Sheet plastic filters for solar cells

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF) film protects solar cells on Mars surface from radiation and prevents degradation of solar cell surfaces by Martian dust storms. PVF films may replace glass or quartz windows on solar cell arrays used to generate power on earth.

Experimental investigation of the flow, oxidation, cooling, and thermal-fatigue characteristics of a laminated porous sheet material

The basic flow and oxidation characteristics of a laminated porous material (Lamilloy) are presented. The oxidation characteristics of Lamilloy are compared to a wireform-type porous material for the case when both materials are made from Hastelloy-X alloy. The cooling performance of an air cooled vane made from Lamilloy, as determined from cascade tests made at gas temperatures ranging from 1388 to 1741 C (2350 to 3165 F) is also discussed, as well as of a cascade-type thermal fatigue test of the Lamilloy vane.

Sensitivity of the creep-rupture properties of Waspaloy sheet to sharp-edged notches in the temperature range 1000-1400 deg F.

Time-dependent notch sensitivity of Waspaloy was observed at test temperatures from 1000 to 1300 deg F. Its occurrence in this range was dependent on the heat treatment. ?Overaging' eliminated the notch sensitivity. Optimum combination of smooth and notched specimen strengths for material solution treated at 1975 deg F were obtained by aging 24 hr at 1550 deg F. Necessary conditions for time-dependent notch sensitivity were (1) the notch specimen loads had to be below the approximate 0.2 percent offset yield strength; and (2 ) test data from smooth specimens had to indicate that small amounts of creep used up large fractions of creep-rupture life. No reasons were evident why these criteria will not prove applicable to other alloys.

Development of explosively bonded TZM wire reinforced Columbian sheet composites

Methods of producing TZM molybdenum wire reinforced C129Y columbium alloy composites by explosive welding were studied. Layers of TZM molybdenum wire were wound on frames with alternate layers of C129Y columbium alloy foil between the wire layers. The frames held both the wire and foils in place for the explosive bonding process. A goal of 33 volume percent molybdenum wire was achieved for some of the composites. Variables included wire diameter, foil thickness, wire separation, standoff distance between foils and types and amounts of explosive. The program was divided into two phases: (1) development of basic welding parameters using 5 x 10-inch composites, and (2) scaleup to 10 x 20-inch composites.
