Quantum Sensing Experiments at SQMS

The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, led by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, is one of five U.S. Department of Energy-funded research centers dedicated to advancing quantum computing and quantum sensing. SQMS leverages its expertise in superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities and transmon qubits to develop sensitive quantum sensors to probe fundamental physics. This presentation will highlight the progress and innovations in SQMS’s quantum sensing thrust, with a particular focus on searches for particles beyond the Standard Model, dark matter candidates, and gravitational waves. Recent developments include the search for dark photon dark matter using transmon qubits and widely tunable superconducting cavities (4 GHz–7 GHz), a quantum-enhanced axion dark matter search employing an itinerant single microwave photon counter, and efforts to detect low-mass axions and high-frequency gravitational waves using multimode superconducting cavities.

The 4-D guidance of STOL aircraft in the terminal area

Advanced STOL aircraft for the improvement of the nation's air transportation system by the elimination of delays and congestions associated with today's air travel are discussed. A new guidance technique, referred to as 4-D guidance, is being developed for STOL aircraft. The 4-D guidance technique synthesizes complex three-dimensional flight paths from a minimum set of input and files the aircraft along the paths according to a prespecified time schedule. The two major elements of a 4-D guidance system are the trajectory synthesizer and the control law. Inputs to the trajectory synthesizer are the three-dimensional coordinates of way points, the turning radii, the speed ranges, the acceleration limits, and the arrival times at time control way points. First, the three-dimensional trajectory is computed by using circular arcs and straight lines. Then the airspeed profile, compensated for wind, is calculated to achieve the desired arrival times. The synthesized trajectory is stored as a time sequence of reference states which the aircraft is forced to track by using a linear feedback law.

Four-D guidance of STOL aircraft in the terminal area

The primary objective of advanced STOL aircraft is the improvement of the nation's air transportation system by the elimination of delays and congestions associated with today's air travel. Scramjet nozzle design and analysis as applied to a highly integrated hypersonic research airplane

The configuration and performance of the propulsion system for the hypersonic research vehicle are discussed. A study of the interactions between propulsion and aerodynamics of the highly integrated vehicle was conducted. The hypersonic research vehicle is configured to test the technology of structural and thermal protection systems concepts and the operation of the propulsion system under true flight conditions for most of the hypersonic flight regime. The subjects considered are: (1) research vehicle and scramjet engine configurations to determine fundamental engine sizing constraints, (2) analytical methods for computing airframe and propulsion system components, and (3) characteristics of a candidate nozzle to investigate vehicle stability and acceleration performance.

Radiative cooling in shock-heated hydrogen-helium plasmas

Axial and off-axis radiative cooling of cylindrical shock-heated hydrogen-helium plasmas is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The coupled fluid dynamic-radiative transfer equations are solved by a combination of approximation techniques aimed at simplifying the computation of the flux divergence term, namely, the quasi-isothermal approximation and the exponential approximation developed for the solid angle integration. The accuracy of the approximation schemes has been assessed and found acceptable for applying the methods to the rapid computation of the radiatively coupled flow problem. Radiative cooling experiments were conducted in a 6-inch annular arc accelerator shock tube (ANAA) for an initial pressure of 1 torr and shock speeds from 35 to 45 Km/sec. The results indicate that the lateral cooling is small compared with the axial cooling, and that better agreement is achieved between the data and the theoretical results by inclusion of the lateral temperature gradient.

Investigation of hypersonic rarefied flow on a spherical nose of the AOTV

The Navier-Stokes (NS) equations were integrated numerically for investigating the flow characteristics on the forepart of the spherical nose of a space vehicle such as the AOTV or AFE by a modified Accelerated Successive Replacement (ASR) scheme under hypersonic rarefied conditions. Technical feasibility of the mathematical approach was demonstrated by computing the flowfield on a spherical nose under conditions that the AFE encounters at times t = 15 and 20 seconds after its reentry into the atmosphere. Local similar solutions for the merged layer flow along the stagnation line of the sphere were developed. These are correct to the same degree of accuracy as the NS equations. These solutions provided stagnation line boundary conditions for the domain of integration on the spherical noise. Also, a parametric study of the stagnation line solution was made with a view to understand the flow characteristics in tunnels with different ambient fluids. Analytical expressions for surface slip temperature, jump conditions, and concentration level in the presence of the real gas effects at the top of the Knudsen layer were derived and used to calculate the stagnation line flowfield with nonequilibrium dissociation and ionization. A number of graphics were drawn to illustrate the basic physics of the flowfields. The present analysis can be extended to include real gas effects and to bodies of arbitrary shapes. It can further provide boundary conditions for integrating the NS equations in the near wake region.

