Microwave‐Assisted Synthesis of SrTiO 3 Nanocuboids without TiCl 4

Strontium titanate (STO) nanocuboids are a novel support for Pt nanoparticle catalysts (Pt/STO). The first of many steps in commercializing Pt/STO will be developing a scalable, environmentally sustainable, and cost‐effective STO nanocuboid synthesis. Herein, Sr–Ti–OH mixtures are synthesized from various Sr 2+ and Ti 4+ reagents and treated by convection‐ and microwave‐assisted heating to obtain STO nanoparticles. These experiments clarify how phase composition of the prehydrothermal Sr–Ti–OH mixture and choice of heating method affect final nanoparticle morphology. In Sr–Ti–OH mixtures synthesized with TiCl 4 , STO is the most stable phase and precipitates prior to heating, while titania sol–gels are the most stable phase when other Ti 4+ sources are used. STO nanocrystals always form when Sr–Ti–OH mixtures are treated by convection heating, though nanocuboids are only observed if STO precipitates from the Sr–Ti–OH mixture. Microwave‐assisted hydrothermal treatment more rapidly heats the precursor solution, and thus, STO nanocuboids can form from a variety of Sr–Ti–OH mixtures regardless of mixture composition. Two microwave syntheses of STO nanocuboids are reported: one which uses TiCl 4 as a Ti 4+ source, and another that uses titanium(IV) bis(ammonium lactato) dihydroxide ([NH 4 CH 3 CH(O)CO 2 ] 2 Ti(OH) 2 ), a water‐stable Ti 4+ complex.

Validation of turbulence intensity as simulated by the Weather Research and Forecasting model off the US northeast coast

We report turbulence intensity (TI) is often used to quantify the strength of turbulence in wind energy applications and serves as the basis of standards in wind turbine design. Thus, accurately characterizing the spatiotemporal variability in TI should lead to improved predictions of power production. Nevertheless, turbulence measurements over the ocean are far less prevalent than over land due to challenges in instrumental deployment, maintenance, and operation. Atmospheric models such as mesoscale (weather prediction) and large-eddy simulation (LES) models are commonly used in the wind energy industry to assess the spatial variability of a given site. However, the TI derivation from atmospheric models has not been well examined. An algorithm is proposed in this study to realize online calculation of TI in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Simulated TI is divided into two components depending on scale, including sub-grid (parameterized based on turbulence kinetic energy (TKE)) and grid resolved. The sensitivity of sea surface temperature (SST) on simulated TI is also tested. An assessment is performed by using observations collected during a field campaign conducted from February to June 2020 near the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory. Results show that while simulated TKE is generally smaller than the lidar-observed value, wind speed bias is usually small. Overall, this leads to a slight underestimation in sub-grid-scale estimated TI. Improved SST representation subsequently reduces model biases in atmospheric stability as well as wind speed and sub-grid TI near the hub height. Large TI events in conjunction with mesoscale weather systems observed during the studied period pose a challenge to accurately estimating TI from models. Due to notable uncertainty in accurately simulating those events, this suggests summing up sub-grid and resolved TI may not be an ideal solution. Efforts in further improving skills in simulating mesoscale flow and cloud systems are necessary as the next steps.

Insights into radiation resistance of titanium alloys from displacement cascade simulations

Radiation damage in beam window materials limits the use of high power proton beams in high energy physics research. The alloy Ti-6Al-4V is presently used as a beam window material but a prospective alternative, Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al has been proposed. Since both these alloys contain dual phases at room temperature, we compare the radiation damage in the α and ß-phases of these two materials via primary knock-on atom (PKA) cascade simulations in the 10-40keV energy range. At PKA energies 30 and 40keV, the number of Frenkel pairs in the ballistic stage is higher in the ß-phase of Ti-6Al-4V than that in the ß-phase of Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al almost by a factor of 2. The α-phase, of both these alloys, by far outperforms the ß-phases of the two alloys, both in terms of damage during the ballistic stage and in terms of the surviving defects. The average displacement threshold energy (E d ) in the α-phase of both alloys was found to be 66eV while that in the ß-phase of Ti-15-3 was 55 eV and in the ß-phase of Ti-6-4 was 46. Further, while the number of surviving defects is almost equal in both alloys, the vacancy and interstitial clustering mechanisms differ notably, which can impact the degree of radiation hardening and loss of ductility. Our simulations show larger vacancy and interstitial clusters form in Ti-6Al-4V as compared to that in Ti-15-3-3-3 alloy. These results indicate that Ti-15-3-3-3 alloys may be a promising candidate for next generation beam window material with a higher radiation tolerance than the existing Ti-6-4 alloy.
