertical landing were large below 15 meters.

Evaluation of boundary layer transition criteria for space shuttle orbiter entry

A comparison was made of the effect of boundary layer transition on center-line heating in a conical and a normal-shock flow field. It was shown that the time of transition onset (and, hence, the heating parameter) is significantly influenced by the choice of transition criterion in the normal-shock flow but that this parameter is much less sensitive to the transition criterion in a conical flow field. An evaluation of the effects of boundary layer transition on center-line heating in the conical flow field has shown that the temperatures are less affected by the use of various transition crieria than are heat loads. This difference is due to the delay in the time of transition onset predicted by those criteria with high transition Reynolds numbers. The criteria which predict the most severe thermal environment are those of fully turbulent flow throughout the entry, because transition occurs early in the trajectory for each of these criteria, they tend to predict similar values of maximum temperature and total heat load especially at center-line locations aft of 0.6. Evaluation of center-line heating generated by various trajectory shaping approaches has shown that the maximum surface temperature distribution was not significantly affected by the shaping technique. However, the heat load distribution is influenced, particularly on the forward portion of the vehicle.

A vacuum thermogravimetric method for outgassing evaluations of silicone-coated fiberglass cloth

A method for evaluating outgassing characteristics of space-sensitive materials was devised by modifying a thermogravimetric balance so that a continual weight loss trace is obtained as a function of time at constant temperature and nearly constant pressure. In addition the apparatus is capable of collecting room temperature condensibles during the outgassing run. A series of silicone-coated glass cloth samples were evaluated by this method. The major advantage of the technique is that data presentation is developed in the form of a continuous trace. This data can then be utilized to develop the kinetics of weight loss. The technique has been shown to be a useful and valid one for indicating small differences between materials under vacuum and elevated temperature conditions.

Noise measurements obtained during visual approach monitor evaluation in 747 aircraft

The results are reported of acoustic measurements made on the 747 aircraft during visual approach monitor evaluation approaches. This display is designed to improve approach and landing precision under visual flight rule conditions. The purpose of the acoustic portion of the test was to measure, evaluate, and identify the noise levels during various types of aircraft approaches. Six noise measurement sites were positioned on the centerline of the approach ground track. The six noise measurement stations on the approach ground track were positioned between approximately 1 and 6 nautical miles from runway threshold. The 1-nautical mile point was chosen as the beginning of the ground track because it is specified as the approach measurement point in the FAA noise certification requirements. The 6-nautical mile point was chosen for its proximity to the point where the approach is initiated.

Design evaluation in technology assessment: Illustrated by auditory impedance and sound distribution problems

Technology is considered as a culture for changing a physical world and technology assessment questions the inherent cultural capability to modify power and material in support of living organisms. A comprehensive goal-parameter-synthesis-criterion specification is presented as a basis for a rational assessment of technology. The thesis queries the purpose of the assessed problems, the factors considered, the relationships between factors, and the values assigned those factors to accomplish the appropriate purpose. Stationary and sequential evaluation of enviro-organismic systems are delegated to the responsible personalities involved in design; from promoter/designer through contractor to occupant. Discussion includes design goals derived from organismic factors, definitions of human responses which establish viable criteria and relevant correlation models, linking stimulus parameters, and parallel problem-discipline centered design organization. A consistent concept of impedance, as a degradation in the performance of a specified parameter, is introduced to overcome the arbitrary inoperative connotations of terms like noise, discomfort, and glare. Applications of the evaluative specification are illustrated through design problems related to auditory impedance and sound distribution.

A systems approach of the nondestructive evaluation techniques applied to Scout solid rocket motors.

Review and appraisal of the status of the nondestructive tests applied to Scout solid-propellant rocket motors, using analytical techniques to evaluate radiography for detecting internal discontinuities such as voids and unbonds. Information relating to selecting, performing, controlling, and evaluating the results of NDE tests was reduced to a common simplified format. With these data and the results of the analytical studies performed, it was possible to make the basic appraisals of the ability of a test to meet all pertinent acceptance criteria and, where necessary, provide suggestions to improve the situation.

