Carbonate Mineral Formation on Mars: Clues from Stable Isotope Variation Seen in Cryogenic Laboratory Studies of Carbonate Salts

The geologic history of water on the planet Mars is intimately connected to the formation of carbonate minerals through atmospheric CO2 and its control of the climate history of Mars. Carbonate mineral formation under modern martian atmospheric conditions could be a critical factor in controlling the martian climate in a means similar to the rock weathering cycle on Earth. The combination of evidence for liquid water on the martian surface and cold surface conditions suggest fluid freezing could be very common on the surface of Mars. Cryogenic calcite forms readily when a rise in pH occurs as a result of carbon dioxide degassing quickly from freezing Ca-bicarbonate-rich water solutions. This is a process that has been observed in some terrestrial settings such as arctic permafrost cave deposits, lakebeds of the Dry Valleys of Antarctica, and in aufeis (river icings) from rivers of N.E. Alaska. We report here the results of a series of laboratory experiments that were conducted to simulate potential cryogenic carbonate formation on the planet Mars. These results indicate that carbonates grown under martian conditions (controlled atmospheric pressure and temperature) show enrichments from starting bicarbonate fluids in both carbon and oxygen isotopes beyond equilibrium values with average delta13C(DIC-CARB) values of ~20.5%0 which exceed the expected equilibrium fractionation factor of [10(sup 3) ln alpha = ~13%0] at 0 degC. Oxygen isotopes showed a smaller enrichment with delta18O(H2O-CARB) values of ~35.5%0, slightly exceeding the equilibrium fractionation factor of [10(sup 3) ln alpha = ~34%0 ] at 0degC. Large kinetic carbon isotope effects during carbonate precipitation could substantially affect the carbon isotope evolution of CO2 on Mars allowing for more efficient removal of 13C from the Noachian atmosphere enriched by atmospheric loss. This mechanism would be consistent with the observations of large carbon isotope variations in martian materials despite the relative paucity of carbonate minerals in the martian crust.

Cluster-dynamics-based parameterization for sulfuric acid–dimethylamine nucleation: comparison and selection through box and three-dimensional modeling

Clustering of gaseous sulfuric acid (SA) enhanced by dimethylamine (DMA) is a major mechanism for new particle formation (NPF) in polluted atmospheres. However, uncertainty remains regarding the SA–DMA nucleation parameterization that reasonably represents cluster dynamics and is applicable across various atmospheric conditions. This uncertainty hinders accurate three-dimensional (3-D) modeling of NPF and the subsequent assessment of its environmental and climatic impacts. Here we extensively compare different cluster-dynamics-based parameterizations for SA–DMA nucleation and identify the most reliable one through a combination of box model simulations, 3-D modeling, and in situ observations. Results show that the parameterization derived from Atmospheric Cluster Dynamic Code (ACDC) simulations, incorporating the latest theoretical insights (DLPNO-CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//ωB97X-D/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory) and adequate representation of cluster dynamics, exhibits dependable performance in 3-D NPF simulation for both winter and summer conditions in Beijing and shows promise for application in diverse atmospheric conditions. Another ACDC-derived parameterization, replacing the level of theory with RI-CC2/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z//M06-2X/6–311++G(3df,3pd), also performs well in NPF modeling at relatively low temperatures around 280 K but exhibits limitations at higher temperatures due to inappropriate representation of SA–DMA cluster thermodynamics. Additionally, a previously reported parameterization incorporating simplifications is applicable for simulating NPF in polluted atmospheres but tends to overestimate particle formation rates under conditions of elevated temperature (>∼300 K) and low-condensation sink (<∼3×10 -3 s −1 ). Our findings highlight the applicability of the new ACDC-derived parameterization, which couples the latest SA–DMA nucleation theory and holistic cluster dynamics, in 3-D NPF modeling. The ACDC-derived parameterization framework provides a valuable reference for developing parameterizations for other nucleation systems.

