Multiple boundary condition test (MBCT) - Identification with mode shapes

The multiple boundary condition test (MBCT) approach is a ground test method to test a class of large flexible structures which cannot be ground tested by state-of-the-art test methods due to the adverse terrestrial environment. The ultimate objective of a ground test is considered to be the validation and update of a mathematical model of the structure. The research to date has indicated the MBCT does work on numerical simulations and on experimental laboratory hardware. To date only the eigenvalue has been used in the model correlation/update by inclusion of the information in the nonlinear terms resulting from the difference between the analytical and measured eigenvectors. This paper presents the results of utilizing additional information, namely the difference in the analytical and the test eigenvectors, in the validation and update of the mathematical model.

Application of multiple grids topology to supersonic internal/external flow interactions

For many aerodynamic applications, it is very difficult to construct a smooth body-fitted grid around complex configurations. An approach, called 'multiple grids' or 'zonal grids', which subdivides the entire physical domain into several subdomains, is used to overcome such difficulties. The approach is applied to obtain the solutions to the Euler equations for the supersonic internal/external flow around a fighter-aircraft configuration. Steady-state solutions are presented for Mach 2 at 0, 3.79, 7, and 10 deg angles-of-attack. The problem of conservative treatment at the zonal interfaces is also addressed.

A model for multiple throat structures in the polar cap flow entry region

A two-dimensional ionospheric convection model has been developed to produce convection patterns for southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and a positive or negative IMF y component. The model consists of a movable, shear convection reversal boundary with a gap in it where flux enters the polar cap. The sign of IMF B(y) determines the dayside gap geometry. This simple model is used to simulate measured ionospheric flows from the DE 2 satellite. Roughly 35 percent of DE 2 passes that cross the dayside between 0800 and 1400 hours MLT cannot be modeled with a single narrow flow entry region. By comparing model calculations and the measured ion flows, it is shown that the dayside flow entry region to the polar cap typically spans several hours in local time. The electric field can concentrate along portions of the polar cap entrance and weaken between the concentrated regions, thus forming multiple 'throats'.

Attitude control of an object commonly held by multiple robot arms - A Lyapunov approach

Multiple robot arms moving a commonly held object can be viewed as complex actuators whose purpose is to provide net forces and moments to the object. These forces and moments can be used to control the orientation, or attitude, of the object via the Euler equation describing attitude evolution in response to applied moments at the mass center. In contrast to the common approach that feedback-linearizes the attitude dynamics to a double integrator form with respect to some three-parameter local representation of orientation, the authors control the object using a globally nonsingular representation. Using an energy-motivated Liapunov function, globally stable control of attitude is shown.

Photovoltaic-Driven Multiple-Quantum-Well Modulator

Proposed high-performance spatial light modulator consists of multiple-quantum-well, strain-layer superlattice similar to one described in accompanying article, "Strain-Layer-Superlattice Light Modulator" (NPO-16915). Device differs from other one, operates in transmission rather than in resonant reflection and therefore includes only one stack of GaAs/InAs layers having total thickness less than penetration depth (1 to 2 micrometer) of optical modulating signal. Alternating, semitransparent semiconductor layers contain space-charge barriers forming quantum wells. Modulating light (with photon energy greater than semiconductor band gap) induces photovoltaic action, which affects transmission of modulated light (having photon energy less than band gap).

Multiple nucleon knockout by Coulomb dissociation in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The Coulomb dissociation contributions to fragmentation cross sections in relativistic heavy ion collisions, where more than one nucleon is removed, are estimated using the Weizsacker-Williams method of virtual quanta. Photonuclear cross sections taken from experimental results were used to fold into target photon number spectra calculated with the Weizsacker-Williams method. Calculations for several projectile target combinations over a wide range of charge numbers, and a wide range of incident projectile energies, are reported. These results suggest that multiple nucleon knockout by the Coulomb field may be of negligible importance in galactic heavy ion studies for projectiles lighter than Fe-56.

Study of optoelectronic switch for satellite-switched time-division multiple access

The use of optoelectronic switching for satellite switched time division multiple access will improve the isolation and reduce the crosstalk of an IF switch matrix. The results are presented of a study on optoelectronic switching. Tasks include literature search, system requirements study, candidate switching architecture analysis, and switch model optimization. The results show that the power divided and crossbar switching architectures are good candidates for an IF switch matrix.

Multiple point least squares equalization in a room

Equalization filters designed to minimize the mean square error between a delayed version of the original electrical signal and the equalized response at a point in a room have previously been investigated. In general, such a strategy degrades the response at positions in a room away from the equalization point. A method is presented for designing an equalization filter by adjusting the filter coefficients to minimize the sum of the squares of the errors between the equalized responses at multiple points in the room and delayed versions of the original, electrical signal. Such an equalization filter can give a more uniform frequency response over a greater volume of the enclosure than can the single point equalizer above. Computer simulation results are presented of equalizing the frequency responses from a loudspeaker to various typical ear positions, in a room with dimensions and acoustic damping typical of a car interior, using the two approaches outlined above. Adaptive filter algorithms, which can automatically adjust the coefficients of a digital equalization filter to achieve this minimization, will also be discussed.

Shock spectra applications to a class of multiple degree-of-freedom structures system

The demand on safety performance of launching structure and equipment system from impulsive excitations necessitates a study which predicts the maximum response of the system as well as the maximum stresses in the system. A method to extract higher modes and frequencies for a class of multiple degree-of-freedom (MDOF) Structure system is proposed. And, along with the shock spectra derived from a linear oscillator model, a procedure to obtain upper bound solutions for maximum displacement and maximum stresses in the MDOF system is presented.

Common source-multiple load vs. separate source-individual load photovoltaic system

A comparison of system performance is made for two possible system setups: (1) individual loads powered by separate solar cell sources; and (2) multiple loads powered by a common solar cell source. A proof for resistive loads is given that shows the advantage of a common source over a separate source photovoltaic system for a large range of loads. For identical loads, both systems perform the same.