Evaluation of solution procedures for material and/or geometrically nonlinear structural analysis by the direct stiffness method.

This paper presents an assessment of the solution procedures available for the analysis of inelastic and/or large deflection structural behavior. A literature survey is given which summarized the contribution of other researchers in the analysis of structural problems exhibiting material nonlinearities and combined geometric-material nonlinearities. Attention is focused at evaluating the available computation and solution techniques. Each of the solution techniques is developed from a common equation of equilibrium in terms of pseudo forces. The solution procedures are applied to circular plates and shells of revolution in an attempt to compare and evaluate each with respect to computational accuracy, economy, and efficiency. Based on the numerical studies, observations and comments are made with regard to the accuracy and economy of each solution technique.

Evaluation of Jacobian determinants by Monte Carlo methods - Application to the quasiclassical approximation in molecular scattering.

Sampling techniques have been used previously to evaluate Jacobian determinants that occur in classical mechanical descriptions of molecular scattering. These determinants also occur in the quasiclassical approximation. A new technique is described which can be used to evaluate Jacobian determinants which occur in either description. This method is expected to be valuable in the study of reactive scattering using the quasiclassical approximation.

Analytical and experimental evaluation of proposed ride comfort criteria

An exploratory study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of indices proposed by different investigators to relate vehicle vibrations to passenger comfort. The indices considered included criteria for sinusoidal vibrations, unweighted and weighted amplitude exceedance counts, the integral of the unweighted and weighted power spectral density and absorbed power. These functions were initially examined analytically to determine the manner in which they each weighed vibration amplitude and frequency. Similarities among them are noted. Index values were then computed from measured vibrations and compared with the associated comfort ratings. The data for these comparisons were obtained from ride comfort evaluations of passenger trains.

Ride evaluation in aerospace and surface vehicles

The vibration environment in a wide range of aerospace and surface vehicles is examined, and definitions related to ride evaluation are reviewed. Three provinces of research and application of ride data are recognized: (1) ride affecting passenger and operator comfort; (2) ride affecting human efficiency; and (3) ride affecting the health and safety of occupants occupationally or repeatedly exposed. Specific reference is made to the proposed ISO guide on human exposure to whole-body vibration. The applications as well as the advantages and limitations of this guide for evaluating vehicle ride are discussed. The derivation of the limits is reviewed with regard to the supporting data and the compromises necessary for wide applicability. Special discussions are included of the frequency and time dependence of these limits and approaches in progress for adjusting them according to different criteria of application.

Exploratory evaluation of ceramics for automobile thermal reactors

An exploratory evaluation of ceramics for automobile thermal reactors was conducted. Potential ceramic materials were evaluated in several reactor designs using both engine dynamometer and vehicle road tests. Silicon carbide contained in a corrugated metal support structure exhibited the best performance lasting over 800 hours in engine dynamometer tests and over 15,000 miles (24,200 km) of vehicle road tests. Reactors containing glass-ceramic components did not perform as well as silicon carbide. But the glass-ceramics still offer good potential for reactor use. The results of this study are considered to be a reasonable demonstration of the potential use of ceramics in thermal reactors.

Hydrogen-oxygen catalytic ignition and thruster investigation. Volume 1: Catalytic ignition and low pressure thruster evaluations

An experimental and analytical program was conducted to evaluate catalytic igniter operational limits, igniter scaling criteria, and delivered performance of cooled, flightweight gaseous hydrogen-oxygen reaction control thrusters. Specific goals were to: (1) establish operating life and environmental effects for both Shell 405-ABSG and Engelhard MFSA catalysts, (2) provide generalized igniter design guidelines for high response without flashback, and (3) to determine overall performance of thrusters at chamber pressures of 15 and 300 psia (103 and 2068 kN/sq m) and thrust levels of 30 and 1500 lbf, respectively. The experimental results have demonstrated the feasibility of reliable, high response catalytic ignition and the effectiveness of ducted chamber cooling for a high performance flightweight thruster. This volume presents the results of the catalytic igniter and low pressure thruster evaluations are presented.