Tetramethylpyrazine inhibits neutrophil extracellular traps formation and alleviates hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury in rat liver transplantation

Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is an adverse effect for liver transplantation which is characterized by immune response mediated inflammation. Recent studies report that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are implicated in hepatic IRI. The aim of this study was to explore the mechanism of action of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), the main chemical composition of Ligusticum chuanxiong in treatment of ischemic related diseases. Data showed that hepatic IRI increases the leak of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST), and stimulates formation of NETs. Extracellular DNA/NETs assay, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, immunofluorescence assay, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) and Western blot assay, showed that TMP significantly reduces formation of NETs and alleviates hepatic IRI. Moreover, TMP and Diphenyleneiodonium (DPI) suppressed ROS production in neutrophils. In addition, analysis showed that activation of NADPH oxidase plays a role in formation of NETs triggered by hepatic IRI. Notably, TMP inhibited formation of NETs though inhibition of NADPH oxidase. Additionally, Combination treatment using TMP and DPI was more effective compared with monotherapy of either of the two drugs. These findings show that combination therapy using TMP and DPI is a promising method for treatment hepatic IRI.

Energetic Control of Redox-Active Polymers toward Safe Organic Bioelectronic Materials

Avoiding faradaic side reactions during the operation of electrochemical devices is important to enhance the device stability, to achieve low power consumption, and to prevent the formation of reactive side-products. This is particularly important for bioelectronic devices, which are designed to operate in biological systems. While redox-active materials based on conducting and semiconducting polymers represent an exciting class of materials for bioelectronic devices, they are susceptible to electrochemical side-reactions with molecular oxygen during device operation. In this work, electrochemical side reactions with molecular oxygen are shown to occur during organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) operation using high-performance, state-of-the-art OECT materials. Depending on the choice of the active material, such reactions yield hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), a reactive side-product, which may be harmful to the local biological environment and may also accelerate device degradation. A design strategy is reported for the development of redox-active organic semiconductors based on donor–acceptor copolymers that prevents the formation of H 2 O 2 during device operation. This study elucidates the previously overlooked side-reactions between redox-active conjugated polymers and molecular oxygen in electrochemical devices for bioelectronics, which is critical for the operation of electrolyte-gated devices in application-relevant environments.

Nanohybrid of Cu2O-Ti3C2Tx as a Silver-Free MXene Sorbent for Iodine Gas Capture from Nuclear Waste

The capture of volatile radioiodine from nuclear fuel reprocessing off-gas streams remains a critical challenge due to the high volatility, long half-life of 129I, and biological uptake of iodide from the environment. Although silver-based sorbents provide strong iodine chemisorption, their high cost and regulatory classification as mixed radioactive-hazardous waste motivate the development of alternative materials. Here, we report a silver-free Cu2O-Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrid for iodine gas capture at 150 °C. Structural and compositional analyses confirm the formation of Cu2O nanoparticles on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets and their subsequent conversion to thermodynamically stable CuI upon static iodine gas exposure, achieving an iodine mass loading of up to 1115 mg/g. These results demonstrate the potential of Cu2O-Ti3C2Tx MXene as a copper-based alternative to silver sorbents for elevated-temperature iodine gas capture.

X-ray sources in regions of star formation. III - Naked T Tauri stars associated with the Taurus-Auriga complex

Ground-based and IRAS optical and IR spectroscopic and photometric observations are reported for 90 stars in or near 59 Einstein Observatory X-ray error circles in the Tau-Aur region. The data are presented in extensive tables and sample spectra and characterized in detail, with particular attention to 28 newly discovered 'naked' T Tau stars, which are shown to be normal stars with no significant IR or UV excess and ages of 1-40 Myr. These stars are found to outnumber normal T Tau stars by a factor of 10 in an area near the Tau-Aur dark clouds, and it is argued that their evolution toward the ZAMS is typical for low-mass stars. The implications of this finding for the time scales of circumstellar-disk dissipation and planet formation are discussed.

Observations of ionospheric electric fields above atmospheric weather systems

We report on the observations of a number of quasi-dc electric field events associated with large-scale atmospheric weather formations. The observations were made by the electric field experiment onboard the San Marco D satellite, operational in an equatorial orbit from May to December 1988. Several theoretical studies suggest that electric fields generated by thunderstorms are present at high altitudes in the ionosphere. In spite of such favorable predictions, weather-related events are not often observed since they are relatively weak. We shall report here on a set of likely E field candidates for atmospheric-ionospheric causality, these being observed over the Indonesian Basin, northern South America, and the west coast of Africa; all known sites of atmospheric activity. As we shall demonstrate, individual events often be traced to specific active weather features. For example, a number of events were associated with spacecraft passages near Hurricane Joan in mid-October 1988. As a statistical set, the events appear to coincide with the most active regions of atmospheric weather.

