SEP full-scale wing technology development

A technology development program has generated a detail design of a lightweight 25 kW solar array for Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP). The fabrication and test of a full-scale array wing, 32.0 m x 4.06 m, is in progress to demonstrate technology readiness for fabrication, testing and flight of the large area lightweight solar array system. This paper presents the requirements for the 66 W/kg array and the component testing that has been performed to demonstrate technology readiness in the areas of SEP mission environmental survival, zero-gravity flat-fold array retraction, and NDT development testing. A zero-gravity test program was performed in the NASA KC-135 aircraft using a three-panel, full-width segment of the flat-fold array blanket with three degrees of panel stiffening. The full-scale solar array wing being fabricated is composed of three electrical modules, 76 x 200 cm, and mass simulator panels each 76 x 400 cm employing 2 x 4 cm glass slides (4.5 panels) and aluminum mass simulators (35 panels).

Automated Activation and Deactivation of a System Under Test

The MPLM Automated Activation/Deactivation application (MPLM means Multi-Purpose Logistic Module) was created with a three-fold purpose in mind: 1. To reduce the possibility of human error in issuing commands to, or interpreting telemetry from, the MPLM power, computer, and environmental control systems; 2. To reduce the amount of test time required for the repetitive activation/deactivation processes; and 3. To reduce the number of on-console personnel required for activation/ deactivation. All of these have been demonstrated with the release of the software. While some degree of automated end-item commanding had previously been performed for space-station hardware in the test environment, none approached the functionality and flexibility of this application. For MPLM activation, it provides mouse-click selection of the hardware complement to be activated, activates the desired hardware and verifies proper feedbacks, and alerts the user when telemetry indicates an error condition or manual intervention is required. For MPLM deactivation, the product senses which end items are active and deactivates them in the proper sequence. For historical purposes, an on-line log is maintained of commands issued and telemetry points monitored. The benefits of the MPLM Automated Activation/ Deactivation application were demonstrated with its first use in December 2002, when it flawlessly performed MPLM activation in 8 minutes (versus as much as 2.4 hours for previous manual activations), and performed MPLM deactivation in 3 minutes (versus 66 minutes for previous manual deactivations). The number of test team members required has dropped from eight to four, and in actuality the software can be operated by a sole (knowledgeable) system engineer.

Sample Acquisition and Instrument Deployment (SAID)

This report details the interim progress for contract NASW-4818, Sample Acquisition and Instrument Deployment (SAID), a robotic system for deploying science instruments and acquiring samples for analysis. The system is a conventional four degree of freedom manipulator 2 meters in length. A baseline design has been achieved through analysis and trade studies. The design considers environmental operating conditions on the surface of Mars, as well as volume constraints on proposed Mars landers. Control issues have also been studied, and simulations of joint and tip movements have been performed. A passively braked shape memory actuator with the ability to measure load has been developed. The wrist also contains a mechanism which locks the lid output to the bucket so that objects can be grasped and released for instrument deployment. The wrist actuator has been tested for operational power and mechanical functionality at Mars environmental conditions. The torque which the actuator can produce has been measured. Also, testing in Mars analogous soils has been performed.

Achievements and Prospects of Global Broadband Seismographic Networks After 30 Years of Continuous Geophysical Observations

Global seismographic networks (GSNs) emerged during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, facilitated by seminal international developments in theory, technology, instrumentation, and data exchange. The mid- to late-twentieth century saw the creation of the World-Wide Standardized Seismographic Network (1961) and International Deployment of Accelerometers (1976), which advanced global geographic coverage as seismometer bandwidth increased greatly allowing for the recording of the Earth's principal seismic spectrum. The modern era of global observations and rapid data access began during the 1980s, and notably included the inception of the GEOSCOPE initiative (1982) and GSN (1988). Through continual improvements, GEOSCOPE and the GSN have realized near-real time recording of ground motion with state-of-art data quality, dynamic range, and timing precision to encompass 180 seismic stations, many in very remote locations. Data from GSNs are increasingly integrated with other geophysical data (e.g., space geodesy, infrasound and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar). Globally distributed seismic data are critical to resolving crust, mantle, and core structure; illuminating features of the plate tectonic and mantle convection system; rapid characterization of earthquakes; identification of potential tsunamis; global nuclear test verification; and provide sensitive proxies for environmental changes. As the global geosciences community continues to advance our understanding of Earth structure and processes controlling elastic wave propagation, GSN infrastructure offers a springboard to realize increasingly multi-instrument geophysical observatories. Here, we review the historical, scientific, and monitoring heritage of GSNs, summarize key discoveries, and discuss future associated opportunities for Earth Science.

