Measurements of L-shell X-ray Emission lines of Neonlike Europium on an Electron Beam Ion Trap

We report a measurement of the two X-ray transitions that proceed from the (1s22s22p51∕23d3∕2)J=1 and (1s22s1/22p63p1/2)J =1 upper levels to the (1s22s22p6)J =0 ground level in neonlike Eu53+ (Z = 63), that is, near the previously documented avoided crossing of the two upper levels at Z = 68. The measurement was carried out using the calorimeter spectrometer on the Livermore EBIT-I electron beam ion trap. It affirms the trends set by the neighboring neonlike ions both in terms of the relative intensity of the two lines and in terms of the magnitude of disagreement with theoretical energy level predictions.

Understanding Atmospheric Absorption Effects on UV Spectra from Sounding Rockets using a Spherical-Shells Model

Our team is working on building and calibrating the FURST sounding rocket, with an expected launch in mid-2023. The goal is to image the most complete and highest resolution UV spectra to date. To do this, preciseradiometric and wavelength calibration techniques have been developed. We describe below our model of O2 atmospheric absorption and couple that with simulated FURST images. With a high-enough SNR, we canestimate our ability to use absorption peaks for calibration, or for back-calculating atmospheric properties. If data is available, this method could be applied to older sounding rocket data to find hidden science.

Loft: An Automated Mesh Generator for Stiffened-Shell Aerospace Vehicles

Loft is an automated mesh generation code designed for aerospace vehicle structures. Based on user input, it can generate meshes for wings, noses, tanks, fuselage sections, thrust structures, etc. As the mesh is generated, each element is assigned properties that mark what part of the vehicle it is associated with. This property assignment is an extremely powerful feature making possible detailed analysis tasks such as load application and sizing. Loft can save its meshes in NASTRAN bulk data deck, EDS’ I-DEAS Universal File format, Abaqus input file format, VRML 2.0 (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) and STL (Stereo Lithography) files. The property assignment scheme was designed to make sizing in Collier Research’s HyperSizer easy. Support for other mesh storage formats can be added as needed.
