Solute clustering in polycrystals: Unveiling the interplay of grain boundary junction and long-range solute attraction effects

Spectral analysis of local atomic environments has become a powerful tool for studying solute atom segregation and interactions at grain boundaries in nanocrystalline alloys. When applied to individual grain boundaries, the spectral analysis has shown that solute-solute interaction can be either attractive or repulsive, with long-range relative attraction enhancing the likelihood for solute atoms to begin clustering. In this article, we combine this analysis with a new grain-boundary structure descriptor based on grain-boundary atom coordination, to investigate the impact of grain-boundary junctions on solute atom segregation in polycrystals. Specifically, we systematically characterize the tendency of solute clusters to begin forming at various types of ordinary grain boundaries, triple junctions, and high-order junctions in Ag polycrystals containing either Ni or Cu solute atoms. Our findings demonstrate that the formation of solute clusters at grain boundaries is primarily driven by long-range relative solute attraction, rather than short-range solute-solute interactions. Furthermore, this effect is most pronounced near grain-boundary junctions. Our study highlights the multiscale nature of solute segregation at crystalline interfaces and provides new insights into the complex phenomena governing heterogeneous solute segregation in grain-boundary networks.

Hydrophobic Metal–Organic Frameworks Enable Superior High-Pressure Ammonia Storage through Geometric Design

Hydrophobic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are typically overlooked for ammonia storage due to weak host–guest interactions. Here, we demonstrate that four structurally analogous aluminum-based MOFs exhibit a counterintuitive behavior whereby framework geometry, rather than ligand hydrophilicity, determines high-pressure NH 3 adsorption performance. The hydrophobic CAU-23 achieved an exceptional capacity matching hydrophilic analogs despite its poor low-pressure uptake. This pressure-dependent enhancement stems from the unique 4-cis-4-trans geometry of CAU-23 compared to the purely cis arrangement of MIL-160 and KMF-1 and the alternating cis-trans configuration of MOF-303. Critically, CAU-23 retained 95% capacity over three high-pressure cycles, whereas hydrophilic MOFs suffered 39–46% irreversible losses due to strong NH 3 -framework interactions that compromise structural integrity. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations reveal that high pressure enables NH 3 clustering through intermolecular hydrogen bonding, bypassing the need for strong host–guest interactions. High-pressure powder X-ray diffraction measurements confirm the exceptional mechanical resilience of CAU-23, showing complete structural recovery upon decompression despite exhibiting the highest pressure sensitivity among the studied MOFs. An extended analog, HE-CAU-23, validates this design principle with further enhanced capacity. Furthermore, these findings reveal a paradigm shift toward hydrophobic MOFs with optimized geometry for high-performance and regenerable gas storage applications.

Atomic arrangements in an amorphous CoFeB ribbon extracted via an analysis of radial distribution functions

Here we discuss the atomic structure of amorphous ferromagnetic FeCoB alloys, which are used widely in spintronics applications. Specifically, we obtain the pair-distribution functions for various atomic pairs based on high-energy x-ray diffraction data taken from an amorphous Co 20 Fe 61 B 19 specimen. We start our reverse Monte Carlo cycles to determine the disordered structure with a two-phase model in which a small amount of cobalt is mixed with Fe 23 B 6 as a second phase. The structure of the alloy is found to be heterogeneous, where the boron atoms drive disorder through the random occupation of the atomic network. Our analysis also indicates the presence of small cobalt clusters that are embedded in the iron matrix and percolating the latter throughout the structure. This morphology can explain the enhanced spin polarization observed in amorphous magnetic materials.

The Galaxy–Galaxy Strong Lensing Cross Section and the Internal Distribution of Matter in ΛCDM Substructure

Abstract Strong gravitational lensing offers a powerful probe of the detailed distribution of matter in lenses, while magnifying and bringing faint background sources into view. Observed strong lensing by massive galaxy clusters, which are often in complex dynamical states, has also been used to map their dark matter (DM) substructures on smaller scales. Deep high-resolution imaging has revealed the presence of strong lensing events associated with these substructures, namely galaxy-scale sub-halos. However, an inventory of these observed galaxy–galaxy strong lensing (GGSL) events is noted to be discrepant with state-of-the-art ΛCDM simulations. Cluster sub-halos appear to be over-concentrated compared to their simulated counterparts yielding an order-of-magnitude higher value of GGSL. In this paper, we explore the possibility of resolving this observed discrepancy by redistributing the mass within observed cluster sub-halos in ways that are consistent within the ΛCDM paradigm of structure formation. Lensing mass reconstructions from data provide constraints on the mass enclosed within apertures and are agnostic to the detailed mass profile within them. Therefore, as the detailed density profile within cluster sub-halos currently remains unconstrained by data, we are afforded the freedom to redistribute the enclosed mass. We investigate if rearranging the mass to a more centrally concentrated density profile helps alleviate the GGSL discrepancy. We report that refitting cluster sub-halos to the ubiquitous ΛCDM-motivated Navarro–Frenk–White profile, and further modifying them to include significant baryonic components, does not resolve this tension. A resolution to this persisting GGSL discrepancy may require more careful exploration of alternative DM models.

Towards complete assignment of the infrared spectrum of the protonated water cluster H + (H 2 O) 21

The spectroscopic features of protonated water species in dilute acid solutions have been long sought after for understanding the microscopic behavior of the proton in water with gas-phase water clusters H + (H 2 O) n extensively studied as bottom-up model systems. We present a new protocol for the calculation of the infrared (IR) spectra of complex systems, which combines the fragment-based Coupled Cluster method and anharmonic vibrational quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, and demonstrate its accuracy towards the complete and accurate assignment of the IR spectrum of the H + (H 2 O) 21 cluster. The site-specific IR spectral signatures reveal two distinct structures for the internal and surface four-coordinated water molecules, which are ice-like and liquid-like, respectively. The effect of inter-molecular interaction between water molecules is addressed, and the vibrational resonance is found between the O-H stretching fundamental and the bending overtone of the nearest neighboring water molecule. The revelation of the spectral signature of the excess proton offers deeper insight into the nature of charge accommodation in the extended hydrogen-bonding network underpinning this aqueous cluster.

In the first F site, F is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one As atom. In the second F site, F is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one As atom. In the third F site, F is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one As atom. In the fourth F site, F is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one As atom. In the fifth F site, F is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one As atom. In the sixth F site, F is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one As atom. In each Xe2S(OF)3 cluster, there are two inequivalent Xe sites. In the first Xe site, Xe is bonded in a linear geometry to one O and one F atom. The Xe–O bond length is 2.31 Å. The Xe–F bond length is 2.01 Å. In the second Xe site, Xe is bonded in a linear geometry to one O and one F atom. The Xe–O bond length is 2.29 Å. The Xe–F bond length is 2.02 Å. S is bonded in a tetrahedral geometry to three O and one F atom. There are a spread of S–O bond distances ranging from 1.42–1.50 Å. The S–F bond length is 1.57 Å. There are three inequivalent O sites. In the first O site, O is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one S atom. In the second O site, O is bonded in a distorted bent 120 degrees geometry to one Xe and one S atom. In the third O site, O is bonded in a distorted bent 120 degrees geometry to one Xe and one S atom. There are three inequivalent F sites. In the first F site, F is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Xe atom. In the second F site, F is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one S atom. In the third F site, F is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Xe atom.