Multidimensional modeling of non-equilibrium plasma generated by a radio-frequency corona discharge

Low-temperature plasma (LTP) ignition concepts rely on the production of radical and charged species to speed up the onset of combustion in spark-ignition engines. These features are responsible for the superior performance of LTP igniters under extremely dilute combustion operation that is not achievable by conventional spark igniters. Additionally, LTP discharges extend the lifetime of the igniters, due to the avoidance of spark processes. For these reasons, the engine research community and the automotive industry have shown growing interest in this technology in the recent years. As of today, computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) codes typically used by the multi-dimensional engine modeling community do not have reliable models to describe LTP ignition processes. One key missing piece of information is the physical and chemical properties of the plasma and their effect on combustion ignition. Most non-equilibrium plasma simulations reported in literature are based on simplified, canonical geometries, with simple discharge excitation schemes. Here we conduct multi-dimensional modeling of the non-equilibrium plasma generated by an application-relevant radio-frequency (RF) corona discharge in air. Three test cases are simulated, characterized by different environmental pressure levels and peak electrode voltage values at room temperature. Streamer penetration, electron number density, atomic oxygen production, and bulk gas temperature distribution in the first 10 sinusoidal pulses are presented and discussed. This model can be used as a key tool for an in-depth understanding of RF-corona discharge for automotive applications and provides the basis for future implementations of dedicated LTP ignition models in CFD codes.

A Low-Flow Marine Hydrokinetic Turbine for a Floating Unmanned Mobile Platform

Design and fabrication of a marine hydrokinetic turbine for deployment from a floating unmanned autonomous mobile catamaran platform is described. The objective is to develop a low-flow current turbine for deployment from a floating mobile catamaran USV platform. An undershot water wheel has been selected as the turbine of choice and a WAM-V 16 catamaran has been selected as the USV platform. The concept of operation is that the USV platform would autonomously seek and navigate to a coastal location where coastal or tidal currents may be present, anchor at the location, and deploy the turbine to harness the current energy, convert it to electricity and store it in onboard battery banks. The prototype system being developed is targeted at supporting development of self-powered autonomous mobile recharge stations for unmanned aerial vehicles in coastal zones. Once implemented on the vehicle, open water tests are planned for a range of environmental conditions, involving tidal and coastal currents, and system configurations. The status of the ongoing effort will be discussed.

Chemical durability assessment of enhanced low-activity waste glasses through EPA method 1313

In this work, we report the progress of the Glass Leaching Assessment for Durability (GLAD) program on the implementation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Leaching Environmental Assessment Framework pH-dependent leach test (EPA Method 1313) to low-activity nuclear waste (LAW) glasses. The GLAD program seeks to develop new strategies to understand the chemical durability of nuclear waste glasses for the disposal in near-surface conditions. A series of 16 high-waste loading LAW glasses, currently under development, were selected using machine learning methods to study the corrosion behavior using EPA Method 1313. Reacted glass powders were examined using scanning electron microscopy and the eluate compositions were examined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. Compositional modeling was used to fit the measured elemental releases from EPA Method 1313. The compositional models demonstrated that elements such as Si reduce elemental release while B can increase elemental release (consistent with elemental modeling of the Product Consistency Test and Vapor Hydration Test) while other elements, such as Fe, exhibit pH-dependent behavior. The amount of acid added during the EPA testing was found to significantly impact the observed result, which was only apparent after preforming the present matrix study. The overall titration curves were able to be compositionally modeled for future process optimization.

Active Reservoir Management Engineering and Evaluation Summary – Brine Extraction and Storage Test Phase II Final Report – Volumes 1-3

The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) conducted a multiyear program over two phases to perform a field study of the potential efficacy of formation water extraction during carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) injection for CO 2 storage as a means of improving efficiency and/or effectiveness. Phase I was a 2-year study on potential methodologies for a field study of pressure management, culminating in site selection and experimental and site design. Phase II was a 7-year effort that involved constructing site facilities, conducting experiments, and evaluating collected field data. The experimental portion was split into two collaborative components, one for the active reservoir management (ARM) experiment and a second component to host and demonstrate potential water treatment technologies appropriate for high-saline brine at the project site. The results of the overall project are expected to benefit future saline storage projects through validation of techniques that may reduce stress on sealing formations, increase storage capacity, and reduce area of review. The following report focuses on the Phase II ARM experimental implementation and results. A second companion report summarizes the results of the high-saline brine demonstrations.

