Excited-State Switching between Ligand-Centered and Charge Transfer Modulated by Metal–Carbon Bonds in Cyclopentadienyl Iridium Complexes

Three series of pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) Ir(III) complexes with different bidentate ligands were synthesized and structurally characterized, [Cp*Ir(tpy)L] n + (tpy = 2-tolylpyridinato; n = 0 or 1), [Cp*Ir(piq)L] n + (piq = 1-phenylisoquinolinato; n = 0 or 1), and [Cp*Ir(bpy)L] m + (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; m = 1 or 2), featuring a range of monodentate carbon-donor ligands within each series [L = 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide; 3,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (NHC); methyl)]. The spectroscopic and photophysical properties of these molecules and those of the photocatalyst [Cp*Ir(bpy)H] + were investigated to establish electronic structure–photophysical property relationships that engender productive photochemical reactivity of this hydride and its methyl analogue. The Ir(III) chromophores containing ancillary CNAr ligands exhibited features anticipated for predominantly ligand-centered (LC) excited states, and analogues bearing the NHC ancillary exhibited properties consistent with LC excited states containing a small admixture of metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) character. Yet, the molecules featuring anionic and strongly σ-donating methyl or hydride ligands exhibited photophysical properties consistent with a high degree of CT character. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the lowest energy triplet states in these complexes are composed of a mixture of MLCT and ligand-to-ligand CT originating from both the Cp* and methyl or hydride ancillary ligands. The high degree of CT character in the triplet excited states of methyliridium complexes bearing C^N-cyclometalated ligands offer a striking contrast to the photophysical properties of pseudo-octahedral structures fac -Ir(C^N) 3 or Ir(C^N) 2 (acac) that have lowest-energy triplet excited states characterized as primarily LC character with a more moderate MLCT admixture.

LHCSR1 Functions as a Dimmer Switch for Light Harvesting

In oxygenic photosynthesis, high light leads to a set of photoprotective processes, known as nonphotochemical quenching, that are required for fitness. In moss and algae, the pigment−protein complex, light-harvesting stress-related (LHCSR), is crucial for photoprotection. Acidification of the thylakoid lumen under high light triggers the activation of LHCSR and the conversion of the xanthophyll violaxanthin into zeaxanthin, which is found within LHCSR. These interrelated molecular components combine to turn on a safety valve that dissipates excess energy as heat. Previous studies of detergent-solubilized LHCSR1 found that pH and zeaxanthin regulate distinct quenching sites via the protein conformation. However, protein function in the native membrane environment can be significantly different. In this work, we applied single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy to LHCSR1 in membrane nanodiscs. The membrane environment enhanced total quenching, regardless of pH or zeaxanthin-binding. pH-dependent quenching was still observed whereas zeaxanthin-dependent quenching was suppressed. Conformational changes also increased in the membrane, establishing that the local environment can change the nature of the equilibrium between light harvesting and photoprotection.

Entropic Penalty Switches Li + Solvation Site Formation and Transport Mechanisms in Mixed Polarity Copolymer Electrolytes

Emerging solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) designs for efficient Li-ion (Li + ) conduction have relied on polarity and mobility contrast to improve conductivity. To further develop this concept, we employ simulations to examine Li + solvation and transport in poly(oligo ethylene methacrylate) (POEM) and its copolymers with poly(glycerol carbonate methacrylate) (PGCMA). We find that Li + is solvated by ether oxygens instead of the highly polar PGCMA, due to lower entropic penalties. The presence of PGCMA promotes single-chain solvation, thereby suppressing interchain Li + hopping. The conductivity difference between random copolymer PGCMA-r-POEM and block copolymer PGCMA-b-POEM is explained in terms of a hybrid solvation site mechanism. With diffuse microscopic interfaces between domains, PGCMA near the POEM contributes to Li + transport by forming hybrid solvation sites. The formation of such sites is hindered when PGCMA is locally concentrated. These findings help explain how thermodynamic driving forces govern Li + solvation and transport in mixed SPEs.