Alanine synthesis from glyceraldehyde and ammonium ion in aqueous solution

The formation of alanine (ala) form C(14)-glyceraldehyde and ammonium phosphate in the presence or absence of a thiol is reported. At ambient temperature, ala synthesis was six times more rapid in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid than in its absence (0.6 and 0.1 percent, respectively, after 60 days). Similarly, the presence of another thiol, N-acetylcysteinate, increased the production of ala, as well as of lactate. The reaction pathway of thiol-catalyzed synthesis of ala, with the lactic acid formed in a bypath, is suggested. In this, dehydration of glyceraldehyde is followed by the formation of hemithioacetal. In the presence of ammonia, an imine is formed, which eventually yields ala. This pathway is consistent with the observation that the rate ratio of ala/lactate remains constant throughout the process. The fact that the reaction takes place under anaerobic conditions in the presence of H2O and with the low concentrations of simple substrates and catalysts makes it an attractive model prebiotic reaction in the process of molecular evolution.

Development of coherent-precipitate-hardened high-entropy alloys with hierarchical NiAl/Ni 2 TiAl precipitates in CrMnFeCoNiAl x Ti y alloys

Coherent precipitates hardening is currently emerging strengthening mechanism of the various high entropy alloys (HEAs). Recently, CrMnFeCoNiAl x HEAs have been studied to show a phase transition from face-centered-cubic (FCC) to body-centered-cubic (BCC) and formation of coherent precipitates (B2-NiAl) within the BCC matrix. The coherent precipitates in the CrMnFeCoNiAl x alloys could contribute to increase the strength but lead to considerable reduction of the ductility. The present work systematically investigated a series of CrMnFeCoNiAl 0.5 Ti x alloys to further improve the strength and plasticity, as compared to the previously reported CrMnFeCoNiAl x HEAs. As a result, an increase of Ti addition leads to the phase transition from FCC to BCC and formation of lamellar structure and hierarchical precipitates reinforced by B2-NiAl and L2 1 -Ni 2 TiAl phases. Excellent mechanical properties were achieved from CrMnFeCoNiAl 0.5 Ti 0.1 and CrMnFeCoNiAl 0.5 Ti 0.2 alloys. Herein, the mechanical properties of the CrMnFeCoNiAl 0.5 Ti x alloys were discussed via theoretical strengthening mechanisms.

3D Hybrid Nanofiber Aerogels Combining with Nanoparticles Made of a Biocleavable and Targeting Polycation and MiR‐26a for Bone Repair

Abstract The healing of large bone defects represents a clinical challenge, often requiring some form of grafting. 3D nanofiber aerogels could be a promising bone graft due to their biomimetic morphology and controlled porous structures and composition. miR‐26a has been reported to induce the differentiation of bone marrow‐derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and facilitate bone formation. Introducing miR‐26a with a suitable polymeric vector targeting BMSCs could improve and enhance the functions of 3D nanofiber aerogels for bone regeneration. Herein, the comb‐shaped polycation (HA–SS–PGEA) is first developed, carrying a targeting component, biocleavable groups, and short ethanolamine (EA)‐decorated poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) (abbreviated as PGEA) arms as miR‐26a delivery vector. Thereafter, the cytotoxicity and transfection efficiency of this polycation and cellular response to miR‐26a‐incorporated nanoparticles (NPs) are assessed in vitro. HA–SS–PGEA exhibits a stronger ability to transport miR‐26a and exert its functions than the gold standard polyethyleneimine (PEI) and low‐molecular‐weight linear PGEA. The efficacy of HA–SS–PGEA/miR‐26a NPs loaded 3D hybrid nanofiber aerogels showing a positive effect on the cranial bone defect healing is finally examined. Together, the combination of 3D nanofiber aerogels and functional NPs consisting of a biodegradable and targeting polycation and therapeutic miRNA could be a promising approach for bone regeneration.

Facile Access to Organostibines via Selective Organic Superbase Catalyzed Antimony‐Carbon Protonolysis