Chemical clocks: using otolith geochemistry to enhance estimation of age and growth of white hake (Urophycis tenuis)

The white hake (Urophycis tenuis) is a groundfish distributed throughout the Gulf of Maine. Catch advice is based on stock assessments done with age-based population dynamics models; however, otolith aging is challenging because of unclear growth increments. To address this concern, we compared the consistency of aging with counts of visual annuli to that of aging with cycles of elemental concentrations measured by using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. We tested the hypothesis that oscillations in both environmental conditions and internal physiology through time influence uptake of elements during otolith mineralization. Concentrations of manganese, in comparison with those of the other investigated trace elements (magnesium, strontium, and barium), had the most promising correlation with visual growth increments (~100% age agreement, ±1 year), offering an additional tool to enhance increment identification. In our examination of 550 otoliths collected during 2007–2021, we found that white hake lived a maximum of 10.3 years and exhibited sexual dimorphism in maximum length and age. By using generated von Bertalanffy growth functions, L(t)=110(1–e–0.113(t+0.45)) for males and L(t)=140(1–e–0.113(t–0.30)) for females (where L(t) is length at time t), size and age at maturity were calculated for males (37.4 cm in total length (TL), 3.3 years) and females (47.4 cm TL, 4.2 years). These results demonstrate that otolith geochemistry can be used to improve the accuracy and precision of the estimation of fish age and maturity, even for challenging species.

Panel flutter

Criteria are presented for the prediction of panel flutter, determination of its occurrence, design for its prevention, and evaluation of its severity. Theoretical analyses recommended for the prediction of flutter stability boundaries, vibration amplitudes, and frequencies for several types of panels are described. Vibration tests and wind tunnel tests are recommended for certain panels and environmental flow conditions to provide information for design of verification analysis. Appropriate design margins on flutter stability boundaries are given and general criteria are presented for evaluating the severity of possible short-duration, limited-amplitude panel flutter on nonreusable vehicles.

Animal exposure during burn tests

An animal exposure test system has been designed and fabricated for the purpose of collecting physiological and environmental (temperature) data from animal subjects exposed to combustion gases in large scale fire tests. The AETS consists of an open wire mesh, two-compartment cage, one containing an exercise wheel for small rodents, and the other containing one rat instrumented externally for electrocardiogram and respiration. The ECG and respiration sensors are located in a belt placed around the torso of the subject, electrode wires forming an umbilical to a connector in the top of the compartment. A cable extends from the connector to the power supply and signal conditioning electronics. These are connected to a dual-beam oscilloscope for real time monitoring and a magnetic tape recorder having three or more channels. Endpoints observed are bradycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, changes in respiratory pattern, respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest. The ECG record also appears to be a good method of monitoring animal activity as indicated by an increase in EMG noise superimposed on the record during increased activity of the torso musculature. Examples of the recordings are presented and discussed as to their significance regarding toxicity of fire gases.

A Representative Shuttle Environmental Control System

The Representative Shuttle Environmental Control System (RSECS) provides a ground test bed to be used in the early accumulation of component and system operating data, the evaluation of potential system improvements, and possibly the analysis of Shuttle Orbiter test and flight anomalies. Selected components are being subjected to long term tests to determine endurance and corrosion resistance capability prior to Orbiter vehicle experience. Component and system level tests in several cases are being used to support flight certification of Orbiter hardware. These activities are conducted as a development program to allow for timeliness, flexibility, and cost effectiveness not possible in a program burdened by flight documentation and monitoring constraints.

Improved microbial-check-valve resins

Improved microbial-check-valve resins have been tested for their microbicidal effectiveness and long-term stability. Resins give more-stable iodine concentrations than previous preparations and do not impart objectionable odor or taste to treated water. Microbial check valve is small cylindrical device, packed with iodide-saturated resin, that is installed in water line where contamination by micro-organisms is to be prevented. Prototype microbial check valve was tested for stability and performance under harsh environmental conditions. Effectiveness was 100 percent at 35 deg, 70 deg, and 160 deg F (2 deg, 21 deg, and 71 deg C).

Animal Exposure During Burn Tests

An animal exposure test system (AETS) was designed and fabricated for the purpose of collecting physiological and environmental (temperature) data from animal subjects exposed to combustion gases in large scale fire tests. The AETS consisted of an open wire mesh, two-compartment cage, one containing an exercise wheel for small rodents, and the other containing one rat instrumented externally for electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiration. Cage temperature is measured by a thermistor located in the upper portion of the rat compartment. Animal activity is monitored by the ECG and the records indicate an increase in EMG (electromyograph) noise super-imposed by the increased activity of the torso musculature. Examples of the recordings are presented and discussed as to their significance regarding toxicity of fire gases and specific events occurring during the test. The AETS was shown to be a useful tool in screening materials for the relative toxicity of their outgassing products during pyrolysis and combustion.