Prediction of magnetic orientation in driver gas associated -Bz events

The source regions of five strong -Bz events detected at 1 AU for which solar sources were identified by Tang et al. (1989) and Tsurutani et al. (1992) are investigated in order to determine whether the magnetic orientation of driver gas in the interplanetary medium observed at the earth can be predicted when its solar source is identified. Three -Bz events were traced to flare-associated coronal mass ejections (CMEs), one to an eruptive prominence associated CME, and one to three possible solar sources. The computed magnetic orientations at the candidate 'release height' (the height where the front of a CME ceases to accelerate) above the flare sites associated with CMEs show the existence of the expected southward field component. It is concluded that the magnetic orientation in flare-associated CME generated driver gas may be predictable.

Multiblock, Multigrid Solution Of Euler Equations

Method of numerical solution of Euler equations of three-dimensional flow of compressible fluid involves combination of multiblock and multigrid strategies. In multiblock strategy, flow field divided, into multiple smaller, more computationally-convenient zones and computational grid fitted to applicable flow boundaries generated in each block. In multigrid strategy used here, different quantities computed, variously, on finer or coarser grids. Minimizing cost of computation by using fewest grid points yielding acceptably accurate values of affected variable. Multigrid strategy found effective in accelerating convergence to steady state, while multiblock strategy provides geometric flexibility.

A Method for Implementing Force-Limited Vibration Control

NASA/GSFC has implemented force-limited vibration control on a controller which can only accept one profile. The method uses a personal computer based digital signal processing board to convert force and/or moment signals into what appears to he an acceleration signal to the controller. This technique allows test centers with older controllers to use the latest force-limited control techniques for random vibration testing. The paper describes the method, hardware, and test procedures used. An example from a test performed at NASA/GSFC is used as a guide.

Disuse bone loss in hindquarter suspended rats: partial weightbearing, exercise and ibandronate treatment as countermeasures

The purpose of this study was to evaluate potential countermeasures for bone loss during long-term space missions in the hindquarter suspended rat, including partial weight bearing (surrogate for artificial gravity) episodic full weight bearing (2 hour/day full weight bearing) and treatment with the third generation bisphosphonate ibandronate (Roche). Graded mechanical loading was studied by housing the animals on a novel servo controlled force plate system which permitted the titration of mechanical force at varying frequency and amplitude and different levels of weight bearing. The force plate, which forms the cage floor, is a glass platform supported by an 18" diameter speaker cone filled with expanding polyurethane foam. An infrared optical sensor attached to the speaker cone yields a voltage linearly related to vertical displacement of the glass platform. The dynamic force on the paw was computed as a product of the apparent mass of the animal on the platform at rest and the acceleration of the platform determined from the second derivative of the optical sensor output. The mass of the animal on the platform was varied by adjusting tension on the tether suspending the animal. Mechanical impact loading was titrated with the force plate resonating at different frequencies, including 3 Hz and 16 Hz.

MIRO Computational Model

A computational model calculates the excitation of water rotational levels and emission-line spectra in a cometary coma with applications for the Micro-wave Instrument for Rosetta Orbiter (MIRO). MIRO is a millimeter-submillimeter spectrometer that will be used to study the nature of cometary nuclei, the physical processes of outgassing, and the formation of the head region of a comet (coma). The computational model is a means to interpret the data measured by MIRO. The model is based on the accelerated Monte Carlo method, which performs a random angular, spatial, and frequency sampling of the radiation field to calculate the local average intensity of the field. With the model, the water rotational level populations in the cometary coma and the line profiles for the emission from the water molecules as a function of cometary parameters (such as outgassing rate, gas temperature, and gas and electron density) and observation parameters (such as distance to the comet and beam width) are calculated.

Mars Global Climate Modeling.

Scientists use Global Climate Models (GCMs) to better under the current and past climate states of terrestrial (solid surface) bodies in our solar system and beyond, and the physical processes that control them. GCMs are complex, multi-dimensional computer codes that can generally be divided into two parts: the geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) framework, which represents accelerations and spatially resolved processes, and the physics routines, which provide the forcing functions for the circulation. Producing a GCM that is appropriate for a particular body—Mars, for example—requires implementing the appropriate physics routines (e.g., radiative transfer, planetary boundary layer physics, dust lifting physics to generate dust storms, etc.) for that body. In this talk, I will give an overview of the components of the NASA Ames Mars GCM and discuss some of the scientific questions we address with this state-of-the-art numerical model.