Abstract The selective formation of antimony‐carbon bonds via organic superbase catalysis under metal‐ and salt‐free conditions is reported. This novel approach utilizes electron‐deficient stibine, Sb(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , to give upon base‐catalyzed reactions with weakly acidic aromatic and heteroaromatic hydrocarbons access to a range of new aromatic and heteroaromatic stibines, respectively, with loss of C 6 HF 5 . Also, the significantly less electron‐deficient stibines, Ph 2 SbC 6 F 5 and PhSb(C 6 F 5 ) 2 smoothly underwent base‐catalyzed exchange reactions with a range of terminal alkynes to generate the stibines of formulae PhSb(C≡CPh) 2 , and Ph 2 SbC≡CR [R=C 6 H 5 , C 6 H 4 ‐NO 2 , COOEt, CH 2 Cl, CH 2 NEt 2 , CH 2 OSiMe 3 , Sb(C 6 H 5 ) 2 ], respectively. These formal substitution reactions proceed with high selectivity as only the C 6 F 5 groups serve as a leaving group to be liberated as C 6 HF 5 upon formal proton transfer from the alkyne. Kinetic studies of the base‐catalyzed reaction of Ph 2 SbC 6 F 5 with phenyl acetylene to form Ph 2 SbC≡CPh and C 6 HF 5 suggested the empirical rate law to exhibit a first‐order dependence with respect to the base catalyst, alkyne and stibine. DFT calculations support a pathway proceeding via a concerted σ‐bond metathesis transition state, where the base catalyst activates the Sb‐C 6 F 5 bond sequence through secondary bond interactions.

Molten Flux Synthesis of Plutonium (IV) Silicates K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 and Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15

Few plutonium containing silicates have been reported in the literature and only one other tetravalent plutonium silicate structure has been reported using the flux growth method. With the goal of understanding actinide incorporation into silicates, we describe herein two new plutonium (IV) silicates, Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15 and K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 , synthesized using a mixed alkali chloride/alkali fluoride flux growth. Both structures crystallize in the C2/c space group with lattice parameters a=24.2980(10) Å, b=7.1466(3) Å, c=17.2025(8) Å and $\blacksquare$96.6560(10)° for Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15 , and a=9.9478(2) Å, b=5.59820 (10) Å, c=13.1848(2) Å, and $\blacksquare$105.7400(10)° for K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 . Comparisons to the synthesis of other reported alkali actinide silicates (Ce, U, and Th) are made. Raman spectra and DFT calculations of formation enthalpies and vibrational modes provide confirmation of structure refinements and enhanced product characterization for comparison with other materials.

Fast and Scalable Synthesis of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 Cathode by Sol–Gel-Assisted Microwave Sintering

High-voltage spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) is a promising cathode material for high-energy-density and high-power-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The high cost of the currently available LIBs needs to be addressed urgently for wide application in the transport sector (electric vehicles, buses) and large-scale energy storage systems (ESS). Of significance, herein, novel fast and scalable microwave-assisted synthesis of LNMO is reported, which leads to a production cost cut. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the formation of the desired phase with high crystallinity. Field emission scanning (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses indicate that the synthesized phase is of nanometric size (50–150 nm) due to an extremely short sintering time (20 min). The material synthesized at 750 °C shows a higher initial discharge capacity (130 mA h g -1 ) than that synthesized at 650 °C (115 mA h g -1 ). The materials heat treated at higher temperatures show better electrochemical performance in terms of initial capacity, rate capability, and improved cycling. The improved electrochemical performance of LNMO at 750 °C is attributed to the formation of a stable crystal structure, low charge transfer resistance at the electrode/electrolyte interface, high electrical conductivity due to the presence of a disorder structure, and improved ionic diffusivity.

Inhomogeneous Distribution and Coarsening of y″ Precipitates in a Ni-Based Superalloy and Their Effect on Creep

It has been reported that the addition of Nb or Ta in the high Ti/Al ratio alloys promotes the formation of y″ precipitates solely and greatly contributes to the elevated temperature strength and resistance to creep deformation. In this study, the y''-dominant INCONEL alloy 725 (IN725) variants (named M725-Nb/Ta) modified with a high level of Nb/Ta additions and high Ti/Al ratio was chosen as a model alloy for microstructural observation of y'' variants upon creep. Following the high temperature aging (HTA), y'' was found to be the main strengthening precipitate with no detectable y’ in both M725 alloys. After creep, the grip/gage sections of the crept M725-Nb/Ta exhibited preferential coarsening and inhomogeneous distribution of y''. That is, one or two of the variants were preferentially coarsened at the expense of another variant, and sandwich-like structures, comprising of cubic y′ precipitates with small y″ discs on each face, were formed. This variant selection behavior taking place in the grip section with no stress applied was different from the typical stress-induced variant selection in previous literature. However, the sample with prior high temperature exposure (700 °C for 500 hours) with varying y″ characteristics demonstrated a similar trend of creep when compared with those in the HTA sample, suggesting that the coarsening and the inhomogeneous distribution of y'' was not the determinant of creep life in bulk M725-Nb/Ta alloys.

Facet-specific oxidation of Mn(II) and heterogeneous growth of manganese (oxyhydr)oxides on hematite nanoparticles

It is recognized that different facets of minerals vary distinctively in their chemical reactivity with aqueous solutions. However, detailed molecular and atomistic understandings of these phenomena are relatively limited. This study investigated the interaction of aqueous Mn2+ and dissolved oxygen on various facets of two morphology-types of iron oxide (hematite) nanocrystals. These interactions result in the oxidation of manganese and the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of Mn(II)/Mn(III), and Mn(III) oxides. The nanoscale morphology and atomic structure of the manganese oxide products were characterized in detail. Our results, for the first time, directly demonstrate the facet-dependent oxidation of Mn 2+ and nucleation of Mn(II/III) oxides, followed by their epitaxial growth on hematite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron diffraction measurements reveal the growth of MnOx nanowires on {012} facets of both hematite nanoplates (HNP) and hematite nanocubes (HNC), while the basal {001} facets on the HNP particles do not produce precipitates. The average oxidation state of the MnO x on HNP and HNC determined using electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) show that both Mn(II) and Mn(III) are present. The facet-dependent oxidation of Mn 2+ may be attributed to adsorption-induced electron transfer (ET), and hematite {001} facets generally exhibiting weaker ability in the uptake of ions relative to {012} facets, and the bulk ET from {012} to {001} facets through the conduction band of hematite. Nevertheless, the mineral composition and growth mechanisms of MnOx catalyzed by HNP and HNC are similar. High-resolution TEM analysis reveals the presence of both hausmannite and manganite on HNP and HNC. The nanoscale observations and thermodynamic considerations indicate that the growth mechanisms/processes of MnO x include heterogeneous nucleation of hausmannite nanoparticles, crystallization by particle attachment, transformation from hausmannite to manganite, and self-catalyzed MnO x growth. It is possible that all of these processes are concurrent. The crystallographic relationship between the heterogeneously formed manganite with hematite, which has not been reported before, proves that hematite provides reaction sites and functions as an atomic template for the formation of MnO x nanowires. These findings advance our understanding of the redox chemistry and heterogeneous growth of minerals as controlled by the surficial structure of the substrate mineral. This has important geochemical implications as the catalytic growth of less common, highly reactive phases like MnO x are known to be consequential in complex natural and anthropogenic environments.

Molecular dynamics simulation of the effect of cooling rate on the structure and properties of lithium disilicate glass

The effects of cooling rate on the structure and properties of lithium disilicate (LS2) glass are investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) computer simulations. The evolution of structural features such as pair distribution function, bond angle distribution, and Li coordination distribution are determined, and correlated with dynamic and static properties to elucidate the effects of cooling rate. The density, elastic moduli, and diffusion coefficient are found to be highly sensitive to cooling rate, whereas the Si pair distribution function and bond angle distribution are weakly affected by the cooling rate. Additionally, the changes of Si-O-Si bond angle and Li coordination number suggest the formation of Li cluster at lower cooling rates. Furthermore, by comparing results from other simulations and reported experiments, we confirm that the increase of cooling rate leads to an increase of conductivity and a decrease of density. Finally, at very high cooling rates, we find that all the atoms in LS2-glass do not relax simultaneously, but do so in two distinct configurations.

6 Li-loaded liquid scintillators produced by direct dissolution of compounds in diisopropylnaphthalene (DIPN)

Here, this paper describes preparation of 6 Li-loaded liquid scintillators by methods involving direct dissolution of 6Li salts in the commercial diisopropylnaphthalene (DIPN) solvent, without the formation of water-in-oil emulsions. Methods include incorporation of 6 Li that, unlike previously reported formulations, does not require additions of water or a strong acid such as hydrochloric acid (HCl). Results of the conducted experiments show that dissolution of aromatic and aliphatic 6 Li salts in DIPN can be easily achieved at 0.1%–0.3% by weight of atomic 6 Li, using small additions of waterless surfactants, or mild carboxylic acids. An alternative way suggests incorporation of 6 Li as a part of a surfactant molecule that can be dissolved in DIPN without any solubilizing additions. Proposed methods enable preparation of efficient 6 Li-loaded liquid scintillators that, at a large scale of 50 cm, exhibit good pulse shape discrimination (PSD) properties combined with up to 107% of light output and up to 115% of the attenuation length measured relative to standard undoped EJ-309 liquid scintillator.
